Poems. With an introduction by Walter Raleigh

London: George Bell, The Endymion Series, 1897. 8vo, [xxiv], 337, [3] pp. Frontispiece, numerous plates, vignettes, and head- and tail-pieces from process blocks after Bell. Contemporary full brown morocco art nouveau binding by Zaehnsdorf for Truslove and Hanson, upper cover richly gilt with designs of lilies in onlaid green and white morocco, rich gilt stamping and the border lettered in gilt with a quotation from Keats, backstrip richly gilt, in a brown quarter morocco box. First edition in the Endymion Series, the de luxe version limited to 125 copies on Japan vellum, original wrappers bound in, an exceptionally fine copy. ?'Bell [1863Ð1933] came out of the Arts and Crafts movement, but he was content to draw in line for process reproduction. Though there is a suggestion of Ricketts about some of his work, of Daphnis and Chloe in his designs for KeatsÕs poems, and of De Cupidinis et Psyches Amoribus in his designs for ShelleyÕs, he was an accomplished book artist who knew how to impress his personal style on each of the major books he illustrated. Apart from The Tempest of 1901, his best work was done for the Endymion Series?" (Ray, The Illustrator and the Book in England, p. 182).

        Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Sorrent, 4. April 1897.. 2 SS. auf Doppelblatt. 8vo.. Metal from the sunken warship U S S Maine, molded into a bust of Abraham Lincoln

A 6" x 4.25" high-relief profile bust of Abraham Lincoln, cast in brass from the U.S.S. Maine, the warship that sunk following an explosion in Havana on February 15, 1897. The bust has been mounted to a 9.75" x 10.5" wooden base. A small slip of paper on the verso reads: "This head was cast at the Navy Yard in Washington from metal that was [from] the battleship Maine." Typical age wear to wooden base, bust bears some light green oxidation, else very good condition. The U.S.S. Maine, which had been ordered to Cuba to protect American interests during the anti-Spanish insurrection there, exploded on the night of February 15, 1898. Americans immediately suspected Spanish sabotage, and the explosion became a rallying cry for those advocating war against Spain: "Remember the Maine; to Hell with Spain." Although two American investigations concluded that the ship was struck by a submarine mine, later inquiries, beginning with a 1974 study commissioned by Admiral Hyman Rickover, concluded that the explosion had been triggered when coal stores spontaneously combusted which was located next to the forward powder magazine. Ironically, Rickover's conclusions closely matched those of an inquiry initiated by Spanish authorities in Cuba soon after the incident. This is one of the most unusual relics associated with the sinking of the U.S.S. Maine that we've encountered. Exactly why smiths at the Washington Navy Yard chose to render a bust of Lincoln with metal recovered from the Maine is unknown. However, Lincoln's stature as a national martyr was still fresh in the minds of many Americans, especially more senior officers serving in the Spanish-American War, many of whom saw their first service during the Civil War. A very interesting association piece which the man who saved the Union with the event that signaled the dawn of an American overseas empire.

First edition. Original red cloth with gilt lettering to the spine and vignette in black on the front cover. Author's presentation copy, to fellow author, W.W. Jacobs. Inscribed on the half title, "W.W. Jacobs. from H.G. Wells". A very good copy, with the spine faded and a little wear to the corners. The covers are bright and the hinges sound, with some browning to the page edges. Loosely inserted in the book is Jacobs' woven silk bookmark bearing his monogram. Probably the most famous of Wells's 'scientific romances', in which a scientist finds a way of turning himself invisible without the means to make himself visible again. Wells explores the morality of being able to go unseen as it causes the protagonist to become mentally unstable. Inscribed first editions of this work are rare and this one has the added bonus of being a gift to another 19th century detective fiction writer. William Wymark Jacobs (1863-1943), author of novels and short stories, wrote in a number of genres, but is best known for his supernatural thrillers such as The Monkey's Paw. Fraying to boards, otherwise in excellent condition, internally clean and bright, pleasing vibrant renditions. "Marie Christiansen: 20 blade med farvelagte kopier af Ægyptisk Maleri i British Museum. London 1897." [Marie Christiansen: Coloured Drawings of Egyptian Paintings in the British Museum on 20 Sheets] Eloquent imagery of Ancient Egyptian paintings which adorned stately mausoleums are skilfully represented in vivid ink drawings by a nineteenth century artist and enthusiast who evidently spent considerable time observing the display of antiquity acquired by the British Museum only seventy years earlier. The work features paintings of mythical gods and goddesses illustrated on mummy boxes, Egyptian civilians bringing offerings, as well as a mural painting and fresco from an important tomb in ancient Thebes. Most captions state dynastic periods and origin. Deities here include Nut or Neuth - the goddess of the sky in the Ennead of Egyptian mythology; Osiris, eldest son of Nut - usually identified as the god of the afterlife, the underworld and the dead; and Hapi - the god of the annual flooding of the Nile; From the tomb chapel of Nebamun, 18th Dynasty (c.1350 BC), paintings show Nebamun inspecting flocks of geese and herds of cattle, a farmer surveying field boundaries on his behalf, and garden scenes. Nebamun was a scribe and the accountant in charge of grain at the great Temple of Amun at Karnak. [In the 1820s the British Museum acquired 11 wall-paintings from the tomb chapel of a wealthy Egyptian official called Nebamun. The depictions are highly symbolic and thematically related to a joyful afterlife and are some of the most famous works of art from Ancient Egypt. Excavated in a time before systematic archaeology, the tomb is thought to have been in the northern part of the necropolis of Dra Abu el-Naga, on the West Bank of the Nile at Thebes, although the collector, Egyptologist Henry Salt, never revealed the location.] . Very Good.
