Gorgeous art binding by Pomey, with crimson onlay borders surrounding forest green morocco, with blindstamping of Art Nouveau floral decoration, and morocco borders surrounding WIlliam Morris-style floral repeat endpapers. Limited edition of 310 copies. 8vo. 23.5 by 15 cm. 117 pp. The decoration within by Ricketts is also very much in the Morris-style. Ricketts (1866-1931) was a versatile artist who achieved success in theater design in addition to book illustration and typography. He was a co-founder of The Dial with his life partner, and the two were in the true sense of the word, antiquarians who gloried in the artistry of the past over their present. Spine slightly darkened. Light rubbing along joint extremities. Pristine within.

Folio, [i], 202, [1, colophon] pp., color facsimile frontispiece heightened in gold, 39 photogravure plates of which 23 are full-page inserted plates, including one double-page spread and one facsimile letter printed on both sides, all with original captioned tissue guards, ornamental initials at the start of each chapter, and title page printed in black and red. Full red morocco with roll-tooled borders in gilt, gilt rules, and ornamental gilt-stamped "E" cornerpieces. Backstrip with five raised bands, gilt-tooled and lettered in compartments, top-edge gilt, gilt dentelles, and red marbled endpapers heightened in gold. Some stress to hinges and minor scuff marks pp. 1-5, another minor scuff mark to p. 85, lacks half-title, edges lightly foxed; very good. First edition of this sumptuously bound, finely illustrated history of the reign of Queen Elizabeth. Covers her youth, the problems early in her reign, her relationship with Mary Stuart, her excommunication, the Alençon marriage, the "crisis" and execution of Mary, the new England, and her final years. With a choice selection of photogravure reproductions of art, dwelling places and treasures belonging to the Queen, including portraits from throughout her life, portraits of Henry VIII, Princess Mary, Sir Walter Raleigh and his son, and Sir Phillip Sidney. Also included are reproductions of her cradle, her horse, her library, and her silk stockings and summer hat. Rev. Mandell Creighton (1843-1901) was the bishop of London and a historian. From his early years at Oxford he was praised for his scholarly literary compositions and intellectual prominence. At age 27 his was ordained as a deacon, and priested at age 30. In 1874 he left his position at Oxford for Embleton hoping to write a history of the papacy. From there he published the first two volumes of his most renown work the History of the Papacy, and many papers on figures from the Italian Renaissance to the English Historical Review, of which he was the editor for it's first five years. In 1884 he accepted a position at Cambridge as the first Dixie professor of ecclesiastical history. Shortly after, in 1885 he was appointed a canon of Worcester Cathedral where he contributed actively until appointed as a bishop of Peterborough in 1891. Despite being a man of his time, with high standards of behavior, sober and deliberate use of his time, he was considered approachable, and humorous, inspiring affection among those he knew. He was enthroned as bishop of London in 1897, and focused attention during these final years of his life on theological training and record conservation. Despite the rapid and drastic changes facing England during his time, Creighton managed to contribute reliable and clear-sighted historical studies, including his history of the reign of Queen Elizabeth.

Die Goldverzierungen kräftig. Der Buchschnitt ist hervorragend erhalten, ohne Flecke oder Anschmutzungen. Der Einband nur wenig berieben, Buchecken nur etwas bestoßen. Auch die Buchdeckel sind beeindruckend: die bei dieser Ausgabe typischen Abplatzungen am Übergang zum Leder finden sich bei lediglich zehn Bänden (und auch dort sind sie unauffällig). Innen setzt sich dieser sehr gute Erhaltungszustand fort. Bindung fest, kein unangenehmer Geruch. Seiten sauber, keine Anstreichungen oder Fleckigkeit. Karten & Abbildungen einwandfrei, die schützenden Seidenpapiere liegen noch bei. Ganz offensichtlich wurde in den Bänden kaum nachgeschlagen, manche Seiten hängen am Buchschnitt noch aneinander. Broadside, 350 x 200 mm,printed in blue ink on pink silk; a few small rust marks at right and lower left edges, else in very good condition; framed. Pollard's Lilliputian Opera Company was formed in Launceston in 1881 by James Joseph Pollard and his wife, Corunna. The company later moved to Melbourne, where it recruited many of its child stars, mostly girls. Between the 1880s and 1910, when it was disbanded in New Zealand, this hard-working and successful company toured Australasia, Japan, China, India, South Africa, the United States and Canada, performing up to six different musical comedies a week in most locations. The cast listed on the present broadside, which was printed for a special Calcutta performance during the Pollards' visit to India in 1896-97, includes family members Connie, Ina, Annie and Master James Pollard; it also records N. Pollard as costume designer and Mr. C.A. Pollard as conductor and manager.

