Wells, H.G
William Heinemann, London. First English edition, first issue of Wells' groundbreaking "scientific romance"- a work generally credited with the popularization of the concept of time travel by using a vehicle that allows an operator to travel purposely and selectively forwards or backwards in time. Octavo, original cloth, front panel and spine stamped in purple with sphinx vignette. In near fine condition. First issue with first priority sixteen-page publisher's catalogue at end. Cover artist by Ben Hardy. In 1894 Wells "began writing what he called 'single sitting stories' using his special knowledge of science, culminating in the publication of his novella The Time Machine in 1895. It was an immediate success" (Gunn, From Gilgamesh to Wells, 337). Its earliest readers grasped its significance: as one contemporary review states, "So far as our knowledge goes [Wells] has produced that rarity which Solomon declared to be not merely rare but non-existent--a 'new thing under the sun'" (Bergonzi, 41). Important not only for establishing Wells as a popular author but also for making a "crucial breakthrough in narrative technology, providing science fiction with one of its most significant facilitating devices" (Clute & Nicholls, 1227), "it is the most important foundation stone of British scientific romance and the science fiction genre in general" (Anatomy of Wonder II-1232). Indeed, "once it was published it modified and changed English and American fiction forever. Wells had produced a significant and seminal work. a masterful marriage of the fictive art and theoretical scienc … [Click Below for Full Description]

MATHER, John A.
Titusville, Pennsylvania: John. A. Mather, 1895. Oblong small folio. (10 x 13 1/4 inches). Letterpress title, 2 preliminary leaves of text. 12 photographs, printing-out paper prints, each linen backed as issued, with Mather's caption in the negative. Publisher's dark brown cloth, covers bordered in blind, upper covers lettered in gilt. Important photographic record of the early days of the U.S. Petroleum Industry. The work was made and published by the pioneer photographer of the Pennsylvania oil fields, John A. Mather. The first oil well in the United States was drilled by E. L. Drake in Oil Creek, Pennsylvania, near Titusville, in 1859. On the 29th of August oil was struck. John A. Mather, a recent English immigrant and aspiring photographer, heard of Drake's discovery and the ensuing oil rush, and moved to Titusville in October 1860. He set up a gallery, built a floating photo studio and over the next forty years compiled an exhaustive photographic record of the growth of the oil industry. Mather's photographs rarely turn up in the marketplace. The photographs in the present work were printed in 1895 from earlier negatives. Most photographs are identified and dated in the negative. Mather's photographs serve up a visual narrative of this transitional period, documenting the rapid growth of the region from 1864-1880s, when it emerged as the first site of substantial oil wealth in the United States. Mr. Drake is shown along with his first oil well. Mather also depicts the early days of Titusville. The Oil Exchange Hotel is set amidst rolling hills marked with n … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rudyard Kipling wrote in his 1891 book, Letters of Marque, "Let those who doubt the thoroughness of a Museum under one man's control, built, filled, and endowed with royal generosity... go and exhaustively visit Dr. Hendley's charge at Jeypore." Hendley, who was honorary secretary of the Jeypore Museum, founding editor of the Jounal of Indian Art, and author of many works on Indian art, "led a very strenuous life, and will rank among those who have really understood India and the true signification of mid-Eastern ideas and art" (obituary in the British Medical Journal, 10 Feb. 1917). Small octavo, pp. [1-8] 1-151 [152] + [16]-page publisher's catalogue with first page headed "THE MANXMAN" inserted at rear, original decorated tan buckram, front and spine panels stamped in purple, publisher's monogram stamped in purple on rear panel, top and fore edges untrimmed, bottom edge rough trimmed. First British edition, first binding, earliest form of inserted publisher's catalogue. The Holt edition was published before the Heinemann edition and the text (presumably an earlier version of the story) differs significantly from the Heinemann edition (the better text) and from the NEW REVIEW serial. "Many rank it as Wells's best book, certainly its qualities are striking and direct ... All time-travel stories since owe a debt to Wells, none has become so acclaimed." - Bleiler (ed), Science Fiction Writers, p. 26. "THE TIME MACHINE might be considered the first work of modern science-fiction, and it is still the classic statement of an important subgenre ... A remarkable work, and necessary reading." - Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 2325. Anatomy of Wonder (1976) 2-161; (1981) 1-171; (1987) 1-103; (1995) 1-103; and (2004) II-1232. MASSENET, Jules 1842-1912
Paris: Au Ménestrel [PNs H. et. Cie. 7067.; G.H. 1386.], 1895. Large octavo. Half brown leather with marbled boards, dark orange title label gilt to spine, with original publisher's stiff decorative wrappers printed in black and gold bound in. 1f. (half title), 1f. (dedication), 1f. (title), [i] (named cast list, including Marie Heilbronn and [Jean-Alexandre] Talazac), [ii] (description of scenes), [i] (blank), 344 pp. music With autograph musical quotation signed by the composer dated November 24, 1909 to title. Slightly browned and soiled; first two leaves reinforced with paper tape to inner margin; former owner's bookplate to verso of two leaves; publisher's hand stamp to cast list; slight offsetting of autograph to blank verso of dedication; lower joint split prior to final leaf. First performed in Paris at the Opéra-Comique on January 19, 1884. Libretto based on Antoine-François Prévost's novel L'histoire du chevalier des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut (1731). Although an early work, Manon may be Massenet's best-known and most popular opera. "The designation 'opéra comique' is misleading: there are only a few lines of spoken dialogue. But in their place there is much mélodrame, faultlessly handled at a technical level... In the final analysis Manon is by way of being a 'highlights' opera, lacking the cohesion and economy of more mature Massenet works, but those highlights were seldom surpassed in the composer's oeuvre." They published books on aspects of 19th century French art and society, dismissing the vulgarity of the Second Empire in favour of a more refined age. They also published six novels of which one was based on the true case of their own maidservant, Rose Malinger, whose lived a double life. John Wesley Powell
Meadville, Pennsylvania: Flood & Vincent Chatauqua-Century Press. Condition: Near Fine. Large Quarto. (11.75" x 9"). Half-bound brown leather over textured cloth boards. Top edge gilt, with all leather junctures double-ruled in gilt. Bright gilt lettering to front board and five-hubbed spine. This particular copy was once a library copy, but has been masterfully restored to its current, near-fine state by this third-generation conservator/binder.A very few of the preliminary pages show tiny lower corner chips, and the tail (bottom edge) still tells the tale of a rough upbringing, but undeniably a gorgeous restoration of an exceedingly rare record of Western exploration. It is commonly believed that less than 100 copies of this first edition were issued. About this greatly expanded account of (the one-armed) Powell's exploratory voyage and survey along the entire length of The Colorado River, Howes (P-527, p. 465) writes: "The first complete narrative; his earlier reports were largely devoted to scientific data." 400 pp. plus advertisement at rear. 250 illustrations. though reprinted several times in the twentieth-Century, exceedingly rare in this, the first edition. Gorgeous, restored copy of an extremely rare and groundbreaking narrative of pioneer exploration. Powell, heretofore not much inclined to write lengthier pieces, yielded to pressure from Congressmen Garfield to complete the book-length report Explorations of the Colorado River of the West, published in 1875. When issued it included chapters by Harry Thompson, Elliott Coues, and G. Brown Goode, and as well include … [Click Below for Full Description]
