      1897. Original photograph album. String-tied Boards. Very Good. This album of photographs taken by Captain Edward D.P. Nickels, Master of the "May Flint," contains 15 albumen print photographs with handwritten captions, mounted one per leaf, with tissue guards (and one unmounted), in a string-tied album made by the Captain's wife, Emma Curtis Nickels. Green paper boards, 5.75" x 7.25". The photographs vary in size from 4.5" x 3.5" to 3.25" x 3.25" These original 1897 photographs show the "May Flint" in the Delaware River and in the aftermath of a hurricane at the New York Bight, where Long Island and New Jersey form an upside-down L around shallow waters, a hurricane alley. (The "May Flint," originally an iron steamship named "Persian Monarch," had been enroute three years earlier from London to New York when a terrific storm drove her onto the beach at Long Island on 3 May 1894. After the storm, she was broken up, re-launched, and sold. All engines were removed. She was converted to a sailing vessel and renamed "May Flint" by her new owners, Flint & Co.). The photographs in this album are captioned: "May Flint" in the Delaware River; Next morning after the hurricane; Main and Mizen from the top gallant forecastle; Clearing wreckage at the Main; Wreckage about the deck; Bending the double Topsail; Hoisting main Topmast; Taken lying off Staten Island; &c. Captain Nickels, a Boston commander of high repute and much experience, was master of the clipper ship "Flying Fish" as well as captain of the "May Flint." ~~ Laid into this album are three cabinet-card photographs. The first is of Captain Nickels, made in his home town of Searsport, Maine, and signed [by him?] on the verso. The second cabinet card is of the Captain's wife, Emma Curtis Nickels, done by Morse of San Francisco, and signed [by her?] on the verso. The third photograph is of the Captain in later years, done by Taber of San Francisco, inscribed and signed by the Captain on the verso: "With the compliments of the season / David Nickels." The cabinet cards range in size from 6.5" x 4" to 8.5" x 5.25"

Original green cloth with covers decoratively stamped in blind and spine decoratively stamped and lettered in gilt. Some spotting to front board, otherwise an excellent example of this rare book with cloth and gilt very fresh and bright. One of the most important scientific works of the last two centuries, On the Origin of Species was (and still is) also one of the most controversial. The book caused an uproar immediately upon its publication. Before publication of the Origin, Darwin wrote to his publisher John Murray:' It may be conceit, but I believe the subject will interest the public.' The first edition of 1250 copies sold out quickly. With copies of the First English Edition approaching 6 figures, this very nice copy of the 6th edition is an appealing alternative.       - Aquarell, über Bleistift, auf Velin, links unten signiert „Cham". 19,1:13,1 cm. Ecken schräg geschnitten. Der aus adeliger Familie stammende Zeichner und Lithograph Noé absolvierte seine künstlerische Ausbildung bei dem Historienmaler P. Delaroche (1897-1856) und bei dem besonders für seine Darstellungen aus dem Soldatenleben und seine Karikaturen bekannten N.-T. Charlet (1792-1845). Anschließend widmete er sich zunächst der grotesken Zeichnung. Ab 1840 nahm er das Pseudonym „Cham" an. 1842 kamen seine ersten Karikaturen heraus. Nachfolgend hielt er hauptsächlich die politischen und auch alltäglichen Ereignisse des Tages parodierend fest, die er für Almanache, besonders für den „Almanac prophétique" und für das Musée Philipon anfertigte. 1854-1873 war er vor allem für die satirische Zeitschrift „Charivari", für die auch H. Daumier (1808-1879) arbeitete, tätig. Auch die englischen Zeitungen „Punsch" und „Illustrated News" veröffentlichten seine Zeichnungen. Ab 1860 schrieb er auch Komödien, die ihm im Gegensatz zu seinen Karikaturen jedoch wenig Erfolg einbrachten.