This copy was presented to William Christie, Astronomer Royal from 1881 to 1910 from Rajendra Nayayan Rai Bahadur with a presentation slip, dated 1896 tipped in on the title page. Under Christie the Royal Observatory at Greenwich not only continued its work in positional astronomy but also began a programme of stellar photography and one of making daily records of solar activity. The Observatory also took part in a number of international collaborative projects such as the Astrographic Chart and Carte du Ciel project of mapping the entire sky in both catalogue and photographic form. Eighteen Observatories were involved in this project from all over the world. Christie was also responsible for a number of additions to the Observatory which included purchasing the 28" telescope still in working order today.         In Haunts of Wild Game - A Hunter-Naturalist's Wanderings from Kahlamba to Libombo

      William Blackwood and Sons, Edinburgh and London, 1896. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 576 pages (complete). A very clubbable book. This is a classic of the hey-days of gentlemen sportsmen hunters. Frederick Vaughan Kirby was known as an excellent rifleman and hunting with breach loading black powder rifles. As with many dedicated hunters he was a keen conservationist. He later became the Chief Conservation Officer for Zululand and was instrumental in the signing of the Mkhuzi Game Reserve. The smooth cloth cover is cheerfully worn at the edges. The cover is attractive, the illustration of a crouching leopard is clear and thrilling. There is wear to the edges, corners and the head and foot of the spine. The covers and the spine are firm, muscular and healthy. The faces are lightly scuffed and are marked from handling and shelving. Inside, there is an ex-libris plate showing previous ownership by Cicely H Massy, the youngest daughter of Robert Ellis Cunliffe (of the Liverpool baronetcy family) whose family arms appear. Cicely married an officer and lived about the Empire. She died in Cape Town. The folded map of Kahlamba and Libombo at the back of the book is torn about the edge but the closed tear is along the blank edge. All plates are present. Waxed protective sheets are smart and clean. The pages are genial, companionable, clean, clear, creamy, sure, certain, robust, in places as if new, confident, compelling. A lovely book. fk

        Tristan Tzara with monocle

      Lithograph, 370 x 160 mm, signed in pencil lower right. The play Le coeur à gaz by famed Romanian-born dadaist writer Tristan Tzara (1896 - 1963) was first performed in Paris, as part of the 1921 "Dada Salon" at the Galerie Montaigne. For it's second performance in 1923 at théâtre Michel, the costumes were designed by the artist Sonia Delaunay, the original watercolour designs now being held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 1977, Paris gallerist Jaques Damase published a limited edition of the play, a livre d'artiste limited to 125 copies illustrated with 12 original lithographs by Delaunay, 7 of which reproduce her original costume designs. The lithographs in the edition were unsigned, but for a special collector's edition of 25 copies, a suite of 7 signed lithographs accompanied the work, including this striking modernist portrait of Tzara with his ubiquitous monocle. A striking work published late in Delaunay's career, directly referencing the stunning avant-garde pieces created in Paris in the 1920s.

