[AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT, SIGNED OF HARTE'S ACCOUNT OF THE CALIFORNIA GOLD RUSH, "MY EXPERIENCES AS A GOLD DIGGER"] [with:] [CORRECTED TYPESCRIPT OF THE SAME STORY RETITLED IN MANUSCRIPT, "HOW I WENT TO THE MINES"]

[Arford House, Headley, Hampshire, England, 1897. Quarto. Loose sheets. Accompanied by the original brown paper packaging with additional autograph notation by Harte and addressed to Harte, postmarked November 1897. Two tiny stains to the first page of the manuscript, mailing folds. Minor fold separations to first page of typescript, one horizontal mailing fold. Overall very good. In a cloth chemise with red morocco label in gilt, with two modern bookplates, in a blue morocco clamshell case. An extraordinary surviving literary treasure from one of the West's legendary authors, comprising working drafts of Bret Harte's account of his time as a gold digger, probably in the Stanislaus River region in Tuolumne or Calaveras county. Both the manuscript and typescript have holographic corrections in the author's hand. Little is known of Harte's life between his arrival in Oakland in 1854 and his move to San Francisco in 1860 to work for the GOLDEN ERA. His work in the gold-mining regions that figures so prominently in his work occurred during this dark period in his biography, and are of the most interest to Harte scholars. This present manuscript is one of the most important sources for researching Harte's experiences during this mysterious period. This story provides some of the best detail on how Harte first became acquainted with the mines and miners which figure so prominently in his most famous works. "[This sketch] lays no claim to biographical accuracy, and certain improbable incidents were doubtlessly elaborated for the sake of giving point to the narrative. The story…employs the first person - with Harte usually a sign of autobiographic tendency. Harte's sisters accepted it as essentially accurate; so did his devoted friend [T. Edgar] Pemberton. The narrative, moreover, has the ring of authenticity; the intimate experiences and petty difficulties of the boy walking to the mines are hardly ones which an elderly gentleman would be able to imagine in London" - Stewart. The typescript, the first seven pages of which are present here, has been corrected in manuscript to be nearly identical to the published version. Most notable in both typescript and manuscript are the passages which were entirely deleted from the published version which first appeared in the American periodical, YOUTH'S COMPANION in 1899. The published version numbers approximately 3800 words and Harte's own notation on the packaging indicates the original story was 4500 words. Deleted passages include the first paragraph recounting Harte's experiences with mining and his bad first impression of miners: "I suspect that I never really caught what was then called - 'the gold fever' - an infection to which an imaginative and errant school boy like myself might have been unduly susceptible. I never had the faith of a gold seeker. Even the glamour of emigration to a distant and unknown country did not include the hopeful vision of picking up gold nuggets in the streets of San Francisco...I remember that at first the returning successful or unsuccessful miner as I saw him in the streets of San Francisco, unkempt of hair and beard and patched of trowser, did not strike my boyish fancy as an heroic figure. His implements were not picturesque, and in his kit or outfit the frying pan and the kettle were shamelessly obtrusive...Let any of my youthful readers, unused to manual labor, imagine himself condemned for days, weeks and perhaps even years, to the regular task of digging, shovelling and carrying earth in a wheelbarrow to a dirty stream to be as regularly washed; let him further imagine that his only reward for this toil was just sufficient to procure him the plainest food and he will have some idea of gold digging as practised by at least two-thirds of the mining population of California - even in what was known as its 'flush times.'" Later, Harte wrote of the visual environment in California, especially around the gold mines themselves: "In that absolutely clarified air, it seemed only a few hundred feet away. In point of fact it was nearly two miles as the crow flies, and a hawk swinging midway up the abyss, seemed larger than the crawling miners besides the canvas tents. There were gashes and excavations on the mountain side - and a rugged gap in the files of pines; there were hovels, misshapen sheds, and piles of debris." From the celebrated collection of Estelle Doheny copy, with her bookplate on the folder, sold as lot 720 at the auction of her collection at Christie's on Feb. 2, 1988, where it realized $18,000.

Autograph letter signed in full to the music publisher George Hartmann, dated September 18, [18]97.

