Pensionnat Sainte-Marie, Doué-la-Fontaine. Devoirs journaliers. Première classe - Première division. Eulalie Bernier.

Autograph Manuscript Signed, "Heroes Who Fight Fire."

39 pages. 8 1/2 x 11 in. Approximately 9000 words, complete with Riis's revisions, written on rectos only. Signed "Jacob A. Riis" on first and last pages. Some minor tears and chips, heavily worn final page has been affixed to another sheet for added stability, otherwise very good condition. [with:] the first printing of the essay in Century Magazine, February, 1898, published with 8 illustrations by Jay Hambidge. Original wrappers. An outstanding Jacob Riis manuscript on New York's firefighters. Riis wrote "Heroes Who Fight Fire" for Century Magazine, and it later appeared as a chapter in his book, Children of the Tenements (1903). Riis's vivid portrayal of the heroism of New York City's firemen echoes the praise one hears today from the city's officials and citizens: "Take it all in all, there is not, I think, to be found anywhere a body of men as fearless, as brave, and as efficient as the Fire Brigade of New York." His essay is filled with stories of amazing and tragic events in and around the Lower East Side tenements. Jacob Riis became famous in 1890 upon publication of his first book, How the Other Half Lives. After living in squalid circumstances himself during his first years in America, Riis, who emigrated at the age of 21, eventually secured a position as a police reporter at the New York Tribune and then later at the New York Sun. While there, he spent his nights documenting the life of those living in the Lower East Side tenements, epitomizing the style of reporting for which Theodore Roosevelt, Riis's close friend, later coined the term "muckraking." Riis first drew the interest of Theodore Roosevelt, then head of the New York Police Board of Commissioners, with the release of How the Other Half Lives. Roosevelt accompanied Riis on a number of late-night expeditions into the tenements, prompting Roosevelt to take reform measures. When Roosevelt took office, he offered Riis a high-ranking political position. Riis declined, explaining, "to represent is not my business. To write is; I can do it much better and back up the other; so we are two for one." Riis's promotion of progressive social reform led Roosevelt to call him "New York's most useful citizen." "Jacob Riis was one of those men who by his writings contributed most to raising the standard of unselfishness, of disinterestedness, of sane and kindly good citizenship, in this country . If I were asked to name a fellow-man who came nearest to being the ideal American citizen, I should name Jacob Riis" (Theodore Roosevelt, The Outlook, 1914).

- "This first edition in German is the first translation of this classic work on the digestive glands, published in Russia the year before" (Heirs of Hippocrates). - Papier schwach gebräunt; Anstreichungen eines zeitgenöss.         Rossa's Recollections. 1838 to 1898. Childhood, Boyhood, Manhood

1898 - First edition. 8vo., original brown cloth, lettered in gilt, cloth slipcase. New York, O'Donovan Rossa. A presentation copy from two of the most famous names in the Fenian movement, inscribed on the front free endpaper in the hand of O'Donovan Rossa 'To the Revd. Michael Higgins, Administrator, St. Colman's Cathedral Queenstown - From C.G.Doran. O'Donovan Rossa'. Born Jeremiah O'Donovan, Rossa added the cognomen in honour of his ancestors from Rossmore. In1858 he wassworn into the Irish Republican Brotherhood and became manager of the Irish Nationalist newspaper 'The Irish People', which earned him arrest and imprisonment in a succession of English gaols, where he protested vigorously at the conditions. As a result of an inquiry into those conditions, theFenian prisoners were granted early release from jail in 1871, but were forced to emigrate and O'Donovan Rossa moved to New York. While in New York, O'Donovan Rossa raised money to fund what hecalled a ?Skirmishing Fund? - essentially a late nineteenth century terror and bombing campaign. He was finally released from banishment by the British Government in 1891 and travelled to Ireland in 1894 and again in 1904. Although he lived for while in Corkaround this time, he returned to live in New York and died there in1915. His body came back to Ireland, where his funeral became a propaganda opportunity for the Nationalist movement, inspiring a famous speech at his graveside by Padraig Pearse 'They think that they have pacified Ireland. They think that they have purchased half of us and intimidated the other half. They think that they have foreseen everything, think that they have provided against everything; but, the fools, the fools, the fools! ? They have left us our Fenian dead, and while Ireland holds these graves, Ireland unfree shall never be at peace'. Printed copies of the speech were on the streets within days of the delivery. Doran, a civil engineer by profession, was Clerk of the Works at the construction of St. Colman's Cathedral. He was a lifelong Fenian, and was like Rossa a prominent member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood. Pencilled annotation 'Mr. C.', to the title page. Margins of pp 69-72, 295-300 torn with some loss, not affecting the text. Some damp-staining to the spine and both covers, head and tail of spine and the corners bumped.         Through Persia on a Side-Saddle

