De sympathia et antipathia rerum liber unus. De contagione et contagiosis morbis et curatione libri III.Venice: [heirs of L. Giunta], 1546.

Rare first edition, entirely untouched in its original binding, of the founding text of epidemiology. "This book represents a landmark in the development of our knowledge of infectious disease. Fracastoro was the first to state the germ theory of infection. He recognized typhus and suggested the contagiousness of tuberculosis. Haeser even describes him as the 'founder of scientific epidemiology'." (Garrison-Morton). <br/><br/> ❧Norman 827; Pincus 112; (both copies in modern binding); Lilly, <i>Notable Medical Books</i> 23; <i>Heirs of Hippocrates</i> 174; Garrison-Morton 2528. <br/><br/> "Although his medical poem on syphilis is perhaps more widely known, the present work is a far more important contribution to science, establishes Fracastoro as one of the foremost scientists of all time, and earns him the title of founder of modern epidemiology. <i>De contagion</i> contains the first scientifically reasoned statement of the true nature of infection, contagion, and the germ theory of disease and is the foundation of all modern views on the nature of infectious diseases. The influence of Fracastoro's ideas was evident during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in the work of Francesco Redi, Giovanni Maria Lancisi, and Antonio Vallisnieri as they contributed to a greater understanding of the nature of infection. Fracastoro's influence is also clearly reflected in the work of such modern scientists as Louis Pasteur, Joseph Lister, and Robert Koch as they broadened and furthered man's knowledge of infectious diseases. <br/><br/> "<i>De contagion</i> consists of three books. In the first book Fracastoro presents his germ theory of disease and discusses the three ways that infectious diseases are transmitted: l) by simple contact, 2) by indirect contact with what he calls fomites-objects that are not in themselves harmful but are able to harbor pathogenic micro-organisms and spread infection and, 3) by transmission from a distance or through the air. In the second book he explains the clinical signs of a wide variety of diseases that were prevalent at that time. He gives an early description of typhus and differentiates it from other fevers. He writes of congenital syphilis, recognizes the venereal source of syphilis, and describes its three stages. Fracastoro also discusses the contagiousness of smallpox, measles, tuberculosis, rabies, leprosy, and scabies. In the final book he concentrates on the treatment of contagious diseases and sets forth his general philosophy of therapeutics as well as his specific recommendations for such diseases as measles, smallpox, fevers, typhus, rabies, syphilis, and elephantiasis." (<i>Heirs of Hippocrates</i>).. 4to (208 x 149 mm), 84 leaves ff. [4] 76 [4] including the blank. Woodcut printer's devices on title and V3v, woodcut initials and dropped capitals.Contemporary limp vellum with manuscript lettering to spine, a few small wormholes through text in first few gatherings; light marginal waterstains at the beginning and end, a genuine and completley unrepaired copy in its original state. Provenance: A few corrections in a contemporary hand. Walter Pagel (1896-1983), inscribed 'Walter and Magda Pagel'; B. E. J. Pagel (1930-2007)

AN ADDRESS ISSUED BY THE WEST END MCKINLEY REPUBLICAN CLUB OPPOSING THE APPOINTMENT OF A COLORED CITIZEN IN PRESIDENT-ELECT MCKINLEY'S CABINET

