Portretten van Stefan George en Albert Verwey. Droge naald op Japans.

      - Beeldformaat: 15,8 x 15,8 cm. Onder passe-partout: 31,7 x 26,8 cm. Tweemaal gesigneerd in de plaat met de tekst (deels in spiegelbeeld, deels overlappend): 'Stefan George Alb. Verwey/ Stefan George/ Katwyk 19002 [sic]/ Zee'. Linksonder genummerd in potlood: '20/25'.

A scrap album containing an exceptional collection of American advertising and trade cards

New York [and elswhere], 1896. Folio. (14 1/2 x 12 inches). Approximately 350 larger ephemeral items (and about 200 small scraps) mounted on both pastedowns and recto and verso of 22 leaves. (All leaves browned, 3 leaves split vertically, others with margins chipped, some loosely inserted). Original rose-coloured glazed paper-covered boards, lower cover blocked in blind and lettered 'Pat. March 76' in blind, the upper cover blocked in gilt with three shaped raised panels with gilt borders enclosing chromolithographic images, backstrip blocked in gilt (corners rounded, some fading to upper cover and backstrip, inner hinges broken) A spectacular album with an unusually rich assortment of advertising and trade cards, including a selection chromolithographed designs of birds after Audubon. Internal evidence suggests that the album was probably assembled by a New York State resident living just south of Rochester - possibly from near Bath, Cohocton or Canandaigua, the patent date of the album gives a 'now earlier than' date, whilst there are a number of dated items amongst the scraps, the latest being 1896. Included are a large number of cards issued by local businesses, as well as more national concerns like a fine series of six advertising cards for 'Wright's Indian Vegetable Pills" featuring toddlers playing baseball ("Tum on, ets' p'ay ball"; "See me tech it!"; "Aint dot out!"; "I'se bo'en home"; "I'se dot it!"). There are also 33 'Arm & Hammer' bird cards after designs by John James Audubon (13 from the Arm & Hammer Brand / Church & Co. "Beautiful Birds of America" Collectors' Card, 1st Series from 1894; the others probably from the second series).

Posthumous Memoirs of Helena Petrovna Blavatsky

Boston: Jos. M. Wade, 1896. 1st. Original Wraps. Collectible; Very Good. The 1896 1st edition of this very uncommon, posthumously-published treatise by Madame Blavatsky on spirit-writing. "Dictated from the spirit world, upon the typewriter, independent of all human contact, under the supervision of G.W.N. Vost, to bring to light the things of truth, and affirm the continuity of life and the eternal activity of the soul immortal". And also on the title page: "Given to my Astral friend and associate Jos. M. Wade --H.P.B." A bright, solid example of a fragile publication. VG- in its pictorial wrappers, with light soiling to the panels and light chipping and creasing along the top-edges and at the spine crown. Still though, a sturdy, very presentable octavo. Scarce (not listed in Besterman, Price or Bibliotheca Esoterica).

        JUDE THE OBSCURE

1896. With an Etching by H. Macbeth-Raeburn and a Map of Wessex. (London:) James R. Osgood, McIlvaine & Co., (1896). Original dark blue-green cloth with monogram device in gilt. First Edition of Hardy's last great novel, issued as Vol. VIII of "The Wessex Novels." Titled HEARTS INSURGENT at the time of its serial appearance, the book was ahead of its time; the depiction of Jude and his cousin Sue settling down together and having two children (though unmarried) was too much for the 1890s public. After JUDE (and due in part to the outcry over it), Hardy was to spend his remaining 30+ years writing only verse.~In this copy, the last pages of chapters are not numbered in gatherings "A" through "D", but are numbered in gatherings "E" through "H" (such pages are never numbered in gatherings "I" onward). In most copies, as here, some but not all of the first eight gatherings have numbered pages, presumably as later sheets were gradually altered to conform to the latter part of the book.)~This is a fine, bright copy (one small faint mark near the bottom of the front cover). Purdy pp 86-91.

With many illustrations. Number of Volumes: Three volumes comprising all (eight) issues Illustrated by Aubrey Beardsley (et al.) Bound in publisher’s blue buckram with gilt pictorial covers designed by Aubrey Beardsley. On the spine, title, editor, number, publisher and date gilt, and a gilt ornament within a rectangular fillet. All edges uncut (i.e., untrimmed) Vol. II 2A2.3 unopened; vol. III. 3G3.4 unopened. Mild rubbing to corners. Head- and tail-pieces bumped. Vol. I 108, in which the Christmas-card has been tipped, is detached. Edges of text-block browned, otherwise remarkably clean. Beardsley’s gilt designs to the covers are quite fresh. A splendid set, utterly unsophisticated. Conceived by Symons, Beardsley and Smithers (the publisher infamous for his pornography), "The Savoy" features short stories, poems, essays and reviews, along with many illustrations (thirty-two by Beardsley, ten by William Blake), from bright names in the late-XIXc firmament: Symons and Beardsley, George Bernard Shaw, William Butler Yeats, Max Beerbohm, Havelock Ellis, Joseph Conrad, Ford Madox Heuffer (later Ford), Paul Verlaine, Ernest Dowson and Edmund Gosse inter alia. Swimming against the current of criticism that continues today, Symons in the first issue articulates the periodical’s modus operandi: "We have no formulas, and we desire no false unity of form or matter. We have not invented a new point of view. We are not Realists, or Romanticists, or Decadents. For us, all art is good which is good art." (Vol. I, p. [5].) To be sure, "Decadent" is the easiest label for the publication, but it is by no means indulgent. Still, its reception by the public was not as warm as that by the critics. Initially quarterly, it accelerated to monthly by the second half of the year, whence the eight issues. Symons in his editorial note to the final issue (vol. III, p. [7]) announces the publication of the three-volume set with Beardsley-designed covers, of which the present item is an example. It was an efflorescence that could not persist; even so, it leaves us with Havelock Ellis’s immortally wise words about populism: "For it may be a foolish fancy, but I do not like drinking at those pools which are turbid from the hooves of my fellow creatures; when I cannot get there before the others I like to wait until a considerable time after they have left. I could not read my Catullus in peace if I had an uneasy sense that thousands of my fellow creatures were writing to the newspapers to say what a nice girl Lesbia was, and how horrid a person Gellius, condescending to approve the poet’s fraternal sentiments, lamenting the unwholesome tone of his Atys." (Vol. III, p. 36.) [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Thus Spake Zarathustra: A Book for All and None

