Nyu York (New York) ? : Z. Kantorovits, 1897-1898. Nyu York (New York) ? : Z. Kantorovits,. 1897-1898. Hardback. 1st edition. Period Cloth, 4to (large) , [65-616] pages (ie 552 pages total present) In Yiddish. Title translates as, “The New Spirit: Monthly Journal for Science, Literature and Art. ” Singerman S539, listing 7 holidings, Freidus, p. 281, Weissberger 80. Singerman lists these 10 issues as a complete run, though OCLC incorrectly lists an 11th issue, which no libraries actually hold. Alexander Harkavy (1863-1939) was a Russian-born Jewish American writer, lexicographer and linguist. “After the antisemitic pogroms of 1880 in Russia, Harkavy joined the Jewish Am Olam (Eternal People) back-to-the-land movement. Unlike Bilu, which directed its activities towards Palestine, Am Olam saw a Jewish future in the United States. In 1882 Harkavy emigrated to the United States…. In Montreal he achieved some acclaim among local Hebraists, and founded a branch of Chovevei Zion, of which he served as president. Harkavy published in lithograph form one issue of a Yiddish newspaper, Die Tzeit (The Time) , the first Jewish newspaper in Canada. He also wrote the first history of the Jews in Canada. Back in the United States he participated in the activities of the anarchist group Pionire der Frayhayt (Pioneers of Liberty) . In Baltimore he published Der Idisher Progres (Jewish Progress) in 1890. He was one of the contributors to the Jewish Encyclopedia. Burtsev, N. L.
London, Bourtzeff, [April] 1897. Octavo (18.5 × 12.5 cm). Original printed self-wrappers with tan paper spine strip; 39, [1] pp. Two photographs in the text. Good or better; trace of stamp and small loss to upper right corner of front wrapper; spine strip somewhat fragile; internally very good. First of only four published issues of this journal of the Russian socialist revolutionary movement "Narodnaia Volia" (People's Will), which is perhaps best known for its affirmation of political terrorism and the successful assassination of Tsar Alexander II in 1881. The journal was published by Vladimir Burtsev (1862-1942), a Russian revolutionary activist and publisher. Quite scandalously, the first issue openly reprimands the organization for failing to resist the Russian government and calls for assassinating Nicholas II. In 1898, Burtsev was arrested by British authorities based on this publication and sentenced to eighteen months of hard labor. Nos. 1-3 were published in London in 1897; no. 4 followed in Geneva in 1903, for which Burtsev was deported and forever banned from the country. This issue also reproduces the photographs of two terrorists who unsuccessfully conspired to assassinate Alexander III in 1889 and later died (Isaak Dembo and Ginsburg). Burtsev would later oppose the Bolsheviks after returning to Russia, and eventually he was arrested. Gorky secured his release and Burtsev once again fled Russia. He became an outspoken activist against both Soviet antisemitism as well as the fascist movements of the 1930s. William Makepeace Thackeray ( W M Thackeray )
Unknown, United Kingdom, 1897. This is a finely executed original pen and ink illustration done for a Victorian edition of William Makepeace Thackeray's book "The History of Pendennis" a beautifully evocative drawing that could have easily been a scene from a Jane Austen Novel the artwork is signed W.L. ( I have been told it could possibly be the artist William Lenton, or William Lance) there is also some speculation that it could be the artist Christine Hammond using a pseudonym, Christine also illustrated other Thackeray books as well as a Victorian edition of Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice", the artist also records their address on the back of the artwork as being No 24 Lithos Road, Hampstead, London with this information it should be possible with a bit of research to put a definite name to the artist drawn on a piece of card measuring 14 inches by 10 inches, this is a lighter item, shipping will be reduced at checkout were possible A FINE ORIGINAL VICTORIAN BOOK ILLUSTRATION WOULD MAKE A FINE FEATURE FRAMED Size: Folio - over 12" - 15" tall [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Ludwig Salvator, Österreich, Erzherzog.
Prag. Mercy.1897. 31,5 x 23,5 cm. XI, 69 S. Mit 35 Tafeln und 1 gefalteten Karte. Original Halbleineneinband. Fleckig, teils etwas bestoß. u. aufgepl. Ludwig Salvator (* 4. August 1847 in Florenz; † 12. [Click Below for Full Description]
