Medinat HaYehudim. (Der Iudenstaat). [The Jewish State, An Attempt at a Modern Solution to the Jewish Question].

Warsaw Halter And Eisenstadt for Toshiah 1896 - Octavo (17 X 12.3 cm), title, i-iv, 5-82 pp., portrait of Herzl and post stamps to upper pastedown, stamps to endpapers and title page, post stamp to title page; censure's approval stamp on back of title page, in Russian, dated November 25, 1897, Warsaw. Contemporary quarter black cloth. First Hebrew edition of Herzl's manifesto leading to the creation of the Jewish State. Published the same year as the original German version, Der Judenstaat. "It was Herzl's book that really crystallized the idea of a national home for the Jews. Through his work, he transformed the Jewish people from a passive community into a positive political force. (.) That a Jewish State was created in Palestine within fifty years of his death was due to the vision and the practical methods of Herzl, expressed in his manifesto of 1896." (J. Carter, Printing and the Mind of Man). Der Judenstaat is considered to be the founding manifesto of political Zionism. In 1896, Der Judenstaat, Versuch einer Modernen Lösung der Judenfrage (The Jewish State, Proposal of a modern solution for the Jewish question) was published in Vienna by then 35-yearsold Theodor Herzl, a Hungarian journalist of Jewish descent. The previous year, Herzl had witnessed the Dreyfus affair in Paris and had been appalled at the outbreak of anti-Semitism that it had generated in the "birthplace of human rights". He came to the conclusion that the creation of an independent Jewish state during the 20th century would be the best way for Jews to escape European anti-Semitism. The title of the work originally read "Proposal of a modern solution for the Jewish question: Address to the Rothschilds", as Herzl planned to deliver it as a speech to the Rothschild family, but Baron Edmond de Rothschild rejected Herzl's plan, feeling that it threatened Jews in the diaspora; he also thought it would put his own settlements at risk. Herzl worked on his pamphlet from summer 1895 to winter 1896, but received little support from the publishers. Siegfried Cronbach (Berlin), publisher of a Jewish weekly, rejected the publication, objecting to its content, as did Duncker and Humblot (Leipzig), which had recently published Herzl's Palais Bourbon but insisted that they never produced anything on 'this question' (relating to the Jewish question). On 17 January 1896 the London Jewish Chronicle carried a synopsis of the pamphlet: 'A Solution of the Jewish Question' by Dr. Theodor Herzl. This led to a meeting with a fairly obscure publisher, Breitenstein. Herzl noted that he was enthusiastic about certain passages, and a definitive title, Der Judenstaat, was decided upon then and there. The precise terms of their co-operation are not known but later accounts show that Herzl received no royalties and that income from sales barely covered the publisher's costs. By February the proofs were ready but Herzl was clearly disappointed that only 3,000 copies were planned to be printed - Breitenstein did not expect a commercial success. On February 15th, 1896 a slim volume written by Herzl appeared in the shop window of M. Breitenstein's Verlags-Buchhandlung in Vienna, titled: Der Judenstaat. Versuch einer Modernen Lösung der Judenfrage. Der Judenstaat is Herzl's only work on which he used his academic title. Obviously, he wished to appear as a sober man of affairs, not a utopian. Reactions to Der Judenstaat were not long in corning. The well-to-do Jewish middle class of Vienna was aghast, as Hermann Bahr told Herzl at the time and Stefan Zweig recalled in his memoirs. The Neue Freie Presse kept silent, the liberal press rejected the scheme. Encouragement came from Zionist groups in Berlin and Sofia, and the Russian Hovevei Zion cautiously took note. Unreserved acclaim came from the Zionists on the margins of Viennese Jewish society. Their support catapulted Herzl to the leadership of the Zionist movement. This was the most significant, immediate result of the publication of Der Judenstaat. PMM, 381. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Eigenh. Brief mit U. Stargard, 20. I. 1896.

1896. 1 ½ SS. auf Doppelblatt. 4to.

[Piano-vocal score]

Milano: G. Ricordi & C. [PN 99000], 1896. First Edition, first issue. Very rare. Hopkinson 4A. Crawford p. 354. Schickling 67.E.1. Fuld p. 379 (2 copyright deposit copies, in Milan and at the Library of Congress, both of which are engraved. Fuld considers these not to be part of the first commercial edition to which the present copy belongs). No mention of the premiere on title page. All of the music to the final page is in Common time. Hopkinson records 6 copies of the first issue, three of which are copyright copies held in Rome, Milan, and at the Library of Congress. "The other copies in the Turin Conservatorio, the British Museum [the British Library] and the Bodleian Library are blindstamped 1896 but in each case the date of the month is unfortunately indecipherable. It certainly looks therefore as if the opera was first published at the end of January 1896 when the work was first performed." Hopkinson p. 14. The present copy of the first issue (unrecorded) would appear to be the only copy to have the decipherable numeral "1" (January) visible within the blindstamp, confirming the publication month as January. Dr. Luigi Scellingo is recorded as a surgeon in the Annvario del Ministero della Pubblica Istruzione, Rome 1902, p. 311. It is possible that he was the son of noted Roman doctor Mariano Scellingo (1844-1925). The date of the inscription is somewhat unclear, as Puccini appears to have incorporated a small caricature of a face (possibly a self-portrait as a moustache is clearly visible) as part of the date; the composer is known to have occasionally included "doodles" of a similar nature in various contexts such as autograph letters, etc. From documented letters, it is known that Puccini was in Rome between February 12th and 15th 1896. La Bohème had its Rome premiere on February 22nd of that year at the Teatro Argentina.. Quarto. Original publisher's dark brown flexible boards with highly decorative stamping gilt, decorative dark ivory endpapers printed in brown. Housed in a custom-made half dark red morocco clamshell box with rounded spine with rules and titling gilt, lined in dark red felt. 1f. (recto half-title, verso blank), 1f. (recto blank, verso reproduction bust-length photographic portrait of Puccini), 1f. (recto facsimile autograph inscription to Marchese Carlo Ginori-Liscii, verso blank), 1f. (recto note regarding scene 4, verso blank), 215-269, [i] (blank) pp. A presentation copy, with an autograph inscription signed in ink to surgeon Luigi Scellingo dated February 2 [18]96: "Al carrissimo amico dott. Luigi Scellingo ricardo G. Puccini Roma 1. [?2] 96." With small publisher's oval blindstamp to inner corners of first few leaves dated January 1896. Binding slightly worn, rubbed, and bumped; endpapers partially split at hinges. Minor foxing and soiling.

