French reached Muscat, on his final missionary work, on 8 February 1891 and became the first missionary to visit the region; he had just started setting up his work there, when his health started failing, and having been cared for by Portuguese Catholics he died on 14 May 1891 in Muscat, and was buried in a Christian cemetery. There are various various references in volume two to Muscat, in particular, chapters 26 (pp.361-391) and 27 (pp.392-408) are devoted to his time in and around Muscat, with a surprising amount of correspondence considering his relatively short time there but including detailed descriptions of daily life including visits to hospitals, descriptions of Muttra etc etc. A wealth of observation and information. pp.405-408 describe his final resting place in the Christian cemetery in Muscat and the illustration shows his exact … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hough, Emerson
New York: Forest and Stream Pub. Co, 1895. First edition. First edition. Narrow 8vo, measuring 7 x 3 3/4 inches. One of the scarcest, and arguably one of the most alluring and vividly interpretive cover designs by Will Bradley, with a distinctively Nouveau and highly stylized gilt stamped design on both covers. The front cover shows the profile of a woman with long flowing hair playing a harp, with stylized trees on long trunks highlighted in the negative space behind her, consisting of gilt blocking (with reverse stippling), and on the rear cover, a delightfully playful mouse hovers over several bars of musical notation. The front cover was used in the following year in ìBradley: His Book,î vol 1, no. 2, June, 1896. There is also one tailpiece in the text (among many other line drawings) by Will Bradley, depicting a mouse sitting atop a harp playing with his hands. A fine copy of a vanishingly scarce Bradley cover, and an entirely evocative design.

Stevenson Robert Louis
New York The Merriam Company [1895]. First Edition of this famous short story, published as the second volume in Merriam's Violet Series. With four engraved illustrations on plates. Small 8vo, in the publisher's original violet cloth-covered boards, the upper cover and spine lettered and decorated in black. 61, 3 ads. A very fresh and bright copy, unusually nice and especially well preserved for this delicate little production, the violet cloth with no fading and just a touch of age evidence, the text very clean, the hinges strong and tight. A VERY BRIGHT AND FRESH FIRST EDITION COPY OF STEVENSON'S MASTERPIECE OF GRAVE-ROBBING FICTION. The work is also one of the best of his 'crawler' or horror styled stories, eclipsed only by Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Stevenson wrote the book in 1881 but set it aside for several years. It is based on the real-life case of Burke and Hare, who committed 16 murders in Edinburgh in order to sell the bodies to Robert Knox, who used them for anatomical study and teaching. The story required the talents of both Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi to bring it to film. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A.B. Paterson
Angus and Robertson, Sydney, dated 1896 but actually the October 1895 first edition, first printing, one of only 500 sent to London, with a title page dated 1896 to accord with their arrival in Britain. This copy also has a gift inscription on the half title dated 18th Nov. 1895. The first printing is identifiable by the lack of the portrait frontispiece, the gilt spine lettering and the title page font which were changed for later editions, and the lack of mention on the title page of the Preface by Rolf Boldrewood. Brown buckram, titles in gilt on the spine, top edges gilt other edges uncut. Very rare. Good plus condition, respined with matching cloth and the original spine cloth laid on, gilt titles a little rubbed, some marks to the cloth. Front inside hinge reinforced with Japanese tissue. Endpapers toned. One owner name in pencil on the ffep, two gift inscriptions on the half title, the first in ink, dated 1885 as above, the other in pencil dated 1896. Very occasional pencil marks, occasional spots, pages lightly toned, otherwise clean and tightly bound. 19.5cm (7.75 inches) tall, xvi, 184 pages. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Kipling, Rudyard
London: Macmillan, 1894, 1895. First editions. A just about Fine set of Kipling's most beloved work. Very slight wear at the spine ends, volume 2 with a touch of foxing to some of the leaves. Otherwise an exceptionally clean, bright set. Based on folk tales and legends that Kipling learned during his childhood in India but written while in Vermont. This work of several inter-related short stories met with huge success upon publication and continues to enthrall readers of all ages to this day. According to Professor Edwin L. Miller, their publication "caused even severe critics of [Kipling's] previous work to admit that he is a writer of inspired genius." Largely focused on man's relationship to nature, The Jungle Books in part narrate the tales of Mowgli, a human (man-cub) raised by wolves, as he tries to find his proper place in the world. As he struggles with his own identity, he finds allies and adversaries among the animal communities through which he travels. They also include the story of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, the heroic mongoose who would later inspire an animated short voiced by Orson Welles. For contributions like these, Kipling became the first English-language writer, and the youngest ever, to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. about Fine. about Fine.

SKLADANOWSKY, MAX
1895. Anything signed by Skladanowsky is considered rare. On the lower white margin of the post card photograph, Skladanowsky has written, "A souvenir from the inventor of motion pictures, Max Skladanowsky." Skladanowsky played an important role in the invention and early development of motion picture technology. Max and his brother Emil Skladanowsky used their bioscope camera to display the first moving picture show to a paying audience on November 1, 1895. Because this occurred just before the December 28, 1895 public debut of the Lumière Brothers' technically superior Cinématographe in Paris, Skladanowsky could make the claim that he and his brother "invented" motion pictures. However, the Lumiere brothers had held a private viewing of their camera earlier in March of the same year. Skladanowsky's trade license was eventually not renewed, and the Lumiere camera won the contest for best motion picture camera of the time. Skladanowsky's company, Projektion für Alle, produced a number of short films between 1895 to 1905. ".of the many inventors who tried to adapt the double-projection system of dissolving magic lanterns, only Skladanowsky produced a commercially used and widely seen apparatus." [see victorian cinema for skladanowsky.]. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Arthur Conan Doyle
London: George Newnes Ltd, 1895. Book is in good condition. Slight folding on the top and bottom of the spine. Pages as you would expected 124 year old book, slight discoloration but otherwise fine and front binding may need a little bit of attention. Slight foxing. This is a Cabinet Edition (first edition) published in 1895, not an actual first edition which was published in 1892. A5 size. This book is supposed to have been signed by Doyle on a handwritten letter laid into the book. However, I dont believe this is his signature but most probably his publisher or secretary. This books first Issue point without the name on the street sign in The Strand Library device on front cover and uncorrected text "cucaine" for "cocaine" on page 133. This books is bound in the ORIGINAL publisher's cloth. The bindings for this book are good (may need a little attention), the pages are clean with NO writing, marks or bookplates in the books. Overall, a fabulous books in a collector's condition.

