        Studies of Western Life

New York: The Albertype Co.,, 1896. With descriptions by Granville Stuart. Oblong octavo. Original brown cloth, silver lettered on front cover, string ties, floral patterned endpapers. 12 leaves of plates. Neat ownership inscriptions at head of title page. An excellent copy. First published in 1890, this edition, with the copyright dated 1896, is apparently unrecorded in Copac and OCLC. An important work in the formation of the mythical status of the American West. Charles Marion Russell (1864-1926), known as "The Cowboy Artist" is, along with Frederick Remington, one of the great artists of the "Wild West". "The other significant event of 1890 [in Russell's life] was the publication of Studies of Western Life, an inspiration of Ben Roberts, a saddlemaker friend of Charlie's in Helena... Printed in Brooklyn and copyrighted by Roberts, Studies of Western Life was an attempt to cash in on Charlie's rising fame as the Cowboy Artist and the general public's steadily mounting interest in the Wild West [but] there is no evidence that Charlie ever made any money on the project" (John Taliaferro, Charles M. Russell: The Life and Times of America's Cowboy Artist, 2003, pp. 84-85). The descriptive letterpress is by another big figure of the West, the pioneer, cattleman and one-time vigilante Granville Stuart (1834-1918). Studies of Western Life is cited in the bibliography of Dee Brown's The American West (1994).

Autograph Letter Signed with original woodcut, in German, 4to, Zehlendorf-Mitte, Dec. 24, 1918

Feininger writes to Paul van Ostayen (1896-1926), Flemish avant-garde poet related to the Dada and Expressionist movements. who influenced modern literature in Belgium and the Netherlands. Towards the end of the First World War van Ostayen had gone to Berlin for political reasons, stayed for three years and befriended Feininger and other artists and literary figures. Feininger invites van Ostayen to join him and his wife on Boxing Day. "The five pictures have not arrived yet, but we mustn't wait for them in offer to be able to welcome you - Because of the pitiful state of transportation it is very uncertain now when they will arrive. We wish you a non too dreary Christmas...in the strange Big City! Only a very easy spirit would talk of 'Merry' now...." Feininger signs in full, "Lyonel Feininger." An original woodcut showing a church or cathedral in the upper left corner on this golden yellow sheet of onion skin paper. The woodcut is also suggestive of the Bauhaus 1919 Manifesto cover. The paper is fragile and tattered along right and left edges not affecting text. In the year prior to this letter of 1918, Feininger had his first solo exhibit at Sturm Gallery in Berlin. He was Walter Gropius' first faculty appointment at the Bauhaus in Germany which Gropius founded in 1919. Feininger became the master artist in charge of the printmaking workshop.

Autograph Note Signed "G. Bonvalot" to André Liesse, with the Original Envelope with Postal Stamps].

Lyon 1896 - Lyon, 20 February 1896. Octavo (ca. 18x11,5 cm). 1 p. Brown ink on watermarked laid paper with printed letterhead "Quai de la Charite, 3". With the original envelope inscribed by Bonvalot, with Lyon postal ink stamps. Both the letter and the envelope are mounted in a paper folder (ca. early 20th century) titled in ink "Bonvalot, explorateur français". Two newspaper clippings with Bonvalot's portraits are also mounted in the folder on the opposite side. The folder is worn at extremities, with a tear on the hinge, but the letter and the envelope are in very good condition. A short note by Pierre Gabriel Édouard Bonvalot, French explorer of Central Asia and Tibet. Bonvalot writes to André Liesse, a French Journalist and economist, thanking him for his "precious information" and asking about a forthcoming meeting with M. De Chambrice. By the time when this note was written Bonvalot had already become famous after his expeditions to Russian Central Asia in 1880-82 and 1886 (Pamir, Alai and Karakoram Mountains), and to Tibet in 1889-1890 when he crossed Asia from Chinese Turkestan to the French Indochina through the Tian Shan Mountains, the Tarim Basin, the Lop Nor and the Tibetan Plateau. The letter is supplemented with two newspaper clippings with the portraits of Bonvalot, one of which shows him with Prince Henri of Orléans (1867-1901) who accompanied Bonvalot during two of his travels to Central Asia.