      - La chevalier d'or, a Rosicrucian "pantomime si esthétique de Madame [Jean- Louis] Forain," was intended for private performance at her Paris home, probably for Christmas 1897. Although Debussy had evidently completed a musical plan for the pantomime, he never finished it. In a letter, dated 1 November, Debussy tells René Peter that Le chevalier was "naturally still not finished." When Madame Forain gave him a deadline to complete the work, Debussy remarked that it would be just as easy "to learn Assyrian" as to comply with it. Robert Orledge in Debussy and the Theatre, p. 264. George Hartmann (d. 1900) secured the rights to all Debussy's works for 500 francs a month in 1895. In a letter to Pierre Louys, Debussy wrote "[Hartmann] was sent to me by Providence and played his part with a grace and charm quite rare among the philanthropists of art." Paul Jackson. 1 page. Octavo, ca. 247 x 201 mm. In black ink. Debussy asks his publisher for an advance of 500 francs to facilitate the composition of his pantomime, La chevalier d'or: "Naturally I have great problems, complicated by my father's illness, and I shall like to have a little peace to compose my pantomime the best and quickest [way] possible."Creased at folds and slightly overall; very small stain to lower blank margin of recto.

REAL GHOST STORIES: A REVISED REPRINT OF THE CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR'S NUMBERS OF THE "REVIEW OF REVIEWS" 1891-2.

London: Grant Richards, 1897 - Octavo, pp. [i-iv] v-xiii [xiv] xv-xvi 1-334 [335-336: ads] + 16-page publisher's catalogue dated "Autumn, 1897" inserted at rear, original dark green cloth, front panel stamped in white, spine panel stamped in gold, all edges untrimmed. First "book" edition and first printing of this text. A revised text "with some necessary omissions" of two famous collections of "true" ghost stories and articles on psychic phenomena by a major nineteenth-century promoter and champion of Spiritualism. "The Christmas and New Year's numbers of the REVIEW OF REVIEWS, 1891-2, supplied a large number of REAL GHOST STORIES, under which title, indeed, they were reprinted in October, 1897. Many of us will remember how people at the time spoke of the REVIEW with bated breath: how it was hurried out of the sight of children, and read almost in secret by their elders with blanching cheeks and tingling nerves. I fear we may have become very sophisticated since these happy days." - Summers (ed), Victorian Ghost Stories, p. xxi. Mild spine lean to volume two, rubbing to spine ends, corner tips and. along bottom edges, small damp stain along lower fore-edge of front. cover of volume one, small damp stain at upper right front corner of. volume two and two fainter, small spots at upper fore-edge just below. the corner stain, a tight, very good copy that presents well overall.. First printing copies are rare. (#140642). First edition, first printing. The first printing, limited to 2000 copies. A mammoth and highly imaginative novel. Earth is conquered by the Martians who establish a protectorate thereby bringing reason and utopia to the planet. "In the mainstream, the undisputed pioneer of German SF was Kurd Lasswitz (1848- 1910). His AUF ZWEI PLANETEN (1897) is a classic of interplanetary fiction, remarkable not only for its striking anticipations of space travel, including space stations, but also for its attempt to give philosophical depth to a struggle between a technologically advanced humanoid Mars and an Earth fighting for independence and autonomy. The novel is not wholly successful -- Lasswitz was too didactic -- but is nevertheless a praiseworthy effort." - Rottensteiner, "German SF" in Anatomy of Wonder (1987), p. 383. AUF ZWEI PLANETEN "was neither his first book nor his only work of fiction, but it was the one that made him famous. It has been a permanent part of German literature since its first appearance in 1987. The Nazis banned it as 'democratic,' but it was re- issued in 1948 in celebration of the hundredth anniversary of Lasswitz' birth." - Ley, Rockets, Missiles, and Space Travel (1951), pp. 45-8. All but one post-World-War-II German-language edition and the only English- language edition are abridged. (The entire text is found in Rudi Schweikert's edition [Frankfurt: Verlag 2001, 1979], an edition now hard to find.) Anatomy of Wonder (1976) 2-103; (1981) 1-122; and (1987) 6-22 and (2004) II-634. Cloth dusty, tear in cloth near upper spine end, remnant of a small. paper label above the publisher's spine imprint, a couple of short. splits along inner front hinge, small circular stamp to front free. endpaper and half title page, closed tears at upper margin of. contents leaf and top edge of first leaf of text, a solid, good copy.. (#147944). First edition, second (or third) printing. Bibliographically, a complex book: this copy is part of the second printing (or third printing) which printed an advertisement for Stoker's THE SHOULDER OF SHASTA on page [392] -- this page is blank in all first printing copies. According to Dalby 10c, this is the "third issue of [the] first edition," but it is a later printing, not a later issue. The most famous and influential of all vampire novels. "Although it is based in part on the crude VARNEY, THE VAMPIRE and the superior 'Carmilla' by LeFanu, DRACULA remains the definitive treatment of the classical vampire, a work of great imagination and conviction. While it is generally conceded that it has technical weaknesses -- wooden characters, sentimental writing, needless complexity - - its virtues overweigh its flaws and it is one of the great classics of supernatural fiction." - Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 1546.         [THE DISCOURSES IN ENGLISH]

