New York: 1895. Two photographs, the first measuring about 8" x 6", the other about 9.5" x 6.5", each mounted to cardstock. The smaller one shoes mild wear to extremities of the mount, but the photograph quite well-preserved. The second has two chips at two corners, but is otherwise clean and bright. The smaller and more striking photograph depicts a group of eleven men, some in uniform, inside a trolley car, laden with pots and mans, clothing, and other evidence of having been somewhat "lived-in." Their facial expressions suggest a certain degree of boredom, and possible drunkenness. There are five inked names, some only partially legible, at the bottom edge of the mount. On the verso of the mount is written, "My father with the Seventh Regiment during a strike in N. Y." The slightly larger image is a more standard, though still somewhat informal portrait of Company K of the 7th regiment (according to contemporary pencil notations on verso). The photograph is dated February 1895, which dates it to weeks after the strike began. Based on our understanding, the trolley strike was opposed by the operating company, and they received help from the Seventh Regiment of the New York state National Guard to protect replacement workers who would agree to the company's employment terms. The strikers fought back, and there was some exchange of gunfire, but the strike ultimately failed. These photographs offer a rare glimpse into a documented pre-1900 labor strike, back when these sorts of confrontations were often violent, and workers could expect no help or protection from law enforce … [Click Below for Full Description]

San Diego Chamber of Commerce]
Gould, Hutton & Co., San Diego, 1895. [4],62pp., including double-page map, plus eleven leaves of illustrations (printed on both sides of the sheet). Original pictorial wrappers. Wrappers chipped around edges, rubbed and soiled, otherwise a very good copy, quite clean and neat internally. An early and thorough promotional for San Diego, prepared by the Chamber of Commerce. The volume touts San Diego to a wide audience - those seeking to get rich, to move to a more hospitable and healthful climate, and those interested in just visiting. The map shows the region from the Mexican border to just north of Oceanside and there are advertisements for a wide variety of local businesses. The text emphasizes the agricultural and commercial potential of the region, and touts the harbor as a port for trade. ROCQ 7831.

WOMEN'S HISTORY & LITERATURE - SUFFRAGE] STANTON, Elizabeth
New York: December 8th, [1895?]. Brief but significant missive addressed to Parker Pillsbury, the American minister and women's suffrage advocate, regarding a copy of Stanton's "Woman's Bible" she had just sent him. "I wonder if I could interest them [a "Mrs. White" and one other] sufficiently in the Woman's Bible to sell ten or twenty copies in there [sic] respective woman's clubs? It is published at my expense, hence I am trying to push its circulation." The controversial "Woman's Bible," a series of commentaries pertaining to the portions of the Bible relating to women, was published in two parts, in 1895 and 1898, and composed almost entirely by Stanton alone, her committee of Bible revisors finding the project too controversial and harmful to the cause of women's suffrage. Clearly at the time of writing this letter the book was still meeting with resistance (thus our placing the date at around 1895), Stanton turning to Pillsbury as a potential source of influential and wealthy patrons (she inquires "Is Mrs. White still living & working? Is that rich woman that Mr. [illegible] used to visit in Maine living?"). But by 1897 the book had become a best seller, though many of the members of the women's suffrage movement would continue to distance themselves from it. This letter quite significant as a testimony to the aging Stanton, organizer of the historical 1848 Seneca Falls Convention, and her continuing indefatigable efforts, and initial lack of support, in getting this work circulated. Original 1895 11-Volume Set Minutes Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania Masonic History Original 1895 (124 years ago) 11-Volume Set from the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania - Each volume has well over 500 pages of Pennsylvania Freemasonry History! The official title is: "Reprint of the Minutes of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Pennsylvania" While it says "Reprint" - this is not to be confused with the actual reprints available on Amazon and such today - this is the real deal! "Reprint" references the re-transcribing of records going back to 1779. This complete set was published in 1895 (124 years ago) and chronicles Pennsylvania Masonry from a period of 1779 through 1874. The Set was apparently originally issued to Charity Lodge No. 190 in Norristown, Pennsylvania which is still in existence. Some of the gilded lettering is fading from the first couple volumes but otherwise in great condition for something of this timeframe. I acquired the collection from an estate sale in Arizona so the books have "done some traveling..." I paid a lot of money to rescue the collection so please don't beat me up on the price. _gsrx_vers_854 (GS 7.0.18 (854)).

