Amsterdam: N.p. c. 1897-8. Miniature (16mo) commercial stationer's notebook, 65pp. excluding blanks, 70 x 45mm. Original red roan. Reverse entries, and autograph pencil inscriptions: 'About 1898.....or earlier AC.', and 'E. Aleister Crowley fecit'. In another hand: 'Bought in Amsterdam?' and 'Very early MSS by A.C./Early MSS A.C.' Tail of spine chipped, traces of labels on both covers, pages browning. HOLOGRAPH UNPUBLISHED HOMOEROTIC VERSES BY ALEISTER CROWLEY, THE EARLIEST CROWLEY MANUSCRIPT KNOWN TO EXIST. This tiny notebook, used by Crowley when he was twenty-two years old, is the earliest of the author's manuscripts known to have survived. It consists of eight sonnets and six other poems, all but two of which are unpublished. Following Crowley's annotations, the contents read: Sonnets. E. Aleister Crowley fecit Love me or leave me Your love is light To pass through the pale streets I, who am dying for thy kiss He, who seduced me first A sailor's kiss is branded Did you speak truly? The old dark evening Rondels & Songs, &c. E. Aleister Crowley fecit The End -- rondel The Red Lips of the Octopus In Fur and Silk poem Xmas -- ballad Parody on above Song Of these poems, only three ever appeared in print: The Red Lips of the Octopus (published in The Winged Beetle [Privately printed,1910]); Xmas (published in differing versions in Oracles [Society for the Propagation of Religious Truth,1905]; Collected Works II [Society for the Propagation of Religious Truth, 1905-7]; and Amphora [Burns and Oates,1908]. The text, written in pencil, is faint, occasionally difficult to read, and in the case of one poem, illegible. The front leaves of the notebook contain the sonnets, and the back pages, as Crowley worked with the book the other way up, the remaining verses. All the sonnets, written in Crowley's undergraduate hand, are homosexual and masochistic in tone, and for the time unpublishably explicit. The sonnet sequence seems to address his love affair with Herbert Jerome Pollitt, conducted whilst the pair were up at Trinity College, Cambridge. Pollitt, in his guise of theatrical female impersonator, also answered to the name Dine de Rougy. Crowley arrived at Cambridge in 1895, the two met in October 1897, and the affair was over by the following year. How much the relationship meant to Crowley -- and how much it continued to mean throughout his life -- can be gauged from Crowley's decision to exclude this notebook from the otherwise wholesale destruction of his early poems noted in Oracles [Society for the Propagation of Religious Truth, 1905]. Crowley had made his way to Holland for the Christmas of 1897 after breaking up with Pollitt, but the couple spent the holiday writing each other letters by turn beseeching and flirtacious, and they were reconciled on New Year's Eve. The relationship was consummated that night, the act later codified in Crowley's The Book of the Law [Privately printed: The O.T.O./ Church of Thelema, 1938 [1942]]: 'Genesis Libri AL: 1897. Admitted to permanent office in the Temple, midnight, December 31, 1897.' This little books of poems, written during the painful final breakdown of the couple's relationship, is thought to be the earliest Crowley manuscript in existence. It pre-dates (and may go some way to explaining) Crowley's conversion to the loopiness of Golden Dawn mysticism the following year.

