Manuel José Duarte Valdez
La Plata Buenos Aires, 1895. In-8. Notebook with 74 manuscript pages in sepia ink with the meteorological notes of the journey undertaken from La Plata to Bahia Blanca in 1895. Duarte received a naval officer in 1894, and as Paraguay lacked a navy, he served, with his comrade Elías Ayala acted in the Argentine Navy, where, with the rank of frigate lieutenant, he performed important functions, including the Secretary of the Navy Arsenal and the corresponding naval zone command. Duarte, like many of his generation, was no stranger to the political hustle and bustle of his time. In that sense, he had active participation in the conspiracy works of 1904 against the Colorado regime. Parallel to a Revolutionary Committee installed in Asunción with figures such as Cecilio Báez, Emiliano González Navero, Emilio Aceval, Guillermo de los Ríos and Francisco Campos, in Buenos Aires another Revolutionary Committee was integrated, in which we find Manuel Duarte, integrating the same, together with Domingo García Torres and Elías García, who had the mission of acquiring supplies and ammunition necessary for the planned revolt with the purpose of overthrowing the government of Colonel Juan Antonio Escurra. This Buenos Aires committee was also entrusted with the mission of preparing a naval expedition that, starting from the Río de la Plata, had to arrive in Asunción, without being noticed by the authorities, to operate a combined coup of water and earth. Liberalism by Major Eduardo Vera himself, martyr of the failed revolution of October 17, 1891. Years later, in the rise of the Paraguayan … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pal
1895. This poster features an elegantly dressed French lady carrying a basket full of fruits. While the artist used painterly strokes for her dress, the fruits and vegetables were carefully portrayed to capture all the details to create a colorful and delicious graphic. As the text reminds us, this poster was created to promote the Western railway in conjunction with Brighton Rail to deliver produce from Paris a Londres, or Paris to London . The train departed from St Lazare Station in Paris and went through Rouen, Dieppe, and Newhaven. It made speedy special daily service possible, delivering fresh fruits and flowers daily to London as well as passengers. The rapid service line reveals the advancement of the technology at the time, as well as the modern lifestyle that was not conceivable before. Jean de Paleologue (1855-1942), better known as PAL, was a Romanian born poster artist, painter, and illustrator active in France during the late nineteenth century. He produced many elegant posters featuring beautiful women. He created posters for all the popular brands of the time including Clement Cycles and many posters for liquor and entertainment venues that are still desired by collectors today. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.

Gibson, Charles DeWolf
1895. Quarto carbon typescript 8½" x 11", bound in green cloth with title and small sailboat vignette stamped in gilt on the upper cover; dedication page with a mounted photograph of the skipper, Alger Shelden; 21 numbered pages plus 7 pages with 22 original photographs mounted in photo corners, most of the Urchin and its crew, many with hand written captions identifying the people. One additional crew photo laid in. Light soiling to the front board, one tear in cloth at spine; overall very good. The Port Huron to Mackinac Race, now called the Bayview Mackinac Race is one of the longest freshwater races in the world and now has more than 200 entrants each year. This log is from the third year of the race in which just 15 yachts participated. The Urchin, owned by Alger Shelden, had run in the previous two races with many of the same crew members. The log itself takes up 11 pages detailing the start of the race, shifts in wind and weather, related sailing strategies, and a bit about the moods and meals of the crew. This is followed by a bogus newspaper account ostensibly written by a Swedish crewmember and which purportedly appeared in the Swedish press (here translated from the "Nordic"). This provides a short but lively sketch of each crew member recounting both their strengths as yachtsmen and their personal quirks. There is also a one-page verse, "The Song of the Urchin," written to commemorate the race - apparently a race tradition. The Urchin finished eighth, but they seem to have had a fine time, nonetheless. The compiler of the log, Charles DeWolf Gibson, was the neph … [Click Below for Full Description]

Kipling, Rudyard
Macmillan, London, 1895. Original publisher's cloth bindings with gilt to spines and boards. All edges brightly gilt. Gently bumping to extremities. Spine of The Jungle Book the slightest bit rolled. Small cloth repair near the crown of spine on The Second Jungle Book. Dark green endpapers. Internally both copies bright and clean, with just a bit of scattered foxing to the second. An attractive pair of Kipling's most memorable works. Based on folk tales and legends that Kipling learned during his childhood in India but written while in Vermont. This work of several inter-related short stories met with huge success upon publication and continues to enthrall readers of all ages to this day. According to Professor Edwin L. Miller, their publication "caused even severe critics of [Kipling's] previous work to admit that he is a writer of inspired genius." Largely focused on man's relationship to nature, The Jungle Books in part narrate the tales of Mowgli, a human (man-cub) raised by wolves, as he tries to find his proper place in the world. As he struggles with his own identity, he finds allies and adversaries among the animal communities through which he travels. They also include the story of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, the heroic mongoose who would later inspire an animated short voiced by Orson Welles. For contributions like these, Kipling became the first English-language writer, and the youngest ever, to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. Near Fine. [Attributes: First Edition]

Pascoli, Giovanni
Coi Tipi di Raff. Giusti, 1895. Rara edizione originale. [Click Below for Full Description]