A panoramic view looking from the northwest with the Navy Yard and downtown Brooklyn in the foreground, reaching as far as Seagate and Coney Island at the right horizon. The Post Office and Eagle Building are named, along with various parks and cemeteries. The smoke stacks and church steeples together with the masted ships at the docks contrast with the extensive unpopulated areas to paint a picture of a vibrant and growing community. As Napoleon I, he was Emperor of the French from 1804 until 1814, and again in 1815. Napoleon dominated European affairs for nearly two decades while leading France against a series of coalitions in the Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars. He won several of these wars and the vast majority of his battles, rapidly conquering most of continental Europe before his ultimate defeat in 1815. One of the greatest commanders in history, his campaigns are studied at military schools worldwide and he remains one of the most celebrated and controversial political figures in Western history.  In civil affairs, Napoleon implemented several liberal reforms across Europe, including the abolition of feudalism, the establishment of legal equality and religious toleration, and the legalization of divorce. His lasting legal achievement, the Napoleonic Code, has been adopted by dozens of nations around the world.Napoleon was born on the island of Corsica to a relatively modest family of noble Italian ancestry. From 1789, Napoleon supported the Revolution and tried to spread its ideals to Corsica, but he was banished from the island in 1793. In retaliation, Napoleon established the Continental System in 1806 to cut off European trade with Britain and the Fourth Coalition took up arms against him. The French initially focused their attack on the Prussians, crushing the latter at the battles of Jena and Auerstedt in October 1806. After knocking out Prussia, Napoleon turned his attention towards the Russians and eventually annihilated them in June 1807 at the Battle of Friedland. Friedland forced the Russians to accept the Treaties of Tilsit in July 1807, often regarded as the high watermark of the French Empire.Napoleon tried to compel Portugal to follow the Continental System by sending an army into Iberia. In 1808, he declared his brother Joseph Bonaparte the King of Spain, which precipitated the outbreak of the Peninsular War, widely noted for its brutal guerrilla warfare. In 1809 the Austrians launched another attack against the French. Napoleon defeated them at the Battle of Wagram, dissolving the Fifth Coalition formed against France. After the Treaty of Schönbrunn in the fall of 1809, he divorced Josephine and married Austrian princess Marie Louise in 1810. By 1811, Napoleon ruled over 70 million people across an empire that had near-total domination in Europe, which had not witnessed this level of political consolidation since the days of the Roman Empire.  He maintained his strategic status through a series of alliances and family appointments to royal households. Napoleon launched a new aristocracy in France while allowing for the return of nobles who had been forced into exile by the Revolution.Escalating tensions over the existence of a Polish State and the Continental System led to renewed enmity with Russia. To enforce his blockade, Napoleon launched an invasion of Russia in 1812 that ended in catastrophic failure for the French. In early 1813, Prussia and Russia joined forces to fight against France, with the Austrians also joining this Sixth Coalition later in the year. In October 1813, a large Allied army defeated Napoleon at the Battle of Leipzig. The next year, the Allies launched an invasion of France and captured Paris, forcing Napoleon to abdicate in April 1814. He was exiled to the island of Elba. The Bourbons were restored to power and the French lost most territories they had conquered since the Revolution. However, Napoleon escaped from Elba in February 1815 and returned to lead the French government, only to find himself at war against another coalition. This new coalition decisively defeated him at the Battle of Waterloo in June. He attempted to flee to the United States, but the British blocked his escape route. He surrendered to British custody and spent the last six years of his life in confinement on the remote island of Saint Helena. His death in 1821, at the age of 51, was received by shock and grief throughout Europe and the New World. In 1840, roughly one million people lined the streets of Paris to witness his remains returning to France, where they still reside at Les Invalides."Books are in poor to very good condition.  Covers, although still extremely attractive, are in poor condition in that the front cover of Volume One and the rear cover of Volume Two are both detached.  The edges of the covers appear to be still in good condition but there is some rubbing wear to the corners.  The areas at the joints where the two covers are detached shows roughness.  In addition, both spine covers are present, but detached from each volume.  A gold border is applied to the pastedowns of each cover with attractive pastel to the paper of the pastedowns and endpapers.  The interior of each volume is another story as they are both in very good or better condition.  Pages are clean and complete but do show some age discoloration to the paper.  