Original printed wrappers bound in.l Very rare monograph on tobacco plants and cultivation, in particular in Portugal, by the Portuguese botanist, phytopathologist and mycologist Manoel de Sousa da Camara (1871-1955), also spelled Manuel de Souza da Câmara. The whole work is printed in a fine script letter, which is highly unusual. Inscribed by the author on dedication leaf verso. Two old bookplates on the front wrapper verso. Loosely enclosed, the original linen spine, with remnants of original paper label reading "Chaucer's Works"; bookplate of Jean Hersholt, with his signature. A fine copy, housed in a custom morocco and buckram case. 'The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer published in 1896 by the Kelmscott Press was the culmination of William Morris's vision for an ideal book. It embodied his love of medieval literature and art, as well as his love of beauty. Its vast scope and magnificence inspired his friend and collaborator Edward Burne-Jones to compare it to a "pocket cathedral." William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones discovered and developed a love for Chaucer as undergraduates at Oxford University. After Morris established the Kelmscott Press in 1891, the two old friends agreed that The Canterbury Tales and other works by Chaucer would be a major goal for the enterprise. Morris spent four years working on the book. Trial pages were printed in 1892, while final production began on August 8, 1894. The first two copies of the book were delivered to Morris and Burne-Jones on June 2, 1896. Morris was already in failing health; he died four months later on October 3, 1896.'         Myself, Conant, and the girl who fell in love with him, and whom he ran away from.

      Ink and wash on paper, 330 x 310 mm (image), signed lower right and titled lower centre, a few small spots else fine, framed. A fine character study by Norman Lindsay of Hugh Conant, the 'Great Lover'. It illustrates a scene set in 1896, although the work was probably executed later. Lindsay's good friend and former housemate Hugh Conant is the subject of a lady's affections. She is well-presented and attractive, a fact which distinctly unnerves Conant as he stands peculiarly with his back to her. Avoiding the lady's eye, he mispours a glass of red wine, which spills over the edge of the table. Norman and his own lady companion sit awkwardly on either side of the mismatched couple, the lady with a cigarette between her fingers and Norman with his hands tensely placed on his knees. They both look quite uncomfortable. The scene is almost certainly set within Conant's residence, as he acts the part of the host with a limited level of skill. The small group of framed portraits hanging on the wall behind the group (signed to himself by famous actresses, but in Conant's hand) reflect Norman Lindsay's description of his room in his autobiography My mask (Sydney : Angus & Robertson, 1970, p.102). Norman Lindsay moved to Melbourne from Creswick in 1896 and enrolled in drawing classes at the National Gallery School at the age of sixteen while ghosting illustrations for his older brother Lionel in The Hawklet. Norman met Hugh Conant around this time, and along with a mutual friend, De Burier, the three rented a cheap terrace house in the slum area of Little Fitzroy Street where they stayed for a period of twelve months in 1896. Living in this 'human hutch' and situated between a rabbit-hawker and a slum-brothel, Norman wrote: 'I owe it to Little Fitzroy Street that it rid me for ever from any mushy sentiment over the suffering poor ...' (My mask, 1970, p.97). Lindsay described Conant as 'a romantic fantasy-monger ... fantasy was the essence of Contant's being'. He describes his pomposity and inflated ego, his unending stream of bad poetry and exaggerated stories about famous acquaintances and escapades with beautiful women, none of which Norman saw any evidence of, on account of which he took to ironically referring to Conant as the 'Great Lover'. Norman moved to Charterisville near Heidelberg in late 1897 with his brother Lionel, who taught him the art of etching. It was for his friend Hugh Conant that Lindsay created his first bookplate in the same year. Conant moved to Sydney, and the two lost contact for several years. Lindsay would later base the character of Cuthbert Bunson, the 'celebrated poet' inA Curate in Bohemia (1913), on Hugh Conant. All of Lindsay's characters in this novel were pastiches of real acquaintances but, unlike all the other subjects, Conant was furious with the caricature. When Lindsay next saw him a few years later 'his greeting to me, with a ferocious scowl, was "You bastard!"'. In this unusual painted scene, Norman Lindsay illustrates perfectly the character he later described in words in My mask. Conant was clearly a meaningful influence in Lindsay's life, the outrageous character from his youth unforgettable to him, even as an elderly man.