London: H. Henry and Co, 1896. First English edition of the author's magnum opus. Octavo, original cloth. An excellent near fine example with only light rubbing. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Friedrich Nietzsche was one of the most revolutionary and subversive thinkers in Western philosophy, and Thus Spoke Zarathustra remains his most famous and influential work. It describes how the ancient Persian prophet Zarathustra descends from his solitude in the mountains to tell the world that God is dead and that the Superman, the human embodiment of divinity, is his successor. With blazing intensity and poetic brilliance, Nietzsche argues that the meaning of existence is not to be found in religious pieties or meek submission, but in an all-powerful life force.

The Wessex Novels: The First Uniform and Complete Edition. Complete in 18 Volumes Including 3 First Editions, Together With 'Poems of the Past and the Present' and 'Wessex Poems'. 20 Vols.

London: Osgood, McIlvaine & Co.. First Edition. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall Complete set of The Wessex Novels (18 vols) together with 'Wessex Poems' and 'Poems of the Past and the Present' in uniform binding of green ribbed cloth with gilt titling to spine, and gilt TH insignia to upper board. The set includes First Editions of 'Jude the Obscure' (in the first state according to Purdy 87) , 'The Well-Beloved', and 'The Changed Man', which were all first issued as part of The Wessex Novels Edition. All titles are the first Osgood printing except for 'Wessex Tales' (1896) which is in the American Harpers binding and 'A Changed Man' which is the First Edition published by Macmillan in 1913, as called for. The two volumes of poems are also First Editions which were issued in a matching format; these are the scarcest and most valuable of the titles. 'Wessex Poems' being Hardy's first volume of verse of which only 500 were printed. Osgood, McIlvaine's edition is an important one and a complete set is hard to find. "The text of every novel was thoroughly and carefully revised, the topography corrected where necessary, chapters frequently retitled, and much rewriting done. In addition, Hardy prepared a special preface for each volume and assumed the drudgery of proof-reading." (Purdy 281). Individual volumes are in good to very good condition with varying degrees of wear. 'A Changed Man' is in by far the worst condition with a split to the front joint, warped boards and severe wear to edges. Please see photos and ask for a detailed condition report if required. .

        Lorenzaccio. Théâtre de la Renaissance.

Poster for the play "Lorenzaccio", starring Sarah Bernhardt at the Theatre de la Renaissance. Paris: Champenois 1896. Published in "Les Maitres de l'Affiche", 1898. Plate no. 114.. Les Maîtres de l'Affiche (The Masters of the Poster) refers to 256 colour lithographic plates used to create a very significant art publication during the Belle Époque in Paris, France. The collection, reproduced from the original works of ninety-seven artists in a smaller format, was put together by Jules Chéret, the father of poster art.By the 1890's the streets of French cities were enlivened by large, colourful posters. The poster had not only caught the fancy of the public, but its best examples were already being regarded as true works of art (specifically, as fine prints) to be exhibited, reviewed in journals, collected and reproduced in a more manageable form. In the last five years of the 19th century, Imprimerie Chaix was to play a great part in codifying, hallowing and perpetuating the ebullient spirit of the Belle Epoque. The renowned set of 256 prints were created by Imprimerie Chaix, forever to be known as a set as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche. Each print was rendered as a separate sheet measuring 11 x 15 inches. [27.9 x 38.1 cm]. The set was compiled in a unique way: Every month for 60 months - from December 1895 through November 1900 - subscribers received a wrapper containing four consecutively numbered prints. On 16 occasions (each of the five Decembers, each of the Junes, and the March and September of the final three years) the monthly wrapper also contained a bonus plate, not a poster reproduction but a specially created lithograph. The compilation of this set of original prints makes up the complete suite known as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche

Erste Ausgabe der sechs Arbeiten Becquerels zur Entdeckung der Radioaktivität. - "In February 1896 Charles Henry reported to the Académie his discovery that phosphorescence could be induced in certian substances by exposure to sunlight. In the same month Becquerel reported that uranium was among those substances. Like all his other early papers on the subject, this appeares in the 'Comptes rendus' and was entitled 'Sur les Radiations Invisibles.'. In a second paper 'Sur quelques Propriétés Nouvelles.' he reported the astonishing fact that uranium was capable of fogging photographic plates even without previous exposure to sunlight and when the plates themselves were completely protected from ordinary light. In a third paper, March 1896, 'Sur les Radiations invisibles.' Becquerel discarded phosphorescence completely and declared that the emanations from uranium constituted an entirely new and unsuspected property of matter, which in his seventh paper he named 'radioactivité'. He also found that the uranium rays discharged a gold-leaf electroscope, which is still used as one method of detecting radio-activity" (PMM). - Das erste Blatt etwas gebräunt, sonst sauber und gut erhalten. - DSB I, 558; PMM 393; Garrison-Morton 2001 (I) [Attributes: First Edition]
