Edited and with an introduction by Richard Le Gallienne. First Printing of this Edition. STRIKING MODERN BLACK MOROCCO, GILT, FOR ASPREY (stamp-signed on front turn-in), covers with checkerboard of squares formed by plain gilt rules, each with a gilt fish, angling accoutrement, or author's cypher at center, upper cover with large central square containing a gilt-stamped reproduction of the decorative title cartouche from the first edition; raised bands, spine gilt in compartments with angling-themed centerpiece and leafy frond cornerpieces, densely gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. In the original purple Asprey box with tissue wrapping. Frontispiece portrait, vignette on title, and numerous illustrations in the text, 53 of them full-page, by Edmund H. New. Coigney 275. This is a handsomely bound copy of Le Gallienne's attractively illustrated edition of Walton's bucolic classic, with text from the fifth edition, the last to receive the author's own revisions. The attractive binding is as new, the text shows no sign of use, and one could scarcely wish for a better copy. The high-end New Bond Street emporium Asprey has been a London fixture since 1781, serving as jewellers to a long line of British monarchs, and they sell a range of luxury goods, including finely bound books (for a short time, they even owned the merged firms of Zaehnsdorf and Sangorski & Sutcliffe).

Map of the Black Hills of South Dakota and Wyoming with full descriptions of mineral resources, etc

Custer City, SD [map printed in Philadelphia]: Samuel Scott [map printed by E. P. Noll & Co], 1897. Small octavo. (7 1/4 x 4 1/4 inches). pp. [2], 1-40. 1 folding chromolithographed map (sheet size: 31 x 28 1/2 inches) after Scott, published by E.P. Noll & Co of Philadelphia. Original brown cloth, the upper cover lettered in gilt "Rocks, / Minerals, / and other / Resources / of the / Golden / Black Hills / of / South Dakota / and / Wyoming". A prospector's copy of this interesting survey, the issue with the coloured map: "the first book on descriptive mineralogy of the Black Hills. Today highly sought after as a Black Hills mining relic" (Loomis). This work was published with the fine map coloured (as here) or uncoloured. Scott's large map of the Black Hills region depicts topographic features and various towns, including Deadwood, Sturgis, and Custer City. "For legibility, and for tracing streams to their sources, this is still a useful map of the Hills" (Jennewein). The present example is annotated in pencil with notes suggesting that the original owner of this map was attempting to set up a prospecting/mining operation near Clifton, Wyoming, in the south west corner of the Black Hills. Further notes on the verso of the map and the facing page suggest that the unidentified individual was looking for manganese. L. Leonard Jennewein, Black Hills Booktrails , 229; Thomas A.         La naissance de la paix par René Descartes

With an Important Inscription by Aragon Explicating the History of the Text (Aragon, Louis 1897-1982). La Naissance de la Paix par René Descartes: ballet dansé au château royal de Stockholm le jour de la naissance de Sa Majesté (1649). Paris: Bibliothèque Francaise pour les amis de l’auteur, J. Dumoulin, (1946). Copy #128 of 300 signed by Aragon. In addition, this copy bears a full-page inscription Aragon. 4to. Original wrappers, glassine. 34p. plus colophon. With an inscription which reveals the bibliographic history of the original [translation]: “Your father has requested that I write a poem on the dance for you. It is not possible because I am incapable, but this book is on dance. It is a description of a ballet by René Descarte written in 1649 for the birthday of the Queen of Sweden. There must be a manuscript in Stockholm, but I based my writing on a manuscript which existed before the war in the Bibliotheque Nationale, which has since vanished. Here I have expanded the text with comments. For precious Sandra for when she is a big girl who will charm the world with her dancing. Signed, Aragon 18 June 1977.” When René Descartes was 54, he went to Stockholm at the invitation of Queen Christina. It is said that because Descartes refused to dance at a court ball, Queen Christina charged him with writing the verses for a court ballet, La Naissance de la Paix. The ballet was composed for performance on 8 December 1649, the 23rd birthday of the Queen. It celebrates the Peace of Westphalia at the end of the Thirty Years’ war, which was more or less won by Sweden. According to a recent study by Richard Watson “the evidence of Descartes’ authorship is virtually nonexistent... Almost certainly the ballet was written by Helie Poirier, a professional writer of French verse.” References: Watson, Richard A. (2007). Descartes’s Ballet .