Especially, it appears, to the paper used for the extra illustrations as they show brownness around the edges.  However, the illustrations themselves seem to be immune from the discoloration.  Each extra illustration has a tissue paper protector.  This tissue paper also shows discoloration bled from the illustration paper.  Text pages also show age discoloration to a lesser extent but this also appears to be discoloration bled from the pages of the extra illustrations.  Pages have gilt applied to the edges.  Interior binding is still in very good condition as all pages are still well attached.From Wikipedia -"Rev. Sabine Baring-Gould (28 January 1834 ?" 2 January 1924) was an English Anglican priest, hagiographer, antiquarian, novelist and eclectic scholar. His bibliography consists of more than 1240 publications, though this list continues to grow. His family home, Lew Trenchard Manor near Okehampton, Devon, has been preserved as he had it rebuilt and is now a hotel. He is remembered particularly as a writer of hymns, the best-known being "Onward, Christian Soldiers" and "Now the Day Is Over". He also translated the carol "Gabriel's Message" from the Basque language to the English.Sabine Baring-Gould was born in the parish of St Sidwell, Exeter on 28 January 1834.  The eldest son of Edward Baring-Gould and his first wife, Sophia Charlotte (née Bond), he was named after a great-uncle, the Arctic explorer Sir Edward Sabine.  Because the family spent much of his childhood travelling round Europe, most of his education was by private tutors. He only spent about two years in formal schooling, first at King's College School in London (then located in Somerset House) and then, for a few months, at Warwick Grammar School (now Warwick School). Here his time was ended by a bronchial disease of the kind that was to plague him throughout his long life. His father considered his ill-health as a good reason for another European tour.In 1852 he was admitted to Cambridge University, earning the degrees of Bachelor of Arts in 1857, then Master of Arts in 1860 from Clare College, Cambridge.  During 1864, he became the curate at Horbury Bridge, West Riding of Yorkshire. It was while acting as a curate that he met Grace Taylor, the daughter of a mill hand, then aged fourteen. In the next few years they fell in love. His vicar, John Sharp, arranged for Grace to live for two years with relatives in York to learn middle class manners. Baring-Gould, meanwhile, relocated to become perpetual curate at Dalton, near Thirsk. He and Grace were married in 1868 at Wakefield.  Their marriage lasted until her death 48 years later, and the couple had 15 children, all but one of whom lived to adulthood. When he buried his wife in 1916 he had carved on her tombstone the Latin motto Dimidium Animae Meae ("Half my Soul").Baring-Gould became the rector of East Mersea in Essex in 1871 and spent ten years there. In 1872 his father died and he inherited the 3,000 acre (12 km²) family estates of Lew Trenchard in Devon, which included the gift of the living of Lew Trenchard parish. When the living became vacant in 1881, he was able to appoint himself to it, becoming parson as well as squire. He did a great deal of work restoring St Peter's Church, Lew Trenchard, and (from 1883?"1914) thoroughly remodelled his home, Lew Trenchard Manor. Baring-Gould wrote many novels including The Broom-Squire set in the Devil's Punch Bowl (1896), Mehalah and Guavas, the Tinner (1897), a collection of ghost stories, a 16-volume The Lives of the Saints, and the biography of the eccentric poet-vicar of Morwenstow, Robert Stephen Hawker. His folkloric studies resulted in The Book of Were-Wolves (1865), one of the most frequently cited studies of lycanthropy. He habitually wrote while standing, and his desk can be seen in the manor.One of his most enduringly popular works was Curious Myths of the Middle Ages, first published in two parts during 1866 and 1868, and republished in many other editions since then. "Each of the book's twenty-four chapters deals with a particular medieval superstition and its variants and antecedents," writes critic Steven J. Mariconda.  H. P. Lovecraft termed it "that curious body of medieval lore which the late Mr. Baring-Gould so effectively assembled in book form."He wrote much about the Westcountry: his works of this topic include:A Book of the West. 2 vols. Der aus adeliger Familie stammende Zeichner und Lithograph Noe absolvierte seine künstlerische Ausbildung bei dem Historienmaler P. Delaroche (1897-1856) und bei dem besonders für seine Darstellungen aus dem Soldatenleben und seine Karikaturen bekannten N.-T. Charlet (1792-1845). Anschließend widmete er sich zunächst der grotesken Zeichnung. Ab 1840 nahm er das Pseudonym "Cham" an. 1842 kamen seine ersten Karikaturen heraus. Nachfolgend hielt er hauptsächlich die politischen und auch alltäglichen Ereignisse des Tages parodierend fest, die er für Almanache, besonders für den "Almanac prophetique" und für das Musee Philipon anfertigte. 1854-1873 war er vor allem für die satirische Zeitschrift "Charivari", für die auch H. Daumier (1808-1879) arbeitete, tätig. Auch die englischen Zeitungen "Punsch" und "Illustrated News" veröffentlichten seine Zeichnungen. Ab 1860 schrieb er auch Komödien, die ihm im Gegensatz zu seinen Karikaturen jedoch wenig Erfolg einbrachten.

