Bavaria: 1895. Good Condition. My mother was an avid book collector in the 80's and 90's. She purchased this book from a book dealer and has had it in her private collection since that time. She has recently passed and I have inherited this wonderful rare book. It is time to let it go so someone else can enjoy it. I have described as best I can with my limited research and knowledge. Thank you for looking. Pantomime Pictures - A Novel Surprise Book of Living Pictures - Printed in Bavaria (635) I believe this is a first edition. It measures 12 1/2" x 10". The cover page states Printed in Bavaria (635) with London Ernest Nister in bottom left hand corner and New York E.P. Dutton & Co in bottom right hand corner. Copyright 1895 by Nister. Book is in good shape with tight spine. Boards are worn, rubbed and a little stained. Inside pages have some foxing and smudge marks. Pages are loose from spine at bottom of book. 1 or 2 pages loose. New York: Richter, F. Ad. & Co.. This is an attractive set of Richter's Anchor Blocks housed in a wooden box with original color labels. Also includes 3 instruction booklets (No. 2, Nr. 4, No. 6) with color illustrations; two of these booklets are in English and German, and the other has text in German, Dutch and French. Also includes a sheet of paper figures titled "Annex No. 2with Anchor Blocks No. 6." The wooden box has colorful, detailed labels on both sides of the lid and measures 13" x 9" x 2". English is the primary language used on the box, with U. S. Patent information on both sides. This set was likely created in the early 20th century. Set is in good condition with moderate wear to box and moderate chipping to labels, bottom of box has a crack and is fragile; booklets and figures have light soiling and minor creasing. An inventive and fun architecture set, Richter's Anchor Blocks were very popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Anchor building stones were made famous after savvy businessman, Friedrich A. Richter, acquired the rights and manufacturing technique from Otto and Gustav Lilienthal, inventors of the blocks. Richter developed a series of sets with a various number of heavy stone blocks, each set including design books, a ground plan and sheets of paper figures. In 1895 he trademarked the design as "Richter's Anchor Stone Building Sets" or "Richters Anker Steinbaukasten." By using exhibition models to gather awards at architectural shows, providing glowing customer reviews, and marketing not only to children, but adult … [Click Below for Full Description]

AUSTEN, Jane.
London: George Allen, 1895. London: George Allen,, 1895. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine and front board elaborately gilt-blocked with peacock design, green coated endpapers, all edges gilt. Frontispiece with tissue guard and illustrations by Hugh Thomson. Ownership inscriptions to half-title and title page. Spine rolled and ends rubbed with a small tear to cloth, binding firm, red blemish to base of spine, a little wear to corners, covers generally dust soiled; a good copy. First fully illustrated edition, second printing, published five months after the first. This was the first edition to feature illustrations accompanying the text, as Bentley's 1833 edition and subsequent printings had featured only a frontispiece. Thomson's "light touch and feeling for period manners provide a charming and accessible gloss to the author's work" (ODNB). The exquisite gilt peacock design on the front cover has led to this work being known as the "peacock edition", and it is one of the most striking examples of late-Victorian pictorial cloth. Wells, H.G.
London: William Heinemann, 1895. First U.K. edition. Fine. A Fine copy of the book with slight foxing to the end-papers, otherwise in exceptional condition overall. With the 16 page catalogue in the rear starting with "The Manxman." "With his first novel, The Time Machine, which was immediately successful, Wells began a series of science fiction novels that revealed him as a writer of marked originality and an immense fecundity of ideas" (Britannica). Setting the tone for the bulk of his career, The Time Machine reveals Wells' passionate interest in the relationship between individual men and their society, and his fascination with how science could assist or hold men back from true progress. Adapted to radio, television, and film, the novel follows the Time Traveler as he uses his machine to see the future and encounter yet-unknown societies. Fine.