London: Arthur L. Humphreys, 1897. First Printing of this Edition n. Hardcover. 229 x 184 mm (9 x 7 1/4"). Two volumes. Reprinted from the Translation of George Long. First Printing of this Edition. PLEASING CONTEMPORARY OLIVE GREEN CRUSHED MOROCCO, GILT, BY JOSEPH BRETAULT (stamp-signed on front turn-in), covers with triple gilt fillet border, upper cover of both volumes with elaborate heraldic centerpiece containing the motto "Marte Et Arte" bannered beneath a Scottish lion rampant at top, and "Ard Choille" bannered below a crowned lion's head at bottom (the centerpiece also featuring a bee to the right, leeks at center, a flowered thistle to the left, and, at center, an opened book with "ET" on the left page and "AM" on the right); smooth spines with elongated panels formed by concentric fillets, top edges gilt, others untrimmed. A Large Paper Copy. Titles printed in red and black, woodcut initials. Spines uniformly sunned to a warm brown, boards with slight fading as well, otherwise A FINE COPY, the leather lustrous and with only trivial signs of use, and the text immaculate. This is a pleasing copy, with very ample margins, of an attractively produced English language edition of the discourses of Epictetus (55-135 A.D.), the text of which is known to us only through lecture transcriptions made by one of the philosopher's students. In the text, the author, who had himself experienced enslavement, teaches the path to inner tranquility (which he equates with the good life) in the face of all circumstances. Despite the profoundly serious nature of their content, these are informal, vigorous, warm, and witty remarks that reveal the warmth of their writer and that make a good read. The translation used here is by George Long (1800-79), who spent the years 1824-28 in the United States teaching Latin and Greek at the new University of Virginia, where he became a friend of Thomas Jefferson. He later taught classics at the Universities of London and Brighton. Joseph Bretault (1856-1903) was among the top rank of contemporary bookbinders. In its January 1903 review of the Bookbinder's Guild of California Exhibition in San Francisco, "The International Bookbinder" included among "the great binders of the day" the names of Cobden-Sanderson, Roger de Coverley, Bretault, Gruel, Durvand, Douglas Cockerell, and Otto Zahn. This book could well have been a wedding gift (even if the weighty contents might seem a rather dour dower), with the two families being represented by the initials at the center of the volumes' covers. The personages involved are uncertain; the symbolic bee of industry, the thistle of Scotland, and the leek of Wales give us vague clues. More promising are the "M," the crowned lion crest, and the "Ard Choille" motto, all of which would have fit a member of the MacGregor family from Edinburgh as bride or groom. Apart from content and provenance, this is a very attractive copy, one worthy of epicurean, rather than stoic appreciation.

