Typed Letter Signed with two original sketches

New York 1896 - American architect and partner in the firm of McKim, Meade & White, the frontrunner among Beaux-Arts firms. He designed many structures for the rich and famous as well as several New York City landmarks. White was shot to death by millionaire Harry Kendall Thaw in 1906 at the age of 52. 1 page on "McKim, Meade & White" letterhead, 10.25 x 8 inches, New York City, March 9, 1896. Written to Melville E. Stone, Treasurer of the Eugene Field Monument Committee, in full: "In answer to your letter of March 26th. It will give me great pleasure to design the cover for the Monument Souvenir Edition of Eugene Field's of field flowers. Do I understand from you that the lettering of the cover will be as follows? Kindly advise me if you wish any change made." White then proceeds to draw two preliminary sketches of what he intended the binding and cover of the souvenir book edition to look like. Note: Melville E. Stone was the founder of the "Chicago Daily News" and had hired Eugene Field as a writer for that publication. Upon Field's death in 1895, Stone set forth a campaign whereby he raised thousands of dollars for the purpose of erecting an extravagant monument in his friend's memory, which was eventually be placed in the Chicago vicinity. The book "Field Flowers: Monument Edition" was released in 1896 and coincided with the inauguration of the campaign to raise funds for the eventual monument. Natural folds; staple holes near the upper left corner; several small inkblots near the date. Very good(-) condition. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Small Wars. Their Principles and Practice

London: HMSO, , 1896. Small octavo (186 × 117 mm) Contemporary black half skiver on matching pebble-grained cloth, title gilt to spine, gilt supralibros, edges sprinkled red. 12 plans on 8 sheets, 3 of them folding. A little rubbed, neatly rebacked with the original spine laid down, book plate of the Staff College, Camberley, to the front pastedown, their ink stamp to the front free endpaper, light toning, but a very good copy. First edition of the British Army's first text-book of counter insurgency. Callwell served in the Anglo-Transvaal War of 1881, and again in South Africa, 1899-1902, but his reputation is "as a skilled theorist and, predominantly, as a staff officer." He wrote on a range of subjects, mainly strategic and tactical, and was the series editor of the highly-rated "Campaigns and their Lessons" series for Constable, but this, his first published work issued by HMSO as an official manual, is perhaps his most influential. Examining British experiences in Asia and Africa, in campaigns including the Zulu War, the Sudan Expeditions, and frontier fighting in India, with a vignette on the French in Indochina, he draws lessons for conflicts "in all parts of the world where organised armies are struggling against opponents who will not meet them in the open field." (Introduction) Small Wars… "firmly established his reputation as the army's foremost expert on colonial warfare, and was also translated into French… It remained a standard textbook on the subject for the British army up to the Second World War and, in the view of several historians, established his credentials as the founding father of modern counter-insurgency." It was reprinted on numerous occasions, remaining in print as a facsimile, but this first edition, issued in a run of just 1,000 copies as a manual for the studious soldier is uncommon indeed.

To Miss Jessie Sharples. Jan 25, 96My Dear Child, your very delicious letter comes upon me in the midst of a long spell of difficult work which may keep me employed for some time, therefore I must ask you to look out for a reply & a little sketch some time in the future, & if you do not hear, --- well I shall always be glad of a reminder from such a quaint pen. Believe me. Yours very SincerelyLouis Wain"In 1895, the Wains moved from 16 Adrian Square to 7 Collingwood Terrace, part of Westgate Bay Avenue; Sir William [Ingram] named the terrace after his son Collingwood. Number 7 was a large corner house; later they moved to number 10, a smaller house further up the terrace, away from Margate. Louis Wain named both houses after the famous prizefighter (William Thompson 1811-1880, nicknamed Bendigo) whose reputation he so admired." (Dale, p.33)

[The Century Co.], [New York] 1896 - Original buff, wire-stitched self wrappers. A reissue of the 1894 Calendar, and perhaps even scarcer. At least, WorldCat locates only a single copy at the University of Texas, whereas it locates 14 copies of the 1894 Calendar. Auction records of the last twenty years seem to support this ratio. The inner blank margin of the penultimate leaf has been repaired, and the final two leaves have been archivally reattached.         The Golf Book Of East Lothian

