Minimal number markings on front first page. See photo #10. Minimal number marks on last page. See photo #9. E.F. Benson was a prolific writer of the Edwardian Era. A few highlights about E.F. Benson is that his first novel was Dodo. This book is referenced in the title page of The Judgment Books, and H.P. Lovecraft gave good reviews of Benson's novels in Supernatural Horror in Literature. One of Benson's stories was turned into an episode of The Twilight Zone in 1961. E.F. Benson was known to write humorous or satirical ghost stories. An English novelist 1867-1940. I was told by an authority that this printing probably had 200-300 books printed and is VERY RARE!

RODENBACH (George).
[Attributes: First Edition]

This is a pre-owned antique book from 1895. I believe it to be a first edition although I'm not positive. I went through all 316 pages. I did not find any writing within this book. The cover shows wear and some markings on both sides. The spine and binding are tight. So what are the imperfections? Pages 18 and 124 have a tear. See pictures. There's also some yellowing and staining of pages that are mostly outside of the margins. It does not affect the integrity of the words. Also, there are some creased corners. On the positive side, I'm honestly very surprised at the condition of this overall book. It is in very good overall condition. This is a definite "Must Have" for a collector of antiquated books. Please review all pictures carefully as part of the description. Thank you for your time.

[Click Below for Full Description]

[Western Photographica]. [Yellowstone]
[Wyoming, 1895. Very good.. Twenty-nine circular photographs measuring 3.5 inches, on card mounts 5.25 x 4.25 inches. All but eight captioned on verso in a contemporary hand. Some light wear and soiling, but most images with good contrast and clarity. Mounts with minor wear. A fine group of nearly thirty amateur photographs of late 19th-century Yellowstone, taken on a Kodak No. 2 camera. The device was one of the most popular of the early box cameras, and its use prevailed from 1889, when it was first introduced, until 1897. The camera cost $32.50, and came preloaded with sixty exposures which made circular images 3.5 inches in diameter, as here. Once used, the entire apparatus was returned to Kodak, which developed the negatives, and sent back the mounted prints. The images present here comprise a wonderful glimpse of Yellowstone at the end of the 19th century as captured by one of the early modes of popular and (relatively) affordable photography. Over two-thirds of the images are captioned in manuscript on the verso of the mount, and among these are photographs of Old Faithful, the Minerva Terraces, the Economic and Castle Geysers, Rustic Falls, several views of the Yellowstone River and Canyon, the Firehole River, and Kepler's Cascade. A further eight views of Yellowstone's geological features are uncaptioned.

RARE 19TH CENTURY MAP OF THE MALACCA STRAIT WITH KUALA LUMPUR?Malacca Strait Pulo Berhala to Cape Rachada?, engraving by Davies & Company published in London by the British Admiralty in 8 October 1895 under the superintendence of Rear Admiral Sir W.J.L. Wharton. Size: 66 x 98 cm.In 1795 King George III created the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office to provide top notch nautical charts to the vast Royal Navy. Prior to the founding of the Admiralty the surveying and creation of nautical charts was primarily a commercial venture in which the cartographer himself, more often than not, actually financed the printing of his own material. The great navigator James Cook himself is known to have scrambled for funds to publish his own seminal charts - the most important and advanced of the period. The system of privately funded nautical mapping and publishing left vast portions of the world uncharted and many excellent charts unpublished. King George III, responding to significant loss in trade revenue related to shipwrecks and delay due to poor charts, recognised the need for an institutionalised government sponsored cartographic agency - the Admiralty. The United Kingdom Hydrographic Office is still in operation today. On this rare and large 19th century nautical chart or maritime map we see the Malay Peninsula with Kuala Lumpur, its neighbouring islands and parts of Sumatra surrounded by the South China Sea and Malacca Strait.Early Kuala Lumpur was a small town that suffered from many social and political problems ? the buildings were made of wood and atap (palm frond thatching) tha … [Click Below for Full Description]

CHEKHOV, Anton Pavlovich.
Moscow: I.N. Kushnerev, , 1895. [Sakhalin Island. From Travel Notes.] Octavo. Contemporary brown quarter sheep, matching pebble-grained cloth, title gilt direct to the spine. A little rubbed, neatly rebacked with the original spine laid down, hinges repaired with linen, endpapers quite heavily browned, the text-block more lightly and variably so, very good. First edition in book form of Chekhov's firsthand investigative report on the much-contested north Pacific island. Chekhov visited Sakhalin in 1890, and his account was first published in parts between 1893 and 1894 in the popular journal 'Russkaya Mysl' [Russian Thought]. This book version includes four additional chapters, Chekhov also revised and corrected the previous published text. When Chekhov, who was already a well-known playwright, visited Sakhalin, it had been established for over 30 years as an exceptionally harsh penal colony for hardened criminals and recidivists. For three months Chekhov interviewed local settlers and convicts, producing a detailed investigation into the realities of life on the island, painting a picture of appalling social injustice secreted at the furthest limits of the Russian Empire. He portrayed a world of arbitrary floggings, defalcation of funds and the theft of supplies, and of forced prostitution, writing in anger he vainly appealed to the humanity of the government, demanding an improvement in conditions. Due to the remoteness of its location, it is doubtful whether, without Chekhov's witness, we would have any real knowledge of Sakhalin as it was in the late nineteenth ce … [Click Below for Full Description]

SMITH, Laura Grover
The Evening Wisconsin Co, 1895. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. Tall octavo. Blue cloth. Illustrated from photographs. Top of the title page is trimmed, probably to remove an owner's name, and affecting no printing, else near fine. The book, which consists mostly of portraits of American Bishops, has been used by a former owner as an autograph album, affixing the signatures of all but one of the pictured bishops, mostly with signatures cut from letters, as well as with the signatures of other bishops not pictured. Contains over 70 Signatures including Samuel D. Ferguson, the first African-American member of The House of Bishops, Missionary Bishop to Cape Palmas in Liberia, the first Liberian Episcopal Bishop, and the founder of the Cuttington Collegiate and Divinity School there; successive Presiding Bishops of the Episcopal Church of America, John Williams and Thomas March Clark; Henry Benjamin Whipple, who worked tirelessly for Native Americans; and the signature (but not portraits) of the first African-American Episcopal Bishop, James T. Holly, Bishop of Haiti. A particularly nice collection of autographs. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
