FREETHOUGHT] BRANN, William Cowper
The Iconoclast, Waco, TX 1897 - Octavo. Original pictorial wrappers; 72pp. Covers toned and worn, with partial splits at spine and a horizontal tear to rear wrapper; internally clean and unmarked; Very Good. Annual collection of Brann's pieces from his newspaper "The Iconoclast." The notorious Brann was one of America's first succesful "attack journalists," launching vicious broadsides against everything from harlotry to Baptism to New York society, and often conflating the three. He once famously stated: "I have nothing against Baptists -- I just don't think they were held under long enough." The present volume is the last annual to be published before Brann's assassination in 1898, at the hands (perhaps unsurprisingly) of an irate Baptist. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Surgeon-Colonel W F Stevenson
London - Longmans, Green and Co, 1897. A comprehensive guide to military surgery and wounds. The first edition of this work, a first U. S edition was published a year later. This work is written on gunshot wounds and other wounds gained during warfare. The work is written specifically on the principle of antisepsis. A pioneering work. The only work prior to this regarding gunshot wounds was Sir Thomas Longmore's Gunshot Injuries. With the inscription of Sir Wm. MacCormac to the verso of half-title. William MacCormac was a notable nineteenth and twentieth century surgeon. MacCormac was a strong advocate in the use of Joseph Lister's antiseptic surgical methods. He was also a pioneer in the Royal Army Medical Corps and is regarded as the most decorated surgeon in Britain due to his serving as Serjeant Surgeon to Edward VII. A fascinating work giving insightto the quick-paced environment of military surgery. Condition: In publisher's cloth binding with gilt stamping to the spine. Externally, smart with bumping to the head and tail of spine. Light rubbing to the head and tail of spine as well as to the extremities. Front hinge is strained resulting in front endpapers loosening slightly. Prior owner's inscription to the verso of front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright withasmall amount of age toning toedges. Just the odd spot to pages. Overall:VERY GOOD. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

London: Macmillan & Co., Limited, 1897 - Crown octavo. Near-contemporary presentation binding by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, blue full morocco, spine lettered and richly decorated in gilt, decorative gilt frames to covers, gilt presentation vignette to front cover, gauffered edges gilt, buff endpapers. Boards bowed, loss to head of spine, faint marks to head of covers, spine toned; a very good copy. Frontispiece with tissue-guard and 22 illustrations by I. W. Taber. First UK book edition. Binder's presentation copy, with a calligraphic inscription in manuscript in red and black ink, "To Irene, with best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. From the bindery, December 1920", signed by George Sutcliffe beneath the inscription, to the fourth binder's blank (Sangorski having died in 1912). It is probable that this was a Christmas gift given to employees of the company; Irene worked for Sangorski and Sutcliffe for 16 years, and was the wife of Stanley Bray (1907–1995), George Sutcliffe's nephew and manager of the business from 1936. In 1989 Irene and Stanley produced a copy of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam based on the original plans for the infamous bejewelled Great Omar, first made by Sangorski and Sutcliffe in 1912, and sent on the RMS Titanic, sinking with the ship. The UK edition of Captains Courageous was preceded by the US edition, released the previous month. The work was originally serialized in Pearson's Magazine between 1896 and 1897. His poems were subsequently translated into many European languages, including German, Hungarian, Polish, Rumanian and Russian. Anonymous, William Stirling, R. B. Cunninghame Graham (Preface), J. F. C. Fuller (Review)
London: Elkin Mathews, 1897. Original Binding - Paper covered boards show some extremity wear, age. Cloth spine, both joints without any splitting or fraying, paper title label complete without any title loss (see images). Fore, bottom edges uncut as issued. Being that the text block is a bit heavy, the binding is usually found compromised. This copy shows this with old repairs to hinges, and a cloth binders tape repair to the title gutter, extending into, and strengthening the backing. Still square, sewn binding very tight and very readable due to this quite well done signature/backing repair. Internally clean, bright, and Unmarked. Laid in review by J. F. C. Fuller on contemporary paper, cyclostyle type print. Some wear, with strengthening to binding as above, still a Very Good copy, scarce in condition thus/Original Binding.. First Edition. Hard Cover/Cloth Spine/Sewn. Very Good/No Jacket, As Issued. Illus. by 29 Figures, Various Numerations, etc. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

[No place: no publisher, 1897. Unbound. Very Good. Albumen image on larger card. Measuring 4" x 5.5". Some foxing, very good. Captioned in a contemporary hand on the verso. Central image of the electric chair with a man in the chair and three others standing by. That image is surrounded by 10 oval portraits with a list of the names of the electrocuted underneath the picture of the chair; four of the first ten seem to have been African-Americans. In 1897 Ohio switched from hanging to the electric chair as seemingly more humane.

First edition. Very Good+ with rubbing to gilt on front cover, evidence of removed bookplate on paste down with former owner's stamps on front free endpaper and both paste downs; she was Lenore Cosseboom, a founding member of the Church of Satan (alongside Anton LaVey) and priestess, who was apparently often used as a human altar in early COS services. A scarce occult/ literary hoax by Edward Irenaeus Prime-Stevenson, who is most-often remembered for his 1906 pioneering gay-themed novel Imre, published under the pseudonym Xavier Mayne. " Morris Rosenfeld (1862 - 1923) was a Yiddish poet whose work sheds light on the living circumstances of emigrants from Eastern Europe in New York's tailoring workshops. "In 1888 Rosenfeld published his first collection of socialist poems...An excellent orator, Rosenfeld often recited his poems to enthusiastic audiences at socialist and union events, and later at large public readings and concerts. Over the next decades his reputation spread as the 'poet laureate of labor. ' His songs were sung by workers in sweatshops, tenement houses, meetings and concerts. In 1898, Harvard professor of Slavic Studies Leo Wiener translated Rosenfeld's Lider-bukh (The Book of Songs) into English with the title Songs from the Ghetto. The book's publication introduced Rosenfeld to the non-Jewish world and was instrumental in transforming him from an obscure local song writer into an established literary figure. His poems were subsequently translated into many European languages, including German, Hungarian, Polish, Rumanian and Russian. His works, known for their stark, realistic presentation of immigrant and sweatshop life, were the subject of many reviews and articles in … [Click Below for Full Description]
