Prijs: Euro 1.950,-

IRELAND -
London, Cassell, [c. 1897]. Oblong 4to. Original green pebble-grained cloth with bevelled edges, lettered in gilt; decorated in black, all edges gilt; pp. viii, 191 pages, highly illustrated after photographs; a fine copy. Very rare first edition of an important Irish photobook. The publisher in the present volume endeavoured to give some pictorial representation of the most characteristic features to be found in Ireland. Many photographs have been taken specially for this work, with a large number taken by the well known photographers of their day throughout the country: Harrison of Bray, Robinson of Dublin, Payne Jennings of Ashtead, White of Clonskeagh, Clarendon of Kingstown, Poole of Waterford, Mahony of Cappoquin, Guy & Co., of Limerick and Cork, York of Notting Hill, Hunter of Armagh, Lee of Portrush, Ayton of Londonderry, and Lawrence of Dublin. - A little printed slip ant the beginning of the volume explains the rarity: 'Sights and Scens in Ireland, being specially prepared for Subscription, is not obtainable through the general Booksellers' (still true). Not in the National Library of Ireland. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

HOLDEN, Isaac
[Bridgeport, Connecticut, 1897. Good. A unique collection of 87 glass lantern slides (permanent positive images) from the library of Isaac Holden, an important Connecticut based phycologist, and founding editor and contributor to the monumental: *Phycotheca Boreali-Americana: A Collection of Dried Specimens of the Algae of North America*. The collection consists of two sets (a total of nearly 60 slides) of images of dried marine algae specimens ("Exsiccatae"), and a set of about 25 slides taken in and around the town of St. John's on the coast of Newfoundland. There is also a third subset of four slides with images of fauna and insects, and portrait slide of Holden as a dashing young man about to embark on an expedition. The marine algae specimens were collected by Holden at Seaside Park along the Connecticut coast and Long Island Sound in the mid-1880s. About half of the species are identified: with the manuscript Latin name, place, date, and Holden's signature reproduced in the image. Three images have been dyed in red. It's very likely that the unidentified specimens were collected by Holden and his close friend and colleague Frank Shipley Collins, who co-edited and also contributed to the *Phycotheca*. Both sets of specimens include a few charts and figures. The set of Newfoundland views date from Holden's 1897 trip to collect specimens of marine algae, many of which were distributed in the *Phycotheca*. The views are of the rocky coastline and adjoining seascapes, including a few snow-covered areas, and several images of fishermen and other inhabitants at work in t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Schwarz, Osias L.
1897. Original archive. Softcover. The 26 thick, octavo notebooks are written in a neat European hand, dated consecutively from 1897 through 1914. The first 11 volumes are written in the Czech language. From the middle of Vol. XII on, Schwarz, who is by then living in New York, writes in English. Each notebook has a title-page stating the inclusive dates of the contents and where they were written, with the earlier volumes penned in Focsani (Romania), Paris, Zurich, Berlin, Lausanne, Charlottenburg, and Sniatyn (now Ukraine, then part of the Austro-Hungarian empire). Starting with Vol. VII (April 1902-Oct. 1903), he does his writing in the U.S. His first "American" volume was partially written in NY and St. Louis, the next in St. Louis and "Pittsburg", and from Vol. IX on, he writes solely in NY and Pittsburgh. ~~ Schwarz's first "American" volume was partially written in New York and St. Louis; the next in St. Louis and "Pittsburg"; and from Vol. IX on, he writes solely in NY and Pittsburgh. ~~ With one exception, the volumes contain his "Cugetari" (translated in later volumes as "Reflections"), and these "reflections" are consecutively numbered. They vary in length from a few lines to several pages. The "cugetari" in these notebooks start at #177, and by the end of volume XXVI, Schwarz has reached #2,326. The pages in the volumes are also consecutively numbered, from pp.1- 3,524. The "Cugetari" are scholarly thoughts on a variety of topics in philosophy and ethics, e.g. Reflection #1037: "We always try to explain the unusual in terms of the usual and this is-I think-the c … [Click Below for Full Description]

Each volume bound in a different color of color-blocked silk over beveled boards with mounted paper cover labels. Minor fade to spines, else fine. Item #21072 "...this pinnacle of fine book production is one of the most beautifully crafted of all photographically illustrated books... The volumes' art advisor was Okakura Kakuzo, called 'the William Morris of Japan' for his role in documenting and preserving the arts and crafts of his homeland. Okahira was the director of Tokyo's Imperial Art School and curator of the Imperial Household Museum; as a student at Tokyo University, he had been a disciple of the transplanted Bostonian Ernest Fenollosa, one of the greatest Japonists of all time."
