The Secret Rose

London: Lawrence & Bullen, Limited, 1897. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition, first printing, first issue with "Lawrence & Bullen" at base of spine. Near Fine with elaborate gilt design by Althea Gyles incredibly vibrant, slightly tarnished at the edges on the front cover yet still retaining so much of it's original beauty and luster. Light rubbing to cloth at points and rear cover, ding to edge of rear board. Pages lightly toned with an occasional small blemish. A shining and bright example of a beautifully designed book, which tragically is all too often found heavily rubbed and worn. While lesser copies are abundant, one would be hard-pressed to find a nicer copy.

LIEDER-BUKH: ERSHTER THEYL LIDER BUCH: FIRST BOOK [SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR]

Nyu York(1897). 1st Edition. Original Paper Wrappers bound inside period blue boards. 8vo. 88 pages ; 21 cm. Includes the frontis photo of Rosenfeld, often missing. In Yiddish, with English and Yiddish covers. Singerman 5258. Rosenfeld sent this copy through the mail, and his handwritten name and return address, clipped from the package, has been pasted onto the English Cover. Title translates into English as, "Song Book. " Morris Rosenfeld (1862 - 1923) was a Yiddish poet whose work sheds light on the living circumstances of emigrants from Eastern Europe in New York's tailoring workshops. "In 1888 Rosenfeld published his first collection of socialist poems...An excellent orator, Rosenfeld often recited his poems to enthusiastic audiences at socialist and union events, and later at large public readings and concerts. Over the next decades his reputation spread as the 'poet laureate of labor. ' His songs were sung by workers in sweatshops, tenement houses, meetings and concerts. In 1898, Harvard professor of Slavic Studies Leo Wiener translated Rosenfeld's Lider-bukh (The Book of Songs) into English with the title Songs from the Ghetto. The book's publication introduced Rosenfeld to the non-Jewish world and was instrumental in transforming him from an obscure local song writer into an established literary figure. His poems were subsequently translated into many European languages, including German, Hungarian, Polish, Rumanian and Russian. His works, known for their stark, realistic presentation of immigrant and sweatshop life, were the subject of many reviews and articles in literary journals throughout the world....In addition to poetry, Rosenfeld also wrote essays and articles on diverse topics, including current affairs, Jewish nationalism, Yiddish language and culture, labor issues, and nature. A contributor to numerous newspapers and periodicals, he wrote for the Folkstsaytung (New York) , Arbeter fraynd (London) , Arbeter tsaytung (New York) , The Jewish Daily Forward (New York) and the Yidishes Tageblat (New York) , among others. He also edited a humorous satirical weekly, Der ashmeday, and the daily New yorker morgnblat. Rosenfeld died of a stroke in 1923 at age 61. His funeral was attended by over 10, 000 people (YIVO, 2005) . OCLC lists 9 copies worldwide. Wrappers are torn otherwise about Very Good- condition. A rare, attractive copy, with signature, from just before the author's rise to fame. (AMR-49-49)

Muhammedanisches Recht nach schafiitischer Lehre. Lehrbücher des Seminars für Orientalische Sprachen zu Berlin Bd. XVII.

Stuttgart, W. Spemann, 1897. - 8vo. XXIX, (1), 879, (1), 28, (3) pp. Publisher's temporary wrappers with series title stamped to upper cover. Detailed study of the Shafi'i school of fiqh named after Abu 'Abdullah Muhammad ibn Idris, Imam al-Shafi'i, or 'Shaykh al-Islam'. Al-Shafi‘i developed the science of fiqh unifying 'revealed sources' - the Quran and hadith - with human reasoning to provide a basis in law. With this systematization of shari'a he provided a legacy of unity for all Muslims and forestalled the development of independent, regionally based legal systems. The four Sunni legals schools or madhhabs- keep their traditions within the framework that Shafi'i established. The Shafi'i school is followed in many different places in the Islamic world, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Egypt, Somalia, and Yemen. - Includes the Arabic text of 'Abû-Shugâ. - An uncut, untrimmed copy. The Square of Sevens: An Authoritative System of Cartomancy, with a Prefatory Note

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1897. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition. xxv, [1], 72pp. Original black cloth decorated in gilt, red, green, and white, gilt topstain. Very Good+ with rubbing to gilt on front cover, evidence of removed bookplate on paste down with former owner's stamps on front free endpaper and both paste downs; she was Lenore Cosseboom, a founding member of the Church of Satan (alongside Anton LaVey) and priestess, who was apparently often used as a human altar in early COS services. A scarce occult/ literary hoax by Edward Irenaeus Prime-Stevenson, who is most-often remembered for his 1906 pioneering gay-themed novel Imre, published under the pseudonym Xavier Mayne. On top of the interesting provenance of this volume and its rarity, the cover art of this volume-- portraying a mysterious fortune-telling figure beside a black cat-- is truly excellent.