"L'Aurore" and "Piano Concerto in D minor" - Early Manuscript Sketchleaf

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Large and detailed early manuscript sketchleaf from the Romanian violinist and composer, whom Pablo Casals considered "one of the greatest geniuses of modern music."  Dated December 28, 1897, when Enesco was only sixteen, the leaf shows evidence of several works in progress: after writing the title, parts, key and time signatures for the first movement of his piano concerto in D minor (which was never finished), the young composer has turned the sheet and used the lines in the other direction to sketch a work for choir and orchestra, probably his 1898 cantata "L'Aurore."  The last forty-three measures of a movement in 9/8 time are written, with indications for choir, horns, and trombone, and further notes such as "immense buzzing in the orchestra," as well as a French text which deals with pastoral themes.  The movement ends with a fermata and double bar.  After this, Enesco has signed and written in French, "Composed entirely in the evening of December 28, 1897, from half past nine to half past twelve."  The young Romanian was studying in Paris at the time; in February 1898 he would present his first mature work, the Poema RomânÄ?.<br>On the verso, three further compositional sketch fragments likely from the Piano Concerto: one of 20 measures for a sparse piano texture in B minor; one of 16 measures (with the last 4 crossed out) of an orchestral reduction showing successive entrances of viola, cello, second violin, first violin, and flute and oboe; and one of 19 measures with one, two, and then three voices in 9/8 over an ostinato bass in A minor in 3/4.<br>One large horizontal crease with slight tears on each side; chipping and wear to the edges; otherwise a very legible manuscript in fine condition. 27 x 35 cm.<br>Enescu was born in the village of Liveni, today BotoÃ…?ani County. A child prodigy, he began experimenting with composing at an early age.  On 5 October 1888, at the age of seven, he became the youngest student ever admitted to the Vienna Conservatory, where he studied with Joseph Hellmesberger, Jr., Robert Fuchs, and Sigismund Bachrich. He was the second person ever admitted to this university by a dispensation of age, after only Fritz Kreisler (in 1882, also at the age of seven), and the first non-Austrian. Enescu then studied from 1895 to 1899 at the Conservatoire de Paris. André Gedalge said that he was "the only one [among his students] who truly had ideas and spirit."  Many of Enescu's works were influenced by Romanian folk music, his most popular compositions being the two Romanian Rhapsodies (1901â??2), the opera Å?dipe(1936), and the suites for orchestra. He also wrote five symphonies (two of them unfinished), a symphonic poem, Vox maris, and much chamber music.

Westminster: Archibald Constable and Company 1897, 1897. FIRST EDITION. Octavo. [i-vii], viii-ix, [1], 2-390, [1], blank; [1], advertisement for 'The Shoulder of Shasta; 16, catalogue. Original yellow cloth blocked in red, edges untrimmed. This copy comprises first edition sheets bound up slightly later with the 'The Shoulder of Shasta' advert and a 16-page catalogue inserted (dated 1898). The present copy's publisher list features an advert for Dracula to p.10 (importantly without its edition noted) and is entirely unopened/uncut. Other and later lists are noted, some promoting Dracula in '5th Edition'. The printing history of Dracula is complex; first issues (May 1897) are on thick paper and have no adverts at all; the second issue includes the 'Shasta' leaf; thinner text block copies follow, such as this, and contain an undated 16-page publisher's catalogue, of which later dated versions may include an advert for Dracula. There are no textual differences concerning the early printings. Our copy appears to be the fourth issue and is apparently an elusive one among dedicated Stoker collectors. Neat (and helpful) contemporary ink name dated 'April 1898'. Very clean internally, signs of respectful handling on the outside with a uniformly age-toned backstrip; A bright and pleasing copy in the original unsophisticated binding. A scarce Spring 1898 issue of one of the most important weird tales in the history of the weird, and one that enabled an entire generation of British male youth to witness Madeleine Smith without any clothes on, which is the kind of thing you remember all your life and which enables you to finally slip away into the great outer dark with less bitterness than might be supposed.