A nice copy. (OCLC 38536407)Halford [formerly Hyam], Frederic Michael, angler and writer on fly-fishing, did not invent dry-fly-fishing: it had been practiced for some years in several parts of England. But techniques were still primitive and haphazard, equipment was defective, and there was little guidance in books. It was Halford's achievement to pull together the many practices and ideas, to systematize them, and to add a number of new elements. See ODNB for a full Bio

Autograph Letter Signed, 8vo folded, 3pp., on University College, London letterhead, April 2, 1897

He writes to a colleague, "Dear Mr. Morrillier, Have you seen an account of M. Havotaux's election to the Academie francaise in today's paper? He got 18 votes out of a total of 34, but the odd 16 did not vote against him, but put in blank ballot-papers. Had they been 19 instead of 16 he would have been rejected. This is the state of things at the Chemical Society, but owning to the unbusiness-like way they have of conducting their affairs, Duvais has been declared elected. The actual number of votes he received for him is unknown; it is guessed at as 165. Publication of the numbers voting & not voting has been asked for, & accorded; and then we shall know. But I am understood to have had about 160 votes. There were present quite 380 fellows. Hence the Chemical Society has no president, for the bylaws render it necessary that, for election, a majority of the fellows present shall vote in favour of the candidate. I have no wish to be president, as I think I told you before; but I am strongly opposed to Duvais being president; & if the above bylaw were carried out, I should not be elected, to my own private satisfaction. But I think this might well be pointed out publicly, not as scoring for me, (please leave reference to me out of any which you write) but as scoring against him. A re-count has been asked for, & it is promised that the matter shall be brought before the Council. The Council will probably try to temporise and hinder the re-count, but in the interests of the Society as a body for managing its own affairs, as well as of conducting scientific business, it could do well to point out the mess they have got into. They should not be allowed to leave matters in status quo. I shall be glad to tell you all particulars, if you care to see me. But these are the facts of the case." He signs it, "Yours sincerely, W. Ramsay."

Sanborn Map of Sing Sing for the exclusive use of F.J. Washburn. Agent N.Y. Nov 1897

Sanborn Perris Map Co.New York:: Sanborn-Perris Map Co.,. 1897.. Third edition with additions. Hardcover. Folio, published in November 1897 with 18 hand colored maps, including a title page on the key map. This is the third edition of the atlas according to the Library of Congress Census, the first edition being published in 1886 but with only 13 sheets. The second edition was published in 1891 with an extra 2 sheet making a total of 16 sheets . Small private library stamp on the verso of the key map. There are very small pencil annotations on the maps obviously by F.J. Washburn the local insurance agent. Originating in London in the mid 18th century insurance maps had become invaluable in the US in the 1860's when Sanborn started work. The company started to standardize the maps and publish them in atlases under the town or city. Each map/sheet measures 21 x 25" and is drawn to a scale of 50 feet to an inch, with color applied by hand at the time of publication. Every atlas records all town buildings shown to scale, its construction material and use noted, as well as fire- proofing, thickness of walls, elevators, chimneys, fire alarm boxes, hydrants, sprinkler systems and a wealth of other detail. Ultimately Sanborn produced maps and atlases for 12,000 locations. Being so specific, the demand was very slight. The Library of Congress estimates that there were usually fewer than twenty orders for a single sheet so production was small and usually produced for a specific Insurance company or agent. Because of this, a very small number of copies of any atlas are offered on the market today. The maxim "if it turns up buy it because you won't find another copy" springs to mind. Maroon leather spine with printed hard boards, rubbed but edges but very good condition.