Wells, H.G
William Heinemann, London, 1895. First English edition, first issue of Wells' groundbreaking "scientific romance"- a work generally credited with the popularization of the concept of time travel by using a vehicle that allows an operator to travel purposely and selectively forwards or backwards in time. Octavo, original cloth, front panel and spine stamped in purple with sphinx vignette. In near fine condition, bookplate. First issue with first priority sixteen-page publisher's catalogue at end. Cover artist by Ben Hardy. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. An exceptional example. In 1894 Wells "began writing what he called 'single sitting stories' using his special knowledge of science, culminating in the publication of his novella The Time Machine in 1895. It was an immediate success" (Gunn, From Gilgamesh to Wells, 337). Its earliest readers grasped its significance: as one contemporary review states, "So far as our knowledge goes [Wells] has produced that rarity which Solomon declared to be not merely rare but non-existent-a 'new thing under the sun'" (Bergonzi, 41). Important not only for establishing Wells as a popular author but also for making a "crucial breakthrough in narrative technology, providing science fiction with one of its most significant facilitating devices" (Clute & Nicholls, 1227), "it is the most important foundation stone of British scientific romance and the science fiction genre in general" (Anatomy of Wonder II-1232). Indeed, "once it was published it modified and changed English and American fiction forever. Wells had produced a signi … [Click Below for Full Description]

History Of The Fire Department Of New Orleans: From The Earliest Days To The Present Time; Including The Original Volunteer Department, The Firemen's Charitable Association, And The Present Paid Department. Various; O'Connor, Thomas[Chief Engineer of the New Orleans Fire Department](editor). New Orleans, 1895. First Edition, 4to, 565pgs., 135 illustrations, photos, ads, index., errata tipped in before index. Original red cloth, gilt design and lettering; gilt frame to upper board, spine gilt-lettered. Exhibiting general wear as is usual with this title, being a somewhat bulky production; rubbed, bumped, stained, spine sunned. Hinges starting, binding a bit shaken, would have resewn. Ownership signature of Leonard V. Huber to front-fly, dated 1931. Huber was a New Orleans historian, preservationist, and author. This copy complete with a clear and unmarked textblock; random short tear here and there to couple leaves; overall, a nice copy of this exceedingly rare title. "The history of the New Orleans Fire Department has awaited until now a suitable chronicle. The details of its rise and progress are preserved in countless records, private and official, and in the memories of men. But the records are perishable, and time is rapidly thinning the ranks of those who recall the past, as it has indeed removed nearly all who could have told of the early days of the Department. The purpose of this work is to collect from the innumerable sources in which it must be sought, and preserve in proper form and under suitable arrrangement, the story of a service as … [Click Below for Full Description]

1895. Wear to bottom and top of spine on all volumes, most notably to the bottom of volumes 3 and 6. Books hold together well, but must be held gingerly due to wear. Tear on first page of volume 6. Notable damage to inside cover and spine in volume 6. Defect in volume 2: the title page was not cut at all, as pictured. Stain on the top of the pages of volume 3. Barely noticeable from the inside of the book. This is a defect from the publisher. Damage to front cover of volume 3, some sort of water damage I believe has made the cloth rise up like a lump. That, or the damage is a defect from the publisher. Scrape on spine of volume 3. Writing in small amounts, such as 2 numbers, may be present in some volumes. This is present on the first page of volume 3. The gold lettering and trim are in very good condition. Minor wear to all corners of all volumes. Some pages are cut rather roughly, with frayed edges. This is a defect from the publisher. There are no missing pages. This listing is for a lot of three volumes of Tales from Many Sources. This is a VERY rare and hard to find book. Please note that I do NOT have volumes 1-3, but rather 2, 3, and 6. This book was published and printed by Dodd, Mead & Company of New York. Volumes 2 and 3 are from 1895, but 6 is from 1896. This lot does NOT include the full set. The full set is of 6 books, and this lot is of 3. The full lot goes for about 1500 U.S. dollars, yet I have three of the books for 600, best offer. Please read the condition description for thorough information of the condition of these books. Questions are welcomed. Please … [Click Below for Full Description]

UPTON, Florence
Longmans Green & Co, 1895. First edition. Oblong 4to. Cloth spine and paper covered boards illustrated in colour. A fine example of the first in the series of Golliwogg books, with just the tiniest rubs to the corners. Most uncommon in this condition. Colour title page and many colour plates. There are also small line drawings printed in brown on the text pages. This book plays a significant role as it sees the first appearance of a black doll called a "Golliwogg". The story revolves around 2 wooden dolls who encounter the Golly. The character of the Golliwogg was so warmly received that the future stories in this series have him as the central figure.