Extremities gently rubbed, small dent to bottom edge of both boards, a few minor marks to cloth, the occasional spot or light finger mark to contents but overall bright and crisp. An excellent copy. Frontispiece photographic portrait, photographs and diagrams throughout. First edition of the author's book on chronophotography and proto-film reels. Charles Francis Jenkins (1867–1934) was a prolific inventor (over 400 patents were issued to his name) and an important pioneer of cinema and television. He devised a "motion picture projecting box", which, on 6 June 1894, became the first apparatus to project a film in front of an audience, an event which took place at Jenkins's cousin's jewelry shop in Richmond, Virginia. That same year the Lumière Brothers shot "Workers Leaving The Lumière Factory", which is generally considered to be the first film ever made but which was not shown until 28 December 1895. Picture Ribbons is a surprisingly comprehensive work, considering it was written at the infancy of film. As well as presenting Jenkins's projector, the "Phantoscope", the book covers all aspects related to film reels, from manufacturing, photographing and developing, to perforating and splicing. First performed at the Paris Opera on February 19th 1897, Messidor was the first of Bruneau's operas for which Emile Zola, the famous novelist and close friend of the composer, wrote the libretto. "The issues of class conflict and distasteful social realities dealt with in the Bruneau-Zola collaborations can hardly have endeared the composer to the richer patrons of the Opera. Messidor, for example, the story of a village community starved of water because a wealthy industrialist has diverted a river to purify gold, brought an entirely new, and by no means entirely welcome, level of social realism into establishments traditionally dealing only with the historical, the fictional and the make-believe... Messidor was the first opera to use prose specifically in the service of naturalism... In an important article 'Vers ou prose', originally published in Le Figaro in 1897 and reprinted in his collection of essays Musiques d'hier et de demain, [Bruneau] defended the practice, although he returned to verse librettos in his later, less naturalistic works."       Cambridge, Mass 1897 - Young Woman's Tour of the West, 1887 The journal of a young Boston woman's travels out West in 1887. Her itinerary takes her through Port Huron, Chicago, Lincoln Park, Lake Michigan; then the via train through Kansas, across the Rockies, through the Southwest, Santa Fe, Arizona ('saw many horrible Indians"), crossed the Colorado River (the bridge was proniunced unsafe by Mr. Aldrich"), on to Los Angeles and excursions in Southern California (including a trip to the San Gabriel Wine Co. and a tasting of their 14-year old 'Angelica'; San Francisco and the Bay area,the Stock Exchange ("I never heard such a noise. The were very excited and hollering to the top of their voices"), Chinatown, a visit to an Opium Den, the theater ("there are no lady actors they are all men"); on the Portland, Oregon, Mt. Hood, the Dalles, Mt. Tacoma, etc. Perhaps the high point of the diary comes with a lengthy visit to the recently established Yellowstone Park, finally to the Grand Canyon, and then back home. Red straight-grained morocco with gilt-stamped "Record" on spine.         Very early applied radiology [Röntgen photographs, X-rays] including the first use of X-rays in authentication of fine art (i.e. painting by Albrecht Dürer).

