Berlin, 30. IV, 1895. 1? SS. auf Doppelblatt. 8vo. 7 Uhr 54 in Weimar an. Item #037990 Most of the photographs in this album. circa 1895-1925, were taken in Mie-Ken (or "Mie prefecture"), part of the Kansai region on the main island of Honshu. The group and individual portraits reflect new social and economic developments and cultural norms that emerged during this period. Subjects are shown in either traditional Japanese garments or in Western dress. Group shots often depict people wearing both styles within the same picture. There are many group shots of schoolchildren of both sexes, young people in uniforms posed before buildings with Japanese signs on them, as well as many formal group shots of families, some "nuclear"-husband, wife, children- others extended by relatives. Individual shots of young children show them almost invariably in western dress, one posed with his tricycle, young boys in uniform, a young girl in kimono showing a dance move while holding a fan, infants in traditional robes, and young men in business suits. John Wesley Powell
Meadville, Pennsylvania: Flood & Vincent Chatauqua-Century Press, 1895. Condition: Near Fine. Large Quarto. (11.75" x 9"). Half-bound brown leather over textured cloth boards. Top edge gilt, with all leather junctures double-ruled in gilt. Bright gilt lettering to front board and five-hubbed spine. This particular copy was once a library copy, but has been masterfully restored to its current, near-fine state by this third-generation conservator/binder.A very few of the preliminary pages show tiny lower corner chips, and the tail (bottom edge) still tells the tale of a rough upbringing, but undeniably a gorgeous restoration of an exceedingly rare record of Western exploration. It is commonly believed that less than 100 copies of this first edition were issued. About this greatly expanded account of (the one-armed) Powell's exploratory voyage and survey along the entire length of The Colorado River, Howes (P-527, p. 465) writes: "The first complete narrative; his earlier reports were largely devoted to scientific data." 400 pp. plus advertisement at rear. 250 illustrations. though reprinted several times in the twentieth-Century, exceedingly rare in this, the first edition. Gorgeous, restored copy of an extremely rare and groundbreaking narrative of pioneer exploration. Powell, heretofore not much inclined to write lengthier pieces, yielded to pressure from Congressmen Garfield to complete the book-length report Explorations of the Colorado River of the West, published in 1875. When issued it included chapters by Harry Thompson, Elliott Coues, and G. Brown Goode, and as well i … [Click Below for Full Description]

He was in a sense an aberrant figure in the context of English Victorian art, having been trained in, and subscribing to, an academic method of work. Leighton's most remarkable paintings of the 1860s were of the so-called aesthetic type, without ostensible subject and ambiguous in the identification of the figures in anthropological, social, or even, on occasions, gender terms. This amounted to a rejection of the conventions of British art, which held that paintings should lend themselves to easy interpretation of narrative subjects, in favour of ideas about the func … [Click Below for Full Description]

Wallace, James R

Calcutta: Office of the Indian Medical Record, 1895. "Reprinted after revision from the Indian Medical Record". Original publisher's green printed wrappers.. Very good; vertical fold; some minor spotting.. 8vo, [4], 51, [1] pp.

Trained in Ireland, Wallace (1856-1903) was editor of the Indian Medical Record, and at the time of the Commission had been practising medicine in India since 1872, most of that time in private practice in Calcutta. A witness to the Commission, Wallace gave strong evidence debunking the idea of the efficacy of opium as a prophylactic against malaria; "His experience in the eastern part of the country, especially Calcutta, convinced him the two capabilities were distinct; pain relief simply was not another way of referring to disease prevention" (Winther, Anglo-European Science and the Rhetoric of Empire, p. 165); and in the present publication presents persuasive arguments from the Commission's other witnesses against "the theory of 'profound constitutional difference' or 'exceptional tolerance' in the adult natives of India and their children [which] is omnipresent in Sir William's Memorandum". The overall perception arising from the report was that the "consequences of opium consumption in India were not that different (or even perhaps less severe) than the serious alcohol problem faced by the UK at the same time" (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Century of International Drug Control, p. 30), ignoring the problem in China, and effectively undermining the work of the anti-opium campaigners.

1895. New York: Richter, F. Ad. & Co.. This is an attractive set of Richter's Anchor Blocks housed in a wooden box with original color labels. Also includes 3 instruction booklets (No. 2, Nr. 4, No. 6) with color illustrations; two of these booklets are in English and German, and the other has text in German, Dutch and French. Set is in good condition with moderate wear to box and moderate chipping to labels, bottom of box has a crack and is fragile; booklets and figures have light soiling and minor creasing. An inventive and fun architecture set, Richter's Anchor Blocks were very popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Anchor building stones were made famous after savvy businessman, Friedrich A. Richter, acquired the rights and manufacturing technique from Otto and Gustav Lilienthal, inventors of the blocks. Richter developed a series of sets with a various number of heavy stone blocks, each set including design books, a ground plan and sheets of paper figures. In 1895 he trademarked the design as "Richter's Anchor Stone Building Sets" or "Richters Anker Steinbaukasten." By using exhibition models to gather awards at architectural shows, providing glowing customer reviews, and marketing not only to children, but … [Click Below for Full Description]

Wilde, Oscar
London: Privately Printed, 1895. First edition. Very Good. First appearance in book form, one of only 50 copies printed. Original brown paper wraps, with some chipping to eddges. Rebacked with new paper spine. Pencil ownership signature of Eva Fowler to half title. Collates [iv], 97, [1]: complete, with woodcut head and tail pieces and initial. In all, a clean, tight, pleasing copy of this rare work. Originally printed in the Fornightly Review in 1891, under the longer title of The Soul of Man Under Socialism, the present was Wilde's last major prose work. His biographer Edward Dudley Edwards described the piece of criticism as "the most memorable and certainly the most aesthetic statement of anarchist theory in the English Language" (DNB). Here, Wilde points out that men like Darwin or Keats are exceptions in the world -- geniuses seemingly untouched by the chaos of the social and political systems around them. Wilde positions himself outside of this, as an artist very much engaged with the problems of his time. Poverty is key among them. And he argues that approaching the problem with sympathy and intellect can only lead to one solution: "The proper aim is to try and reconstruct society on such a basis that poverty will be impossible...Charity creates a multitude of sins...It is immoral to use private property in order to alleviate the horrible evils that result from the institution of private property. It is both immoral and unfair." A powerful work with only 50 copies printed, the present was owned by Eva Fowler, who opened her home to London artists and writers … [Click Below for Full Description]
