The Kelmscott Press, Hammersmith 1896 - ii, 554pp. Eighty-seven woodcut illustrations after Edward Burne-Jones with title, borders and initials designed by William Morris. The work encapsulates William Morris's intent to challenge all he thought wrong with the Industrial Revolution - the reduction of the individual craftsmanship of past times to a diminished, soulless template for the machine production of consumerism. Derived from exemplars of medieval manuscripts and early printed books, the works of the Kelmscott Press enshrined principles based on beauty and aesthetics - Morris's final challenge to a changing world.         Prairie Chickens

Charles Scribner's Sons, New York 1896 - A stunning hunting print from one of America's most celebrated sporting artists. Arthur Burdett Frost (1851-1928) is remembered as one of America's best-loved sporting artists. His evocative hunting and shooting prints capture the drama of the sport and provide an invaluable visual record of rural America. Frost was an incredibly successful artist, he illustrated more than ninety books and produced thousands of illustrations for Harper's Weekly, Scribner's and Life magazines. Although born in Philadelphia, he spent the majority of his working career in New Jersey where he produced some of his most noted work. Frost's most desirable and rarest prints are the twelve chromolithographs from the portfolio entitled Shooting Pictures , depicting various shooting scenes from upland shooting to waterfowling. The portfolio, with each image printed on a separate sheet and tipped onto a card backing board, was published by Charles Scribner's Sons in 1895. This dramatic image is a wonderful example from this famous series and demonstrates why Frost is considered one of America's most celebrated sporting artists. Cf. Henry M. Reed The A.B. Frost Book (1993) p. 90 (illustration) and p.158. Chromolithograph. In good condition. Sheet size: 12 3/4 x 20 inches.

FIRST EDITION OF FOUR PAPERS IN WHICH THE FRENCH ASTRONOMERS PUISEUX AND LOEWY DETAIL THE PIONEERING WORK THAT LEAD TO THEIR MAGNIFICENT LUNAR ATLAS, A WORK REGARDED AS 'THE ULTIMATE ACHIEVEMENT OF NINETEENTH-CENTURY ASTRONOMICAL PHOTOGRAPHY" (The Photobook: A History, Vol. I, p. 54). Note that these rare papers preceed in publication the atlas itself (which did not begin publication until 1896). In July of 1894 and in the first of these four papers, Puiseux, Loewy, and the French Academy of Sciences announced a massive "project aimed to make the first complete large-scale photographic atlas of the moon. Earlier attempts at photographing the moon had suffered from difficulties with the sensitivity of collodion emulsions and with atmospheric 'blurring'" (E. A. Whitaker, Mapping and Naming the Moon, 151). Puiseux and Loewy's efforts succeeded far beyond anyone's hopes and their results astounded both the scientific and artistic communities. The papers in these volumes detail not just the scientific work and instrumentation design that enabled their project, but also a comprehensive account of their observations on the surface of the moon. "Some of these papers are devoted principally to a description of the instrument and its adjustment, others to general remarks on the subject of lunar photography and the difficulties which must be overcome in order to realize the full capabilities of the apparatus at their command. An interesting point in this connection is the method which they use for getting rid of the motion of the image in declination, by choosing for exposure times when the Moon's motion in declination is neutralized by the change of parallax. The rate of the driving clock is controlled by the observer, without stopping the clock, by means of a sliding weight on the pendulum. In some places the authors give the conclusions to which they have been led, by a study of their photographs, as to the nature and probably origin of the characteristic features of the Moon's surface" (The Astrophysical Journal, Vol. 5, 52). Operating at the end of the 19th century, photographic printing techniques had improved enough that the next logical step for Puiseux and Loewy was to get achieve a magnification similar to that achieved by selenographers (existing photographic telescopes had a plate size of 2-3 inches). Toward this end, Loewy and Puiseux designed and used a 'novel' telescope with a plate size of 7 inches in diameter that could be enlarged 8-15 times. Over the duration of the project they took more than 6000 photographs. Weather restrictions meant they had 50-60 days a year that were clear enough to photograph, and of those sessions only four or five negatives would be good enough to use" (Whitaker). Loewy didn't live to see the project completed, but when the atlas was finally finished in 1910, it was described as a "scientific and aesthetic tour de force of lunar photography" and remains hearalded to this day (Thomas, Beauty of Another Order: Photography in Science). ALSO PRESENT IN VOL. 121,the first edition of an important paper ("Nouvelles propriétés des rayons cathodiques") in which the French physicist Jean Perrin proves unequivocally not just that cathode rays transport charge, but that "cathode rays consist of negatively charged matter moving with considerably velocity" (Magee, Source Book in Physics, 580). CONDITION & DETAILS: Two volumes. Paris: Gauthier-Villars, 1894 and1895, 4to. In Comptes Rendus Hebdomadaires des Seances de L'Academie des Sciences Vol. 119 and Vol. 121, pp. 130-135, pp. 254-259 and pp. pp. 6-12, pp. 79-85. Ex-libris bearing only a deaccessioned stamp on the back of the title page and slight ghosting at the spine where a spine level has been removed. Quarto (11 x 8 inches; 275 x 200mm). Bound in clean full blue cloth, gilt-lettered at the spine. Solidly and tightly bound. Clean and bright throughout.

[Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Single Hand-Colored Plate, the PSEUDONESTOR XANTHOPHYS From AVES HAWAIIENSES: The Birds of the Sandwich Islands

London: Taylor & Francis for R. H. Porter, Newman West Imprinter, 1896. From the first edition, the plate is accompanied by the original two pages of descriptive text. A beautifully produced hand coloured Lithograph by Frederick William Frowhawk of pair of Pseudonestor Xanthophys, the Maui Parrotbill, the most unusual of all Hawaiian finches and a species currently listed on the IUCN Red List as Critically Endangered. They are displayed among native foliage. Newman West was the Imprinter. Folio [325 x 260 mm], the lithograph is printed on heavy cream stock, accompanied by the text unbound. Beautifully preserved, the colours are bright and vivid, the paper clean and fresh. A SCARCE HAND-COLOURED LITHOGRAPH FROM ONE OF THE TWO GREATEST ORNITHOLOGICAL WORKS ON HAWAII. A beautiful publication, the plates for this work were produced over nearly a decade, containing magnificent hand-coloured lithographs of Hawaiian birds. The plates were drawn and lithographed by Frederick W. Frohawk, one of the leading English zoological artist and lepidopterist of his time. For backgrounds Frohawk drew upon the plates in Isabella Sincairs 1885 work, &#145;Indigenous Flowers of the Hawaiian Islands. The exact print run is unknown, but is believed to be roughly only 250 copies. <br> In 1887, with the support and encouragement of Alfred Newton (Professor of Zoology at Magdalene College in Cambridge), British ornithologist and explorer, Scott Barchard Wilson went to Hawaii to study and collect information on the local birds. Although scientific knowledge of some species have been obtained in 1778 by Captain James Cook, no serious ornithological exploration of the Islands has been taken place in over a century. On his return, Wilson, with the assistance of Arthur H. Evans, wrote Aves Hawaiienses. (Evans was a colleague of Professor Newton at Cambridge). The work became an instant success mainly due to the exquisite stunningly hand-colored plates, which were executed in fine detail. The plates show magnificent species such as the Hawaiian Honeycreeper, Palila, Alala, Mamo, Hawaiian Goose, Apapane, Amakihi, Moloka&#39;i and Maui Creeper, Akialoa, Maui & Kaua&#39;i Nukupu&#39;u, Kona Finch, Noio, Hawaiian Noddy, Moho, and many others. Hand-colored plates of the original edition were drawn and lithographed by renowned English zoological artist and lepidopterist, Frederick William Frohawk. Illustrations captioned with scientific names of each species. In the ensuing century, unfortunately half of the 64 species depicted in the work have become extinct or endangered.<br> This plate shows a pair of Maui Parrotbils, the most unusual of all the Hawaiian Finches of the Fringillidae family. The beautiful bright yellow and green feathers may seem typical enough, but this finch has a huge parrot-like hooked bill unlike any of the other Fringillidae. Rare in Wilson&#146;s time and even then only found in the highest forests of Haleakala. Today it is believed that their population could be as low as 250 mature individuals.