Washington DC, 1896. ONLY EDITION. IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. 4pp, folded, caption title [as issued] An extraordinary manifesto, issued by an unrecorded African-American political organization, OPPOSING the appointment of a "Colored Citizen" to President McKinley's cabinet. The "Republican Club" was evidently founded in Washington, D.C. in December 1895, and consisted entirely of African-Americans. Its stated purpose was to furthering the interests of McKinley in securing his nomination, "after which the Club worked faithfully to secure his election." * In this elegantly written document, the members of the Club argued that it was more important that there be 600-2000 JOBS annually for African-Americans, instead of a single Cabinet position for a "colored citizen" (!) * The writers of the pamphlet "protest against the appointment of one of our race to a Cabinet position in recognition of the services of the colored voters in the recent campaign. What the colored voters prefer is to have the next administration give suitable recognition to the colored voters in all the States." Far better, the Club argues, to reward "the masses of the Afro-American people" than continually to grant patronage to "our alleged leaders." Blanche Bruce and Booker T. Washington are mentioned, but are criticized for having "proven themselves [to be] stumbling blocks." * Of this unknown political organization, Musca D. Harley is listed as President, and George W. Stewart as Chair of the Executive Committee. Stewart, born in slavery, became business manager and reporter for the "Washington Grit" (an African-American political newspaper) and a member of the Emancipation Association of the District of Columbia. Harley is listed in the 1910 Federal Census as born around 1872, a "mulatto" living in Washington, and working as a "jaffer" with plaster and cement. * Not in OCLC; not in the Library of Congress. Not located in LCP, Blockson, or Work. Our copy is currently the only one on the market.

[COSTUME]. Katalog der Freiherrlich von Lipperheideschen Kostumbibliothek

Berlin: Verlag von Franz Lipperheide, 1896 - 1901 und 1901 - 1905, 1896 - 1901 and 1901 - 1905. FIRST EDITION. Very Good. Thick 4to., 2 vols. (COMPLETE). xxi, [3], xvi, 645 pp., with 310 illustrations; xii, 840 pp., with 293 illustrations. Altogether 4818 tems described. WITH: Lipperheide's 12-page "Desiderata" printed on blue paper (inexplicably bound in Vol. 1 between pp. 48-49). Bound for Martin Breslauer in somewhat later maroon half morocco over purple cloth, spines faded to chestnut brown, one cover with unusual vertical stripes (sunned). Paper very slightly toned as is true of all copies of the first edition. Overall in excellent antiquarian condition. Very nice copy of the First Edition, now scarce: ours is the only complete copy on the market. This is the indispensible catalogue of the greatest Costume book collection ever formed, in which are meticulously described, with full collations and plate counts, more than 5000 titles, and which is illustrated by no less than 603 illustrations in the text. Our copy contains a signed letter from the collector to Martin Brelauser (see below). Franz Joseph and Frieda von Lipperheide were at that time the foremost publishers of fashion journals in the world (e.g. "Die Modenwelt," "Die Dame," "Illustrierte Frauen-Zeitung"). At one point their fashion magazine empire required a staff of more than 400 workers. Franz Joseph von Lipperheide (1838-1906) begin forming his costume collection in about 1870, systematically acquiring primary sources and secondary literature about fashion and traditional costume; civil, professional and religious costumes; weapons and uniforms; masks, dance and theatrical costumes, and much more. He also collected books related to weaving and knitting, tailoring, embroidery and other crafts, fashion magazines and illustrated newspapers, almanacs, etc. In 1899 Lipperheide gave his very important library to the Prussian State Library where it resided in a large and beautifully appointed room, the stately bookcases surrounded by choice paintings and miniatures. Among Lipperheide's collection of ca. 5,560 costume books, 45 MSS, and 840 fashion Almanacs are numerous treasures and great rarities. To these we must also add approximately 2,750 drawings, 23,700 individual woodcuts, etchings, and lithographs, plus ca. 2,500 photographs. Lipperheide's 686 paintings and 200 portrait miniatures are now in the Gemäldegalerie Berlin. -- Our copy contains a signed note (text secretarial), dated 29 July 1895, to Martin Breslauer while he was in Paris. Breslauer was to become one of the greatest European booksellers, although tragically he was ruined by the Nazis and was forced to flee with his family to London, in 1937. He died of shock on 16 October 1941, the result of one of many German bombing compaigns on London. REFERENCES: Besterman 1504; Colas 1880; Hiler p. 547. NDB.