Rudyard Kipling
London: Macmillan and Co, 1895. Rudyard Kipling's Jungle books first editions in very good condition. The Jungle Book has a neat inscription on the inside blank page. The pages are clean throughout the book. It has a small bit of faded color at the tips of the corners. The second Jungle Book is slightly cocked and has small amount of fade at the tips of the corners. The first inside blank page has had doodles inscribed, however, it appears that it has been rubbed out with an eraser and a few spots of foxing on the blank pages. Furthermore, the inside front paper cover was torn, fortunately it has been rectified by the previous owner. Again like the first book it has clean pages throughout the whole book. It consists of the large ankus illustration on page 139 as well as the advertisements at the end pages that authenticates the true first printing in November 1895. Will ship within two days after cleared payment. Happy to show more photos and answer any questions. [Attributes: First Edition]

MORRIS, William.
[Birmingham: Printed at the Press of the Birmingham Guild of Handicraft Ltd, 1895. No.37 of 50 copies. Wood engraving of Kelmscott Manor by C.M. Gere as the frontispiece (originally used in the Kelmscott Press News from Nowhere) and two other wood engravings by Edmund New, woodcut initials. Pp. ii, 14. 4to., original blue boards iwth title printed in black on the upper cover, in plain paper dust jacket with manuscript title date and edition number on the upper cover. A very good copy with the booklabel of Freeman Bass, the co-founder of the Morris Society. Some browning to free endpapers which seems to verify that the plain jacket was present when the book was issued. Deemed to be a form of piracy by Buxton Forman, the forger, it is conjectured that this book was directly extracted from the 50 copies of The Quest No. IV where the text was published first and dressed up in a new binding with an added colophon which read "Printed at the press of the Birmingham Guild of Handicraft Limited, published in "The Quest" for November MDCCCXCV, and fifty copie sdone in this separate form." It is pretty obvious when one looks at the difference between the text and printing and typography of the half title and colophon. In his Morris bibliography Buxton Forman justifies the book referring to it as a 'choice littel book, of the same typography as the magazine'. On the plus side we now know that we are getting the first printing of Morris's words rather than an offprint in the second printing. .

UPTON, Florence K. & Bertha.
London and New York Longmans Green & Co, 1895. First edition; oblong 4to; 32 full-page, colour illustrations, numerous sepia decorations within text; publisher's quarter cloth over colour-illustrated boards, near-contemporary ink ownership to front free endpaper, mild rubbing to extremities, some very mild age-creasing to paper covering boards, otherwise exceptionally clean and original, extremely scarce thus. UPTON The author, Florence Kate Upton (1873-1922), an American-born English cartoonist was best known for her Golliwogg series. The Golliwogg character was inspired by an old children's toy found by Upton and this title is his first appearance before becoming the dominant character in subsequent titles. For the past few decades the Golliwogg series were at the heart of the debate about whether the main character is a lovable icon or a racist symbol. In the 1960s' inter-racial tensions climate many Golliwogg books were withdrawn from public libraries, many Golliwogg images were destroyed and the manufacturing of Golliwogg dolls dwindled. RIMBAUD Arthur
1895. Two portraits by Paul Verlaine. 8vo (185 x 117mm.) xxiv, 135p. Half morocco, original wrappers and spine bound in at rear. Paris [Evreux printed by Charles Hérissey]: L. Vanier, 1895. First edition, ?sur papier d?édition? (trade issue, after 25 numbered copies on hollande paper). The volume includes his poem ?Le bateau ivre? but ?Les illuminations? and ?Une saison en Enfer? had been separately published. Rimbaud died on 10 November 1891 in Marseille after his sojourn in Abyssinia. As is well known Verlaine and Rimbaud had had a spectacular affair which had left Rimbaud wounded and Verlaine in prison, but it was Verlaine (1844-1896) who outlived by five years the young poet. In his preface Verlaine pays tribute to both the poems and the prose writings (some are included in this volume), and justifies some of Rimbaud?s more extreme actions and verses. The short bibliographical essay which precedes the poems is by the publisher Léon Vanier. He too was the subject of an essay by Verlaine who said he began as a bookseller 'où il apprit à connaître intrinsèquement la bizarre marchandise dont il devait faire part à ses contemporains en qualité d?éditeur à la mode, érudit et littéraire, connaisseur et amateur, collectionneur même, d?ailleurs aimable touj … [Click Below for Full Description]

