A week after the start of the trial in which "Post-Dispatch" editor Charles H Jones is trying to prevent Pulitzer from firing him, Pulitzer gives Jones his proxy to vote at a stockholders meeting

"Rare and historically important Printed Typed Document Signed ?Joseph Pulitzer,? 1p, 8.5? x 14?. New York, January 15, 1896. Also signed by Pulitzer?s assistant, ?witness: Alfred Bates ./ 10 East 55 Street / New York.? Folds. Fine condition. In part, ?... I, Joseph Pulitzer ... do hereby constitute make and appoint Charles H. Jones ... my proxy to represent me as a stockholder of the Pulitzer Publishing Company as to certain 1600 shares of the stock of said company by me sold to said Charles H. Jones on the 6th day of February, 1895 ... but which said shares of stock have not been transferred from me to said Charles H. Jones on the books of the said Pulitzer Publishing Company...?Charles H. Jones was appointed editor of the ?St. Louis Post-Dispatch? by Pulitzer on February 6, 1895, the day Jones purchased 1667 shares or one-sixth of Pulitzer capital stock from Pulitzer for $80,000. On January 6, 1896, nine days before Pulitzer signed this proxy, the trial of Jones v. Pulitzer opened in the St. Louis Circuit Court. Pulitzer did not like Jones? ?free-silver? policy fostered in his newspaper and ousted Jones as editor. Jones said his removal violated his 5 year employment contract. By this document, Pulitzer admits he sold Jones ?1600 shares,? but since the transfer was not yet ?on the books,? he still controlled those shares.By 1890. Joseph Pulitzer was virtually blind. His signatures were mostly signed by his secretaries. However, he personally signed legal documents. Autograph material authentically signed by Joseph Pulitzer is rare. Before this item became available, only one Pulitzer signed document or letter had appeared at a major public auction in at least the last 25 years."

        Hotel Register for "The Uplands"

Bethlehem, NH, 1896. Half Leather. Very Good. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Sound binding. Generally clean pages; some of the advertising pages have inkspots (they served as blotters for the registration pages) and edge wear. The cover shows some wear, heaviest at the spine ends. The gilt lettering and ruling is in nice shape. Turn-of-the-century guest register for one of the Grand Hotels of the White Mountains. The Uplands was built by the hotel magnate, Frank H. Abbott, in 1880. Entries are from June, 1896 to October, 1897. I haven't checked signatures but there could well be some important politicians, business tycoons, actors, inventors, sports figures, or other celebrities as many summered in the mountains to beat city heat, pollution, and allergens. The register ("Manufactured by The Maynard-Gouge Co., . . . Worcester, Mass.") alternates advertising pages with pre-printed registration forms. A 24-page "American Hotel Guide" published for the Hotel Register Publishers Association by the James T. Hair Company of Chicago precedes the registration pages.

        While the Billy Boils

Sydney:: Angus & Robertson,. 1896.. First edition, 'Fourth Thousand'. Hardcover. Very good condition. Signed presentation copy "to J. H. Simpson from Henry Lawson, Mangamaunu, New Zealand, 28/6/97". Henry Lawson (1867 - 1922) Australian short story writer and poet was an inspiration to many through his example of surmounting grinding difficulties. He resided in Mangamaunu for only six months. First Edition, 4th thousand title which was offered to the public in October 1896. This volume includes his well respected short story 'The Drover's Wife'; after a harrowing trip through drought stricken New South Wales in 1892 he wrote 'The Bush Undertaker,' also included here. The pressure of sales and the production delays had evidently caused publisher Robertson to engage a new printer to cope with the demand (Paul Eggert, Biography of a Book: Henry Lawson's "While the Billy Boils"). Small 8vo, xi, 333pp, 16pp of ads, teg. B&w plates. Green cloth w/ gold stamping on spine. With bookplate of Christopher Clark Geest at front paste down. OCLC: 154280213.

Crescent City, CA: Office of Crescent City, 1896. First edition. Hard Cover. Good +. 12mo. Original light grey stamped cloth with gilt title. Cloth rubbing, Front hinge started. Front endpaper chipped at corner. Rear endpaper missing. Overall all good, sound example. This 19th-century Northern California imprint is a long doggerel poem, but with one very interesting feature: it is the first mention in book form of the legend of the Big Foot (Sasquatch): "You have seen and heard the story, too, / Of how, upon Mount Siskiyou / Was seen an ape, or spook, or tramp / In region near the happy camp some years gone by— / That was of stature taller than / The ordinary height of man / Who fed on berries, roots and grouse, / And from whose eye / There gleamed the fierceness of the beast..." (37). The appendix reprints a newspaper account of the Bigfoot sighting, possibly the only place this account survives (we find no holdings anywhere). Only an 1884 Canadian newspaper account of Sasquatch precedes. According to census records, Musick (1844-1919) was a miner. Interestingly, his daughter Irene is listed as a printer. OCLC locates about 20 copies, almost all on the west coast, but rare in trade.

