The Works.

Hammersmith Kelmscott Press 1896 - Folio, edition limited to 425 copies, edited by F.S. Ellis, and W.W. Skeat, printed in red and black, 87 wood-engraved illustrations designed by Edward Burne-Jones, woodcut borders, frames, ornaments and initials throughout, near contemporary blue morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, spine in seven compartments gilt lettered in second, gilt edges, slipcase, an excellent example. The most splendid book produced by the Kelmscott Press, and one of the finest illustrated books ever produced. William Morris, the 19th-century designer, social reformer and writer, founded the Kelmscott Press towards the end of his life. He wanted to revive the skills of hand printing, which mechanisation had destroyed, and restore the quality achieved by the pioneers of printing in the 15th century. The magnificent Works of Geoffrey Chaucer, published in 1896, is the triumph of the press. Its 87 illustrations are by Edward Burne-Jones, the celebrated Victorian painter, who was a life-long friend of Morris. The Kelmscott Chaucer set a new benchmark for book design at the end of the 19th century. It was also the last great project of Morris' life, bringing together two of his passions. First, his love of medieval literature, which inspired the subjects and style of much of his own writing; Second, his socialist philosophy, which looked back to a time before mechanization and division of labour had destroyed, as he saw it, the personal fulfillment and social function of meaningful work. The book was exceptional in its ambitious number of illustrations and rich decorative borders. "If we live to finish it," Burne-Jones wrote, "it will be like a pocket cathedral – so full of design and I think Morris the greatest master of ornament in the world." Morris and Burne-Jones worked on the book for four years. Early in 1892, two trial pages were set in one of Morris' types, called 'Troy'. The results were not satisfactory, the problem being the type size. A smaller version of the same design was cut, and christened 'Chaucer'. Morris had intended to begin designs for the decorative borders immediately, but illness prevented him from starting until a year later. Meanwhile, Edward Burne-Jones spent every Sunday on the book's 87 illustrations, working long hours in fear that Morris might die before the project was finished. His pencil drawings were painted over in Chinese white and Indian ink by R. Catterson-Smith, whose interpretive role is often overlooked. The black and white designs were then transferred to wooden blocks and engraved by William Harcourt Hooper. On seeing the first copy, Burne-Jones wrote: "When Morris and I were little chaps at Oxford, if such a book had come out then we should have just gone off our heads, but we have made at the end of our days the very thing we would have made then if we could."         [Burne-Jones, Edward- Platino Photograph by Emery of Burne-Jones Original Kelmscott Chaucer Drawing]

An original platino photograph taken by Emery Walker of Edward Burne-Jones' illustration for the 1896 Kelmscott Chaucer, "The Legend of Didonis," appearing on page 426. Circa 1892-1894. From the original estate of Robert Catterson-Smith, who reworked all of the Burne-Jones original pencil drawings for the book, through a novel and intricate process: making a pale platino print (Emory Walker), applying a thin wash of Chinese white with a little size in it (Catterson-Smith), redrawing the lines with a very sharp pencil followed by inking with a fine round sable brush (Catterson-Smith), making another photograph directly on the wood block (Emery Walker), which Hooper then cut for the final woodblock. This platino photograph print of the original Burne-Jones pencil drawing for the illustration which was then used by Catterson-Smith in the process outlined above. These early platino prints are exceedingly rare. Mounted onto a thick card backing. Size of platino: 135 x 175; Size of image: 125 x 166mm. Slight foxing to outside card, photograph not affected. Near fine. There are two crudely drawn sketches of an arm folded at right angles on the back of the card sheet.

        Duck Shooting from a Battery

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1896. Chromolithograph, laid onto original backing board. In good condition with the exception of a few nicks within the image. This is a fascinating shooting print by one of America's most celebrated sporting artists, of a hunter surrounded by decoys taking aim at his quarry Arthur Burdett Frost (1851-1928) is remembered as one of America's best-loved sporting artists. His evocative hunting and shooting prints capture the drama of the sport and provide an invaluable visual record of rural America. Frost was an incredibly successful artist, he illustrated more than ninety books and produced thousands of illustrations for Harper's Weekly, Scribner's and Life magazines. Although born in Philadelphia, he spent the majority of his working career in New Jersey where he produced some of his most noted work. Frost's most desirable and rare prints are the twelve chromolithographs from the portfolio entitled "Shooting Pictures", depicting various shooting scenes from upland gunning to waterfowling. The portfolio, which was printed on separate sheet and tipped onto card backing boards, was reproduced by Charles Scribner's Sons in 1895. This dramatic image is a wonderful example from this famous series and demonstrates why Frost is considered one of America's most celebrated sporting artists.

Eigenh. Brief mit U. („A. Philippi").

Hannover, 23. August 1896. - 4 SS. auf Doppelblatt. Gr.-8vo.

Lancaster's Mutiny and Custer's Reprieve. An Original 51 page typed Manuscript. TOGETHER WITH The first draft by Carroll along with photocopies of sources

