        THE INVISIBLE MAN

First edition. Original red cloth with gilt lettering to the spine and vignette in black on the front cover. Author's presentation copy, to fellow author, W.W. Jacobs. Inscribed on the half title, "W.W. Jacobs. from H.G. Wells". A very good copy, with the spine faded and a little wear to the corners. The covers are bright and the hinges sound, with some browning to the page edges. Loosely inserted in the book is Jacobs' woven silk bookmark bearing his monogram. Probably the most famous of Wells's 'scientific romances', in which a scientist finds a way of turning himself invisible without the means to make himself visible again. Wells explores the morality of being able to go unseen as it causes the protagonist to become mentally unstable. Inscribed first editions of this work are rare and this one has the added bonus of being a gift to another 19th century detective fiction writer. William Wymark Jacobs (1863-1943), author of novels and short stories, wrote in a number of genres, but is best known for his supernatural thrillers such as The Monkey's Paw.         Ink Drawings & Watercolours - "Aegyptisk Maleri"

London, 1897. Original Manuscript Ink Drawings And Watercolour Drawings Made in 1897 Egyptian Tomb Paintings from Thebes Mummy Sarcophagus Boxes in the British Museum London, 1897. Manuscript colour representations of ancient Egyptian paintings and reliefs made by formidable dynasties, drawn on the spot by a Danish visitor to the British Museum where the antiquities are held. Each captioned in pencil by the artist, who is identified on the title page as Marie Christiansen. Comprises 19 manuscript drawings coloured in ink and 1 uncoloured pencil sketch, placed within a string-tied portfolio. Oblong 8vo. amber over taupe cloth binding. Leafs measures approximately 25 x 17 cm. Recent manuscript title page and captions are in Danish. Fraying to boards, otherwise in excellent condition, internally clean and bright, pleasing vibrant renditions. "Marie Christiansen: 20 blade med farvelagte kopier af Ægyptisk Maleri i British Museum. London 1897." [Marie Christiansen: Coloured Drawings of Egyptian Paintings in the British Museum on 20 Sheets] Eloquent imagery of Ancient Egyptian paintings which adorned stately mausoleums are skilfully represented in vivid ink drawings by a nineteenth century artist and enthusiast who evidently spent considerable time observing the display of antiquity acquired by the British Museum only seventy years earlier. The work features paintings of mythical gods and goddesses illustrated on mummy boxes, Egyptian civilians bringing offerings, as well as a mural painting and fresco from an important tomb in ancient Thebes. Most captions state dynastic periods and origin. Deities here include Nut or Neuth - the goddess of the sky in the Ennead of Egyptian mythology; Osiris, eldest son of Nut - usually identified as the god of the afterlife, the underworld and the dead; and Hapi - the god of the annual flooding of the Nile; From the tomb chapel of Nebamun, 18th Dynasty (c.1350 BC), paintings show Nebamun inspecting flocks of geese and herds of cattle, a farmer surveying field boundaries on his behalf, and garden scenes. Nebamun was a scribe and the accountant in charge of grain at the great Temple of Amun at Karnak. [In the 1820s the British Museum acquired 11 wall-paintings from the tomb chapel of a wealthy Egyptian official called Nebamun. The depictions are highly symbolic and thematically related to a joyful afterlife and are some of the most famous works of art from Ancient Egypt. Excavated in a time before systematic archaeology, the tomb is thought to have been in the northern part of the necropolis of Dra Abu el-Naga, on the West Bank of the Nile at Thebes, although the collector, Egyptologist Henry Salt, never revealed the location.] . Very Good.

This document appoints the owner of the New York Giants baseball team Postmaster of New York City, in part: "...for and during the term of four years from the twelfth of May, 1897..." Co-signed by James A. Gary as postmaster General. This document is uniformly toned with two discoloration marks caused by the disintegration of the original ribbon; slight weaknesses at the center fold which do not detract from the dark bold signatures. Very good(-) condition. Cornelius Van Cott was the owner of the New York Giants National League Baseball Club from 1893-1897. He had been appointed Postmaster of New York City by President Cleveland from 1889-1893. Upon completion of this commission, he purchased The New York Giants.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

A Child-World [Signed Association Copy] [A Child World]

Indianapolis: The Bowen-Merrill Company, 1897. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good +. A Very Good + copy of the first edition, first printing -- with the variations required for the first printing (spine ends pushed, several pushes to the board edges, small spot to the spine tail), SIGNED AND DATED BY JAMES WHITCOMB RILEY as follows: "To Joseph Knight, Esq. / With all hale greetings and regards / - James Whitcomb Riley / Indianapolis, Ind., USA / Oct. 9: 1896", and housed in a custom-made slipcase with a buttressed spine lettered, decorated, and dated in gilt. This copy retains the original deep red to the spine and boards and is without the fading usually seen with this title, and the top edge is gilded. Published subsequent to the UK edition (1896), the book's inscription resides on a tipped-in leaf which Riley prepared for this and some other copies before the books were bound and ready for distribution, such inserted leaves being dated Oct. 9: 1896 as is the case with this copy. Clearly Riley had decided prior to the volume's completion to whom he wanted to present such copies and such persons naturally would have been those who were his close friends and associates. This copy carries the bookplate of the inscribee, Joseph Knight, to the front pastedown. Tipped in above Knight's bookplate is that of George A. Zabriskie and his son's name is embossed near the top of the first front free endpaper. Joseph Knight was editor of "Notes and Queries", the drama critic of the "Globe" in London, and a theater historian. (The University of Indiana holds correspondence between Riley and Knight.) George A. Zabriskie was President of the New York Historical Society and an expert bookbinder, and Fosdick Zabriskie was his son. A Very Good + copy with an excellent Provenance, INSCRIBED, SIGNED, PLACED, AND DATED BY JAMES WHITCOMB RILEY.