The Indian Captive a Narrative of the Adventures and Sufferings of Matthew Brayton, in His Thirty-Four Years of Captivity Among the Indians of North-Western America

The Gray Printing Company, Fostoria, Ohio 1896 - 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 5 3/4" x 4 1/4". Original publisher's white boards with red imprint. [Front free endpaper leaf], [Title page], [Copyright page], [Preface], [blank], [5], 6-70, [blank leaf], [rear free endpaper leaf]. 2nd edition of this fantastic captivity story that is allegedly scarcer than the first edition of 1860 printed in Cleveland. In September 1825, 7 year old Matthew Brayton disappeared from the village of Wyandot in northwestern Ohio while walking with his brother to get supplies for his family. In the early years of his captivity, he was repeatedly traded to different tribes for various amounts of whiskey. Around the age of 16, he was traded by the Siouxs to the Snakes during the celebration of a truce in exchange for 11 gallons. He traveled with the Snakes, ultimately ending up in California where they stayed for 5 years. While in California, he interacted with the Diggers and describes their peculiarities. He also describes his numerous visits to San Francisco, then known as "Yerba Buena". After 5 years in California, the Snakes left for Utah and continued north towards Oregon. They then traveled further north "beyond the territory of the United States" where the Snakes allied with the Copper Heads. Brayton describes Copper Head and Snake culture in great detail, from childbirth to burial rites to division of labor. He discusses weaponry, hunting methods and vividly recounts the daily life of the tribes. In the far north, they got into skirmishes with the Esquimaux and traded with the Russians. At this point in the story, Brayton takes 8 pages to provide an exceptionally detailed account of a buffalo hunt and its aftermath. Years later, Brayton interacted with a member of the Hudson Bay Company who insisted that Brayton was white. Brayton insisted he was Native American, with Native American parents, but the persistence of the Hudson Bay man caused Brayton to question his heritage. Soon thereafter, Brayton married his chief's daughter and had two children with her. After again being told he was white by the Selkirker tribe, Brayton's chief told him he would be allowed to explore his personal history. He ultimately found out the truth and his story was told in the Cleveland Herald. The publication of that story allowed him to reunite with his brother. A scarce and compelling account in presentable condition. Howes B736. Wagner-Camp 351. Graff 394. Condition: Very good, with toned pages that are unmarked and odor free. Some offsetting to pages 52 and 53 where a triangular piece of paper once laid. Tight, solid binding with boards that are rubbed and lightly soiled. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        A Shropshire Lad

London: Kegan Paul, Trench, Trübner, & Co. Ltd.,, 1896. Octavo. Original quarter vellum, paper spine label, pale blue-grey paper sides, untrimmed. Housed in a green cloth chemise within a green quarter morocco slip case. Title page printed in red and black. Spine of slipcase sunned and a little scuffed, book spine lightly toned. A particularly nice copy. First edition, state "A", with the word "Shropshire" on paper spine label measuring 33 mm wide (Carter & Sparrow 2, paper label A). The entire first printing, made at Housman's expense, after Macmillan rejected the book, consisted of 500 sets of sheets, of which 150 were exported to the United States with an 1897 title page, 250 bound for the first British issue, and 100 bound up slightly later in a second state binding for Britain. "Though not an instant success, the little volume gradually won a large audience through the universality of its dominant themes (nature, love, war, and death) and the directness of its language and rhythms. In a period of war, uneasy peace, and rapid social change, Housman was one of the most familiar and most highly regarded of the poets of his time. His celebration of landscapes and a rural life distinctively and traditionally English contributed to his poetry's appeal" (ODNB).