Spenser, Edmund, George Wharton Edwards, ill
Dodd, Mead, 1895. First printing. No. 13 of 25 copies signed by George Wharton Edwards. Tall 8vo (9 inches high), full vellum, heavily gilt decorated, lettered in green, watered green silk endpapers, printed on vellum-paper, with frontispiece and title page printed in gilt, the rest of the text and illustrations in b/w. Housed in folding original slipcase with green paper onlay to front replication the cover design. Book very good, lightest soil, some light rubbing to back covers, boards prone to slight bowing, slipcase somewhat used, with top edge missing and repairs to corners, etc. Still serves to protect the book and to keep it more or less flat. Bookplate of Marie Gerard Messenger (the most we could find is that she lived in Chappaqua and that her bookplate was considered fine enough to include in the 2004 'Art of the Bookplate' compilation with a foreword by George Plimpton) and inscription ON the bookplate to Annette Berault de St. Maurice (who became a Washington DC area French teacher). A lovely American arts & crafts book, clearly influenced by the work of Walter Crane, Anning Bell and Beardsley. Very Good. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Wolf, Hugo, Komponist (1860-1903).
Matzen, Brixlegg, Tirol, 12. VII. 1895. 4 SS. auf Doppelblatt. 8vo. The Diligent and New Diligent Club was a club set up by Sir Richard Harington, 12th Baronet of Ridlington and Sydney Hoare (the owner of the original Diligent). The club was established because the Diligent vessel was the largest yacht in the UK at the time (from one of the letters) in private ownership, which could be sailed. The yacht, owned by Hoare, was effectively 'chartered', sailed, and maintained by a group of wealthy clients co-ordinated by Sir Richard Harington. Kipling, Rudyard
Macmillan, London, 1895. Original publisher's cloth bindings with gilt to spines and boards. All edges brightly gilt. Dark green endpapers. A Fine set, with just the slightest bit of foxing at the preliminaries, otherwise both copies bright and clean. With a rare pink advertising slip in the second volume for Macmillan and Co.'s Christmas Books from 1895. Based on folk tales and legends that Kipling learned during his childhood in India but written while in Vermont. This work of several inter-related short stories met with huge success upon publication and continues to enthrall readers of all ages to this day. According to Professor Edwin L. Miller, their publication "caused even severe critics of [Kipling's] previous work to admit that he is a writer of inspired genius." Largely focused on man's relationship to nature, The Jungle Books in part narrate the tales of Mowgli, a human (man-cub) raised by wolves, as he tries to find his proper place in the world. As he struggles with his own identity, he finds allies and adversaries among the animal communities through which he travels. They also include the story of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, the heroic mongoose who would later inspire an animated short voiced by Orson Welles. For contributions like these, Kipling became the first English-language writer, and the youngest ever, to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. Fine. [Attributes: First Edition]

Marryat, Frederick
J.M. Dent 1895-96, London. Finely bound set of the works of Captain Marryat, one of 750 copies printed on handmade paper. Octavo, complete in 24 volumes, bound in three quarters morocco over marbled boards, raised bands, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers, with tissue-guarded frontispieces and plates. In fine condition. Frederick Marryat was a Royal Navy officer, a novelist, and a friend of Charles Dickens. He is noted today as an early pioneer of the sea story, particularly for his semi-autobiographical novel Mr Midshipman Easy, for his children's novel The Children of the New Forest, and for a widely used system of maritime flag signalling known as Marryat's Code. From 1832 to 1835, Marryat edited The Metropolitan Magazine. Additionally, he kept producing novels; his biggest success came with Mr Midshipman Easy in 1836. He lived in Brussels for a year, traveled in Canada and the United States, then moved to London in 1839, where he was in the literary circle of Charles Dickens and others. He was in North America in 1837 when the Rebellion of that year broke out in Lower Canada, and served with the British forces in suppressing it. Marryat was named a Fellow of the Royal Society in recognition of his invention and other achievements. In 1843, he moved to a small farm at Manor Cottage at Langham in Norfolk, where he died in 1848. His daughter Florence Marryat later became well known as a writer and actress. His son Francis Samuel Marryat completed his late novel The Little Savage. Marryat's novels are characteristic of their time, with co … [Click Below for Full Description]
