Macmillan and Co, London, 1895. First Thus. Three uniform volumes of similar size, similarly bound by the Doves Bindery, designed by Cobden-Sanderson and bound at his bindery, all signed in rear dentelles, "The Doves Bindery, 18 C-S 97." Exquisite, finely wrought in the most classic Doves Bindery style in wonderful crimson crushed morocco, with five raised bands on spine, and three of the six compartments lavishly gilt-stamped with ornate petal and leaf motif, each volume with lettering in the 2nd and 4th compartment, each with the volume number in the 3rd compartment, and the date, 1895 at the bottom. Both covers with attractive single rectilinear border, containing gilt dots along the inside edge. Gilt ruling on edges of boards. Inner dentelles with classic Doves triple filet borders and floral motifs at each corner. All edges finely gilt. Provenance: direct descent from Leonard Mouteney, through his daughter, then a collector, thence to us. Housed in linen backed felt-lined folders, fitting into exquisite box matching crimson morocco spines stretching over nearly half of boards, gilt lettering to nearly match that of the book. About as fine as one could hope for, certainly a truly representative Doves Binding on this this three-volume Matthew Arnold. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

[White, Col. Sir Godfrey Dalrymple]
[N.p: 1895]. Black ink on ruled paper, rectos only. 72 pp. 1 vols. 4to (9 x 7-3/4 in.). Detailed and interesting account by a British military officer of his hunting trip in Wyoming after elk, sheep, mountain lion, and grizzly bear, August to October 1895, with a guide named Woody whose memories stretched back to California in '49 and who told stories of the game in Yellowstone during the preceding decade. Dalrymple White was observant of landscape, weather, and the scents of the hunt, and recounts his failures as scrupulously as his successful hunts. His Wapiti, Lynx, and Big Horn are noted in Rowland Ward's Records of Big Game (1899 ed.). Godfrey Dalrymple White (1866-1954) was a career military officer, educated at Wellington College, Berks., and Sandhurst. He saw battle in the Second Boer War and in the First World War, and was later MP for Southport from 1910 to 1931. He was named baronet in 1926. A postscript dated 1949 notes that he made another sporting trip with his friend Eddy Verschoyle, after tarpon in South Florida in April 1899, and that Verschoyle, whom he had known since Wellington, was killed at Thabanchu in the Orange Free State in May 1900. Dalrymple White is the dedicatee of E.G. S. Churchill's Tarpon Fishing in Mexico & Florida (1906). Half Contemporary leather and marbled boards with matching endpapers, slight rubbing to ends and corners, with handwritten label affixed to upper cover. Red cloth clamshell box, with lether label.

[ANARCHISM] REITZEL, Robert
Robert Reitzel, 1895. Late group of issues of this prominent German-American radical literary journal. Der arme Teufel was published weekly for 14 years by Robert Reitzel, a German-born American anarchist, poet, critic and translator. The first two volumes of the journal were mainly concerned with the freethought movement, primarily consisting of articles on religious criticism; in its later years, Reitzel declared Der arme Teufel to be an anarchist publication. Reitzel was a staunch supporter of the imprisoned Haymarket anarchists, and later, of Alexander Berkman during his confinement. Indeed, Reitzel's journal was reportedly the only radical serial Berkman was allowed to receive while he was in prison. "Emma Goldman noted Reitzel's importance for facilitating American exposure to European radical thought," describing him as a "brilliant writer" and his Arme Teufel as "the one German paper in the States that kept its readers in contact with the new literary spirit in Europe" (Donaldson, Randall P. The Literary Legacy of a "Poor Devil": The Life and Work of Robert Reitzel (1849-1898) (New York: Lang, 2002), p.50-51). 22 tabloid issues (ca.36cm); printed newsprinted wrappers; 8pp per issue. Publication sequence runs as follows: Vol.XI, Nos.565-567; Vol.XII, Nos.595, 597, 599-603; Vol.XIII, Nos.631-640, 642-643. Edgeworn, with occasional creasing and short tears; quite tender at folds, with splits starting; mailing label of previous owner to front wrappers of nearly all issues (Felick Jelineck); Good overall. Also included are three issues in poor condition (nos.566-567), ba … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ellis & Elvey
London: 1895. Rossetti, William Michael (ed ). DANTE GABRIEL ROSSETTI: HIS FAMILY LETTERS WITH A MEMOIR. Two vols., 8vo cloth (disbound). London: Ellis & Elvey, 1895. First edition; 440 [xxxiv] + 436 [x] pp. + frontis portraits, and facsimile. Bindings are completely worn with covers detached. This set belonged to the famed Rossetti collector and scholar Janet Camp Troxell and was heavily used by her for 50 years, if not longer. Troxell's areas of expertise extended to the Elizabeth Siddal exhumation controversy involving Charles Augustus Howell, and the identities of Rossetti's models and the dates of his paintings. She had an extensive Victoriana collection, besides the Rossettis, including major photographers, which was purchased by Pharos Books many years ago. The volumes are heavily annotated by Troxell. Additionally, many 8vo and 4to leaves are inserted totaling about 20 pages of text. Among these is a long typed letter to "Tink", i.e. the famed Yale professor Chauncey Brewster Tinker, containing a violent excoriation of Edward Burne-Jones. She retained the original and carbon indicating that it was probably never sent. Despite the physical defects of the book, it remains a significant source for Pre-Raphaelite studies and an important collector's item. FARLEY, James Conway
Richmond, Virginia: [circa 1895]. Fine. Two very rare portrait photographs taken by James Conway Farley, now recognized as America's first prominent African-American photographer, taken at his studio in Richmond, Virginia. Both are cabinet cards in fine condition (measuring 3.25" x 5"), with blind stamped borders and the studio name printed in maroon: "Jefferson Art Gallery, 523 Broad Street, Richmond, Va." Each portrait is of the same unidentified young woman wearing a different fashionable dress and hat. She appears to be in her twenties, and possibly of mixed race. Both photographs were likely taken not long after Farley opened his studio, "The Jefferson" in 1895. A historically important, scarce survival.
