Wells, H.G.
London: William Heinemann, 1895. First U.K. edition. A Fine copy of the book with slight foxing to the end-papers, otherwise in exceptional condition overall. With the 16 page catalogue in the rear starting with "The Manxman." "With his first novel, The Time Machine, which was immediately successful, Wells began a series of science fiction novels that revealed him as a writer of marked originality and an immense fecundity of ideas" (Britannica). Setting the tone for the bulk of his career, The Time Machine reveals Wells' passionate interest in the relationship between individual men and their society, and his fascination with how science could assist or hold men back from true progress. Adapted to radio, television, and film, the novel follows the Time Traveller as he uses his machine to see the future and encounter yet-unknown societies. Fine. Fine. [Attributes: First Edition]

LORENTZ, Hendrik Antoon
E.J. Brill, Leiden, 1895. First edition, in the original printed wrappers, and very rare thus, of Lorentz's major work on the electrodynamics of moving bodies "which soon became a classic" (Schaffner, p. 503). It was in this work that he introduced the concept of 'local time', a "major discovery" (Hoffmann, p. 86), and the 'length contraction hypothesis', which together paved the way for the 'Lorentz transformations' he introduced in full in 1904. "Lorentz's great achievement [for which he won the Nobel Prize in physics in 1902] was to unite the particulate view of electricity with Maxwell's ether-borne, contiguously acting electromagnetic forces. This achievement was founded on Lorentz's novel conception of the electromagnetic ether . The ether completely permeates matter, and it is not displaced when material bodies move through it. The sole connection between ether and matter occurs through the spherical charged particles, or electrons, that are contained in ponderable molecules. The displacement of one charged particle produces a change in the state of the ether, and this change is propagated outward at the speed of light, influencing a second particle at a later time" (McCormmach, pp. 47-48). In the Versuch, "Lorentz introduced his notion of a 'local time', which he utilized to obtain a 'theorem of corresponding states.' This theorem indicates that the earth's motion through the aether will have no first-order effect whatever on experiments using terrestrial light sources" (Schaffner, p. 503), i.e., no effect if we neglect second and higher powers of v/c, where v is th … [Click Below for Full Description]

This copy is Signed by the Author on the half-title leaf. Covers moderately discoloured, and rubbed, spine darkened, head & heel os spine slightly pushed and with a trace of wear; a very good copy, quite nice and certainly much better than usually encountered. Formerly, Shiel bibliographer Reynold Morse's copy, with his "Ex-Libris RM" bookplate on the front paste-down. A cornerstone book rarely found signed or inscribed. Item #311485 ¶ Queen's Quorum No. 19. Collects three short stories featuring Prince Zaleski, a decadent occult detective inspired by Poe (through Eugene Sue). Issued in Lane's decadent Keynote's series and appropriately packaged with Beardsley's designs, Shiel's literary reputation rests firmly upon this book and Shapes in the Fire (1896), considered to be two of the most important works of the English decadent movement. Kipling, Rudyard
London: Macmillan, 1895. First editions. Near Fine. Original publisher's cloth bindings with gilt to spines and boards. All edges brightly gilt. Gently bumping to extremities. Spine of The Jungle Book the slightest bit rolled. Small cloth repair near the crown of spine on The Second Jungle Book. Dark green endpapers. Internally both copies bright and clean, with just a bit of scattered foxing to the second. An attractive pair of Kipling's most memorable works. Based on folk tales and legends that Kipling learned during his childhood in India but written while in Vermont. This work of several inter-related short stories met with huge success upon publication and continues to enthrall readers of all ages to this day. According to Professor Edwin L. Miller, their publication "caused even severe critics of [Kipling's] previous work to admit that he is a writer of inspired genius." Largely focused on man's relationship to nature, The Jungle Books in part narrate the tales of Mowgli, a human (man-cub) raised by wolves, as he tries to find his proper place in the world. As he struggles with his own identity, he finds allies and adversaries among the animal communities through which he travels. They also include the story of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, the heroic mongoose who would later inspire an animated short voiced by Orson Welles. For contributions like these, Kipling became the first English-language writer, and the youngest ever, to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. Near Fine.

Rudyard Kipling
London: Macmillan and Co. Very good to near fine. The Jungle Book and Second Jungle Book 1895 by Rudyard Kipling. The jungle Book (4th print) is in almost near fine condition. There was some tears at the beginning of the top guard page and has been rectified with glue, minimal foxing or marks on pages. Furthermore, it has a neat signature on inside blank page, nevertheless mostly clean throughout the book. Strong gold colored animal designs on cover and spine as well as the edge of pages. Slightly cocked with tight binding and strong hinges. The Second Jungle book (1st print) is in almost near fine condition. The inside blank page had some doodles on it, however, it has been erased by the previous owner. There is very minor foxing on some pages, besides that, it remains clean throughout the whole book. Again similar to the first book it is slightly cocked with tight binding, along with strong gold animal designs on cover and spine as well as the edge of pages. It consists of the large image of the King's Ankus on page 139 which authenticates a true first printing. It is slightly cocked, however, it has strong hinges and tight binding. Both books are wrapped in protective mylar covering. These books are rare in this condition and rising in value. Will ship within two days of received payment. [Attributes: First Edition]

Grasset, Eugene
Paris: G. De Malherbe, (1895). First edition. Hardcover. 32 x 24.5 cm. Series of twelve color plates, one for each month, designed by the calendar of the Parisian department store of La Belle Jardiniere., image sheet size approximately 20 x 15.2 cm. In the early 1890's Grasset began experimenting with a new form of printing called chromotypography invented by his friend, Firmin Gillot. This calendar was printed in "Gillotage," a version of chromoypographie where the plates are engraved on wood and printed on vellum. Both Arwas and Murray Robertson date this calendar to 1896, but it was offered in the May 15, 1894 issue of La Plume (which was dedicated to Grasset's work). La Plume offered the calendar for sale on vellum at 5 francs, quoting it as "extremely rare." Grasset spent approximately 20 years working for La Belle Jardinere, designing additional calendars in 1899 and 1904. GORDON RAY p.465. Grasset "developed an early version of Art Nouveau to which he subsequently remained faithful, developing it constantly until 1900." Plates loose as issued in lettered gray wrappers, separated at spine, some light marginal toning at very edges outside the image area. In fine custom gilt lettered cloth portfolio with silk ties. Item #20487. [Attributes: First Edition]
