Townsend, 1893-1906; with descriptions of new species. III. Mollusca of Bombay Madras Andamans etc. / Papers on the Mollusca of Bombay: Karachi: Aden: Madras: Torres Straits: Andamans: etc. Also on Conus: Cypraea: Harpa: etc. 50 original works by Melvill and 11 by other authors, all on shells or brachiopods from the western Indian Ocean.. The British malacologist J. C. Melville (1845-1929), son of the like-named Under-Secretary of State for India and grandson of the last secretary of the East India Company, James Cosmo Melvill (1845-1929) described more than 1,000 new molluscs between 1881 and 1928. "Perhaps Melvill is best remembered for his Persian Gulf, Gulf of Oman and Arabian Sea work, for by himself or with co-authors he described nearly 600 new species or varieties from that region" (A. Trew). The present three-volume set deals exactly with that material, mostly collected by F. W. Townsend, captain of the Cable-Ship "Patrick Stewart", when inspecting the Eastern Telegraph Company's cables at the bottom of the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman. Townsend sent the shells that were found on the cables first to G. B. Sowerby, later directly to Melvill, and all were described by the latter, usually together with the Assistent Keeper of Zoology at the Manchester Museum, Robert Standen (1854-1925). In contrast to many contemporaries, Melvill took great care in illustrating his new species. The three "Melvill papers" volumes are titled on spine and title pages as cited above. The compiler of these three volumes has added, in neat handwriting, the titles, for each volume a list of the contents by title, a consecutive page numbering and an index to all the new and illustrated species and genera. It is unknown who compiled these volumes, though it could have been John Read le Brockton Tomlin, "a protege of J. C. Melvill [...] Tomlin added to the collection considerably and also collected a unique library of molluscan books and reprints" (Trew). In all there are 50 original works by Melvill, and 11 by other authors (e.g. E. A. Smith, R. Standen, and G. B. Sowerby III) but also dealing with shells or brachiopods from the western Indian Ocean, often relating directly to Melvill papers. One is F. W. Townsend "Notes on shell collecting in the northern parts of the Arabian Sea, including the Gulf of Oman and Persian Gulf in the years 1890-1914". The vast majority are original offprints; some, mostly smaller papers were taken from magazines and carefully mounted on blank paper. Each of the offprints itself is a rarity, and a collection like this one is absolutely unique. - A. Trew, Melvill's new molluscan names. The book is bound in the ORIGINAL publisher's yellow cloth with some wear to the spine and discoloration to the panels. The binding of the book is tight with light rubbing and foxing to the endpapers. There is NO writing, marks or bookplates in the book. Overall, a very good copy of this scarce first edition.         The Beetle

      London, Skeffington. 1897, 1897. First Edition. 8vo. Publisher's dark red cloth titled in gilt to spine and front board. Decorated in green and black with a striking egyptian eye motif and, naturally enough, a large beetle to the front board. Faded to spine, bumped to spine ends, minor edgewear, a strong, handsome copy of a scarce book. Internally clean, patterned endpapers, frontis. with tissue guard, front inner paper-joint cracked. This copy bears the ownership inscription of the publisher Harold E. Skeffington, dated September 1897, to the half title. One of the best selling novels of the late nineteenth century; The Beetle remained in print for over 60 years, effortlessly outselling its now far better known competition, a certain Dracula being amongst them. Subsequent literary endeavours by people like Boothby and Rohmer clearly owe a lot to Marsh's really rather high calibre tale of evil oriental interlopers with insidious powers and sinister intentions. A handsome association copy of an important book.

