John Wisden
Hi, This lot is an Original 1895 Wisden Paperback. In Very Good Condition. You do not see too many late 1890 PBs in great condition these days so it is nice to show this one off. This Wisden is very nice, 100% original the covers are tall and pretty clean, both covers have one corner that has a fold line otherwise very good. The spine paper is a bit mucky but nearly complete and tightly bound. Clean pages for the year (odd small mark) and internally a super book with an excellent photoplate.

He was in a sense an aberrant figure in the context of English Victorian art, having been trained in, and subscribing to, an academic method of work. Leighton's most remarkable paintings of the 1860s were of the so-called aesthetic type, without ostensible subject and ambiguous in the identification of the figures in anthropological, social, or even, on occasions, gender terms. This amounted to a rejection of the conventions of British art, which held that paintings should lend themselves to easy interpretation of narrative subjects, in favour of ideas about the function and purpose of art that had ci … [Click Below for Full Description]

[COPTIC TEXTILES].
Twenty-eight examples of Coptic textiles, mostly burial clothes and other textile goods taken from Egyptian graves excavated in the late 19th- and early 20th-centuries. The pictorial decoration includes human faces, full-length human figures, animals (including birds) and trees. One shows what appear to be two angels, another a figure on horseback (St Joseph? a hunter?), another possibly some sort of mythical monster. All are woven, but some include elements made with tapestry techniques and some appear to incorporate felting. The polychrome textiles show red, green, blue, yellow, orange, pink and black, in addition to the brown and ecru of most of the two-colour textiles. Some include clavi (decorative bands). The Coptic language evolved in Egypt before the spread of Christianity, but as a cultural description the word generally refers to the Christian Egyptian communities that developed in the first centuries of the Christian era. They became well established as the Eastern Roman Empire began to separate from the West around 300 AD but declined after the Islamic conquest of Byzantine Egypt in 641. While Egypt's ancient Coptic sites were studied at various times over the centuries, Albert Gayet's vast Coptic excavations (ca. 1895-1910) and his promotion of them (comparing his site to Pompei) gave new life both to scholarly studies of ancient Coptic civilization and to Coptic influence on the arts, fashion and culture of Western civilization around 1900. Like the excavations at Pompei ca. 1750 and Napoleon's Egyptian campaign ca. 1800, Gayet's excavations spoke to the imagin … [Click Below for Full Description]

Wetmore, William Boerum, Major
Mostly Denver and Boulder, Co, 1895. Thirty-one letters (approximately [160]pp.), eight telegrams, two newspaper clippings, and assorted ephemera. Housed in a modern three-ring binder, letters organized chronologically in sheet protectors. Original mailing folds, moderate toning, light soiling. Overall very good. An interesting archive of letters from Major William Boerum Wetmore (1849-1919), a prominent businessman in Colorado in the late 19th century. Major William Wetmore was a military officer educated at West Point, who served as a lieutenant at U.S. Army Forts Riley, Wallace, and Leavenworth in Kansas, and as a major in the New York State Militia. Wetmore was married to Annette Butler but divorced around 1900; they had three children. His father was Samuel Wetmore (1812-1895) and he was a descendent of Colonel Jackson Browne of the British Colonial Army and Captain William Boerum, U.S. Navy, a distinguished veteran of the War of 1812. Over the course of his life, William Wetmore resided in New York, Philadelphia, Newport, and New Jersey. He traveled often, collected coins and art, was fond of sailing yachts, and as seen in these letters, actively invested in Colorado mining ventures. The thirty-one letters are almost all multi-page efforts from Wetmore on bifolia sheets, totaling approximately 160 pages of written correspondence. All of the letters were written to Wetmore's mother Sarah Tayler (or Taylor) Wetmore, who lived in New York City. Almost all of the letters are written on "Denver Club" letterhead, as Wetmore was living at the Denver Athletic Club duri … [Click Below for Full Description]

SANDER, Henry Frederick Conrad.
London & St Albans: Henry Sotheran & Co and F. Sander & Co. 1888-94 [1895]. 4 volumes bound as 8, folio (65 x 48 cm). Nineteenth-century green half morocco, dark green cloth sides, gilt edges. The bindings scuffed with portions of the surface of the leather abraded, generally a very clean set internally, though with some minor discoloration from the mounting adhesive noticeable in the second volumes of the first series. Occasional trivial adhesion marks of the tissues to the plates, though in general this set has far less adhesion than frequently found. The first part of the first volume of the second series a little bumped with resultant creasing of corners of the mounts, with some embrittlement in that area. 192 fine chromolithographic plates, most finished by hand with gum arabic or added colour, lithographed by Joseph Mansell, G. Leutzsch and J. L. Macfarlane after Henry Moon, W. H. Fitch, A. H. Loch, and C. Storer, occasional wood-engraved illustrations throughout the text. The plates mounted on card as issued and bound on guards, each plate protected with a tissue guard. Imperial edition, copy 51 of 100 copies signed by Sander. Published during the heyday of the late Victorian orchid mania, Sander was the foremost authority on the Orchidaceae, as well as the largest grower, maintaining nurseries in England, Belgium, and the United States. He had agents gathering plants worldwide, often dangerous work, and he reports in the description of one orchid: "Orchidists are familiar with the names of Wallis, Endrès, Klaboch, Falkenberg, Schröder, Arnold, Douglas, and others, w … [Click Below for Full Description]

Powell, John Wesley
Flood & Vincent (Chatauqua-Century Press, 1895. Thomas Moran, et al. First Edition. Leather-bound. Large Quarto. (11.75" x 9"). Half-bound brown leather over textured cloth boards. Top edge gilt, with all leather junctures double-ruled in gilt. Bright gilt lettering to front board and five-hubbed spine. This particular copy was once a library copy, but has been masterfully restored to its current, near-fine state by this third-generation conservator/binder.A very few of the preliminary pages show tiny lower corner chips, and the tail (bottom edge) still tells the tale of a rough upbringing, but undeniably a gorgeous restoration of an exceedingly rare record of Western exploration. It is commonly believed that less than 100 copies of this first edition were issued. About this greatly expanded account of (the one-armed) Powell's exploratory voyage and survey along the entire length of The Colorado River, Howes (P-527, p. 465) writes: "The first complete narrative; his earlier reports were largely devoted to scientific data." 400 pp. plus advertisement at rear. 250 illustrations. though reprinted several times in the twentieth-Century, exceedingly rare in this, the first edition. Gorgeous, restored copy of an extremely rare and groundbreaking narrative of pioneer exploration. Near Fine. Powell, heretofore not much inclined to write lengthier pieces, yielded to pressure from Congressmen Garfield to complete the book-length report Explorations of the Colorado River of the West, published in 1875. When issued it included chapters by Harry Thompson, Elliott Coues, and G. Brown Good … [Click Below for Full Description]