An Unknown People

London: A & H. B. Bonner. 1897. Pamphlet. 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; [LGBTQ] 7 ¾” x 5”. Stitched wrappers. Pp. [1-6] 7-37 [blank, 2] Very good: wrappers dust soiled with some tiny edge chips, a 1cm tear to the front wrapper and a ½” closed tear to rear wrapper; leaves lightly toned. “One of the earliest advocates of freedom for the people he termed “Homogenic”, Edward Carpenter set the stage over one hundred years ago for what would become today's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Freedom Movement. Carpenter's influence on Mattachine Society and Radical Fairies founder Harry Hay directly contributed to the birth of the modern LGBT movement. ” (EdwardCarpenterForum.org) Published in the wake of the anti-gay hysteria that resulted from the Oscar Wilde trials two years before, this book, Carpenter pays homage to K. H. Ulrich's pioneering works on people romantically interested in members of their own sex. He points out that homosexuals are not by their nature “abnormal or morbid” and that attempts to change their sexuality almost universally fail. He also states that the number of homosexuals in society is large enough that, “it becomes a duty for society not only to understand them but to help them to understand themselves. ”OCLC records 22 copies of this edition as well as 19 copies of an edition printed the same year stating “publisher not identified”. Hypatia Bradlaugh Bonner, the publisher of this pamphlet also published the magazine, The Reformer, where this essay first appeared. A presentable copy of a fragile publication. .

London: Swan Sonnenschein & Co, 1897. First edition of this collection of letters and articles by Karl Marx. Octavo, original cloth, folding map. Edited by Eleanor Marx Aveling and Edward Aveling. In near fine condition with light rubbing. Uncommon in this condition. Marx's theories about society, economics and politics--collectively understood as Marxism--hold that human societies develop through class struggle. In capitalism, this manifests itself in the conflict between the ruling classes (known as the bourgeoisie) that control the means of production and working classes (known as the proletariat) that enable these means by selling their labor power in return for wages. Employing a critical approach known as historical materialism, Marx predicted that, like previous socioeconomic systems, capitalism produced internal tensions which would lead to its self-destruction and replacement by a new system: socialism. For Marx, class antagonisms under capitalism, owing in part to its instability and crisis-prone nature, would eventuate the working class' development of class consciousness, leading to their conquest of political power and eventually the establishment of a classless, communist society constituted by a free association of producers. Marx actively fought for its implementation, arguing that the working class should carry out organised revolutionary action to topple capitalism and bring about socio-economic emancipation.

PLAIN AND LITERAL TRANSLATION OF THE ARABIAN NIGHTS' ENTERTAINMENTS, NOW ENTITLUED [sic] THE BOOK OF THE THOUSAND NIGHTS AND A NIGHT. With Introduction, Explanatory Notes on the Manners and Customs of Moslem Men and a Terminal Essay Upon the History of The Nights [with] SUPPLEMENTAL NIGHTS. With Notes Anthropological and Explanatory