        The Pierrot of the Minute

      London: Leonard Smithers,, 1897. A Dramatic Phantasy in One Act. Large octavo (pp. 43). Original green cloth over bevelled boards, gilt lettered spine and front cover, pictorial gilt stamps from designs by Beardsley on front and back covers, top edges gilt. Title page printed in red & black; frontispiece, initial letter, vignette and cul-de-lampe by Beardsley. Binding a little shaken and rubbed (more noticeably at the extremities), short closed-tear at head of frontispiece (not affecting illustration) with old tape repair mark on verso. First edition, one of only 300 copies printed on paper, a further 30 were printed on Japanese vellum. Pierrot of the Minute brought together three of the major figures of fin de siécle London: the poet Ernest Dowson, considered by T. S. Eliot to be the most gifted and technically perfect of his age, the publisher Leonard Smithers, and the illustrator Aubrey Beardsley. It is one of Beardsley's last books. He described it as "delightful" and "well he might, for... in its design, paper, bindings, and, of course, with Beardsley's wonderful pictures and cover design, make it one of the finest of all the "Smithers books" (James G. Nelson, Publisher to the Decadents: Leonard Smithers in the careers of Beardsley, Wilde, Dowson, 2000, p. 157).

The mounts measure within a quarter inch of 14 x 17". 20 images are mounted on cream colored card, with plain guard sheets. Also 74 images mounted on thick dark gray card. There is some damp damage to the margin of the mounts, mostly not affecting the plates. About 15 of the 20 images on cream card have some marking on the plate, mostly from adherence of the guard sheet to the image. "Perhaps the greatest tour de force in chromolithography ever executed. Vignette in black on front board. Very clean and crisp binding. Pages somewhat browned/yellowed, with very occasional minor foxing, more especially on prelims. This came from the library of AWF Fuller and the ffep carries a pencilled inscription, which is almost certainly in his hand, describing where the action of the story takes place and other references relevant to the story. Tiny chip, only noticeable on very close inspection, from lower half fore edge of ffep which has been repaired with a small piece of invisible book page professional quality tape. Martin was a member of the "Author's Club," based in Louisville, Kentucky in the 1890s. The literary club met for mutual encouragement and criticism about their writing. Other members included authors Alice Hegan Rice and Annie Fellows Johnston; geographer Ellen Churchill Semple; and journalist Eva Madden (the author's sister). Ladies in the club eventually had a total of 50 published books to their credit. Martin had her greatest success with her second book "Emmy Lou: Her Book And Heart," published in 1902. This copy bears a signed ink presentation on the front endpaper: "Happy Christmas- To little Jeannette. With love from Mrs. Rice. December twenty-fifth, 1897." The inscription is not in the handwriting of Alice Hegan Rice but may be by a relative- perhaps her mother-in-law? I have been unable to locate any auction or Internet price records for this title and the Huntington Library in San Marino, California lists no copy in Wright's bibliography of the library's holdings.         Manuscript Family Magazine - Photos & Illustrations

Unpublished juvenile manuscript magazine produced by teens of the notable literary Strachey family, being the nieces and nephews of writer and critic Giles Lytton Strachey. Also with contributions by future artist Dorothy Shakespear (later wife of Ezra Pound, American modernist poet and critic), including an early sketch drawing and a photograph of her as a teen. Titled "Young Companion," an unusual and impressive work, featuring 33 painted manuscript illustrations, most of which are watercolours and many being the monthly issue's frontispiece, numerous in-text manuscript ink drawings, 39 albumen print photographs, and 2 tipped in manuscript letters. Photographs vary in size, the smallest measuring approximately 4.5 x 3 cm, and the largest 15 x 11 cm. 8vo. 204, 130 pages, respectively. Bound in 2 volumes, half calf over blue marbled boards with recent cloth spine repair, preserving original labels. Volumes measure approximately 20 x 24.5 cm. Scant few leafs loose, photographs fading, otherwise in very good condition, neatly presented and beautifully illustrated. Produced by the progeny of suffragist Rendel (née Strachey) who is and elder sister of famous British author Giles Lytton Strachey, and spanning a two year period, these bountiful volumes provide insight into their lifestyle, priorities, and notable affiliations, literary