The Natives of Sarawak and British North Borneo

London: Truslove & Hanson, , 1896. Based chiefly on the MSS. of the late Hugh Brooke Low, Sarawak Government Service. With a Preface by Andrew Lang. 2 volumes, large octavo. Original green "crazed" cloth, blind panels to the boards, title gilt to upper board and spine, top edge gilt, chocolate brown surface-paper endpapers. Numerous illustrations, many of them full-page, one coloured, one folding, folding map at the rear of Volume I. The lightest of shelf-wear, hinges remain uncracked, a very good set indeed. First edition "limited to 700 for sale." In his introduction Roth explains the origins of this work; "Some years ago my friend, Prof. E. B. Tylor, FRS, placed in my hands a parcel of MSS, the writing of which was so fine and obliterated that I was obliged throughout to use a strong magnifying glass in order to be able to read it. The papers, which were largely written in pencil, were partly destroyed by moisture and by insects. These very incomplete MSS. were the posthumous papers of an eccentric young gentleman named Hugh Brooke Low, who, however, possessed a very intimate knowledge of the natives… He was the son of Mr. (now Sir) Hugh Low, Secretary to the Governor of Labuan… Hugh was born at Labuan on the 12th May, 1849… He was sent home at an early age and received his education partly in Germany, and partly in England… He failed to pass the examination for the Indian Civil Service in 1869, and accepted an appointment which was offered to him by the present Raja of Sarawak, Sir Charles Brooke, G.C.M.G. He died in London on the 12th July, 1887… During the eighteen years of his service under the Government of Sarawak, he was stationed principally on the Rejang river, which gave him great opportunities of studying the Dyak and Kayan races inhabiting the banks of this noble river, but he had also experience of many other parts of the territory of the Raja of Sarawak, and his death was much regretted by their Highnesses the Raja and Ranee of Sarawak and by all the native tribes with whom he had so long been in close contact." Roth himself had already published an ethnographical study on the peasantry of Russia and his "compassionate, encyclopaedic work" (DAB) The Aborigines of Tasmania. The Natives of Sarawak was considered the standard work well into the twentieth century and remains an important contribution, and an extremely handsome piece of turn-of-the-century book production.

Illustrations of Japanese Life, Vol. I & II (98 B&W Collotype Plates)

Kelly & Walsh, Tokyo 1896 - Collotype plates by K. Ogawa and by descriptions by S. Takashima, 8vo (7 1/8 x 10 in - 18 x 25.7 cm), 32 plates (Vol I) + 68 plates (Vol II), black and white collotypes on crepe paper, bound Japanese style and silk thread ties. Each plate has a title and generally a paragraph of descriptive information written by S. Takashima. While the image areas vary slightly, the norm is 6~7 x 4 1/2~5 in. This is one in a series of photographic album type books under this same title published by K. Ogawa. The four books with the same title, each containing 12 color collotype plates, are seen much more frequently than this set. The two books in this set have a volume number printed on the cover. This is not the case with the four 12 plate books. ~ Condition . I would rate the books as in Good condition. The covers of both books are in Poor condition. The covers of Vol I are complete but worn and stained. The crepe paper is rolling over at the edges and there are numerous tears and creases, primarily along the edges. The covers on Vol II are in Fair (bad) condition. The front cover is complete but has considerable staining, creasing and tears. Additionally, the crepe paper is rolling over at the edges. The back cover is in tatters with pieces missing. The preliminary blank pages of Vol II have water staining. Internally the books are in Good+ condition. The collotype plates are clean and free of problems in the image area. These two books are a good candidate for rebinding. ~~ More information, including a listing of all plates, available on request. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

The Trinity Hospital in Mile End; An Object Lesson in National History.

London Guild & School of Handcraft, Essex House 1896 - Quarto. 36pp. First edition. Illustrated with thirteen plates, several of which are fold-outs. The book was created in an attempt to prevent the demolition of the seventeenth-century Trinity Hospital; in the end, the campaign was successful, and the building was saved. Ashbee's text explains the historic and architectural significance of the building. The illustrations depict architectural details, and two of the plates have hand-colored illustrations of stained glass window designs. Others show a map of the grounds, an aerial view, elevation drawings, and depictions of statues. Charles Robert Ashbee, an architect, designer, and the founder of the Essex House Press, founded the Guild & School of Handcraft in 1888 in order to protect the status of craftsmen and to promote a high standard of work. This book demonstrates the attention to design, type, and detail that would characterize the work of the Essex House Press. Bound in tan wrappers with yapped edges, printed with Ashbee's flower insignia to the front cover. Edges of covers show some fraying, as usual, else a near fine copy of a fragile book. An early and uncommon work by Ashbee. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Poems. Third Series

