In 1892 Bell (1868-1926) set out on what proved to be a formative journey to Tehran, where her uncle Sir Frank Lascelles was British minister. "Having studied Persian with the oriental scholar Sandford Arthur Strong during the winter prior to her journey, she embarked on a verse translation of the mystical poet Hafiz … to which she brought an insightful interpretation of the East's cultural depth and of the underlying ambiguities of Hafiz's poems. Quer-4, 38 Lichtdruck-Taf.

Sergeant, Adeline
London F.V. White 1897 - 8vo. 232pp. + 16pp. ads. Publisher's olive green cloth titled and decorated in gilt and maroon to spine and front board.Minor edgewear and scuffing, A little bumping to spine ends, gilt bright, bump to bottom front corner of rear board; strong and handsome, a very good copy. Internally clean, a slip of paper, presumably bearing an ownership, has been snipped from the tope edge of the front flyleaf, which is annoying, and otherwise the book's only significant defect. A collection of short stories, all rather gracefully written, some with a criminous edge, some dealing with sinister family secrets, from a woman who wrote upwards of 90 novels, travelled the world and was something of a forgotten Victorian fictional mover and shaker. There's a gentle facility to several of the tales which makes them very pleasing to read. Regardless of my personal predilections, it's a nice copy of a seldom seen collection. nyc17 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Kipling, Rudyard; Power, Anastasia (bookbinder)
Barnhard Tauchnitz, Leipzig. 256pp. 12mo (4 3/4" x 6 1/2"). A book of poetry by Kipling, first published 1896. FINE BINDING by English book binder ANASTASIA POWER, 1899, with her gilt monogram on inside back cover turn-in. Binding in green-dyed morocco with extensive brown inclusions, as was possible with the Arts and Crafts bookbinders' use of vegetable dyes as a "traditional craft" element; woad and indigo, for instance, were once used extensively in medieval England. The highly attractive front cover decoration consists of a single fillet rectangle enclosing a border of large tudor roses, interspersed with five-leaved sprigs and dots, all gilt. Towards the center cover, the design continues with a double gilt fillet rectangle intersected by a double fillet diamond, the book title being gilt in the shape of a smaller diamond within, whose points consist of sets of three gilt dots. Anastasia Power has used small circles of laid-on orange leather within the inner gilt rectangular border, as well as smaller gilt dots as decoration along the outer diamond. Spine is in six raised compartments, with gilt decoration of a square of three lobed leaves and stems centering a small diamond with additional gilt dot decoration. Title is gilt in second compartment from top and the date 1897 appears at the foot. The rear board is almost identical in design to the front, save for the deletion of the laid-on orange dots, and a central design of a tudor rose. In all, it is a well- balanced and charming design, showing an increase in sophistication from her work of an earlier date. Turn-ins … [Click Below for Full Description]

Undoubtedly one of the main works of Russian science. Ivan Pavlov (1849-1936) was a Russian physiologist who contributed to many areas of neurological sciences. During the 1890s he was looking at salivation in dogs as a response to being fed, when he noticed that his dogs would begin to salivate whenever he entered the room, even when he was not bringing them food. A fine set, fresh and clean inside and out, the bindings bright with no fading of either the gilt or cloth, very minor evidence of age at the tips. SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION. Memoirs of forty-one years as a British officer and commander in India. A snapshot of the British Empire in all her grandeur, Roberts profiles the great men and battles that shaped the years of the British-Indian colonization. While Roberts was a true soldier of the empire, he also sincerely loved India. His book is dedicated "To the country to which I am so proud of belonging , to the army to which I am so deeply indebted, and to my wife without whose loving help my ‘Forty-One Years in India’ could not be the happy retrospect it is". An interesting testament to the popularity of this book---the first issue was January 4, 1897, and within six months there were 21 more editions as well as an American edition, an Indian edition, and a Braille edition. A true first edition is extremely scarce. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
