UPTON, Bertha
Longmans, Green & Co., London 1897 - Oblong folio (213 x 278 mm). COMPLETE. Oddly collated thusly: 23, [1], 24*-25*, [1], 26-[56], 56*-57*, [57]-62, [1] pp. With 32 chromolithographs and numerous textual vignettes. Page 41 with 2" tear, a few other short tears in lower margin. Bound in original illustrated boards, green cloth spine (lower endleaf replaced in facsimile), binding soiled and quite worn along corners and spine, a well used copy, priced accordingly. This is one of the most enchanting Children's Books we have ever seen. From the creators of the famous "Golliwoggs" series, the superb chromolithographs depict all varieties of anthropomorphic plants engaged in human activities such as gardening, cooking and dancing. These fantastic illustrations are simply a joy to behold. "The Vege-Men's Revenge" relates, in verse and image, the tale of a young girl who ventures into the land of the "Vege-Men" where she taunts the vegetable inhabitants; she is taken captive by the natives who "plant" her in the ground; the girl is watered and cared for by the vegetable community and she takes root and grows into numerous manifestations of vegetables (including carrots, beets, tomatos, etc.) -- these are subsequently harvested by the citizens of the vegetable kingdom, who prepare a great feast, which is followed by a night of wild dancing and merrymaking. "The Vege-Men's Revenge" is one of only two children's books by Florence Kate Upton (1873-1922), the British scenarist-illustrator, and her mother Bertha Upton (1849-1912) that were not part of the famous Golliwoggs books.
[Click Below for Full Description]