and otherwise, as well as rare, private family snapshot photographs. The contributors are also the grandchildren of Sir Richard Strachey, and Lady Strachey who was an enthusiast for languages and literature, making her children perform their own plays and write verse from early ages. Evidently Elinor encouraged the same, as well as visual arts. The editor outlines two family trees, one of their father's Rendel family, the other of Richard and Jane Strachey and their children. A fascinating connection in England's elite literary society is revealed in these volumes. Through her mother who was a novelist, young Dorothy Shakespear - future artist and wife of American poet Ezra Pound - was closely associated to the unconventional and dynamic Strachey family. As a new contributor, an original photograph of Miss Shakespear accompanies the announcement. Excerpt from meeting minutes: "The staff who very much wished to have a proof of Miss Shakespear's oratorical power asked her to honour the assembly with a few words from the platform... Miss Shakespear choose for her subject: The Play of Julius Caesar at Her Majesty's Theatre..." She is then cross-questioned by the panel about the play. Upon joining the youthful literary group, her creative contributions include a sketch illustration, and an entertaining letter written in the style of Brutus' speech, to one of the Rendels who was ill. In this photograph Dorothy Shakespear Pound (1886-1973) is 12-13 years old. The daughter of novelist Olivia Shakespear, Dorothy was among literary circles most of her life. She grew to became an artist, one of few female vorticist painters, her art work being published in the short-lived but influential literary magazine called BLAST. In 1914 Dorothy married American expatriate and poet Ezra Pound, whom she would spend 47 years with. Ezra Pound influenced and advanced the careers of some renowned writers such as Hemingway, Eliot, Joyce, Lewis, Frost, Williams, and Conrad Aiken. He also befriended and helped Marianne Moore, Louis Zukofsky, Jacob Epstein, Basil Bunting, E.E. Cummings, Margaret Anderson, George Oppen, and Charles Olson. A notably superior analect for the age of the producer, writers and artists, exuding the influence of some of England's revered literary individuals, and yielding a broad spectrum of subject matter, the work is complete with editor's column, meeting minutes, illustrated frontis pages for numbered issues, and foreign correspondence. The producer/editor appears to be Elinor's first daughter Elizabeth, and the sub-editor is little Andrew, both of whom are also contributors. Their sister Elizabeth provides artwork, usually in the form of watercolours, while Frances Elinor ('Ellie') writes entertaining accounts and poetry, sometimes including in-text manuscript drawings. The birth and earliest events of their brother, Elinor's fifth child, William Vincent Rendel born in 1898, is chronicled in the second volume. An ambitious editor, Richard solicits further contributions from cousins, aunts and uncles and grandmother. We find a musical score with words by Lady Strachey, and music by her son Oliver Strachey (1874-1960), who was a musician, author, civil servant and cryptographer for Britian in the two World Wars. [At Bletchley Park he headed the ISOS section deciphering various messages on the Abwehr network involved with turned German agents (part of the Double Cross system).] His cousin, Leila Margaret Rendel (1882-1969), furnishes among other things, a most skillful frontis watercolour for the May 1898 issue, which is initialled and dated. [Later social worker, children's campaigner, and friend of Eleanor Roosevelt, she is the daughter of civil engineer William Stuart Rendel, granddaughter of London civil engineer Sir Alexander Meadows Rendel (1828-1918)]. Other relations contributing include Robin Rendel, Betty Rendel, and a Miss B. Rendel. Contributions are also made by a paternal relation H.R. Ricardo, who is the young Sir Harry Ricardo (1885-1974), pioneer of the combustion engine which was coined the Ricardo Comet. He includes scientific instructions with diagrams for making oxygen and hydrogen, notes on the silk worm, and the construction and use of an electrophorus, each with manuscript drawings for illustration. The editor further procures bits from Alma, Anna and Ralph Ricardo. Other examples of entries made in this clever manuscript magazine: A letter from Bengal accompanied by 8 original photographs of performance bears and monkeys, in which the writer deems The Young Companion to be "a valuable paper which has made the despair of all competitors in the East and at home," signed "Your obedient servant, Jungly-Wallah". This is most conceivably from