        LES VIES ENCLOSES. Poème.

1896 - Paris, Charpentier, 1896. NICE COPY. PICTURES AND MORE DETAILS ON REQUEST. [Attributes: First Edition]

An Introductory Treatise on the Lunar Theory.

      - Cambridge Univ Press 1896. Large octavo, very good in publisher's cloth (a touch worn at the tips); xvi,292pp and errata slip. First edition and quite scarce. It's a bit off the point but this extract from a letter on teaching by Professor W. Edwards Deming of New York University caught my attention: 'No luster of personality can atone for teaching error instead of truth. One of the finest teachers that I ever knew could hold 300 students spellbound, teaching what is wrong. The two poorest teachers that I ever had . were Professor Ernest Brown in mathematics at Yale and Sir Ronald Fisher at University College in London. Sir Ernest will be known for centuries for his work in lunar theory . People came from all over the world to listen to their impossible teaching, and to learn from them, and learn they did'.         All-Fellows

London: Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner and Co., Limited, 1896. London: Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner and Co., Limited,, 1896. Seven Legends of Lower Redemption. WIth insets in verse by Laurence Housman. Octavo. Original olive buckram, titles and decoration gilt to spine and front board, fore-edge and bottom edge untrimmed. Engraved frontispiece, decorated title page, and illustrated plates by Housman. Fading to spine and around board edges, nicks to tips, mild toning to endpapers, one plate loose, a very good copy. First edition, first impression. E. Nesbit's copy, inscribed to her by Housman on the first blank, "To [four-leaf clover drawing] (E Nesbit), from her entirely friendly LH. Dec: 10th 1896". This lovely presentation copy also bears Nesbit's bookplate, illustrated by Housman himself, attesting to their close friendship. Laurence Housman (1865-1959, brother of A. E. Housman) has been noted as a significant literary influence on Nesbit, since she often drew upon his imagination in developing plots - Nesbit's The Phoenix and the Carpet (1904), for example, is Housman's invention. This beautifully produced collection of Biblical and mythological retellings in verse and prose, engagingly illustrated, is a very early Housman work, published at the height of his career as a book illustrator and children's book author, though he would later turn his hand to a diverse range of projects, including novels, controversial plays, poetry, and political pamphlets. He, like Nesbit, was a committed socialist, as well as a pacifist and founding member of the Men's League for Woman's Suffrage. A lovely association.