      J. B. Lippincott Company, Philadelphia 1898 - 362, [1] p. 23 cm. Frontispiece and 32 b&w plates. Green cloth hardcover with gold impressing. Light wear to cloth. Small label on front pastedown and ink date on rear of front free. Map missing. Ella Constance Sykes (1863-1939) paid two visits to Persia, spending nearly three years there in all. The first took place in October 1894, when her brother Percy invited her to accompany him on his trip to the districts of Kerman and Baluchistan, where he was being sent to establish British consulates. She spent two years in the interior of Persia and was one of the first European women to visit the area. Ella also traveled with her brother on his subsequent missions along the Persian Gulf, visiting the major coastal settlements on the way, and spent the winter of 1896-97 with him in Tehran before returning to England at the end of February 1897. She paid her second visit to Iran some 10 years later when she stayed with her brother in Mashad.Ella's interest in and affection for Persia and its people is evident upon reading this, the first of her three books about the country. She vividly describes her first visit, her long horseback travels, and life in Kerman where she was probably the first European woman ever seen. Her descriptions of Tehran, Fatima's shrine at Koom, Persian ladies and their customs, Persian marriage customs and childrearing, make for entertaining reading to this day. Note rear advertisement for Sykes Patent Tent and Sleeping Valise, an invention of Ella's brother Percy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Autograph Manuscript Signed, “Heroes Who Fight Fire.”

NEW YORK 1898 - 39 pages. 8 1⁄2 x 11 in. Approximately 9000 words, complete with Riis’s revisions, written on rectos only. Signed “Jacob A. Riis” on first and last pages. Some minor tears and chips, heavily worn final page has been affixed to another sheet for added stability, otherwise very good condition. [with:] the first printing of the essay in Century Magazine, February, 1898, published with 8 illustrations by Jay Hambidge. Original wrappers. An outstanding Jacob Riis manuscript on New York’s firefighters. Riis wrote “Heroes Who Fight Fire” for Century Magazine, and it later appeared as a chapter in his book, Children of the Tenements (1903). Riis’s vivid portrayal of the heroism of New York City’s firemen echoes the praise one hears today from the city’s officials and citizens: “Take it all in all, there is not, I think, to be found anywhere a body of men as fearless, as brave, and as efficient as the Fire Brigade of New York.” His essay is filled with stories of amazing and tragic events in and around the Lower East Side tenements. While there, he spent his nights documenting the life of those living in the Lower East Side tenements, epitomizing the style of reporting for which Theodore Roosevelt, Riis’s close friend, later coined the term “muckraking.” Riis first drew the interest of Theodore Roosevelt, then head of the New York Police Board of Commissioners, with the release of How the Other Half Lives. Roosevelt accompanied Riis on a number of late-night expeditions into the tenements, prompting Roosevelt to take reform measures. When Roosevelt took office, he offered Riis a high-ranking political position. Riis declined, explaining, “to represent is not my business. To write is; I can do it much better and back up the other; so we are two for one.” Riis’s promotion of progressive social reform led Roosevelt to call him “New York’s most useful citizen.” “Jacob Riis was one of those men who by his writings contributed most to raising the standard of unselfishness, of disinterestedness, of sane and kindly good citizenship, in this country . If I were asked to name a fellow-man who came nearest to being the ideal American citizen, I should name Jacob Riis” (Theodore Roosevelt, The Outlook, 1914). [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Versuch einer Darstellung der Empfindungen.

1898 - Vienna, Alfred HÃ lder, 1898. 4to. Contemporary half morocco over boards, spine lettered in gilt, original front wrapper bound in; pp. 28, five folding tables; light marking to boards, a little tightly bound, otherwise very good. This is the very rare pothumously published Essay on the Explanation of the Senses, an attempt to get to grips in a scientific and quantitative way with the senses of touch, taste, vision and hearing, their components such as colours, bitter or sweet, high or low pitch, all visualised in three-dimenional space and dealt with in an arithmetical way. The author, who died before the publication of this work, discusses as well the relation between linguistic expression and the actual physicality of a sensation. Synesthetic correlations, oppostions of qualities, analogies between different senses, and the interaction of simultaneous stimuli of different senses are all dealt with in depth and with references to Helmholtz, Ernst Mach, Chevreul, and Herbert Spencer. No copy could be traced in either Britain or North America. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        A COON ALPHABET

