Verne, Jules
Les Jouets et Jeux Français, Paris, 1895. A board game for up to six players, following the eighty-day journey of Phileas Phogg across the globe. Each day is represented by a square on the board, centering around a globe. Some squares show notable characters, such as Phogg, Francis Cromarty, and Miss Aouda, while others show ships, animals, and landmarks from destinations as far as Calcutta, Hong Kong, and San Francisco. Some squares have particular associated functions, which are outlined in the rules on the underside of the box lid. The course of play proceeds through a series of transactions using the fifteen tokens provided, with one player acting as Phogg's valet, Passepartout, who takes on the role of banker. The tokens are housed in a cloth bag. Six painted metal figures act as gamepieces, housed in a smaller box, with splits to corners of lid. Paper cup holding two dice, along with tokens and game pieces, contained in separate compartments in the box. Some soiling to back of game board. All elements stored in box with lush pictorial lid, some signs of repair, else a near fine and remarkably intact set. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

WELLS, H. G.
London: Methuen & Co., 1895. 8vo., original blue cloth with gilt lettering and decorative design in gilt to upper cover and spine; preserved in a custom-made fall-down-back box; pp. [xii], 275, [i], 32 [advertisements, dated September 1895]; binding a little rubbed to spine edges with head and foot pushed; ever-so-slight lean; corners lightly rubbed and bumped; previous ownership bookplate to ffep and sporadic foxing to prelims; p. 9/10 lightly detached by a few centimetres to internal hinge; still a very internally clean copy. First edition of Wells second science fiction work, and his first collection of short stories. With an autograph card initialled from the author to Frazier Hunt tipped on to front paste down. Containing, among others, The Flowering of the Strange Orchid (presumably influencing the cover image); The Triumphs of a Taxidermist; The Flying Man and The Remarkable Case of Davidson's Eyes. The title story covers great ground, switching from bioterrorism to comedy car chases, and a virus which turns skin blue. There are also cases involving swallowed diamonds, Ostrich auctions, and large bat-like creatures. The devil even features, at one point. Most of the stories had already been printed, in The Pall Mall Budget, The Pall Mall Gazette and St James's Gazette, but were brought together for the first time in this volume. Boston and Worchester, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire, 1895. Oblong quarto. Thick red cloth beveled boards with "Photographs" in silver on front board. Commercially produced with title page reading: "The Art Album for 96 'Bullet' Photographs". Contains 95 sepia-toned gelatin silver prints in the sleeves provided (and one apparently commercially printed, probably collotype, image). Each image is 3.25" x 3.25" and have either mat or glossy finishes. Most are probably Kodak images. Some minimal captioning, mostly with place names. Hinges cracked, with some loose or detached leaves, very good. Some images with fading, overall the images are near fine. A pleasing if somewhat prosaic album of both outside locations and interior domestic images. Among the images are fashionably dressed women at lake side, several boat images: both small steamboats and handsome sailing vessels, and one of a lighthouse. Also many farm images: haywagons, silos, chickens in the barnyard, and a buckboard wagon. Several images of downtown Worchester, Massachusetts, including the train station and a train, the Oddfellows Hall, and several other downtown buildings. Another section features domestic interior images both with and without people posed in them: with an organ, a typewriter on a desk, and a large stove evident. Later are images of Boston: B.F. Kieth's Opera House, Fenuil Hall, Boston Commons, and other buildings. These are followed by some vacation shots in New Hampshire, including one of the Alpine House in Berlin, N.H.,and it ends up with a few images of women clowning around dressed as men … [Click Below for Full Description]

John Uri Lloyd
Cincinatti: John Uri Lloyd, 1895. See photos & item description for condition details. Up for sale is a rare 1st Edition (Author's Edition) of "Etidorhpa: The End of Earth" by John Uri Lloyd. Lloyd personally published this edition and sent copies to a select group of people, one of which was the original owner of this copy: Alex Hill. Included in the rear of the book's pages is a list of the recipients of the signed author's edition. In this copy, Lloyd personally inscribed this to Alex Hill whose name is on the list of recipients in the back of the book. The cover boards show minor edge wear as well as fraying on the extremities of the spine. There are three small white marks on the back cover board. The back cover board also has an area of fading where it looks as if the book had been lying face down with another book lying on it causing the top edge and a sliver of the side to have sun fading. There are slight bumps on both the front and back cover boards that could possibly have been from water damage but not severe water damage since the inside of the book does not show signs of it. The front pastedown has a small part in the upper left corner where it looks as if a sticker was removed. The binding of the book is slightly loose but still intact. The photos should show the binding issues. There are small tears to the edges of the title page. Please review all photos carefully before purchasing, and feel free to ask questions. Also, be sure to check out our other listings! [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

MATHER, John A.
Titusville, Pennsylvania: John. A. Mather, 1895. Oblong small folio. (10 x 13 1/4 inches). Letterpress title, 2 preliminary leaves of text. 12 photographs, printing-out paper prints, each linen backed as issued, with Mather's caption in the negative. Publisher's dark blue cloth, covers bordered in blind, upper covers lettered in gilt.Important photographic record of the early days of the U.S. Petroleum Industry. The work was made and published by the pioneer photographer of the Pennsylvania oil fields, John A. Mather. The first oil well in the United States was drilled by E. L. Drake in Oil Creek, Pennsylvania, near Titusville, in 1859. On the 29th of August oil was struck. John A. Mather, a recent English immigrant and aspiring photographer, heard of Drake's discovery and the ensuing oil rush, and moved to Titusville in October 1860. He set up a gallery, built a floating photo studio and over the next forty years compiled an exhaustive photographic record of the growth of the oil industry. Mather's photographs rarely turn up in the marketplace. The photographs in the present work were printed in 1895 from earlier negatives. Most photographs are identified and dated in the negative. Mather's photographs serve up a visual narrative of this transitional period, documenting the rapid growth of the region from 1864-1880s, when it emerged as the first site of substantial oil wealth in the United States. Mr. Drake is shown along with his first oil well. Mather also depicts the early days of Titusville. The Oil Exchange Hotel is set amidst rolling hills marked with numerous erect … [Click Below for Full Description]

RARE 19TH CENTURY MAP OF THE MALACCA STRAIT WITH KUALA LUMPUR?Malacca Strait Pulo Berhala to Cape Rachada?, engraving by Davies & Company published in London by the British Admiralty in 8 October 1895 under the superintendence of Rear Admiral Sir W.J.L. Wharton. Size: 66 x 98 cm.In 1795 King George III created the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office to provide top notch nautical charts to the vast Royal Navy. Prior to the founding of the Admiralty the surveying and creation of nautical charts was primarily a commercial venture in which the cartographer himself, more often than not, actually financed the printing of his own material. The great navigator James Cook himself is known to have scrambled for funds to publish his own seminal charts - the most important and advanced of the period. The system of privately funded nautical mapping and publishing left vast portions of the world uncharted and many excellent charts unpublished. King George III, responding to significant loss in trade revenue related to shipwrecks and delay due to poor charts, recognised the need for an institutionalised government sponsored cartographic agency - the Admiralty. The United Kingdom Hydrographic Office is still in operation today. On this rare and large 19th century nautical chart or maritime map we see the Malay Peninsula with Kuala Lumpur, its neighbouring islands and parts of Sumatra surrounded by the South China Sea and Malacca Strait.Early Kuala Lumpur was a small town that suffered from many social and political problems ? the buildings were made of wood and atap (palm frond thatching) tha … [Click Below for Full Description]
