"In 1888 Rosenfeld published his first collection of socialist poems...An excellent orator, Rosenfeld often recited his poems to enthusiastic audiences at socialist and union events, and later at large public readings and concerts. Over the next decades his reputation spread as the 'poet laureate of labor. ' His songs were sung by workers in sweatshops, tenement houses, meetings and concerts. In 1898, Harvard professor of Slavic Studies Leo Wiener translated Rosenfeld's Lider-bukh (The Book of Songs) into English with the title Songs from the Ghetto. The book's publication introduced Rosenfeld to the non-Jewish world and was instrumental in transforming him from an obscure local song writer into an established literary figure. His poems were subsequently translated into many European languages, including German, Hungarian, Polish, Rumanian and Russian. His works, known for their stark, realistic presentation of immigrant and sweatshop life, were the subject of many reviews and articles in … [Click Below for Full Description]

Riconda, Arturo, editor. Toppi, G., artist responsible for cover art. Translations into Italian by Amato Mori
Firenze: Casa Editrice G. Nerbini. The complete run comprised of 21 installments, or fascicoli, of an extremely scarce Italian pulp magazine that anthologized supernatural fiction. 4to. 29.5 by 19 cm. No copies on OCLC, nor in other catalogues we checked (Bibliotheca Italiana, etc.) The magazine, although produced on the cheapest of pulp paper which ages terribly, did have striking cover artwork for each of its installments. The stories presented are all translations of works in English or French, with the original authors never credited. Casa Nerbini, founded in 1897, was until 1943 a major Italian publisher of fumetti, or Italian comic books. After Nerbini folded Mondadori published some of its more popular titles. Condition: the pages are heavily age toned, the paper brittle, and there have some some discrete archival repairs made on the cover pages. Soiling to the front cover. We would nonetheless grade the volume as being in very good condition, as the issues are ones that were inevitable given the paper stock used.

Sachau, Eduard.
Stuttgart, W. Spemann, 1897. 8vo. XXIX, (1), 879, (1), 28, (3) pp. Publisher's temporary wrappers with series title stamped to upper cover. Detailed study of the Shafi'i school of fiqh named after Abu 'Abdullah Muhammad ibn Idris, Imam al-Shafi'i, or 'Shaykh al-Islam'. Al-Shafi‘i developed the science of fiqh unifying 'revealed sources' - the Quran and hadith - with human reasoning to provide a basis in law. With this systematization of shari'a he provided a legacy of unity for all Muslims and forestalled the development of independent, regionally based legal systems. The four Sunni legals schools or madhhabs- keep their traditions within the framework that Shafi'i established. The Shafi'i school is followed in many different places in the Islamic world, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Egypt, Somalia, and Yemen. - Includes the Arabic text of 'Abû-Shugâ. - An uncut, untrimmed copy. [Click Below for Full Description]

Strich-Chapell, Walter (1877 Stuttgart - 1960 Sersheim),

Paris: Imprimerie Paul Dupont, [circa 1897]. Monochromatic lithographic print (25 x 18 cm.), with minor loss to top margin and very minor creasing to sky. Verso shows minimal remnants of adhesive. Other than minor discolouration, the image is otherwise near fine. Eugène Carrière is known more for his brooding Symbolist paintings than for his ephemeral works of print. In fin-de-siècle Paris, however, the Dreyfus Affair was a daily phenomenon, with Alfred Dreyfus accused of colluding with a foreign power amidst a troubling rise of anti-Semitic and nationalist forces. Within this context, future Prime Minister Geroges Clemenceau was preparing for the publication of L'aurore (roughly translated as The dawn), a daily journal with a triple motto: "Littéraire, Artistique, Sociale." Most famously, it was on the front page of the journal in January 1898 that Émile Zola would push the Dreyfus Affair to its limit with "J'accuse," his incendiary open letter to President Faure. But first: in 1897, Clemenceau needed promotion. And so he asked Carrière for a captivating image with which to launch his paper, both for street posters, but also for smaller prints destined for bookshops and cafes. The print offered here is one of the latter; marked as "affiche d'interieur." Invoking the aesthetic of the migraine, and of that which will pass, Carrière lent his talent to the cause.