Sketchbook of 19 pages of pencil and pen and ink sketches and captioned cartoons, all signed by initials S.B. and dated (January to April 1896)

London, 1896. 1 vols. 5-1/2 x 8 inches. Black pebble-grained cloth, slightly rubbed, faint waterstaining to topmost margin, else very good. Original Late Victorian Cartoon Sketchbook An amateur production, but quite a nice one. The artist, residing at 170 Loughboro Road, Brixton, was heavily influenced by the work of the great comic artist Phil May, and comes quite close to May's spirit and technique, particularly in his depiction of sandwich men with incongruous signs (an ugly man advertises "The Ladies Idol", a hungry one, a remedy for overeating.) Of particular interest is the drawing of an extremely nondescript woman standing in front of a St. James Theatre board advertising "A Woman of No Importance", Wilde's play having opened two years earlier. The drawings, most of them captioned cartoons in the style of Punch, deal with such subjects as music hall comics, Cockneys, female fashions, drunks, sport (a one-eyed, one-legged player is asked "I thought you'd given up football" and replies "I had to for a time, but I'm all right again now"), weddings, street accidents, children, and rich Americans ("I reckon I and the gals are just going to give this hyar London Season fits.")UNIQUE AND DELIGHTFUL.

The first edition is of legendary scarcity as it was reported that sales of the title sold just 257 copies before June 30, 1897. An excellent copy with some light fading to the front cloth. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box.Friedrich Nietzsche was one of the most revolutionary and subversive thinkers in Western philosophy, and Thus Spoke Zarathustra remains his most famous and influential work.

Lancaster's Mutiny and Custer's Reprieve. An Original 51 page typed Manuscript. TOGETHER WITH The first draft by Carroll along with photocopies of sources.

      - This is a brilliant collection, based upon the extremely rare pamphlet 'A Soldier's Souvenir: or The Terrible Experiences of Lieut. L. L. Lancaster, of the Second Wisconsin Cavalry, A Martyr To the Cause of Truth and Justice; comprising: Short Biographical Sketches, with the Story of His Death Sentence, Reprieve, Banishment, Hardships and Final Release. By Antoinette Barnum Ferris. Pauly Brothers, Printers Eau Claire, Wis. 1896', with edited notes and explanatory text by Carroll. It is NOT the original manuscript by Ferris but the J.M.Carroll typed version. Not only do we have the finished typed manuscript from Carroll but we also have the first draft that was done together with photocopies of sources Carroll used, with notes and annotations made.Carroll starts with an Introduction to the piece in which he writes in quite a personal way. Explaining how he finds military mysteries fascinating, his struggle to find out what did actually happen to Major Wickcliffe Cooper which was hindered by Custer. It's nice to see Carroll showing us a bit about himself. He spent a lot of his life writing about someone else it's quite nice to see what Carroll was like, his interests and the challenges that he attempted. He then goes on to address the purpose of this paper and that is the case of Leonard Lee Lancaster of Company L of the 2nd Regiment of Wisconsin Cavalry Volunteers. He was supposed to be executed for mutiny but Custer gave him a reprieve at the last moment. Carroll (in this piece) wonders why that was and thinks he can solve it. Carroll's question is Lancaster's rank and 'whether Custer was responsible for the planned and ordered execution or not'. Carroll goes on to further his questions on this mystery of a man and then proceeds to give a biography of Lancaster's life. After this comes the entire text in 37 pages of 'A Soldier's Souvenir or The Terrible Experiences of Lieut. L. L. Lancaster. By Antoinette Barnum Ferris.' It's in this piece that there are a lot of annotations by Carroll to correct spelling, grammar and general layout mistakes. The piece is written by Ms. Ferris, a neighbour of the Lancaster family all her life and could see the distress that his situation was causing the family. As well as this, being so close to them gave her a bird's eye view of what was happening to him. This article starts with an introduction of background information on Lancaster's early life and goes on to explain his career in the army, where it went wrong for him and what happened because of this. At one point Ferris explains when Lancaster first went to jail. The cell is described in great detail, as are the people who were there at the same time as him. It comes to the point where Lancaster is given his discharge papers and can return home. It's at this point that Ferris really comes alive and describes in great detail what it was like when he entered his family home. For example 'Instead of the robust, light-hearted young soldier that "went away to the wars" in '61, there returned a "shadow", - so worn and wasted by the hardships he had undergone that no one, not even his wife, knew him.' The book finishes off explaining how Lancaster then went on to apply for an honourable discharge. As well as the above, this collection includes the final typed draft done by Carroll. This piece has no annotations and is correct and as it should be. This is a one of a kind piece with the first draft, together with research notes and the final draft. It will make a great addition to any Custer collection. The format is Imperial 8.5" x 11" and in each section there are 51 pages plus 17 pages of photocopies with one of them. The pages are loose and are all stored in a brown envelope with a spilt pin fastening at the back and hand written on the front of it is: 'M.S.S. for Lancaster's Mutiny and Custer's Reprieve. John M. Carroll Editor.'John M. Carroll died in the summer of 1990 and left behind a vast body of work that added greatly to the scholarly study