Folio, 345 x 255 mm, bound in a contemporary French floral cloth, black leather label, gilt title preserving the front and rear wrappers for each issue, and the wrappers for the entire year. Paris: Floury, 1896-1897. |~||~||~||~||~||~| A fine set of the deluxe edition of this important fin-de-siècle periodical on printed China paper. This is a key document in the revival of the production of illustrated books in Paris at the end of the nineteenth century. Auguste Lepère, among the most prolific artists providing illustrations for books at the time, was one of the directors of L'Image. It was he who was responsible for ensuring that the work of most of the prominent French artists of the period was featured in its pages; among them, Cheret, Denis, Grasset, Helleu, Laboureur, Mucha, Lucien Pissarro, Toulouse-Lautrec and Félix Vallotton. L'Image is not just important for its illustrations, but also for its text, with art criticism by Roger Marx, as well as literary contributions by Pierre Louys, André Mellerio, Charles Maurice, Jules Renard, Georges Rodenbach and Emile Verhaeren, among others. This is the deluxe version on superior paper, with the ilustrations hors texte, by far the most scarce and desirable of the published issues. One of 100 copies on chine with each engraving printed hors-texte. Carteret, IV, 213. Gordon Ray, French, II, 422.

        Eigenh. Postkarte mit U.

München, 24. IV. 1896. - 1 S. Qu.-8vo.

First two (of five total) volumes. 96 full-page color lithographs. Folio, red leather-backed boards (well-worn and soiled; internally quite clean). Paris: Imprimerie Chaix, 1896-1897. First editions. Very good copies, clean and complete. Scarce. The Maîtres de l'Affiche (Masters of the Poster) were small format reproductions (pages measure 15.75 x 11.5 inches) of what were ostensibly the best and most famous posters from around Europe and America, as selected by the famous critic and poster supporter Roger Marx. They were printed by the Chaix publishing house as a concession to the growing craze of poster collecting at the end of the 19th-century. Every month between 1896-1900, while the Maîtres were being published, subscribers would receive four new plates. Each plate is a full color lithograph printed on high quality paper. The complete series consists of 256 images. The appeal of the Maîtres was, and remains, their small, easy-to-collect format. These are the complete first two volumes (of five) featuring plates 1 to 96.

Aux sanctuaires grecs. Paques 1912. XLVIIme croisiere de la "Revue Gà nà rale des Sciences".

      - Large folio. Original printed wrappers (in colour on the front cover, both after watercolours by Mme. Brouardel); pp. 14, ff. 17-74 (plates with tissue guards), pp. 75-6, title printed in red an blue, with initial leaf with text in red and blue and two photos printed in photogravure, map, 446 snapshots printed in photogravure; apart from tiny marginal spot to title, a fine copy in the slightly worn original patterned box with cloth ties. Extremely rare sole edition (number 68 of 130 copies )of this luxuriously and privately printed photographic travelogue of a study trip on a ship around Greece, organized by the founder and director of the periodical Revue gà nà rale des Sciences, Louis Olivier. The first trip had taken place to celebrate the First Olympic Games of 1896. Most of the tourists where French Grecophiles or former pupils of the Ã&#137;cole française d'Athà nes, altogether a very cultured and educated group. The director of the journey and author of the text was Gustave Fourgà res (1863-1927), an archaeology profassor specialized in Ancient Greece. This copy was given to M. Poulenc, a member of the tour; we assume that the rarity, both commercially and institutionally (not in COPAC, both KVK and OCLC locate copies in Paris, Lausanne and Geneva) is due to the fact that each of the participants was sent a copy of this work to which several had contributed with their photographic skills. The photos in this impressive volume were not published anywhere else. See Haris Yiakoumis and Isabelle Roy, La croisià re des savants, 1896-1912. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Football

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company. 1896. First. First edition. 425pp., line drawings. Early, neat owner name, page edges a little soiled, some soiling to the boards, a very good copy. An early book on football issued to help the development of the game. Camp was the Coach of the Yale football team and probably did more than anyone else to popularize the game and to shape the rules as they now stand including cutting the number of players to 11 (from 15), instituting the quarterback position, creating a scrimmage to institute play (rather than a "scrum") and designing the "gridiron" pattern of the field. Additionally, he was probably the first national figure to promote personal physical fitness, especially during the First World War. A lovely copy. .
