        The World Awheel.

New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company,, 1896. With Fac-similes of Water Color Paintings by Â… Edited by Volney Streamer. Quarto. Original green half cloth and diaper-textured silver paper floral printed boards, title gilt to the spine, and to the upper board with gilt bicycle device and decorative silver ribbon and wheel devices, top edge gilt. 12 high-quality chromolithographic plates including the frontispiece. A little rubbed and lightly soiled, some professional restoration at the extremities and to the front, closed tear to front free endpaper and half-title also professionally repaired, light browning throughout as usual, overall a very good copy. First and only edition. Extremely uncommon, just 8 copies listed on OCLC, all in North America, no copies traced at auction. Wonderful Gibson Girl-style illustrations on a cycling theme. The twelve images, originally published by the Frederick A. Stokes Company in their Cycling World Calendar, represent bicyclistes of different nationalities; "they are Frenchy in subject, but have much action and good colour, and are strongly drawn" (New York Times), two feature American subjects, both in New York locations, Riverside Drive and Central Park. The original artwork was offered for sale at the Keppel Gallery in 1898. The plates are accompanied by a selection of prose and poetry inspired by the cycling craze. An attractive and highly-presentable copy, pencilled gift inscription to the front free endpaper of Samuel B. Cator, proprietor of the City Book Company, "a place where the Baltimore literati gathered" (Miller, The Scent of Eternity: A Life of Harris Elliott Kirk of Baltimore, p.659). On his death in 1921 the shop closed, and Cator was obituarized as one of "the quaintest, most original, most unworldly and most enjoyable geniuses that ever lived".

Printed titles and half titles; portrait plate of Catherine II; decorative title; dedication leaf; iv, (ii), 295, (1) pages; printed titles and half title; 69, (1) pages; well-executed reproductions of the original's 22 superb phototype plates with tissue guards; printed title and half title; portrait plate of Peter III; decorative title; ii, (2), 40, 14 pages; well-executed reproductions of the original's 2 superb phototype plates with tissue guards. Only slight signs of wear. Fine. Well-produced reprints, with photographically reproduced plates that, while unable to truly replicate the outstanding originals, are far superior than halftone plates would be. The complete two volumes on Elizabeth I, also including the section on Peter III, of Grand Duke Georgii Mikhailovich's monumental work, published over a quarter century in a dozen volumes. Gromachevskii wrote that Monety Tsarstvovaniya is a "colossal and classic scientific work which has no equal in the Russian or in the entire foreign field of numismatic literature. Especially important for the coverage of monetary history through the inclusion of a vast wealth of hitherto inaccessible documentation. Each volume contains a well-focused summary covering the technical and fiscal aspects of the coinage it deals with, along with succinct, precise descriptions of the coins." The renowned numismatic researcher and collector Georgii Mikhailovich was born in Tiflis in 1863 and was murdered on January 28, 1919 by the Bolsheviks along with three other Russian Grand Dukes. His tragic end was in contrast to a life of privilege. The Grand Duke began collecting coins as a teenager and, being of exceptional means, soon formed an impressive collection. In Some Rare Coins in My Collection, he first proposed the publication of a corpus of Russian coinage from Peter the Great onwards. A corpus of pre-Petrine coinage had already been proposed by Count Tolstoï a few years earlier. The Grand Duke funded the project and under his direction the various volumes were compiled by Giel, Demmeni and others. Twelve volumes had appeared when the outbreak of war curtailed completion. Though 200 original copies of each volume were printed, the series has suffered heavy attrition over the years. Clain-Stefanelli 11178*. Grierson 193. Gromachevskii 92.

        Our Mutual Friend.