Pen Sketches of Los Angeles, California.

Elstner-Morehouse, Los Angeles: 1896 - 1 BEAUTIFUL COPY OF THIS VERY RARE LOS ANGELES SKETCHBOOK. With 36 full-page plates depicting early Los Angeles buildings. This unequaled record of the central Los Angeles business district, was created, according to the preface, in order " to show the active business portions, together with a few of the more pretentious of the office buildings and manufactories". Arthur Ellis was a founding member of the Zamorano Club. Provenance: Sam Behrendt, the son of Los Angeles pioneer Caspare Behrendt* (d.1913) (the discovery of gold brought him to California), "acquired his education in the Spring Street and Eighth Street Grammar Schools at Los Angeles, and after he was fifteen years old spent one year in a business college. For to years he clerked in a grocery and cigar business, and remained there until 1900. Selling out and returning to Los Angeles, he became connected with the San Gabriel Electric Company, later merged with the Pacific Light and Power Company. He was employed as a collector and later solicited new contracts for three years. On leaving that corporation, Mr. Behrendt entered the insurance business for himself, and in 1907 took in Mr. I. O. Levy as a partner under the name Behrendt-Levy Company, and they incorporated the business in 1908. This is a general insurance agency and the establishment now employs twenty-one people. Mr. Behrendt is also a director of the Union Bank and Trust Company and a director of the Shiff, Lang & Company." He is a member of Hollenbeck Lodge no. 119, a Scottish Rite Mason, and Shriner, Elk, Corona Parlor of the Native Sons of the Golden West, B&#146;nai Birth, Los Angeles Athletic Club, San Gabriel Country Club, City Club, Chamber of Commerce, Merchants and Manufacturers Association, and the Friars Club of New York. At Oakland, Ca., he married Sadie Mosbacher. Together they had a son George (b.1904). Behrendt was also known to be a friend of film star Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle, holding a dinner in his honor at the Alexandria Hotel February 12, 1917. &#150; McGroarty.         The Cruise of the Antarctic to the South Polar Regions.

London & New York: Edward Arnold. 1896 - Original blue cloth with silver pictorial cover. 8vo. 243pp. plus ads (4pp). Illustrated. Ex-Library. First edition. An account of the Norwegian Antarctic Expedition of 1894-95 led by Leonard Kristensen. Bull, a Melbourne resident, organized the voyage and served as its manager. This commercial enterprise in search of whaling grounds and seals was funded by the Norwegian whaler Svend Foyn. By late 1894 the ship had penetrated the pack ice and entered the Ross Sea. At Cape Adare a crew including Kristensen, Bull and Carstens Borchgrevink went ashore, becoming the first men to set foot on the continent. There are 12 plates in the book showing sealers at work, a portrait of Foyn, and many of the ship surrounded by icebergs. A good copy only with some heavily soiled pages and some edge-chipping. A stain runs along the top border of many of the book's pages. The library markings are an ink stamp on the title page and in the margins of the first 2 plates. The only other library mark is a small ink number on the copyright page. The title page has an ink library stamp above the imprint and a small ink number on the copyright page. The binding is good with some rubbing and wear to the covers. This copy has been rebacked with a new cloth spine and has new endpapers inside. Quite rare. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

1896 - Or, The Pearl of the Pacific. London: Sampson Low, Marston & Company, 1896. Original olive green cloth pictorially decorated in black, blue, white and gilt, beveled, all edges gilt. First British Edition (and first edition in English).~It is about an enormous ship built by the Yanks, that has a great city on it, and is navigated about the world, playing ducks and drakes with geography and the balance of political power in the South Seas, until finally the savages of the New Hebrides and the forces of Nature rise up and annihilate it. [from a contemporary review cited in T&M]~Part of the "floating island's" problem is that its people are divided into two adversarial groups, the Larboardites and the Starboardites.~This tale was advertised as SCREW ISLAND until its title was changed just before publication in October 1896 (the French title had been L'ILE A HELICE, or "Propeller Island"). The book was not published in America until November 1897, by W. L. Allison Company.~This is an attractive copy, just about fine, with scarcely any soil or wear. Taves & Michaluk V043; Myers 23.
