        The Country of Pointed Firs

Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin and Company, 1896. First edition of the author's masterpiece. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author in the year of publication, "For Dr. Bartol from Sarah O. Jewett - 25 December 1896." In the Blanchard biography of Jewett, Dr. Bartol is listed as a neighbor of Sarah Orne Jewett and Annie Fields in Manchester, Massachusetts. Bartol was an early transcendentalist and pastor of the West Church from 1837 to 1889 and was originally from Maine and was a Bowdoin classmate of Sarah's father. Willa Cather, ranked The Country of the Pointed Firs along with Huckleberry Finn and The Scarlet Letter as the American work of fiction most likely to be acknowledged by posterity as an immortal masterpiece. It memorializes the traditions, manners and dialect of Maine coast natives at the turn of the 20th century. In luminous evocations of their lives, Maine-born Jewett created startlingly real portraits of individual New Englanders, and a warm, humorous, and compassionate vision of New England character.

Ueber den Einfluss des atmosphärischen Kohlensäuregehalts auf die Temperatur der Erdoberfläche

Stockholm: P.A. Norstedt, 1896. First edition, offprint. A mint copy of the paper in which Arrhenius gave the first quantitative study of the ?'greenhouse effect?' and the relation of carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere to global warming. Arrhenius "developed a theory for the explanation of the glacial periods and other great climatic changes, based on the ability of carbon dioxide to absorb the infrared radiation emitted from the earth?'s surface. Although the theory was based on thorough calculations, it won no recognition from geologists" (DSB). Joseph Fourier proposed already in 1824 that gases in the atmosphere might increase the surface temperature of the Earth. It was however Arrhenius who investigated this quantitatively and worked out a relationship between CO2 levels and the earth?'s temperature. "He examines the importance of carbon dioxide in the earth?'s heat balance and concludes that a doubling of the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere would result in an average global temperature increase of about 6 Kelvin's, or 6°C. He publishes his results in the paper ?"On the Influence of Carbonic Acid in the Air upon the Temperature of the Ground?" (Parkinson, p.433). 8vo: 216 x 140 mm. Original printed wrappers, mint. Offprint from 'Bihang till K. Svenska Vet.Akad. Handlingar'. pp. 102.

The practical Application of economic Theories in the Factories of Alfred Dolge & Son

Dolgeville, N. Y.: [The Dolgeville Herald Publishing Co. Print],, 1896. Illustrating the feasibility of a labor insurance and pension system, and embracing extracts from the addresses of Mr. Alfred Dolge on subjects allied to social economy. Octavo (230 × 152 mm), 244 pages. Publisher's brown ribbed cloth, blindstamp border to covers, spine ruled and lettered gilt, floral patterned endpapers. Portrait frontispiece of Alfred Dolge, 8 plates and a large folding table. Spine ends and corners a little worn, rear inner hinge cracked but sound. Folding table torn on folds without loss and repaired. A very good copy. First edition of a scarce work giving an account of Alfred Dolge and his idealistic socialist projects. The son of a Leipzig piano manufacturer, his father a close friend of Wilhelm Liebknecht the founder of the German Socialist Party, Alfred grew up reading Marx, Ricardo, Smith and Mill. Having learned his father's profession, he first moved to the United States in 1865, eventually expanding his business into the manufacture of felt for pianos, piano hammers and sounding boards, with a large factory complex in Brockett's Bridge, New York, later renamed Dolgeville, employing as many as 2000 workers, many of them German immigrants. Inspired, no doubt, by his early economic and socialist readings, Dolge introduced a number of welfare programs, including profit-sharing, a pension scheme for employees and schools and exercise programs for the young. His outspoken views, possibly combined with a family dispute, led to his downfall in 1898, when he was branded a bankrupt and was forced to sell up at a substantial discount. Nonetheless his schemes for workers' rights and benefits were keenly inspected by several European governments.

Extremely rare Large Paper Copy comprising a wealth of new poems brought together and published by her brother just a little over a year after her passing. From W.M. Rossetti's eight-page preface to the book which presents nearly 300 hitherto unpubished poems: "My sister Christina Rossetti- beloved by me, admired, and I may say reverenced- died on 29 December 1894, aged 64. There was an immediate, a very wide, an an exceedingly strong outburst of eulogy of her in the public press, both as woman and as poetess; an outburst which must have fully convinced me- had I not known it already- that she is regarded as one of the truly important figures in British poetical literature of the nineteenth century... and as soon as the conditions admitted of it, I resolved to put into print any verses of hers which I could find, such as would sustain her poetical reputation... looked carefully through the materials which she had left behind her... and perceived that the amount of her unpublished verse was considerably in excess fo what I had surmised. Sunnin to spine and upper covers, browntoning to just front pastedown, else fine copy of an important and scarce Large Paper edition of Christina's poetry, with a fine provenance.