Original Watercolour View of Florence, Titled]: San Miniato and Porta St. Nicholo - Florence. March 1896.

1896 - March 1896. Watercolour and pencil on paper, ca. 25x35,5 cm (10x14 in). Mounted on cardboard, with a manuscript caption on the lower margin. A very good bright watercolour. This attractive watercolour view of Florence shows the embankment of the Arno with the medieval city gate Porta San Niccolo in the centre and the famous staircase leading to the basilica of San Miniato al Monte. The scene shows people and carriages crossing the central square where the gate stands (modern Piazza Giuseppe Poggi), several fishermen working on the low bank of the Arno; with distant city hills covered with cypresses and houses, and the silhouettes of the Apenninesto in the background. "Built in the 1320s, the best preserved of the city's medieval gates still stands sentinel on the banks of the Arno. Behind it, a monumental staircase designed by Giuseppe Poggi winds its way up towards Chiesa di San Miniato al Monte" (Lonely Planet about Porta San Niccolo). "San Miniato al Monte (St. Minias on the Mountain) is a basilica in Florence, central Italy, standing atop one of the highest points in the city. It has been described as one of the finest Romanesque structures in Tuscany and one of the most beautiful churches in Italy" (Wikipedia). The artist, George Huntley Gordon, an officer of the British Indian Army and a participant of the First Mahsud or Waziri Expedition on the North-West Frontier (1860).

Signed Thackeray letter (ALS) with Notes for Speech at Dinner October 11, 1855 by W.M. Thackeray on Eve of His Departure to America

Private Philadelphia, PA 1896 - First Edition. Signed by Author, Very Good/ No Jacket as Issued, Original Boards. This is an extraordinarily rare offering. The book itself was rare at the moment that it was printed in 1896. There were only forty copies privately printed. The book is in its original boards which show general aging. The front pastedown of the book has two plates attached. One for the Zamorano Club in Los Angeles California and one ownership plate for a William F. Gable. This book also contains a letter to actor William Macready who was a friend of Thackerays. The occasion of Mr. Thackeray heading for America germinated this literary gathering and dinner. Charles Dickens was the "Chairman" of the meeting. There were sixty places set and exactly sixty people sat down. They were the literary society of England at that time and this publication is important not just literarily but historically. First, The Book: As mentioned above the book is in drab tan and offwhite boards. It is unpaginated and full quarto in size. Every single page has a protective guard that is full size and is heavier than normal tissue guards. They are just a lighter paper stock than the text itself. The book shows external aging with some soiling. The lettering on the spine is still present and readable and the spine shows wear as well. The textblock is very clean and there is no foxing. There is a small fully closed tear to the ffep of about 1 1/2". The presentation case is custom designed and executed for this particular copy of the book. Remember there were only forty copies. The case is made of the highest quality red leather and it is lined with silk moire. There is 23kt gold lettering on the case and the sole detraction of the case is a slight dime-sized depression just over the word "notes" on the front of the case. The case is full clamshell and will protect this fine offering for generations. This book comes with a letter that was personally written and signed by Thackeray. It is in very fine condition and was written in Edinburgh, Scotland. Thackeray had two handwritings over the course of his life. He had a sloping hand which is very well seen in the body of the letter. He also had an "upright" hand which we can see in in his writing of the address. So in this one example we have samples of both of this author's different styles of penmanship. The content of the note is a very courteous decline of an invitation from a friend in Scotland. Basically he says that he is running out of time in that country and otherwise he would find it very pleasurable to accept the invitation. It is a very, very fine example of a hand-penned letter by a great Victorian novelist. I apologize for the length of this description but there was a lot to tell you about. Please do not hesitate to contact me with questions regarding this beautiful Antiquarian offering. We are pleased to send pictures on request. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Typed Letter Signed with two original sketches

New York 1896 - American architect and partner in the firm of McKim, Meade & White, the frontrunner among Beaux-Arts firms. He designed many structures for the rich and famous as well as several New York City landmarks. White was shot to death by millionaire Harry Kendall Thaw in 1906 at the age of 52. 1 page on "McKim, Meade & White" letterhead, 10.25 x 8 inches, New York City, March 9, 1896. Written to Melville E. Stone, Treasurer of the Eugene Field Monument Committee, in full: "In answer to your letter of March 26th. It will give me great pleasure to design the cover for the Monument Souvenir Edition of Eugene Field's of field flowers. Do I understand from you that the lettering of the cover will be as follows? Kindly advise me if you wish any change made." White then proceeds to draw two preliminary sketches of what he intended the binding and cover of the souvenir book edition to look like. Note: Melville E. Stone was the founder of the "Chicago Daily News" and had hired Eugene Field as a writer for that publication. Upon Field's death in 1895, Stone set forth a campaign whereby he raised thousands of dollars for the purpose of erecting an extravagant monument in his friend's memory, which was eventually be placed in the Chicago vicinity. The book "Field Flowers: Monument Edition" was released in 1896 and coincided with the inauguration of the campaign to raise funds for the eventual monument. Natural folds; staple holes near the upper left corner; several small inkblots near the date. Very good(-) condition. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Small Wars. Their Principles and Practice