The Holy Bible: Containing the Old and New Testaments According to the Authorised Version, with Illustrations by Gustave Dore

sp;- London,Paris and Melbourne - Cassell and Company, 1897 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A lovely copy of Gustave Dore's illustrated bible. With hundreds of Dore's striking full page illustrations throughout. With Family Registers of Births, Deaths, Marriages etc, still blank, with decorative borders. Including the Old and New Testaments and the Apocrypha. (Louis Auguste) Gustave Dore (18321883). A child prodigy, Dor received little formal artistic training, but his talents as a draughtsman were already apparent during his school years. His first lithographic album was published by Aubert in Paris in 1847. After three years working under contract as a caricaturist for the editor Charles Philipon (18001862), he added book illustration to his repertory. Dore's production as an illustrator remains unmatched for scope or ambition. Among his major works are editions of Rabelais (2nd expanded edn, 1873), Balzac (Contes drolatiques, 1855), Dante (Divine Comedy, 1861, 1868), Charles Perrault (Fables, 1862), Cervantes (Don Quixote, 1863), Milton (Paradise Lost, 1866), La Fontaine (Fables, 1867), Tennyson (Idylls of the King, 1867), Coleridge (The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, 1876), and Ariosto (Orlando Furioso, 1879). Dor also illustrated a host of minor works in a variety of genres. Dore's achievements in the field of illustration earned him polite critical applause, official honours, including the chevalier de la Legion d'honneur (1861) and officier de la Legion d'honneur (1878), and enormous public acclaim. His work was particularly popular with the British public. From 1856 until his death he worked as much for London as for Paris publishers. From 1868 the Dore Gallery in New Bond Street displayed examples of his work in every genre, and he contributed regularly to the Illustrated London News. DNBDore's Bible was published in various styles, all, by Cassell's standards, decidedly costly. In parts, it was four shillings per paper-covered number, and the total of sixty-four parts could then be bound in two handsome cloth cases at nine shillings each. It was also available complete, at prices from eight to fifteen pounds. It was intended as a family possession, a treasure, sumptuous, magnificent. The new Cassell's publication was the work of one artist, a Frenchman of genius. For the bourgeois nineteenth century, to possess Dore's Bible was like owning a great cycle of masterpieces, like having a copy of Giotto's Arena Chapel in the family. (dorebible. com)Condition: In a half morocco binding. Externally excellent, very little shelfwear. Internally, firmly bound. Bright and clean throughout. Small rust marks to some gutters. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED.

        The Faerie Queene

Westminster - Archibald Constable and Co., 1897 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Ascarce editionof thiscomplete sixvolume copy of'The Faerie Queene' by Edmund Spenser. Spenseris recognised as one of the premier craftsmen of Modern English verse in its infancy, and one of the greatest poets in the English language. The Faerie Queene is an incomplete English epic poem by Edmund Spenser. The first half was published in 1590, and a second installment was published in 1596. The Faerie Queene is notable for its form: it was the first work written in Spenserian stanza and is one of the longest poems in the English language. It is an allegorical work, written in praise of Queen Elizabeth I. In a completely allegorical context, the poem follows several knights in an examination of several virtues. In Spenser's A Letter of the Authors, he states that the entire epic poem is cloudily enwrapped in allegorical devises, and that the aim of publishing The Faerie Queene was to fashion a gentleman or noble person in virtuous and gentle discipline. The Faerie Queene found political favour with Elizabeth I and was consequently a success, to the extent that it became Spenser's defining work. The poem found such favour with the monarch that Spenser was granted a pension for life amounting to 50 pounds a year, though there is no evidence that Elizabeth l read any of the poem. Includes a frontispiece to the beginning ofeach volume with tissue guards. Condition: In gilt half morocco bindings with marbled boards. Externally, inexcellent condition. Internally, firmly bound, verybright and clean with some uncut pages. Overall Condition: FINE..
