When John Lane was searching for new lodgings, Dr Pritchard offered him a room to rent above his surgery at ten shillings a week: "When, years afterwards, he [Lane] had become a successful publisher... he was still paying Pritchard ten shillings a week! Pritchard was a generous, large-hearted man. He would not put the rent up on a friend" (May, p. 29). After John Lane passed away, his nephews, Allen, Richard, and John, moved into the lodgings above Dr Pritchard's surgery. The Lane brothers would go on to co-found Penguin Books in 1935. H. G. Wells - The Time Machine - New York: Henry Holt, 1895. First edition, first issue of the author's first novel. Precedes the English edition by several months and with textual differences. Previous owner bookplate to front pastedown. Internally quite clean and tidy other than a few dirt blotches on the tops of pages Hinges intact and tight. A remarkable work, and necessary reading" (Bleiler, Science-Fiction 2325). Currey, p.524. Comes in a custom purple clamshell case for preservation. Please see the other first editions I have listed. Jonathan Hutchinson, LL.D., F.R.S., CONSULTING SURGEON TO THE LONDON HOSPITAL, AND LATE PRESIDENT OF THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF SURGEONS. London: WEST, NEWMAN & CO., 1895. Sir Jonathan Hutchinson (1828-1913), was an English surgeon, opthalmologist, dermatologist, venereologist, and pathologist. He was the first physician to describe Progeria [Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome], and is considered by some the father of oral medicine. This volume is a continuation of a larger atlas, "Illustrations of Clinical Surgery," the publication of which extended from 1875 to 1882. "I am a firm believer in the value of pictorial illustration as an aid to the acquisition of clinical knowledge, and my aim has been to produce a volume which should place such assistance within reach of all. In this endeavour I have been loyally helped by my publishers and artists. This 'Smaller Atlas' may be regarded as a continuation of the 'Clinical Illustrations,' for it deals with similar subjects, and none of the Plates in the former have been reproduced. The principle selection has been the same in both works. I have taken what int … [Click Below for Full Description]

Small portion of lower corner of front wrap chipped away. Light wear and minor soiling. Text evenly tanned, faint occasional foxing in map margins. Rudyard Kipling
London: Macmillan and Co. The Jungle Book and Second Jungle Book 1895 by Rudyard Kipling. The jungle Book (4th print) is in very good condition. There was some tears at the beginning of the top guard page and has been rectified with glue, minimal foxing or marks on pages. Furthermore, it has a neat signature on inside blank page, nevertheless mostly clean throughout the book. Strong gold colored animal designs on cover and spine as well as the edge of pages. Slightly cocked with tight binding and strong hinges. The Second Jungle book (1st print) is also in very good condition. The inside blank page had some doodles on it, however, it has been erased by the previous owner. There is very minor foxing on some pages, besides that, it remains clean throughout the whole book. Again similar to the first book it is slightly cocked with tight binding, along with strong gold animal designs on cover and spine as well as the edge of pages. It consists of the large image of the King's Ankus on page 139 which authenticates a true first printing. It is slightly cocked, however, it has strong hinges and tight binding. Both books are wrapped in protective mylar covering. These books are rare and rising in value. I believe another jungle Book movie adaption of the book maybe considered by Disney in 2020. I'm selling due to financial difficulties. Will ship within two days of received payment by way of registered post. This will include tracking and the requirement of a signature. The Keynotes series shared a close relationship with the progressive literary trends of 1890s, emphasised by Beardsley's fashionable cover designs. Prince Zaleski was Shiel's first novel contains three mysteries: "The Race of Orven", "The Stone of the Edmundsbury Monks", and "The S.S.", each solved by an eccentric Russian nobleman who lives out his self-imposed exile within the half-ruined walls of a Welsh abbey. Hardy, Thomas
London: Osgood, McIlvaine, 1895. Hardy, Thomas. THE WESSEX NOVELS. [Complete In XVIII Volumes]. London: Osgood, McIlvaine & Co., 1895-1913. First Uniform and Complete Edition of Hardy's prose. All eighteen volumes uncut and uniform in original publisher's dark green cloth; gilt monogram on front boards, t.e.g. An etched frontispiece in each volume by H. Macbeth-Raeburn. Blind-stamp reading "W. E. CASE, STATIONERS, DORCHESTER" on the front-free endpaper of seven of the titles. This run of perfectly matched bright unrubbed copies (just a few stray scrapes), a REMARKABLY FINE SET, appears to have been put together by the same individual during the 1890's (while Hardy was living just down the road at Max Gate). This is the FIRST TRUE COLLECTED EDITION of Hardy's works and it contains three first editions: JUDE THE OBSCURE (found here with all first issue points), THE WELL-BELOVED, and A CHANGED MAN. This edition is of further importance as every novel, for the first time, had been extensively revised by the author who also provided each with a new and important preface. Initially published in the I-XVI volume Wessex Novels, 1895-96, THE WELL-BELOVED (Osgood, McIlvaine, 1897) and A CHANGED MAN (Macmillan, 1913) followed on in identical format as volumes XVII and XVIII.While the easily found Macmillan 1912-1914 WESSEX EDITION is generally lauded as the first collected writings with the text exactly as Hardy wanted it for posterity, and Macmillan's MELLSTOCK EDITION of 1919-1920 is deservedly praised for its glamorous and lush 37-volume signed limited edition, the Osgoo … [Click Below for Full Description]

Octavo, original yellow cloth, stamped in silver and green, illustrated with plates from photographs, including frontispiece with tissue-guard present, wood engravings and tables.
Typical of the Keynotes novels' socialist themes and exploration of marriage and female emancipation, the novel is a radical "attack on the church's hypocrisy about sexual relationships with a defense of a young woman's right to be independent of her parents' selfish demands" (Harris, p. 1409).