London H.S. Nichols, Ltd. 1897 - 12 volumes. Rare and Most Probably a Unique Presentation of the Illustrated Library Edition. 142 original illustrations, including a portrait of Burton, reproduced from the original pictures in oils specially painted by Albert Letchford with one set of the original 71 illustrations presented as included by the publisher and another set individually hand-coloured. 8vo, splendid, handsome and very finely executed three-quarter gilt-bordered dark red morocco over vellum covered boards, the spine in compartments separated by wide gilt decorated raised bands, the compartments of the spine elaborately decorated and lettered in gilt with beautiful arabesque designs, t.e.g., marbled endpapers. A very handsome and unusually appealing set. The bindings are very stately and attractive and the colouring of the illustrations beautifully accomplished. We know of no other handcoloured copy being offered in recent memory. Some old stains to the edges of some leaves or plates, lower corners of a few volumes with old evidence of damp. Spines, gilt-work, bands all in excellent condition. A VERY RARE AND PROBABLY UNIQUE SET OF THIS HIGHLY IMPORTANT EDITION, THE FIRST TO BE ILLUSTRATED, AND THIS COPY WITH AN ADDED SET OF THE ORIGINAL PLATES SINGULARLY HANDCOLOURED. Nichols’ printing is a scarce and handsome edition, the first to include the illustrations by Letchford. In 1896, two years after their first edition of ARABIAN NIGHTS, the Nichols-Smithers duo commissioned Sir Richard Burton's close friend, Albert Letchford, to paint 65 illustrations for another edition as well as a portrait of Burton, and soon after commissioned for 5 more. Burton and Letchford had met several years before when Letchford was 18 when he was in Florence beginning his art education and had discussed the possibility of illustrating "Nights." "Burton's suggestion of illustrating the "Nights" had appealed greatly to Letchford on account of the unlimited scope such a subject would give to an artist who loved the East and had a boundless imagination." Letchford commenced study of Eastern images for his paintings, though only one of the illustrations was painted in Burton's lifetime. Richard Burton was one of the foremost linguists of his time, an explorer, poet, translator, ethnologist, and archaeologist, among other things. ‘The Thousand Nights and a Night’ is probably the most famous of all his many works. This translation reflected his encyclopedic knowledge of Arabic language, sexual practices and life: "it reveals a profound acquaintance with the vocabulary and customs of the Muslims, with their classical idiom," [Ency Britt] as well as colloquialisms, philosophy, modes of thought and intimate details. In contrast to Victorian mores, Burton was driven to explore what would now be called by literary critics the uncanny/Unheimliche or the unresolvable tensions of human beings. Accordingly, he recorded details of daily life and practices that were considered vulgar at the time. "The Arabian Nights" have been traced back to an ancient Persian masterpiece, the "Hazar Afsanah" or "Thousand Tales." The stories themselves can be dated from between the 8th and the 16th centuries and were for popular entertainment. They include a range of subjects from romance and fantasy, to homosexuality, bestiality, and obscenity. While a number of other English translations predated Burton’s unexpurgated version, perhaps his achieved greatest notoriety due to its copious footnotes and the "Terminal Essay" found in the last volume. They are a compendium of his private reservoir of anthrological and sexual curiosities. His discussions of female sexual education and homosexuality excited intense debate and controversy at the time of publication. Burton’s intellectual influence is far-reaching. His amazing grasp of languages and culture anticipates the globalism of the future. His geographical discoveries not only make him an interesting historical figure but also allowed for future exploration. T [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        L'Aurore. Littéraire, Artistique, Sociale. Year 12, No. 87 (13 January 1898)

The single most famous issue of the liberal and literary French newspaper, published from 1897 to 1916 under the editorial direction of Ernest Vaughan, and published by Georges Clemenceau, later the Prime Minister of France, with the headline "J'Accuse...! - Lettre au Président de la République" by Émile Zola, prefacing his article on the Dreyfus Affair. Scattered illustrations. Some tears and soiling along creases and folds, minor marginal losses. Tabloid. Paris 1898. The Dreyfus Affair was a political scandal that divided the Third French Republic from 1894 until its resolution in 1906, with the pro-Army primarily Catholic "anti-Dreyfusards" on one side and the pro-republican Dreyfusards on the other. It remains today one of the most notable examples of wrongful conviction, with notable influence coming from the press and public opinion. In December 1894, Captain Alfred Dreyfus was convicted of treason and sentenced to life imprisonment for allegedly communicating French military secrets to the German Embassy in Paris. In 1896, evidence came to light identifying a different French Army officer, Major Ferdinand Walsin Esterházy, as the true culprit. High-ranking officers suppressed the evidence, and Esterházy was acquitted. Dreyfus was instead accused of additional charges based on falsified documents. Word of the cover-up spread, mainly owing to Zola's story in L'Aurore, and activists subsequently put pressure on the government to reopen the case. Finally, in 1906, Dreyfus was exonerated and reinstated as a major in the French Army.

London: George Allen, 1895-1897 - 6 volumes, quarto. Original cream-coloured cloth, gilt lettered spines, front covers lettered in red and with large pictorial gilt stamp, top edges gilt, others untrimmed. A grand production, printed by the distinguished Chiswick Press on handmade paper, lavishly illustrated by Walter Crane and edited by the book collector and forger T. J. Wise – "of all people" (Percy Muir). Crane's designs encompass both an Art Nouveau and an Arts & Crafts aesthetic – he had, of course, worked with Morris at the Kelmscott Press – and this edition of Spenser's epic was issued at the height of his fame: he had an exhibition of his work touring Europe "and he was delighted to find that German collectors and museums bought his allegorical paintings, which chimed with German symbolist work" (ODNB). It was one of his last substantial commissions. [Attributes: First Edition]

" Morris Rosenfeld (1862 – 1923) was a Yiddish poet whose work sheds light on the living circumstances of emigrants from Eastern Europe in New York's tailoring workshops. "In 1888 Rosenfeld published his first collection of socialist poems. An excellent orator, Rosenfeld often recited his poems to enthusiastic audiences at socialist and union events, and later at large public readings and concerts. His works, known for their stark, realistic presentation of immigrant and sweatshop life, were the subject of many reviews and articles in literary journals throughout the world. In addition to poetry, Rosenfeld also wrote essays and articles on diverse topics, including current affairs, Jewish nationalism, Yiddish language and culture, labor issues, and nature.