. First Edition. Not Relevant. Very Good Condition. This is a brilliant collection, based upon the extremely rare pamphlet 'A Soldier's Souvenir: or The Terrible Experiences of Lieut. L. L. Lancaster, of the Second Wisconsin Cavalry, A Martyr To the Cause of Truth and Justice; comprising: Short Biographical Sketches, with the Story of His Death Sentence, Reprieve, Banishment, Hardships and Final Release. By Antoinette Barnum Ferris. Pauly Brothers, Printers Eau Claire, Wis. 1896', with edited notes and explanatory text by Carroll. It is NOT the original manuscript by Ferris but the J.M.Carroll typed version. Not only do we have the finished typed manuscript from Carroll but we also have the first draft that was done together with photocopies of sources Carroll used, with notes and annotations made.Carroll starts with an Introduction to the piece in which he writes in quite a personal way. Explaining how he finds military mysteries fascinating, his struggle to find out what did actually happen to Major Wickcliffe Cooper which was hindered by Custer. It's nice to see Carroll showing us a bit about himself. He spent a lot of his life writing about someone else it's quite nice to see what Carroll was like, his interests and the challenges that he attempted. He then goes on to address the purpose of this paper and that is the case of Leonard Lee Lancaster of Company L of the 2nd Regiment of Wisconsin Cavalry Volunteers. He was supposed to be executed for mutiny but Custer gave him a reprieve at the last moment. Carroll (in this piece) wonders why that was and thinks he can solve it. Carroll's question is Lancaster's rank and 'whether Custer was responsible for the planned and ordered execution or not'. Carroll goes on to further his questions on this mystery of a man and then proceeds to give a biography of Lancaster's life. After this comes the entire text in 37 pages of 'A Soldier's Souvenir or The Terrible Experiences of Lieut. L. L. Lancaster. By Antoinette Barnum Ferris.' It's in this piece that there are a lot of annotations by Carroll to correct spelling, grammar and general layout mistakes. The piece is written by Ms. Ferris, a neighbour of the Lancaster family all her life and could see the distress that his situation was causing the family. As well as this, being so close to them gave her a bird's eye view of what was happening to him. This article starts with an introduction of background information on Lancaster's early life and goes on to explain his career in the army, where it went wrong for him and what happened because of this. At one point Ferris explains when Lancaster first went to jail. The cell is described in great detail, as are the people who were there at the same time as him. It comes to the point where Lancaster is given his discharge papers and can return home. It's at this point that Ferris really comes alive and describes in great detail what it was like when he entered his family home. For example 'Instead of the robust, light-hearted young soldier that "went away to the wars" in '61, there returned a "shadow", - so worn and wasted by the hardships he had undergone that no one, not even his wife, knew him.' The book finishes off explaining how Lancaster then went on to apply for an honourable discharge. As well as the above, this collection includes the final typed draft done by Carroll. This piece has no annotations and is correct and as it should be. This is a one of a kind piece with the first draft, together with research notes and the final draft. It will make a great addition to any Custer collection. The format is Imperial 8.5" x 11" and in each section there are 51 pages plus 17 pages of photocopies with one of them. The pages are loose and are all stored in a brown envelope with a spilt pin fastening at the back and hand written on the front of it is: 'M.S.S. for Lancaster's Mutiny and Custer's Reprieve. John M. Carroll Editor.'John M. Carroll died in the summer of 1990 and left behind a vast body of work that added greatly to the scholarly study of Custer, and his writings should be considered the equal of Graham, Kuhlman, Brininstool, et al. Carroll devoted much of his life to the study of George Armstrong Custer, and wrote or edited many books on the subject. On his death his collection passed to his long time friend and associate Robert Aldrich, and it was finally sold at auction around 1996 by PBA. Material from his collection is now scarce on the open market, and in particular his own manuscripts, notes, and typescripts. Quantity Available: 1. Category: General Custer; Inventory No: 188475. .

Mucha, Alphonse - Lorenzaccio, Sarah Bernhardt.

Prijs: € 4.150,- (incl. lijst, BTW margeregeling).

Cloth rubbed at spine ends and corner tips, lower front corner tips. bruised, several small water strikes to front cover, a very good. copy. Scarce. OCLC reports a single copy in North America (Brigham. Young University), the other 5 are in the UK. A rare and interesting. book. (#147779). First edition. Presentation copy with unsigned inscription by the author on the half title page: "Frank FitzGibbon / with the author's best wishes / for a happy New Year. / December 28, 1896." A tale of the Fiskmann, a lost race of fish-like people, probably inspired by Scottish folklore telling of the Selkies, legendary seal-people. The story is told partly from the point of view of Jan, a descendant of the Fiskmann, who has retained vestiges of their physical traits, mainly webbed feet and short fin-like arms; and partly from that of the narrator, who meets Jan and his beautiful-but-sad daughter at a German watering hole. The young pair fall in love and eventually find happiness, but in between we hear the tale of Jan's search for his ancestors, told in a manner that should appeal to antiquarians. He discovers that he descends from a Fiskmann who long ago betrayed his people after they abandoned him during a battle with humans. Generations of intermarrying with humans have diluted the fish-like traits in Jan and eliminated them in his daughter. He traces the remnant of the fishmen to the barren northeast coast of Scotland, where they live in undersea caves. He eventually gains their trust and spends much of his time with them. But when they ask him to give his daughter in marriage to one of them, he balks and this sets off the tragic denouement. The story is told with more of an elegiac than horrific tone, reminiscent a little of Hudson's GREEN MANSIONS. The most fantastic element of the story involves the Gubbe, the title given to the leader of the fish people, who lives for hundreds of years, can see into the future, has armor-like scales on his body, and never forgets that Jan's ancestor once betrayed them. The "ban" of the title refers to the curse that the Gubbe laid on Jan's ancestor and all his descendants. A little short on suspense, but an unusual story for the period. The story's key action takes place in the ocean littoral, with its rocky formations rising and falling with the tide. The plodding verisimilitude of this part of the narration anticipates Childers' use seven years later of a similar setting in THE RIDDLE OF THE SANDS. These settings manage to combine a sense of mystery with a sense of the mundane. The coastal territory, both a landscape and a seascape and neither one, calls up none of the traditional picturesque associations of either land or ocean, yet is more threatening in an ontological sense, as it has the stability of neither land nor sea. It is a strange shifting world, shallow yet elusive. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 220. Suvin, Victorian Science Fiction in the UK, p. 66. Reginald 14770. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978).