London: HMSO, , 1896. Small octavo (186 × 117 mm) Contemporary black half skiver on matching pebble-grained cloth, title gilt to spine, gilt supralibros, edges sprinkled red. 12 plans on 8 sheets, 3 of them folding. A little rubbed, neatly rebacked with the original spine laid down, book plate of the Staff College, Camberley, to the front pastedown, their ink stamp to the front free endpaper, light toning, but a very good copy. First edition of the British Army's first text-book of counter insurgency. Callwell served in the Anglo-Transvaal War of 1881, and again in South Africa, 1899-1902, but his reputation is "as a skilled theorist and, predominantly, as a staff officer." He wrote on a range of subjects, mainly strategic and tactical, and was the series editor of the highly-rated "Campaigns and their Lessons" series for Constable, but this, his first published work issued by HMSO as an official manual, is perhaps his most influential. Examining British experiences in Asia and Africa, in campaigns including the Zulu War, the Sudan Expeditions, and frontier fighting in India, with a vignette on the French in Indochina, he draws lessons for conflicts "in all parts of the world where organised armies are struggling against opponents who will not meet them in the open field." (Introduction) Small Wars… "firmly established his reputation as the army's foremost expert on colonial warfare, and was also translated into French… It remained a standard textbook on the subject for the British army up to the Second World War and, in the view of several historians, established his credentials as the founding father of modern counter-insurgency." It was reprinted on numerous occasions, remaining in print as a facsimile, but this first edition, issued in a run of just 1,000 copies as a manual for the studious soldier is uncommon indeed.

[Autograph Letter Signed] To Miss Jessie Sharples. Westgate on Sea, Kent: Jan. 25, [18]96.Two pages folded, on paper headed 5 Beaufort Buildings, Strand, W.C."Bendigo, Westgate on Sea, Kent. To Miss Jessie Sharples. Jan 25, 96My Dear Child, your very delicious letter comes upon me in the midst of a long spell of difficult work which may keep me employed for some time, therefore I must ask you to look out for a reply & a little sketch some time in the future, & if you do not hear, --- well I shall always be glad of a reminder from such a quaint pen. Believe me. Yours very SincerelyLouis Wain"In 1895, the Wains moved from 16 Adrian Square to 7 Collingwood Terrace, part of Westgate Bay Avenue; Sir William [Ingram] named the terrace after his son Collingwood. Number 7 was a large corner house; later they moved to number 10, a smaller house further up the terrace, away from Margate. Louis Wain named both houses after the famous prizefighter (William Thompson 1811-1880, nicknamed Bendigo) whose reputation he so admired." (Dale, p.33)

[The Century Co.], [New York] 1896 - Original buff, wire-stitched self wrappers. A reissue of the 1894 Calendar, and perhaps even scarcer. At least, WorldCat locates only a single copy at the University of Texas, whereas it locates 14 copies of the 1894 Calendar. Auction records of the last twenty years seem to support this ratio. The inner blank margin of the penultimate leaf has been repaired, and the final two leaves have been archivally reattached. There is some splitting to the joint and some crinkling to the paper, but a Good copy of an exceedingly scarce Twain item. BAL 3439 [for the 1894 issue].

The Golf Book Of East Lothian

Private, printed in Edinburgh by T. & A. Constable 1896 - "The author was the minister of Dirleton. An interesting man. He wasn't just a parsinomious East Lothian Meenister. He was a bit of a high-flyer, a considerable womaniser, and enjoyed intoxicating beverages. His womanising always included gifts of jewelry. This extravagance eventually ran him into bankruptcy. John Kerr collected all the information about the golf courses and the clubs of East Lothian, wonderful stuff about the personalities, the problems, the triumphs, the whole cameraderie of golf. By the time Kerr came on the scene, the game was very popular. Everyone was playing, not just the aristocracy. The club at Dirleton Castle was founded in 1854 by 'shopkeepers, working men and artisans'. In Kerr's time, there was a club at Prestonpans, where the power station now stands" – Archie Baird, 1985. Small 4to. 516pp, 34pp appendix. Portrait frontis, 9 full-page plates, text illusts. Original tan cloth, rubbed, spine relaid, gilt title and vignettes to upper board and spine.