Boards have some damage, but in good enough condition to be worth saving. Pages have been professionally repaired. All original pages intact. Fly page has a name plate that reads "Benj. Frenkel, M.D.". Frenkel was born in Galveston, TX in 1877. He was a student from 1893-1896, then Apothecary, U.S.N. 1898; Hospital Steward, 1899; Senior Medical Officer on U.S.S. Hornet during Spanish-American War; Acting Assistant Surgeon, U.S. Naval Hospital , San Juan Porto Rico, 1899-1900. He eventually became a prosperous surgeon in New York City, but was arrested several times for drug charges. In May, 1919 he was arrested for illegal possession of morphine. In September 1927, he died in the prison ward of Bellevue Hospital of cerebral hemorrhage. Fly page also has a gift inscription addressed to Dr. Quinn on the back of a Drs. Danforth & Quinn office slip. Dr. Clarence Quinn, from Texas City, Texas, made a direct impact in the city's history beginning as a child when he was a member of the first Boy Scout Troop in Texas. It was Scouting that piqued his interest in medicine. He was only one of three doctors in Texas City before becoming a Captain in the Army during World War II. He resumed his duties as Texas City Health Officer after his service which found him directing and participating in the aftermath of the infamous Texas City Explosion in 1947. There is extensive documentation on his participation in the aftermath. This disaster caused him to partner with another local doctor to build Texas City's first hospital. He practiced medicine in his hometown until his death more than 50 years ago.

A VERY SPECIAL COPY, WITH PROVENANCE, OF THE FIRST EDITION AND A HANDSOME COPY OF WHAT IS CONSIDERED TO BE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PRINTED BOOK IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE. The Kelmscott Chaucer is "the most famous book of the modern private press movement, and the culmination of William Morris's endeavor" (The Artist and the Book). "[F]rom first appearance, the Chaucer gained a name as the finest book since Gutenberg. It has held its place near the head of the polls ever since... The terms which critics used in the eighteen-nineties to welcome it simply show us what an impression Morris's printing made upon late Victorian bookmen" (Colin Franklin, The Private Presses, p. 43). Evidence of the esteem in which the book has been held lies in the fact that after the Second World War, during the rebuilding of Japan and its libraries, a copy of the Kelmscott Chaucer was the first book presented to the Japanese people by the British Government on behalf of the English nation. The Kelmscott Press produced forty-eight books in its brief life. Morris had toyed with the idea of a Shakespeare in three folio volumes; a suggestion for a King James version of the Bible was in his pending file; and preliminary work had begun on editions of Froissart and Malory, both of which would have formed a triumvirate with the Chaucer. But on October 3, 1896, Morris died, and for all intents and purposes the Kelmscott Press died with him, the Froissart and Malory unfinished. The Chaucer, regretfully, remained the only "titan" among Kelmscott books. Morris dedicated his life to poetry and the decorative arts, but he did not exhibit an active interest in the design and production of books until he was fifty-five years old. He died eight years later, but in that brief fragment of time he established a standard and prestige that still make him one of the most powerful and pervasive influences in book design in the English-speaking, English-reading world. This is George Abrams' copy, with his bookplate on the front pastedown. Mr. Abrams and his company, Alphabets Inc., worked with many of the largest advertising and printing agencies. Among his type designs are three known as Abrams Venetian, Abrams Augereau and Abrams Caslon. He created the cover logos for a number of popular magazines, notably the original one for Sports Illustrated in 1954. Others he designed included those for Newsweek (1968), The Saturday Evening Post (1965) and House Beautiful (1949). He was a bibliophile with a large collection of rare books and manuscripts, ranging from incunabula to the Russian avant-garde. He was active in the Grolier Club and the New York Typophiles, and was a fellow of the Pierpont Morgan Library and an honorary fellow of the London Society of Typographic Design. His brother was Harry N. Abrams, founder of the art books publisher by that name. There is earlier provenance of Robert Heysham Sayre, who was vice president and chief engineer of the Lehigh Valley Railroad. He was also vice president and general manager of Bethlehem Iron Company, precursor of Bethlehem Steel Corporation. The town of Sayre, Pennsylvania is named in his honor.