their grandfather, Lieutenant-General Sir Richard Strachey (1817-1908), British soldier and important administrator in British India associated with the Bengal Engineers. A photograph and description of a sojourn to Lawford Hall which mentions their uncle, Giles Lytton Strachey, "... Lytton stepped out on the balcony and made several speeches to us in an exceeding comic manner about the abolition of slaves." Lytton would become a famous writer and critic, pioneering biographer and author of 'Eminent Victorians.' A photograph of the most northerly railway station in Europe, with transcript of a letter from engineer F.E. Robertson describing it An autobiographical sketch by their mother, Elinor Rendel, in a sequel, her earliest recollections beginning with her toddler years in Ootacamund (Ooty) in the Nilgiri Hills of India... about age twelve befriending Lady Louisa Bruce (daughter of the Viceroy of India, Victor Bruce, 9th Earl of Elgin)... so forth. A subsequent memoir drawn from their grandmother, Jane Maria Strachey, née Grant, with her first memories being in Rothiemurchus, Scotland, at ages three and four, then of her home Ashwick, near Shepton Mallet, and making "excursions to Portland... deeply interested in seeing the convicts at work in the Quarries," then her life in India and being nicknamed "Mother Bunch" by Lord Elgin. Herein is outlined the career of their grandfather Richard Strachey, first with the Bengal Engineers in 1836, being knighted into the Order of the Star of India, etc. A visit to Whitestaunton in Somerset is described by Frances Elinor Rendel over several pages, illustrated with photographs and manuscript drawings. Her narrative includes a ghost story, and mentions Mr. Bond, and Mr. Elton - Charles Isaac Elton (1839-1900) famous author, lawyer, antiquary, politician, and notable resident. A noteworthy and detailed account of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee procession in London June 1897, made by four contributors, accompanied by 5 photographs. Grandfather Strachey had hired an omnibus for private viewing. The family's private cook made a Jubilee cake with red white and blue sugar. Activities at Rickettswood, the residence of civil engineer Sir Alexander Meadows Rendel (1829-1918), their paternal grandfather, including 'lectures,' a paperchase, and a cricket match - complete with scores and photographs. An account of the lavish affair in celebration of Sir Richard Strachey's 80th birthday in 1897 makes mention Lady Strachey, Aunt Pippa and Aunt Dorothy in spectacular gowns for attending the 'Queen's drawing room'. Both sisters to their mother Elinor, aunt Philippa Strachey (1872-1968) was later a suffragist, and Dorothy Bussy née Strachey (1865-1960) was a novelist and translator. Other topics of interest include recipes, plays, search puzzles, fashions, scientific experiments, local jargon, a sojourn to Helvellyn mountain, Christmas in Epsom, historical events, such as the Battle of Waterloo and S. A. Andrée's Arctic Balloon Expedition of 1897, gardening, cooking, cleaning ivory, comical bits, and more. Each issue begins with an illustrative watercolour title page representing its contents, save one which is drawn but not painted. In and of themselves rendering a charming visual memorial of family events, scenes feature the six children walking on stilts, the baby on a bicycle, a view of the Queen's carriage on Westminster Bridge during her Jubilee, readers mobbing the editor's door, one of the girls reading the 'The Young Companion' while cycling, and so on. As leading writers artists, women's suffragists, and civil servants, connected to notable figures in the United States, the Strachey family epitomises the shifting tenor of English life from the high Victorian Period into an era of significant political changes to empower labourers and women in particular, and of expanding art, literature, and fashion. An Unconventional and Singular Literary Work Connecting Dorothy Shakespear Pound, Giles Lytton Strachey, and Others! Elinor Rendel, née Strachey, (1859/60-1944), was born in India, and is the eldest daughter of Sir Richard Strachey GCSI, FRS (1817-1908), British soldier and Indian administrator, and Lady Strachey (1840-1928), formerly Jane Maria Grant, a well-known author and supporter of women's suffrage. She is the sister of famous authors Lytton Strachey, James Strachey, Oliver Strachey and Dorothy Bussy née Strachey. Other siblings include James Beaumont Strachey, Marjorie Strachey, (Joan) Pernel Strachey, Philippa ('Pippa') Strachey, Ralph Strachey, and Richard John Strachey. Elenor was married to James Meadows Rendel in late 1882 in Wandsworth, London, and managed a succession of affluent homes, thanks to