-cf. F.W.Hehrlein - "Paget's prediction ("Surgery of the heart has probably reached the limits set by nature to all surgery.) was shattered on September 9, 1896, by Ludwig Rehn of Franfort, Germany. Rehn was born in 1849. In 1870 he interrupted his university career, volunteered as a Hussar, and accompanied the German armies into France. Upon his return to Germany he obtained his doctorate at Marburg. During his liefetime he made many contributions to surgery, but his most famous was the first successful suture of a human heart wound." - "A man, aged 22, was stabbed with a knife in the fourth interspace, three fingerbreadths to the left of the sternal margin. After a period of unconsciousness, which lasted three hours, the patient revived sufficiently to take about 300 paces, when he fell to the ground. He was later found almost lifeless and was taken to the hospital. The first day following the injury the sensorium cleared, and the pulse became stronger and the dyspnea developed and the operation was performed. - An incision 14 cm long was made in the fourth left interspace and fifth rib was divided in the mammary line. The pleura was opened. Blood distended the pericardium and oozed from the stab wound which entered it. The pericardium was opened widely and the blood within it was removed. A wound 1.5 cm long was found in the right ventricle from which there was active bleeding. This was controlled by placing a finger over the wound, but difficulty was experienced in keeping the finger properly in place. There was lees bleeding during diastole than during systole. The wound was closed with three silk sutures placed during several diastolic phases. The pulse was immediately improved. After the blood was removed from the pleural and pericardial cavities an iodoform gauze drain was placed in each. - The patient recovered and was able to return to work." - "This marked the beginning of cardiac surgery; for the first time a surgeon had successfully operated on a living human heart." !         1895 Wisden Rebound Like Hardbacks , Special.

Hi and Welcome to our Store. We have sold many rare Wisdens through WisdenAuction so we are listing a few more spare early hardbacks and a full run of 1897-1948 in hardback, please enjoy them. -------------------------------------------------------------------- This is a very special 1895 Wisden, rebound by Wisden in the middle of the 20th Century to mimic an 1896 hardback, a quirky Wisden that will appeal to some. The similarities to a hardback are that the paste downs are yellow (with a Liverpool cricket club stamp) , the gilt on the covers and spine are identical to that of an 1896. It is slightly smaller by 1/8th inch , smoky top to page block and severe foxing around photo plate, the uniqueness is what will appeal. Hard to price up but Gorringes sold a similar copy (spine less like an 1896) for £750+20% and selling for less than we purchased it for. Please see the photographs, More Photos on request. Payment: Card, BACS or Cheque Please but paypal is OK.

Nate Salsbury, Buffalo Bill Cody's show manager, writes an angry business letter to George T. Beck, the Shoshone Irrigation Company field manager during the construction of the Cody Canal through the Big Horn Basin, referred to in this letter as "the ditch"

New York City, New York, April 13, 1897. 8.5" x 11". "Autograph Letter Signed ""Nate Salsbury,"" 1 page, 8.5"" x 11"". On ""Buffalo Bill's Wild West"" pictorial letterhead, Department of Publicity, New York City, April 13, 1897. Usual folds, Fine condition. To George T. Beck. In full, ""Col. Cody received the information that you intend to engage a typewriter again this summer. In our opinion such service is not necessary to the company's business and we refuse to have such an expense charged to the company's account. As we understand the matter, the work on the ditch was to commence on the first of April, and we learn from latest advices the work has not yet begun. This is a hardship for Col Cody as he has had his teams taken up to prepare them for the work and they are idle.""Nathan ""Nate"" Salsbury (1846-1902) was producer and manager of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. He joined the U. S. Army while still in his teens, first as a drummer boy and eventually as a soldier with the 89th Illinois Regiment of Infantry, fighting in Georgia, Tennessee, and Texas. After the war, he became an actor in various stock companies, appeared for a time with his own troupe, Salsbury's Troubadours, then retired from performing in 1887. Meanwhile, in 1883, Salsbury helped launch Buffalo Bill's Wild West, an outdoor extravaganza that dramatized frontier life, built around the personality of onetime soldier, scout and hunter William F. ""Buffalo Bill"" Cody. The show, a worldwide success, outlived Salsbury who died at age 56 on Christmas Eve, 1902.The Big Horn Basin irrigation venture became the Shoshone Irrigation Company, the principal vehicle through which Cody and several partners attempted to finance, construct, and operate the Cody Canal (referred to as ""the ditch"" by Salsbury in this letter) from 1896 to 1907 when the Company relinquished control of the project. George T. Beck (1856-1943), the recipient of these letters, was the company's field manager during the construction process. Salisbury was an investor and a Director of the company."