L'Ermitage parvient à se détacher d'autres revues importantes de l'époque comme le Mercure de France ou la Revue blanche car elle se revendique éclectique et apolitique ; sur sa couverture, on peut d'ailleurs lire que c'est "la seule Revue qui ne s'occupe ni de politique ni de sociologie [mais] qui traite uniquement de littérature et d'art." Ses petites illustrations sont de style art nouveau, et, fidèle à son état d'esprit symboliste, ses collaborateurs s'intéressent davantage à la poésie qu'au roman. Tiphaine Samoyault, critique littéraire française, estime que l'Ermitage exprime une transition à cheval sur l'esthétisme fin de siècle et la poésie d'avant-garde des années 1910.

A lovely copy of this classic, illustrated by one of the greatest book artists of the day.

First published in English one year after the 1713 French first edition, the Memoirs of Count Grammont is a fascinating account of the court of Charles II during 1662-4; "it is written with such brilliancy and vivacity that it must always rank as a classic" (DNB). Gibbon called it "the delight of every man and woman of taste." FINELY EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED: Alongside portraits of Dukes and Earls are those of Cardinal Richelieu and Charles II. A gorgeous copy.

From the library of arborist, H B Nicholson (whose signature is found on all three front pastedowns). All three are bound in green with gilt titling. The boards are sound and secure. The three books have clear plastic protective covers (neat). Volume 1: The boards are mildly scuffed. The spine has a Dewey classification label. The book has aging and foxing throughout. There is repair to the hinges by a previous owner about the volume. From the front pastedown has an atmospheric ex-libris plate (A J Ballantine). This volume has a facsimile of the original Vol. I - Part I published by William Wesley & Son, London and J C Juta & Co, Cape Town and Johannesburg, 1893 [August 15th]. The plates are placid, pleasing and genteel. From tab. 22 to tab. 35 have storage marks. The pages are assured, firm, tidy and clear. Volume II: Published William Wesley & Son, London, 1911. Plates are separate. They are in colour and also black and white. All complete. The front pastedown has a similar ex-libris plate to Volume I. The early and later pages have age related marks and foxing. The contents are otherwise benign, patient, diligent and sure. The binding is occasionally weak. The spine also has a Dewey classification label. The titling is fresh. Volume III: Published William Wesley & Son, London, 1913 (posthumously). Edited by his daughter-in-law, Harriet Margaret Louisa. There are nine extra plates by his son, Frank Bolus. The boards are tidy with some light scuffing. The titling is bright. There is shelving wear to the spine. Within, the front pastedown has an identical ex-libris plate as the former volumes. The trims have storage marks. The plates (separate from the text) are mild, pretty, precise. The page borders have age related marks here and there. The plates are in colour and black and white. The early pages have flushes of foxing. In general the contents are agreeable, assured and appealing. Altogether the set - which is rare - is a contented one. fk

Ellis, the London publisher and scholar who was closely associated with William Morris, having published a number of Morris's own works, such as The Earthly Paradise and Völsung Saga. Both early fifteenth-century poems had originally been attributed to Chaucer. A beautiful book, with titles printed in red and two half-page floral initials, used first in the Kelmscott Chaucer. This is a very sharp, crisp copy in the original cloth-backed printed blue-gray boards. Bookplate of Pickford Waller on front pastedown. (Peterson A43).

Enlarged issue of a very rare series of engraved views of Danish castles, mansions, houses, gardens and city views, by the Danish landscape painter Johan Jacob Bruun (1715-1789). It was first published in 1761, containing 50 views of buildings on the Danish island Zealand, as the first volume of a planned series covering whole Denmark. The other volumes never appeared, but 10 additional views were already engraved (dated 1760-1762) and included in the present issue, with all plates on the same French paperstocks.With plate numbers in manuscript on the back of the plates and some occasional faint thumbing in the margins. Binding rubbed. Very good copy of a very rare series of views of Denmark.