Private, printed in Edinburgh by T. & A. Constable 1896 - "The author was the minister of Dirleton. An interesting man. He wasn't just a parsinomious East Lothian Meenister. He was a bit of a high-flyer, a considerable womaniser, and enjoyed intoxicating beverages. His womanising always included gifts of jewelry. This extravagance eventually ran him into bankruptcy. John Kerr collected all the information about the golf courses and the clubs of East Lothian, wonderful stuff about the personalities, the problems, the triumphs, the whole cameraderie of golf. By the time Kerr came on the scene, the game was very popular. Everyone was playing, not just the aristocracy. The club at Dirleton Castle was founded in 1854 by 'shopkeepers, working men and artisans'. In Kerr's time, there was a club at Prestonpans, where the power station now stands" – Archie Baird, 1985. In red, green, black and white. Sheet toned, old fold, some minor soiling, wrinkles and closed tears in margin, small loss from bottom margin not affecting image. Colors bold and bright. Very good plus. MacFall, Aubrey Beardsley, pp. 159-160; Lasner 103B . The Savoy was the creation of Leonard Smithers, who decided to create a magazine to rival The Yellow Book, from which Beardsley had just been expelled. Smithers had the foresight to select Arthur Symons, the poet and essayist, as literary editor and Beardsley as art editor. It was in the summer of 1895 that Symons visited Beardsley to discuss the idea of the new magazine and at their meeting they came up with the name and decided on the format. In Symons, Beardsley found the perfect working partner, "a thoroughly loyal man, a man of fine fibre in letters, he had far more than the ordinary cultured literary man's feeling for pictorial art" (MacFall). "It was to this dandified fantastic adventurer [Smithers] that Beardsley was wholly to owe the great opportunity of his life to achieve his supreme master-work" (MacFall). Beardsley had been suffering from ill health when he left The Yellow Book, but this new venture restored his vitality and enthusiasm. Beardsley adapted the design for this Poster, advertising the collected three-volume set of the magazine at one guinea, from the front cover design for the final issue (No. 8), which appeared in December, 1896

One of the enamelled mugs given out at the Coronation Celebrations (1868-1918, Tsar of Russia from 1894, assassinated after the revolution)]

1896 - on Khodynka field, enamelled in blue and red with gilt decoration, May As part of the coronation celebrations a huge festival was arranged to take place on Khodynka Field, just outside Moscow. There were to be musical and theatrical performances, a 'Royal appearance' and a magnificent gift to each visitor. The packages contained half a pound of hard sausage, bread rolls, sweets, nuts, gingerbread and an enamel mug gilded and decorated with the tsar's monogram, all wrapped up in a coloured handkerchief. The theatrical performances included "spectacles never seen before" and a circus programme featuring Durov's performing animals. The combination of all these attractions brought the crowds in droves. The feeling of the visitors is summed up by a workman Vasily Krasnov, "To wait until morning so as to come for ten o'clock, the time appointed for the distribution of gifts and commemorative mugs, seemed plain stupid to me. With so many people there'd be nothing left . Am I going to live to see another coronation . They said the mugs were very pretty and would last forever . a real marvel .". The authorities had chosen the most unsuitable venue in Khodynka field, surrounded with deep ditches, gullies and trenches, a training ground for troops. The weather was good and the people of Moscow decided to spend the night in the field, but, as ill luck would have it there was no moon and the field was completely dark. The people continued to arrive and stumbled and fell into the gullies, the immense crowd became more tightly packed until by the morning half a million people were jammed into the field with no exit and more were arriving all the time. The police and cossacks sent to 'maintain order' were wholly inadequate to avert the disaster and thousands were trampled to death and many more dreadfully injured. The official statistics stated that nearly 3000 people suffered and half of those died. The true numbers of casualties - people crippled, killed or psychologically traumatised - is incalculable. As the people continued to arrive in the morning they met the strings of carts carrying away the dead and injured. Nicholas was then faced with the question of whether to continue with the happy celebrations or to cancel them and have a day of mourning instead. With lamentable bad judgement he decided that as such a great mass of people had travelled to Moscow from all over the world for the celebration that he could not disappoint them, and so he ordered the programme to continue as planned. This tragedy cast a cloud on the new Tsar's reign which was never lifted and was certainly one of the first major causes of their ultimate overthrow. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A Handbook of Bandy, or Hockey on the Ice

London: Horace Cox. 1896. First. First edition. Gray cloth boards ruled in black and titled in gilt. 57,(3),(4 ads)pp. Frontispiece photograph, line drawings and diagrams throughout. Moderate soiling, else a very pleasing, near fine copy. While other books on winter sports discuss hockey and bandy, this is the very first book solely devoted to hockey. Inscribed on the front pastedown: "R.H. White from C.G. Tebbutt. Jan 1896." The sports ice hockey and bandy (which usually has larger teams, and rules that in some ways emulate soccer) were mostly synonymous at the time, although the game we are familiar with today evolved away from bandy to follow the Canadian rules. The Tebbutt family, Arnold, Neville, and Charles Goodman, all contributed to this book, although Arnold is given pride of place as author on the title-page. Of the three, C.G., who inscribed this copy, was probably the most influential: he introduced hockey into Sweden in 1894, and also organized the first international Bandy match, in 1891 between English and Dutch teams. A rare book, neither OCLC nor RLIN records a copy, and we have never seen another. .
