A nice. copy of scarce book. (#95527). First edition. Collection of morbid studies, written under the shadow of Poe but distinctly fin de siecle in their sin-soaked diabolism. The after- death nightmare "When I Was Dead" is a minor masterpiece. Vincent O'Sullivan (1868-1940), American-born writer, long resident in Europe, was "a central figure of the English Decadent Movement, his early books of (mostly fantastic) verse -- POEMS (1896) and THE HOUSES OF SIN (1897) -- being among the movement's key documents, as was his first story collection, A BOOK OF BARGAINS (1896)." - Clute and Grant (eds), The Encyclopedia of Fantasy (1997), p. 738. The second, and scarcest, of Jane's four scientific romances. "An ancient Egyptian papyrus spells out the chemical means whereby an artificial girl can be made; the novel is basically a romance describing the life of the synthetic being who is thus created." - Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 122. "... the 'lost science' of ancient Egypt enables a female homunculus to be manufactured. The story is a romance, but the girl does function to some extent as an innocent observer, after the fashion of Wells's angel in THE WONDERFUL VISIT." - Stableford, Scientific Romance in Britain 1890- 1950, p. 130. "Overlong, with undeveloped themes and loose ends, but very imaginative and unusual." - Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 1178. Clareson, Science Fiction in America, 1870s-1930s 444.         A Handbook of Bandy, or Hockey on the Ice

London: Horace Cox. 1896. First. First edition. Gray cloth boards ruled in black and titled in gilt. 57,(3),(4 ads)pp. Frontispiece photograph, line drawings and diagrams throughout. Moderate soiling, else a very pleasing, near fine copy. While other books on winter sports discuss hockey and bandy, this is the very first book solely devoted to hockey. Inscribed on the front pastedown: "R.H. White from C.G. Tebbutt. Jan 1896." The sports ice hockey and bandy (which usually has larger teams, and rules that in some ways emulate soccer) were mostly synonymous at the time, although the game we are familiar with today evolved away from bandy to follow the Canadian rules. The Tebbutt family, Arnold, Neville, and Charles Goodman, all contributed to this book, although Arnold is given pride of place as author on the title-page. Of the three, C.G., who inscribed this copy, was probably the most influential: he introduced hockey into Sweden in 1894, and also organized the first international Bandy match, in 1891 between English and Dutch teams. A rare book, neither OCLC nor RLIN records a copy, and we have never seen another. .

Condition on this scarce circa 1896 photogravure print is fair., The Eagle of the French 45th Ligne captured by the Royal Scots Greys. Painting by Stanley Berkeley depicting the famous charge of the Scots Greys at Waterloo. The kilted figures carrying muskets are the 92nd Highlanders. According to legend, the men of the 92nd hung on to the stirrups of the Scots Greys during the charge. Although both regiments record it as part of their history, independent eyewitness accounts do not confirm the truth of the "stirrup charge".Stanley Berkeley (1855ñ1909) was an English painter of animal, sporting and historical subjects, especially military scenes. Born in London, he exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy, the Grafton Gallery, the New Watercolour Society, and elsewhere from 1878 until 1902, and many of his pictures were retrospective military scenes of the English Civil War and the Battle of Waterloo, such as For God and King: An Incident in the Civil War, and Gordons and Greys to the front: An Incident at Waterloo.         Walnut writing box presented to Rev. Thomas Ellis Jones.

      - by the Beryl St. Baptist Church, Broken Hill, NSW, December 1st 1896. Rev. Jones was a Welsh preacher from St. Asaph, North Wales. He preached at the Welsh Church, Bristol and in the Midlands before migrating to New Zealand, where he spent 5 years at Auckland & Timaru. During this time, he held the position of Grand Chaplain of New Zealand. Jones probably arrived in Broken Hill in 1893 and departed in 1896. One commendation is from the Silver Star L&C No. 2, Broken Hill. Another printed baptismal sermon was preached by E.J. Tuck at South Broken Hill 1893. Other paper items include 4 printed pamphlets; letter from Thomas Cook Ltd, Sydney 1900; mimeographed newsletter for Easter School for Ministers 1887-97; a number of newspaper clippings, a handsome receipt from Pianoforte Organ & Music Warehouse, Hunter St., Newcastle, 1899. The writing desk contains the preacher's correspondence, approximately 50 letters. The 1st correspondence from Australia dates from 1890 from Sandhurst, Victoria, and ends in 1900 with a letter from Grafton, NSW. Most of the letters are letters of commendation for the job Rev. Jones has done. In all, a fascinating collection of papers tracking the life of a travelling minister through S.E. Australia. Housed in a superb Victorian writing box w/ brass inlays, leather writing surface & a number of secret compartments [one of which was used to house these documents]. Fine Australian association piece. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

. 6 articles by Henri Becquerel, taken from the comptes rendus des sciences, 1896-1901. In recent old style blue stiff paper boards. Two title pages of the Comptes Rendus (for 1896 and 1899) bound in. A nice collection of some of the earliest papers on radio activity, the first paper published in the year Radioactivity was discovered, the others of the years immediately following that discovery. Henri Becquerel (1852-1909) first observed that rays emitted spontaneously from the disintegration of apparently solid substances. Soon afterwards he noted that certain uranium compounds emitted radiations after exposure to sunlight, and that these radiations could pass through plates of aliminium. A nice and important collection (the first title, for example, is listed in the Dictionary of scientific biography). Collection in good conditon, some slight unfiorm age toning of paper, two pages with a small marginal tear and some stamps. In recent blue hardcover paper boards with title vignette on front..
