Original green cloth, titles to spine and front board in black, top edge green, other edges uncut, patterned endpapers. With the dust jacket. Neat gift inscription to half-title dated 1921. Prelims a little finger-marked. An excellent copy in a bright jacket with one tiny closed tear a few faint marks to the rear panel. First edition, first impression, of the author's third book. Ernest Rhys (1859–1946) gave up his job as an engineer in the coal industry to become a writer. He soon became a well-known figure on the London literary scene and founded the Rhymers' Club, which met in a room above Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese in Fleet Street. J. M. Dent's Everyman collection was his idea. He intended it to be "a collection of the great literatures, beginning with the English, so co-ordinated that if its readers began with one creative book, they would want another and another till the great public had the world literature within its grasp".

        Tolla

Paris - Fasquelle, 1896. Paris - Fasquelle, 1896 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Leatherbound volume with gilt title to the spine, marble paper covered boards, and engraved frontispiece. Edmond Franois Valentin About (14 February 1828 16 January 1885), was a French novelist, publicist and journalist. He made his name as an entertaining anti-clerical writer. The satirical Le roi des montagnes (The King of the Mountains, 1856) is the best-known of his novels. In Tolla (1855), About was charged with drawing too freely on an earlier Italian novel, Vittoria Savelli (1841). This aroused prejudice against him, and he was the object of numerous attacks. The Lettres d'un bon jeune homme, written to the Figaro under the signature of Valentin de Quevilly, provoked more animosities. During the next few years, he wrote novels, stories, a play (which failed), a book-pamphlet on the Roman question, many pamphlets on other subjects of the day, innumerable newspaper articles, some art criticisms, rejoinders to the attacks of his enemies, and popular manuals of political economy, L'A B C du travailleur (1868), Le progrs (1864). His more serious novels include Madelon (1863), L'Infme (1867), the three that form the trilogy of the Vieille Roche (1866), and Le roman d'un brave homme (1880) a kind of counterblast to the view of the French workman presented in Zola's Assommoir. He is best remembered as a farceur, for the books Le nez d'un notaire (1862); Le roi des montagnes (1856); L'homme l'oreille casse (1862); Trente et quarante (1858); Le cas de M. Gurin (1862). This volume bears the the bookplate of The Right Hon. Sir Ronald Charles Lindsay. He served as British Ambassador to the United States of America from 1929 to 1939. He was the son of Sir James Lindsay (26th Earl of Crawford) and Emily Lindsay. In 1909 he married Martha Cameron. Martha was the daughter of James Donald Cameron and Elizabeth Sherman Cameron. Martha died in 1918. In 1924 he married Elizabeth Sherman Hoyt , daughter of Colgate Hoyt. Condition: The binding is tight and firm with both covers and all pages securely attached. There is some wear to the extremities including slight creasing to the spine and heavy rubbing to the boards. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright with the occasional handling markand slight spotting to the first and final few pages. There is a bookplate to the front pastedown. Overall the volume is in very good condition..