the success of her husband. They had the following children: Elizabeth Rendel (born 1883); Frances Elinor Rendel (1885-1942), active suffragist with the National Union Women's Suffrage Societies (NUWSS); Colonel Richard Meadows Rendel OBE JP, (1887-1966); William Vincent Rendel (born 1898); and Andrew James Rendel (1890-1945). Her brother Giles Lytton Strachey (1880-1932), was a writer and critic. A founding member of the Bloomsbury Group and author of Eminent Victorians, he is best known for establishing a new form of biography in which psychological insight and sympathy are combined with irreverence and wit. At the University of Liverpool, Strachey befriended the Professor of Modern Literature, Walter Raleigh, who, besides being his favourite teacher, also became the most influential figure in his life before he went to Cambridge. Her sister Dorothy wed an impoverished French painter of modest social background and maintained her household largely by taking in paying guests, a most unusual situation for a woman of her upper-middle-class background. Her mother, Jane Maria Grant, Lady Strachey (1840-1928) was a writer, a literature enthusiast, and passionate feminist. She was born on board the 'Earl of Hardwick' off the Cape of Good Hope on 13 March 1840. Considerably younger than her husband, her father's secretary Sir Richard Strachey, she became his second wife in 1859. A tall and impressive looking woman, she designed her own, slightly unconventional clothes. Her household was always busy with scientific, artistic, and politically active friends, and her ten surviving children. She was very ambitious for her children and encouraged them to read widely, to write, and to act. Lady Strachey's father was the Anglo-Indian administrator Sir John Grant of Rothiemurchus in Speyside, who would later be Lieutenant Governor of Bengal. Ezra Weston Loomis Pound (1885-1972) was an expatriate American poet and critic who was a major figure of the early modernist movement. His contribution to poetry began with his development of Imagism, a movement derived from classical Chinese and Japanese poetry, stressing clarity, precision and economy of language. His best-known works include Ripostes (1912), Hugh Selwyn Mauberley (1920) and the unfinished 120-section epic, The Cantos (1917-69). Working in London in the early 20th century as foreign editor of several American literary magazines, Pound helped discover and shape the work of contemporaries such as T. S. Eliot, James Joyce, Robert Frost and Ernest Hemingway. At a literary salon in January 1909, Pound met the novelist Olivia Shakespear, Yeats' former lover, and was introduced to her daughter Dorothy. They married several years later in 1914. Through Olivia Shakespear he was introduced to W. B. Yeats - the greatest living poet in Pound's view - and they became close friends. In June 1910 Pound returned to the United States for eight months; his arrival coincided with the publication of his first book of literary criticism, The Spirit of Romance, based on his lecture notes at the polytechnic. His essays on America were written during this period. In November 1913 Yeats, whose eyesight was failing, invited Pound to stay with him as his secretary in Stone Cottage, Sussex, where Yeats had rented rooms. They stayed there for 10 weeks, reading and writing, walking in the woods and fencing. It was the first of three winters they spent together at Stone Cottage, two of them with Dorothy after she and Pound married on 20 April 1914. The Pounds settled in Paris in January 1921 where he became friendly with Marcel Duchamp, Tristan Tzara, Fernand Léger and others of the Dada and Surrealist movements, as well as Basil Bunting, Ernest Hemingway and his wife Hadley. In the fall of 1922 he met 26 year old American violinist Olga Rudge in Paris, beginning a love affair that lasted 50 years. Still married to Dorothy, he spent the following summer in the south of France with Olga, where he worked with George Antheil to apply the concept of Vorticism (Dorothy's art medium) to music. During this time he wrote two operas, including Le Testament de Villon, and wrote pieces for solo violin, which Olga performed. His legacy is his influence in advancing the careers of some of the best-known modernist writers of the early 20th century. In addition to Eliot, Joyce, Lewis, Frost, Williams, Hemingway and Conrad Aiken, he befriended and helped Marianne Moore, Louis Zukofsky, Jacob Epstein, Basil Bunting, E.E. Cummings, Margaret Anderson, George Oppen, and Charles Olson. Many of his contemporaries, however, were outrage at his wartime collaboration with Mussolini's regime, and his anti-semitism has generally tainted the evaluation of his poetry.. Very Good.