        Jeanne d'Arc.

William Wesley & Son, London 1896 - Three volumes complete. All 300 chromolithographed plates present. From the library of arborist, H B Nicholson (whose signature is found on all three front pastedowns). All three are bound in green with gilt titling. The boards are sound and secure. There is repair to the hinges by a previous owner about the volume. From the front pastedown has an atmospheric ex-libris plate (A J Ballantine). This volume has a facsimile of the original Vol. I - Part I published by William Wesley & Son, London and J C Juta & Co, Cape Town and Johannesburg, 1893 [August 15th]. Plates are separate. They are in colour and also black and white. All complete. The front pastedown has a similar ex-libris plate to Volume I. The early and later pages have age related marks and foxing. The contents are otherwise benign, patient, diligent and sure. The binding is occasionally weak. The spine also has a Dewey classification label. The titling is fresh. Volume III: Published William Wesley & Son, London, 1913 (posthumously). Edited by his daughter-in-law, Harriet Margaret Louisa. There are nine extra plates by his son, Frank Bolus. The boards are tidy with some light scuffing. The titling is bright. There is shelving wear to the spine. Within, the front pastedown has an identical ex-libris plate as the former volumes. The trims have storage marks. The plates (separate from the text) are mild, pretty, precise. The page borders have age related marks here and there. The plates are in colour and black and white. The early pages have flushes of foxing. In general the contents are agreeable, assured and appealing. Altogether the set - which is rare - is a contented one. fk [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Eigenh. Brief mit U. Rom, 6. XII. [1896].

1896. 3 SS. auf Doppelblatt. Kl.-8vo. November 1896 verstorbenen Rudolf Gf. Hoyos-Sprinzenstein war am 20. November in der Neuen Freien Presse erschienen (in Kopie beiliegend).

The Summary Jurisdiction (Married Women) Act, 1895.

London: Shaw & Sons,, 1896. Octavo. Original green cloth, title to spine and front cover gilt. Spine a little darkened and rubbed at ends. An excellent, fresh copy. First edition of this landmark in British legislation for the rights of women, protecting married women against physical abuse and neglect, and allowing custody of children to deserted wives. Consolidating the 1878 Matrimonial Causes Act and the 1886 Married Women (Maintenance in the Case of Desertion) Act, it extended the power of magistrates in cases where husbands wilfully neglected to maintain their wives and families, providing "the basic grounds for maintenance and separation orders that were in force until the 1960 Act introduced modifications (Smart, p. 31). Prior to this, "the law tacitly assumed that when she married a woman lost some of the right to bodily autonomy she had enjoyed when single... A married woman remained obliged to cohabit with her abusive husband unless she could afford to pay for a judicial separation from the Divorce Court. This, combined with the provision of a Divorce Act that a wife but not a husband could be divorced for adultery alone, constituted virtually a proprietary right by husbands in their wives' bodies (Shanley, p. 176). Uncommon, with 12 copies located on OCLC (five located in both the UK and US respectively).

        Moireseideneinband. Wohl München, um 1896.

1896. 177 x 113 mm.

The Alhambra; With An Introduction By Elizabeth Robins Pennell Illustrated With Drawings Of The Places Mentioned By Joseph Pennell

London - Macmillan, 1896 Book. Hardcover. Washington Irving's collection of essays, verbal sketches and tales, centred around the eponymous Alhambra Palace in Granada, the illustrated Pennel edition. The illustrations by Pennell are particularly admired. TheAlhambra has its origins in Irving's researches for his history A Chronicle of the Conquest of Granada. He raveled to Granada, where he managed to obtain access to the Alhambra palace from the governor. He was inspired by his stay there to write this work, which combines description, myth, and narrations of historical events, all the way up to the penisular wars and the earthquake in 1821. The book was first published in 1832 in the United States and England. It was highly influential, and this later limited edition is a testament to its enduring popularity. Condition: In the original cloth. Externally very smart with just a little fading to the spine. The free endpapers are a little foxed. The text block is untrimmed, and therefore the edges are a little dusty. Otherwise clean and bright throughout, and generallyfirmly bound. Overall: FINE.