        Book of Verses, A

1897. A Fine Late Nineteenth Century 'Exhibition' Binding by Zaehnsdorf[ZAEHNSDORF, binder]. HENLEY, William Ernest. A Book of Verses. London: David Nutt, 1897. Later edition (first published in 1888). Small octavo (6 9/16 x 4 1/16 inches; 167 x 104 mm.). [v-xvi], 175, [1, blank] pp. Title-page with etched vignette. Bound by Zaehnsdorf ca. 1897, stamp -signed on verso of front endpaper and with the Zaehnsdorf 'exhibition' stamp in blind on rear paste-down. Full red crushed levant morocco, covers with triple gilt-ruled border enclosing a symmetrical pattern of gilt flowers (twenty-eight on each cover), the flowers on stems with azured leaves and a delicate gilt-dotted element below each. Spine with five raised bands, decoratively tooled in gilt in a similar pattern, lettered in gilt in compartments, gilt board-edges, decorative gilt turn-ins, red silk liners and endleaves, all edges gilt. This beautiful little 'Exhibition' binding by Zaehnsdorf surounds a very nicely printed edition of verses, originally issued in 1888, by poet, playwright, essayist, and critic W.E. Henley (1849-1903). An admirer of both English and French Renaissance prose, Henley wrote poems in an elegant and complex style. As editor of the 'National Observer' from 1891-1894, he introduced to the public a group of soon-to-be-famous young writers, including Rudyard Kipling, H.G. Wells, and William Butler Yeats. The book contains four collections of poetry: In Hospital: Rhymes and Rythms; Life and Death (Echoes); and Bric-A-Brac. Henley's poem sequence ?"In Hospital?" sets the pattern for most of his subsequent work. Presenting a rather new idea for a series of poems, he attempts the unhackneyed in his treatment. The volume chronicles his hospital experience from his moment of entry to his exit, and he gives brief sketches of most of the other people in the hospital at that time. He begins with ?"Enter Patient,?" continues with ?"Waiting?" for the operation, then the ?"Operation?" itself, and with his other experiences until he is ?"Discharged.?" He also sketches the nurses, the surgeons, and various other people confined as patients. These poems are essentially topical, but in some instances his language is realistic and powerful enough to convey his themes with vividness. The probe used on him while he is waiting for the operation feels like a crowbar, and life he believes is a blunder. The nurses almost come alive, and ?"Kate the scrubber?" is magnificently portrayed in her macabre ballet performance before the patients.?"Bric-A-Brac,?" written between 1877 and 1888, continues to a certain extent Henley?'s experimentation in form and subject matter. Most of the works are entitled the ?"Ballade?" of one thing or another, as ?"Ballade of Youth and Age,?" and end with an ?"Envoy,?" but these efforts at archaism are generally unsuccessful. Far more noteworthy are such efforts at realism as ?"In Fisherrow.?" The sentiment in the poem is embarrassing rather than poignant, but the realistic picture of the ugly old woman selling fish is vividly presented. Fifty years old, she has a bronzed and shriveled face and neck; her feet are large, her legs bowed and spare and strong; and as she walks along imploring would-be purchasers to buy her fish she has the ?"spirit of traffic?" ever in her eye.

Das Internationale Schachturnier des Schaclubs Nurnberg im Juli - August 1896

Verlag von Veit & Co, Leipzig 1897 - iv+294pp with frontispiece, diagrams and tables. Octavo (8 1/4" x 5 3/4") bound in three quarter leather with marbled boards and gilt lettering to spine. (Linde-Niemeijeriana:5244) 1st edition. After the German Championship at Leipzig in 1894, the committee of the Nuremberg Chess Club, of which Tarrach was a member, had lobbied heavily to obtain the next championship in 1896. After St Petersburg in it seemed to Tarrasch that his home ground was a perfect setting for restoring him to chess supremacy, so the club set out to attract the best players available including the four contestants at St Petersburg. Interest was high and thirty-nine masters sent in their entries. Twenty were chosen, but at the last minute two of these - Berthold Englisch, the veteran German master, and Amos Burn, the English master - had to withdraw. But to the remaining eighteen, in order that every player might enjoy a day off, the committee, on the recommendation of Moroczy then entering his first master tournament, added the young Budapest player Rudolph Charousek, who, although he was not yet able to contend for a prize, certainly had his moments. Also among the contestants was the veteran Simon Winawer, who had submitted his entry at Hastings but had requested to be allowed to play under an assumed name? His request was denied, but one wonders if he was being hounded by creditors and what disguise he would have assumed to avoid them! Other additions to the field were the nominal U S Champion, Jackson W Schowalter and two German veterans, Schallopp and Porges. Of the absent only Burn was missed. A tournament misfortune was Teichmann's illness which ruined his chances in the early rounds. While he scored only two points in the first 16 rounds, he doubled that score in the last three! There was one other temporary fly in the ointment. Because of their great effort to make the championship tournament a success, the Nuremberg committee did not want to assume responsibility for holding the Hauptturnier and the other minor tournaments, which were customarily the adjunct to the biennial championships. This intramural squabble led to the angry departure of Max Lange and other leaders of the association to Eisenach, where they held a "rump" of minor tournaments. Condition: Exlibris from the Brooklyn Public library with stamps to head and heel page ends. Rebound in 3/4 leather with marbled boards. Archival repair to title page edge, else a very good copy.