Accompanied by the original brown paper packaging with additional autograph notation by Harte and addressed to Harte, postmarked November 1897. Two tiny stains to the first page of the manuscript, mailing folds. Minor fold separations to first page of typescript, one horizontal mailing fold. Overall very good. In a cloth chemise with red morocco label in gilt, with two modern bookplates, in a blue morocco clamshell case. An extraordinary surviving literary treasure from one of the West's legendary authors, comprising working drafts of Bret Harte's account of his time as a gold digger, probably in the Stanislaus River region in Tuolumne or Calaveras county. Both the manuscript and typescript have holographic corrections in the author's hand. Little is known of Harte's life between his arrival in Oakland in 1854 and his move to San Francisco in 1860 to work for the GOLDEN ERA. His work in the gold-mining regions that figures so prominently in his work occurred during this dark period in his biography, and are of the most interest to Harte scholars. This present manuscript is one of the most important sources for researching Harte's experiences during this mysterious period. This story provides some of the best detail on how Harte first became acquainted with the mines and miners which figure so prominently in his most famous works. "[This sketch] lays no claim to biographical accuracy, and certain improbable incidents were doubtlessly elaborated for the sake of giving point to the narrative. The story…employs the first person - with Harte usually a sign of autobiographic tendency. Harte's sisters accepted it as essentially accurate; so did his devoted friend [T. Edgar] Pemberton. The narrative, moreover, has the ring of authenticity; the intimate experiences and petty difficulties of the boy walking to the mines are hardly ones which an elderly gentleman would be able to imagine in London" - Stewart. ^The typescript, the first seven pages of which are present here, has been corrected in manuscript to be nearly identical to the published version. Most notable in both typescript and manuscript are the passages which were entirely deleted from the published version which first appeared in the American periodical, YOUTH?'S COMPANION in 1899. The published version numbers approximately 3800 words and Harte's own notation on the packaging indicates the original story was 4500 words. Deleted passages include the first paragraph recounting Harte's experiences with mining and his bad first impression of miners: "I suspect that I never really caught what was then called - 'the gold fever' - an infection to which an imaginative and errant school boy like myself might have been unduly susceptible. I never had the faith of a gold seeker. Even the glamour of emigration to a distant and unknown country did not include the hopeful vision of picking up gold nuggets in the streets of San Francisco...I remember that at first the returning successful or unsuccessful miner as I saw him in the streets of San Francisco, unkempt of hair and beard and patched of trowser, did not strike my boyish fancy as an heroic figure. His implements were not picturesque, and in his kit or outfit the frying pan and the kettle were shamelessly obtrusive...Let any of my youthful readers, unused to manual labor, imagine himself condemned for days, weeks and perhaps even years, to the regular task of digging, shovelling and carrying earth in a wheelbarrow to a dirty stream to be as regularly washed; let him further imagine that his only reward for this toil was just sufficient to procure him the plainest food and he will have some idea of gold digging as practised by at least two-thirds of the mining population of California - even in what was known as its 'flush times.'" Later, Harte wrote of the visual environment in California, especially around the gold mines themselves: "In that absolutely clarified air, it seemed only a few hundred feet away. In point of fact it was nearly two miles as the crow flies, and a hawk swinging midway up the abyss, seemed larger than the crawling miners besides the canvas tents. There were gashes and excavations on the mountain side - and a rugged gap in the files of pines; there were hovels, misshapen sheds, and piles of debris.?" ^From the celebrated collection of Estelle Doheny copy, with her bookplate on the folder, sold as lot 720 at the auction of her collection at Christie's on Feb. 2, 1988, where it realized $18,000.
