HURTON, William.
London, William Andrews, [1897]. 8vo. Original dark blue cloth, lettered and illustrated in silver and black; pp. [iv], 257, [14, advertisements], frontispiece; apart from very light spotting at the beginning, a near-fine copy. First published in 1855, this is a surprisingly rare title, a maritime adventure story, written by an early admirer of Melville. Set in 1822/3 and on the barque Lady Emily on her way from Hull to Tromso In Norway, this is a matter-of fact narrative combined with the romantic shipwreck in the Arctic Ocean, with only the first-person narrator and Danish woman Oriana surviving. She was a descendant of Vikings, and therefore radically different from her Victorian sisters. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

1897. For sale here is an 1897 original Publisher's hardback in fine condition. 1897 was the second year that Wisden published in hardback and in our experience the 1897 is just as scarce as the 1896 hardback. It is difficult to know why these two years are so scarce compared to later hardback years. It might be that Wisden produced them in very small numbers or possibly because quite a lot of them were taken out of the hardback covers and rebound in bindings to match the years prior to 1896. A lot of Wisden from this era were rebound by collectors at the time of publication. In any event the book is incredibly scarce! The front and rear boards and the spine are absolutely immaculate. The book as had no restoration whatsoever. The gilt is bright to the front board and to the spine. Internally, all is in immaculate condition - the front and rear paste downs, the contents and the plate are all complete, original, unmarked and in fine condition. An immaculate copy of a very scarce book.

Brooke’s Monkey Brand.
– Die beworbene Seife hatte einen hohen Bekanntheitsgrad: "Monkey Brand soap was introduced in the 1880s as a household scouring and polishing soap, in cake/bar form. A firm owned by Sidney and Henry Gross, had produced and sold the soap in Philadelphia, USA. The soap’s highly abrasive agent was pumice. Lever Brothers bought the company in 1899 and transferred the production of Monkey Brand soap to Port Sunlight. The name ‘Benjamin Brooke’ (hence Brooke’s Monkey Brand) was used to promote the Monkey Brand soap both in the States and in Britain. In George Bernard Shaw’s "Pygmalion" and the musical based on it ("My Fair Lady"), Henry Higgins tells his housekeeper to take Eliza Doolittle upstairs and clean her up, and to use ".Monkey Brand, if it won’t come off any other way." In the movie version, the line is changed to ".sandpaper, if it won’t come off any other way." (wikipedia).