London: Chapman and Hall [1896], 1896. CROWN EDITION, in scarce original printed DUST-WRAPPER. Octavo, pp.x; 683; [1], blank. Publisher's russet-coloured buckram blocked in gilt and black, complete with rare paper jacket. With forty illustrations by Martin Stone. One of the author's most famous tales, issued as part of the 'Dickens Crown Edition' which was published between 1896-1899. Internally clean, gilt to spine tarnished else cloth is bright and fresh; fragile jacket with some chips and tears, neatly stabilised to reverse side with archival tape, losses to spine ends and joints, toned to same. A remarkable survival of a nineteenth century dustwrapper on a popular title by a major author. Rare thus. 'Our Mutual Friend,' written in the years 1864–65, is the last completed novel written by Charles Dickens, and concerns money, and what money can make of life. Preceding Dickens' final crime-based work 'The Mystery of Edwin Drood', this novel also features elements of intrigue and suspense; John Harmon, a wealthy young heir, is supposed drowned and in a case of mistaken identity his estate is passed to Boffin, a former servant of his father. John must infiltrate the Boffin household and gain their trust and friendship in order to regain his fortune.

The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer now newly imprinted.

Hammersmith: printed by William Morris at the Kelmscott Press,, 1896. Large folio (421 x 280 mm). 20th century blue morocco over bevelled boards by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, gilt panelled spine (gilt tooled on the raised bands with a fleur-de-lis motif), single-line gilt border on sides, three-line gilt turn ins. Housed in a morocco trimmed blue cloth, fleece-lined slipcase. Printed in black and red in Chaucer type, the titles of longer poems printed in Troy type. Double columns. With 87 woodcut illustrations after Sir Edward Burne-Jones, redrawn by Robert Catterson-Smith and cut by W. H. Hooper, woodcut title-page, 14 variously repeated woodcut borders, 18 variously repeated woodcut frames around illustrations, 27 nineteen-line woodcut initial words, numerous three-, six-, and ten-line woodcut initial letters, and woodcut printer's device, all designed by William Morris, and cut by C. E. Keates, W. H. Hooper, and W. Spielmeyer. Spine lightly sunned, a few scuffs to slipcase. One of only 425 paper copies, out of a total edition of 438 copies. The most ambitious and magnificent book of the Press, it was four years in the making. Morris designed the watermark for the paper, which was copied from an Italian incunable in Morris's collection and made entirely of linen by Batchelor. It took several requests before Clarendon Press granted permission to use Skeat's new edition of Chaucer. Burne-Jones called the book a pocket cathedral it is so full of design, and the finest book ever printed; if W. M. had done nothing else it would be enough. Burne-Jones devoted all his Sundays for almost three years to the work, and Morris came to talk with him as he drew. As the artist worked he increased the number of proposed illustrations from 48 to 60 to 72 to 87, and Morris accepted each change. The process of adapting the drawings to the woodblock, and engraving them, was entrusted to W. H. Hooper and R. Catterson-Smith, with Burne-Jones closely supervising every detail. Of these lovely pictures, those for the Canterbury Tales, the Romaunt of the Rose, Troilus and Criseyde, and the Legende of Goode Wimmen are better known than those for Chaucer's translation of Boethius, his prayer to the Virgin, the Parlement of Foules, A Treatise on the Astrolabe, and the surrealistic House of Fame. All are equally beautiful, and all contain images which remind one strongly of his paintings. "The Kelmscott Chaucer is not only the most important of the Kelmscott Press's productions; it is also one of the great books of the world. Its splendour can hardly be matched among the books of the time." (Ray, The Illustrator and the Book in England).

Mucha, Alphonse - Lorenzaccio, Sarah Bernhardt.

Prijs: € 4.150,- (incl. lijst, BTW margeregeling).

        The Works.