      R. H. Russell; John Lane, New York; London 1898 - Kemble, E. W. A COON ALPHABET. New York: R. H. Russell; London: John Lane, 1898, (1898). FIRST EDITION. 8vo - 7-1/8" x 8-15/16". Tan cloth backed yellow pictorial paper covered boards; black decoration and black and red lettering printed on both the upper and lower covers. The wonderful condition of this copy cannot be overstated; the only signs of wear anywhere on this book are the slightest hints of shelfwear and that is it. Publisher's original cream color pictorial dust wrapper with green decoration and lettering to the front panel; missing the bottom 1" of the front panel and spine and there are two small chips to the back panel for what is a lovely and rather amazing survival of a 19th century dust wrapper. Plain endpapers with the bookplate of American actress and vocalist Lillian "Lulu" Glaser on front endpaper. There is an inscription and a wonderful, full page, highly detailed pen and ink drawing by E. W. Kemble, signed and dated Dec. 14 -98 on FFE. [60] leaves, not [56] leaves as called for due to the leaves for the letters N and O being included twice. Printed on heavy weight coated paper which remains as bright and as white as the day the book was printed; the twenty-six letters of the alphabet are paired with twenty-six, four line rhymes that represent African American characters in negative stereotypical fashion; every leaf with a large black and white drawing by Kemble which again represents the African American characters in a negative stereotypical fashion. The condition of the book is FINE. The condition of the dust wrapper is VERY GOOD. Truly the ULTIMATE COPY that one could have of this title! [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

The Story of the Malakand Field Force: An Episode of Frontier War

London: Longmans, Green and Co., 1898. First edition, only printing. Hardcover. This is the first edition, only printing of Churchill's first book, based on his exploits with Sir Bindon Blood's expedition on the Northwest Frontier of India in 1897. Condition of this unrestored, original, and complete copy approaches very good. Though it is technically ex-library, there are no external indicators. The publisher's green cloth binding remains remains tight and square with bright gilt and nicely rounded spine. Slight softness to the corners, moderate overall soiling, and a .25 inch (6 mm) split at the spine head do not substantially detract from exterior presentation. The only indications of ex-library status are a bookplate and an ink stamp. The plate is that of “Cardiff Public Libraries” affixed to the front pastedown indicating that this book was “Bequeathed to the Central Library” in “May, 1935” by a “William Price James, M.A.” We find no other previous ownership marks. A .75 inch (19 mm) diameter round ink-stamp of “Cardiff Public Libraries” is found at the foot of the blank title page verso, with diminutive library notation beneath. The contents remain quite respectably clean for the edition. All maps are intact, including the folding maps at pages 1 and 146, as is the frontispiece and tissue guard. The original black endpapers are present, with just a .75 inch (19mm) unobtrusive cosmetic split to the paper at the front pastedown gutter that does not affect binding integrity and a tiny chip to the upper left corner of the front free endpaper. Spotting is mild for the edition, incidental within and modest to the page edges, which show light dust soiling to the top edges and a little shelf soiling to the bottom edges. Second state of the first and only printing is confirmed by an errata slip tipped in at p. 1 and a rear catalogue dated “3/98”. When this book was written and published, Churchill was a young cavalry officer still serving in India. While he had successfully applied his pen as a war correspondent - indeed the book is based on his dispatches to the Daily Telegraph and the Pioneer Mail - this was his first book-length work. The young Churchill was motivated by a combination of pique and ambition. He was vexed that his Daily Telegraph columns were to be published unsigned. On 25 October 1897 Churchill wrote to his mother: "...I had written them with the design... of bringing my personality before the electorate." Two weeks later, his resolve to write a book firming, Churchill again wrote to his mother: "...It is a great undertaking but if carried out will yield substantial results in every way, financially, politically, and even, though do I care a damn, militarily." Having invested his ambition in this first book, he clearly labored over it: "I have discovered a great power of application which I did not think I possessed. For two months I have worked not less than five hours a day." The finished manuscript was sent to his mother on the last day of 1897 and published on 14 March of 1898. Publication was arranged by Churchill's uncle while the author was still in India, resulting in numerous spelling and detail errors. Churchill was incensed by the errors and acted with haste to address them. Hence later states of the first edition bear errata slips. Home Issue copies also bear a 32-page Longmans, Green catalogue bound in at the back, which is dated either "12/97" or "3/98" at the foot of page 32. With only a little more than 1,900 copies bound, this first edition of Churchill's first book is both desirable and elusive. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A1.1.b, Woods/ICS A1(aa), Langworth p.12.