Kipling, Rudyard
London: Macmillan and Co., 1894, 1895. Two volumes. First editions, first printings. The Jungle Book (1894) is illustrated by John Lockwood Kipling, William Henry Drake, and Paul Frenzeny. The Second Jungle Book (1895) is illustrated by John Lockwood Kipling. Both volumes bound in the original publisher's navy cloth, spines lettered in gilt, pictorial jungle images based on artwork by the author's father John Lockwood Kipling stamped to the front boards in gilt, all edges gilt, green coated endpapers. Both volumes near fine with some a touch of wear to the spine ends, faint scattered foxing to some of the margins, small former owner signature to front blanks, else very clean. Overall, an excellent set with bright gilt designs. The Jungle Books are collections of short stories and verses, the most famous of which relate to the feral child protagonist Mowgli, a "man cub." While they can be read independently of each other, each chapter serves as a fable using animal figures to provide a moral lesson. In each volume, the short stories are both preceded and followed by poems or songs, including the notable "Mowgli's Song" and "The Law of the Jungle." The Jungle Books, based on the author's childhood and later work experience in British India, are indicative of Western Orientalist ideology at the turn of the 20th century, which is somewhat softened by Kipling's fondness for his former home. Both Jungle Books are illustrated by the author's father, John Lockwood Kipling, who was a practicing illustrator and art professor in Bombay. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

TOLSTOY, Leo
I.D. Sytin for Posrednik, Moscow, 1895. The first edition of one of Tolstoy’s greatest and most popular short stories, with the original wrappers. This copy bears the correct first issue points: the printed wrapper is priced 20 kopeks, and the text shows the printed censorship date of 17 February 1895. Master and Man proved hugely popular, selling 15,000 copies within four days of its publication on 05 March 1895. To meet demand, Posrednik – Tolstoy’s own publishing house – issued another edition on 09 March, priced at 3 kopeks. Master and Man reflect aspects of Tolstoy’s own spiritual conversion, and is sometimes seen as a companion piece to Death of Ivan Ilyich (1886). Twelvemo (198 x 131mm). (Occasional faint marginal soiling.) 20thcentury red quarter morocco preserving the original wrappers and spine, these printed in red and black on cream paper (wrapper spine worn, light wear to the covers). Provenance: Prochian (bookplate). Eden Martin, prominent American collector. 20thcentury red quarter morocco [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Most of them are historical romances set in the Yorkshire Dales, and many of them romanticize the Stuarts, especially Bonnie Prince Charlie. Sutcliffe's father was headmaster of Bingley Grammar School from 1873 to 1901, and Sutcliffe was educated there and at King's College, Cambridge. In 1904 he married Mabel Cottrell of Twickenham, and they lived first at Embsay near Skipton, where their elder son Derek was born in 1905. After eighteen months in Embsay, they moved to Linton on the banks of the Wharfe, and here their younger son Noel was born in 1906. Their house was called Troutbeck, but about 1913 Sutcliffe renamed it White Abbey, believing that it had once been a grange of Fountains Abbey. It was here that Halliwell Sutcliffe died in January 1932, aged 61. Mabel Sutcliffe stayed in the house until 1950, when she moved to London to live with her unmarried sisters. Grasset, Eugene
Paris: G. De Malherbe, (1895). First edition. Hardcover. 32 x 24.5 cm. Series of twelve color plates, one for each month, designed by the calendar of the Parisian department store of La Belle Jardiniere., image sheet size approximately 20 x 15.2 cm. In the early 1890's Grasset began experimenting with a new form of printing called chromotypography invented by his friend, Firmin Gillot. This calendar was printed in "Gillotage," a version of chromoypographie where the plates are engraved on wood and printed on vellum. Both Arwas and Murray Robertson date this calendar to 1896, but it was offered in the May 15, 1894 issue of La Plume (which was dedicated to Grasset's work). La Plume offered the calendar for sale on vellum at 5 francs, quoting it as "extremely rare." Grasset spent approximately 20 years working for La Belle Jardinere, designing additional calendars in 1899 and 1904. GORDON RAY p.465. Grasset "developed an early version of Art Nouveau to which he subsequently remained faithful, developing it constantly until 1900." Plates loose as issued in lettered gray wrappers, separated at spine, some light marginal toning at very edges outside the image area. In fine custom gilt lettered cloth portfolio with silk ties.