Set of nine extremely early, mint conditioned X-Ray-photographs mounted on six presentation cardboards (three with two photographs each) and with manuscript descriptions; the photographs measuring between 6.6 x 5.6 cm, and 34.4 x 23.6 cm, all housed in contemporary gilt cloth portfolio titled "Album".l A set of very early Röntgen photos; in all, seven anatomical and two art-historical X-rays, as follows: (1) the large-scaled (34.4 x 23.6 cm) negative of a painting ascribed to Albrecht Dürer, named "Der segnende Heiland" (Christ with a crown of thorns). The painting, once owned by Mr. Friedrich Burger, who ran an art gallery in Munich, had first been extensively described by Dr. Oscar Freiherr Lochner von Hüttenbach in a paper in 1894, where Hüttenbach clearly states that the painting should be attributed to Albrecht Dürer. Apparently Mr. Burger still had trouble selling the painting, because in January 1897, he let Friedrich Haller & Söhne try a completely new method of authenticating his painting; by means of X-ray. According to a newspaper article clipped from the "Allgemeine Zeitung", mounted on the backside of the card board, and dated in a contemporary hand "26/I 97" (= January 26th 1897) this X-ray indeed proved that this was a true Dürer, marking the photographs for sale as the first known attempt to verify a painting's authorship by this revolutionary method. The story was considered so important, it was repeated at length in the New York Daily Tribune of 11 April 1897: "A new test for old paintings. The genuineness of an Albrecht Duerer proven by X-Rays. The practical value of Röntgen's famous discovery lies in its revelations of the unseen. While the applications of this instrument of research have hitherto been confined almost entirely to surgical diagnosis, yet there are other important uses to which it can be put..." The X-rays reveal the date 1524, whereas previously the work was thought to date from 1521, and a previously unknown Gothic text. This is the oldest known verification of a piece of fine art by the means of X-rays revealing information about an old masters paintings' history hidden behind layers of paint, varnish, and dirt. The present whereabouts of this painting are unknown. We presume it was lost during WWII, or (less likely) it is hidden away somewhere in a private collection. It was not until the 1920's that X-rays were regularly used in the analysis of old paintings. From the newspaper article we learn something interesting about the rarity of these particular X-ray photographs, too; as it states that only a few copies were sent to a handfull of distinguished people in Europe. "The Queen Regent of Spain having been thus complimented, she sent her specimen to one of the academies of art in Spain, and it was the subject of favorable comment there." (2) the somewhat smaller scaled positive of the former number (21.5 x 15 cm), here the painting is depicted much more clearly with better contrast; (3) a 42-year-old woman's skull; (4) a man's hand, signed in the photographic plate "Armin Flümthal - similar to the first X-Ray in history, depicting either Röntgen's or his wife's hand"; (5) the lower part of the body of a 13-year-old female with malformed legs; (6) a man's foot with a crocked grown fracture; (7) the pelvis of a 17-year-old woman with a deformed pin to fix a fracture; (8) the pelvis of a 12-year-old boy - all of which so far are negative proofs; (9) the large-scaled (life-sized?) positive of #4 above, stating the time of exposure of three minutes (!) All photos in an exceptionally mint condition. All with the atelier's label mounted to the back side. Provenance: the medical doctor, Karl Theodor, Duke in Bavaria (1839-1909), who founded the Augenklinik Herzog Carl Theodor (the Duke Charles Theodore Eye Clinic) in Munich in 1895..

        The Cape Crowned Crane

      A Monograph of Cranes, Leiden and London 1897 - G.F. Westerman, the Director and Founder of the Zoological Garden of Amsterdam, commissioned Heinrich Leutemann to begin a work on a monograph that showcased the cranes residing at the zoo. Most of the illustrations of cranes were drawn from life by Leutemann on location at the Zoological Garden. The completed monograph contained seven additional drawings done by J.G. Keulemans, as well as text written by F.E. Blaauw. Each beautifully hand colored image is accompanied by both the English and Latin name, as well as other common names for the bird, a full description of plumage at both immature and adult stages, and a discussion of habits.