        Photos - Zanzibar

Zanzibar, East Africa, 1896. Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam, 1896-1897. Set of 9 original large photographs taken in Tanzania, 4 of which are panoramic views, and a rare photographs of a group of slaves. The lot includes six sepia snapshot photographs taken in 1896 with manuscript captions in German, and three black and white photographs with embedded caption of W. Shultz dated 1897, each on its own heavy cardstock mount. Photographs vary in size, the smallest measuring approximately 15 x 20 cm, and the largest composite panoramic fold-out 45,5 x 16,5 cm. Mounts measure approximately 24 x 35 cm. Chips and age-toning to mounts, otherwise in very good condition, nicely preserved. With detailed captions most probably penned by a German naval officer, six photographs of Zanzibar include two striking street views illustrating German and English commerce in an otherwise traditional setting, native quarters with thatched roof dwellings. The caption which describes a nostalgic seaport view mentions a German steamer, plantations on the harbour's outlining coasts, and the activities of the indigenous residents. A large panoramic seafront view of Stone Town shows the Sultan's palace and harem quarters, the House of Wonders with scaffolding supporting its tower after the 38-minute Anglo-Zanzibar War of 26 August 1896, and a pile of debris alongside of it from the bombardment. The officer also acquired three views of Dar es Salaam by German colonial photographer W. Schultz, including a large number of barefoot African slaves chained to one another and carrying large baskets on their heads, a large mission, and a street view at the intersection of 'Baharasta' and 'Indier'. [At the time of these photographs Zanzibar was a British protectorate, and the principal port and trading center for the Germans. Tippu Tip's notorious slave trading activities being at a peak, by 1895 having acquired 7 plantations and 10,000 slaves.] Anglo-Zanzibar War: In August 1896, Britain and Zanzibar fought a 38-minute war, the shortest in recorded history, after Khalid bin Barghash had taken power after Hamid bin Thuwaini's death. The British had wanted Hamoud bin Mohammed to become Sultan, believing that he would be much easier to work with. The British gave Khalid an hour to vacate the Sultan's palace in Stone Town. Khalid failed to do so, and instead assembled an army of 2,800 men to fight the British. The British launched an attack on the palace and other locations around the city. Khalid retreated and later went into exile. Hamoud was then installed as Sultan. In 1873 slavery was abolished, at least officially, when Sir John Kirk, the first British Agent and Consul General of Zanzibar, threatened to blockade Zanzibar to coerce Sayyid Barghash ibn Sa?'id in signing a treaty which banned the highly lucrative slave trade by sea and promised protection for all liberated slaves. On 5 March, the Sultan passed a decree prohibiting the export of slaves from main land and closing of slave market at Zanzibar. Zanzibar slave market was to be closed within 24 hours. In 1875 Sayyid Barghash visited Queen Victoria in England, and in 1876 he proclaimed that conveyance of slaves by land was prohibited nor could slave caravans approach the coast from the interior. Riots broke out in Mombasa against the freed-slave work of the missions, and at Kilwa slave-traders hid 6,000 slaves near the coast. In 1876 the Sultan decreed that no slaves were to be transported overland. Kirk persuaded Barghash to raise an army, and in 1877 Lt. William Lloyd Mathews was appointed to drill the recruits. Slave-trading continued until the Sultan put the Governor of Kilwa in prison. Kirk estimated that during the 1870s about 10,000 slaves a year crossed the Juba River into Somaliland. As the slave trade declined, the export of rubber, cloves, and ivory greatly increased. In 1907 slavery was finally abolished entirely in Zanzibar and Pemba. . Very Good.

This proxy extending to all shares of stock standing in my name on the books of said company, except 1600 shares standing in my name, but heretofore sold to Charles H. Jones ... and for which I have given a proxy to the said Charles H. Jones. In witness whereof...? In 1878, Pulitzer had married Kate Davis, sister of William L. Davis. Charles H. Jones had been appointed editor of the ?St. Louis Post-Dispatch? by Pulitzer in 1895.Joseph Pulitzer founded the ?St. Louis Post-Dispatch? in 1878 and continued to own and publish it until his death. His eyes began to fail in the 1880s and by the end of the decade, at age 42, Joseph Pulitzer was virtually blind. Under his authorization, letters and documents requiring his signature were mostly signed by his secretaries. However, he personally signed proxies whose validity would have been challenged had a secretary signed his name. Autograph material authentically signed by Joseph Pulitzer has rarely appeared on the market. In fact, before this item became available, only one Pulitzer signed document or letter had appeared at a major public auction in at least the last 25 years."

Top-edge gilt. 335pps. Appleton's Town and Country Library No. 198. This item has recently been beautifully and professionally rebacked in gilt-tooled matching roan at The Currier Bindery; the corners, which had had slight wear, have been rebuilt. The binding is tight and square; both hinges are sound. The text is clean and bright; no previous ownership markings. In brief, a very nice and presentable collector's copy of Conrad's second book -- uncommon in the deluxe binding. ".Peter Willems, a clerk in Macassar, granted a 'second chance' at a remote river trading post, falls ever more hopelessly into traps set by himself and others. The pawn of Babalatchi -- the one-eyed schemer of power politics -- and of the rich Abdulla (who uses Willems to increase his own wealth), his fate is sealed by his lover, Aissa, and by Almayer, an embittered fellow countryman."       Crescent City, CA: Office of Crescent City, 1896. First edition. Hard Cover. Good +. 12mo. Original light grey stamped cloth with gilt title. Cloth rubbing, Front hinge started. Front endpaper chipped at corner. Rear endpaper missing. Overall all good, sound example. This 19th-century Northern California imprint is a long doggerel poem, but with one very interesting feature: it is the first mention in book form of the legend of the Big Foot (Sasquatch): "You have seen and heard the story, too, / Of how, upon Mount Siskiyou / Was seen an ape, or spook, or tramp / In region near the happy camp some years gone by— / That was of stature taller than / The ordinary height of man / Who fed on berries, roots and grouse, / And from whose eye / There gleamed the fierceness of the beast..." (37). The appendix reprints a newspaper account of the Bigfoot sighting, possibly the only place this account survives (we find no holdings anywhere). Only an 1884 Canadian newspaper account of Sasquatch precedes. According to census records, Musick (1844-1919) was a miner. Interestingly, his daughter Irene is listed as a printer. OCLC locates about 20 copies, almost all on the west coast, but rare in trade.