Roberts Brothers, Boston 1896 - Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1896. Apparent second edition; Edited by Mabel Loomis Todd. Copyright page bears the designation "second edition", though this copy is otherwise identical to the first edition. This is the only such I've seen. 12mo, 200 pp., gilt decorated olive green cloth, beveled edges. Moderate wear to spine ends, corners a bit worn, darkening throughout spine, general light wear. Very Good, tightly bound and with bright cover gilt. Please see scan. Very scarce example of an exemplary collection of poems by Emily Dickinson, who, though she wrote somewhere between 1,200 and 1,800 poems in her life, disliked publicity so much that no more than ten of her poems were published during her life, and only three or four of those with her advance knowledge. The first collection of her poems to see print, Poems, was published in 1890, four years after her death in 1886. That was followed by Poems - Second Series [1890/91]and then in 1896 by this collection, Poems - Third series. Her fame grew later, and her name was not well-known until some forty years after her death. Nice, fine condition plate-block of four 8-cent Emily Dickinson stamps loose-laid within. The masterpiece of the Kelmscott Press. The work encapsulates William Morris's intent to challenge all he thought wrong with the Industrial Revolution - the reduction of the individual craftsmanship of past times to a diminished, soulless template for the machine production of consumerism. Derived from exemplars of medieval manuscripts and early printed books, the works of the Kelmscott Press enshrined principles based on beauty and aesthetics - Morris's final challenge to a changing world.

        Phantasmagoria

Macmillan & Co. 1896 - Phantasmagoria, by Lewis Carroll, was first published in 1869 by Macmillan and Co, London. This is the rare first state of the first edition of this book (with no mention of Alice on title page). PHANTASMAGORA is an organized set of poems published under both the titles Rhyme? and Reason? and Phantasmagoria. It is Lewis Carroll's longest poem. It is a narrative written in seven cantos between a ghost (a Phantom) and a man named Tibbets. Carroll portrays the ghost as not so different from human beings. Ghosts may gibber and jangle their chains, but they, like us, simply have a job to do. Their job is to haunt. And, of course, woven into all of this is Lewis Carroll’s great wit, his sense of intellectual challenge, and his charm. This book has a gold embossed cover illustration and gold embossed edges and spine on a blue background. The boards are in good to very good condition with the gilt still bright crisp and clear -- they really gleam in the sunlight. There is some normal shelf wear on the lower edges of teh boards. The spine gilt has faded just a bit but is still clear, and there is a bit of rubbing/scuffing on the spine, especially at the spine ends. There is also some splitting of the chocolate pastedown/first free end paper at the joint (see photo). The page edges are gilt and they, too, are still bright and crisp. Now the internal text itself: there are original author’s bookplates on the inside front and rear endpapers (which are made of heavy brown paper). And the half title page has some foxing. But once you reach the title page, the pages are in very good condition with no marks, creases, folds or other problems. So overall this is a very good first state of the first edition of Lewis Carroll’s Phantasmagoria – a copy that would make any Carroll fan proud to own. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

IN NEW SOUTH AFRICA: TRAVELS IN THE TRANSVAAL AND RHODESIA.

London Horace Cox 1896 - First Edition, A RARE SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR. Illustrated with twenty six plates throughout. 8vo, bound in the publisher’s original blue polished cloth, the upper cover printed and pictorially decorated in gilt, the spine lettered in gilt, beveled edges. viii, errata slip, 431 pp. A handsome, bright copy of this rare book. Light age mellowing, and very minimal wear, the textblock clean and tight, the presentation inscription in good order. RARE PRESENTATION COPY, SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR. The author spent a considerable amount of time during the years at the end of the 19th century in the South Africa that was torn between struggles by national powers and indigenous ones over the land south of the Zambesi. There was an intention here to push for an understanding, even a thorough combination between the Colonies and the Boer Republics towards a commercial as well as a political agreement that would move South Africa towards a progressive future. The author relates the issues bred over years of colonization and settlement and the situation presented by the conflict between settlers and various of the indigenous tribes or war making leaders. He also gives a description of the land and peoples and resources of the region in a manner especially pleasing to the lay reader or one who at the time would have been settled thousands and thousands of miles from the area in question and unknowing of the social and political realities shaped by the conflict between developed and undeveloped states. INSCRIBED PRESENTATION COPIES OF THIS BOOK ARE RARELY ENCOUNTERED. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