Hammersmith Kelmscott Press 1896 - Folio, edition limited to 425 copies, edited by F.S. Ellis, and W.W. Skeat, printed in red and black, 87 wood-engraved illustrations designed by Edward Burne-Jones, woodcut borders, frames, ornaments and initials throughout, near contemporary blue morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, spine in seven compartments gilt lettered in second, gilt edges, slipcase, an excellent example. The most splendid book produced by the Kelmscott Press, and one of the finest illustrated books ever produced. William Morris, the 19th-century designer, social reformer and writer, founded the Kelmscott Press towards the end of his life. He wanted to revive the skills of hand printing, which mechanisation had destroyed, and restore the quality achieved by the pioneers of printing in the 15th century. The magnificent Works of Geoffrey Chaucer, published in 1896, is the triumph of the press. Its 87 illustrations are by Edward Burne-Jones, the celebrated Victorian painter, who was a life-long friend of Morris. The Kelmscott Chaucer set a new benchmark for book design at the end of the 19th century. It was also the last great project of Morris' life, bringing together two of his passions. First, his love of medieval literature, which inspired the subjects and style of much of his own writing; Second, his socialist philosophy, which looked back to a time before mechanization and division of labour had destroyed, as he saw it, the personal fulfillment and social function of meaningful work. The book was exceptional in its ambitious number of illustrations and rich decorative borders. "If we live to finish it," Burne-Jones wrote, "it will be like a pocket cathedral – so full of design and I think Morris the greatest master of ornament in the world." Morris and Burne-Jones worked on the book for four years. Early in 1892, two trial pages were set in one of Morris' types, called 'Troy'. The results were not satisfactory, the problem being the type size. A smaller version of the same design was cut, and christened 'Chaucer'. Morris had intended to begin designs for the decorative borders immediately, but illness prevented him from starting until a year later. Meanwhile, Edward Burne-Jones spent every Sunday on the book's 87 illustrations, working long hours in fear that Morris might die before the project was finished. His pencil drawings were painted over in Chinese white and Indian ink by R. Catterson-Smith, whose interpretive role is often overlooked. The black and white designs were then transferred to wooden blocks and engraved by William Harcourt Hooper. On seeing the first copy, Burne-Jones wrote: "When Morris and I were little chaps at Oxford, if such a book had come out then we should have just gone off our heads, but we have made at the end of our days the very thing we would have made then if we could." (British Library Online Gallery). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[Burne-Jones, Edward- Platino Photograph by Emery of Burne-Jones Original Kelmscott Chaucer Drawing]

An original platino photograph taken by Emery Walker of Edward Burne-Jones' illustration for the 1896 Kelmscott Chaucer, "The Legend of Didonis," appearing on page 426. Circa 1892-1894. From the original estate of Robert Catterson-Smith, who reworked all of the Burne-Jones original pencil drawings for the book, through a novel and intricate process: making a pale platino print (Emory Walker), applying a thin wash of Chinese white with a little size in it (Catterson-Smith), redrawing the lines with a very sharp pencil followed by inking with a fine round sable brush (Catterson-Smith), making another photograph directly on the wood block (Emery Walker), which Hooper then cut for the final woodblock. This platino photograph print of the original Burne-Jones pencil drawing for the illustration which was then used by Catterson-Smith in the process outlined above. These early platino prints are exceedingly rare. Mounted onto a thick card backing. Size of platino: 135 x 175; Size of image: 125 x 166mm. Slight foxing to outside card, photograph not affected. Near fine. There are two crudely drawn sketches of an arm folded at right angles on the back of the card sheet.

        Duck Shooting from a Battery

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1896. Chromolithograph, laid onto original backing board. In good condition with the exception of a few nicks within the image. This is a fascinating shooting print by one of America's most celebrated sporting artists, of a hunter surrounded by decoys taking aim at his quarry Arthur Burdett Frost (1851-1928) is remembered as one of America's best-loved sporting artists. His evocative hunting and shooting prints capture the drama of the sport and provide an invaluable visual record of rural America. Frost was an incredibly successful artist, he illustrated more than ninety books and produced thousands of illustrations for Harper's Weekly, Scribner's and Life magazines. Although born in Philadelphia, he spent the majority of his working career in New Jersey where he produced some of his most noted work. Frost's most desirable and rare prints are the twelve chromolithographs from the portfolio entitled "Shooting Pictures", depicting various shooting scenes from upland gunning to waterfowling. The portfolio, which was printed on separate sheet and tipped onto card backing boards, was reproduced by Charles Scribner's Sons in 1895. This dramatic image is a wonderful example from this famous series and demonstrates why Frost is considered one of America's most celebrated sporting artists.

        3 Autograph letters signed.

Paris, 11 December 1893 and 4 April 1896.

Eigenh. Brief mit U. („A. Philippi").

Hannover, 23. August 1896. - 4 SS. auf Doppelblatt. Gr.-8vo. Hrsg. v. Franz Neubert. Zit. n. DBA II 1004, 269). – Papierbedingt etwas gebräunt und mit kleinen Randläsuren.