Gauthier-Villars, Paris 1896 - First edition, in original printed wrappers, of the discovery of radioactivity. The Nobel Prize in Physics 1903 was shared between Becquerel, "in recognition of the extraordinary services he has rendered by his discovery of spontaneous radioactivity," and Marie and Pierre Curie, "in recognition of the extraordinary services they have rendered by their joint researches on the radiation phenomena discovered by Professor Henri Becquerel." "Becquerel was born in Paris and studied civil engineering at the École Polytechnique. Having obtained his diploma in 1877, he opted for a career as a scientist. He did research in optics, took his PhD in 1888, and was elected a member of the Academy of Sciences a year later. In 1892 Becquerel became professor at the Natural History Museum in Paris, like his father and grandfather before him (and later his son after him). In 1895 he was also appointed professor at the École Polytechnique. His speciality (as that of his father and grandfather) was the study of ?uorescence and phosphorescence. These are properties of materials to emit light if properly stimulated, usually by irradiation with light of shorter wavelength than that of the emitted light In the Académie des Sciences Röntgen’s discovery [of X-rays] was discussed in January 1896. It was quite natural for Becquerel to wonder, as Poincaré had suggested, whether X-rays were produced by some kind of phosphorescence. "Becquerel began investigations with materials which were phosphorescent if exposed to sunlight. Because of its scienti?c tradition the Museum possessed many samples of such material. This was a decisive advantage which he had over his competitors. His technique was clear and simple. He wrapped a photographic plate in thick black paper, protecting it from light, placed on it the phosphorescent substance, exposed the arrangement for some time to the direct sunlight, and ?nally developed the plate. Since X-rays were known to traverse the paper, the plate would be blackened if X-rays were produced. At ?rst the results were negative. But when he used a sample of potassium uranyl disulphate K2UO2 (SO4)22H2O, he observed an effect which he reported to the Academy on 24 February [in ‘Sur les radiations émises par phosphorescence’]. "A week later, on 2 March 1896, Becquerel reported again to the Academy [in ‘Sur les radiations invisibles émises par les corps phosphorescents’]. It is this report that contained the discovery which would make him famous [our emphasis]. We ?rst quote from a paragraph dealing with repetitions of his previous experiment: A photographic plate, gelatine with silver bromide, was enclosed in an opaque frame in black cloth, closed on one side by a sheet of aluminium; if one exposed the frame in full sunshine, even for a whole day, the plate was not fogged; but, if one had ?xed on the aluminium sheet, on the outside, a lamella of uranium salt [.] and if one exposed it for several hours to the sun, one recognised, after one had developed the plate in the usual way, that the silhouette of the crystalline lamella appeared in black on the sensitive plate."The unexpected discovery is described two paragraphs further down [p. 502]: I shall insist in particular on the following fact which seems to me very important and outside the phenomena one could expect to observe: The same crystalline lamellas, placed with respect to photographic plates in the same way [.] but kept in the dark, produce again the same photographic prints. Here is how I have been led to make that observation: Of the previous experiments some had been prepared on Wednesday 26th and on Thursday 27th of February and, since on these days the sun had shown itself only intermittently, I had kept the experiments prepared and placed the frames back in the dark into a drawer, leaving the lamellas of uranium salt in place. Since the sun had also not shown itself the following days, I developed the plates, expecting to ?nd very feeble images. The silhouettes appe [Attributes: First Edition]