Theatre de la Renaissance. Sarah Bernhard't La Samaritaine.

Poster for Sarah Bernhardt's appearance in Rostand's play 'La Samaritaine' at the Theatre de la Renaissance'. Paris: Champenois 1897. Published in "Les Maitres de l'Affiche", 1899. Plate no. 166.. Les Maîtres de l'Affiche (The Masters of the Poster) refers to 256 colour lithographic plates used to create a very significant art publication during the Belle Époque in Paris, France. The collection, reproduced from the original works of ninety-seven artists in a smaller format, was put together by Jules Chéret, the father of poster art.By the 1890's the streets of French cities were enlivened by large, colourful posters. The poster had not only caught the fancy of the public, but its best examples were already being regarded as true works of art (specifically, as fine prints) to be exhibited, reviewed in journals, collected and reproduced in a more manageable form. In the last five years of the 19th century, Imprimerie Chaix was to play a great part in codifying, hallowing and perpetuating the ebullient spirit of the Belle Epoque. The renowned set of 256 prints were created by Imprimerie Chaix, forever to be known as a set as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche. Each print was rendered as a separate sheet measuring 11 x 15 inches. [27.9 x 38.1 cm]. The set was compiled in a unique way: Every month for 60 months - from December 1895 through November 1900 - subscribers received a wrapper containing four consecutively numbered prints. On 16 occasions (each of the five Decembers, each of the Junes, and the March and September of the final three years) the monthly wrapper also contained a bonus plate, not a poster reproduction but a specially created lithograph. The compilation of this set of original prints makes up the complete suite known as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche

BOOK OF THE THOUSAND NIGHTS AND A NIGHT. Translated from the Arabic by Captain Sir R.F. Burton. Reprinted from the original edition and edited by Leonard C. Smithers. Illustrated by a Series of Seventy-one Original Illustrations Reproduced From the Original Pictures in Oils Specially Painted by Albert Letchford

London H.S Nichols & Co. 1897 - 12 Volumes. This is the RARE full morocco, gilt extra, "Illustrated Library Edition" according to Penzer's designation (see p. 117-122 for a discussion of the various editions). With the 71 illustrations by Albert Letchford, including a portrait of Burton. Also issued with reproductions of the title-pages from the original Benares Kamashastra edition. Large 8vo, original full dark black levant morocco elaborately gilt with Arabic motifs in the panels of the spines, the covers with an intricate gilt all-over panel design featuring Arabic designs and calligraphy, t.e.g. A fine very beautiful set, spines perfectly restored, virtually without indication. IN THE RARE FULL DARK BLACK LEVANT MOROCCO GILT EXTRA BINDING. This edition conforms to the "Illustrated Library Edition" that Penzer describes. It was actually produced for the Grolier Society, though their name does not appear anywhere. It includes, as the title-page states, the seventy-one illustrations by Letchford, and was issued in four binding styles, this being the rarest and most elaborate: Style D, though in a black colour not known to the bibliographer. "For many years," Penzer mentions, "I thought that this full morocco issue never really appeared, but a copy was sold at Sotheby's in November 1920" (p. 121). Apparently he never saw a copy. Interestingly enough, the illustrations to "The Arabian Nights" were bound in and issued with the text for the first time by Nichols as here. Penzer describes those illustrations being first inserted within the "Library Edition," that English printing, modeled after the Benares Edition and to which he thus ascribes the name "Illustrated Library Edition." One conjectures that only a very small number, perhaps 25 or less of these fully bound and decorated sets might have been issued. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Eastburn Press, 165 Devonshire Street, Boston 1897 - Single sheet, 24 x 6 1/2 in. Lists approximately 60 stocks and about a dozen bonds and mortgages with number of shares and par value. In pencil is written perhaps the price they achieved and of note, American Bell Telephone Co. seemed to have achieved the highest bid against the par value. The panic of 1893 began what was called the Great Depression until it would cede that title to a later panic. It lasted until 1897. This broadside seems to show the beginning steps of recovery.
