Hardy, Evelyn Stuart
1895. Watercolor on paper. Size: 8 by 10 inches. Initialed lower left. This was published in The Book of Gnomes, London: Ernest Nister, 1895, by Fred Weatherly. The caption on the printed image reads, "The Fairy Dance". Born Beatrice Evelyn Elizabeth Hardy in 1865 in Clifton, Bristol, to an artistic family, both her father David Hardy and his wife Emily, being artists. Her elder brothers David (better known as Paul Hardy, 1862-1942) and Norman Heywood Hardy (1863-1914) also became artists. From an early age she contributed work to periodicals and illustrated many books for Ernest Nister, who was known for publishing pop up books and nursery rhymes. For example, A Visit to Fairyland with Humpty Dumpty (1898) was positively reviewed as "an ingenious and elaborate conception. There are folding coloured plates with landscapes and architectural elevations, and with figures and animals moved by strips of cardboard." She contributed to various periodicals, including Chums, The Gentlewoman, Little Folks, Our Jabberwock, The Penny Magazine, St. James?s Budget and The Sporting and Dramatic News. Her illustrations appeared in dozens of books published from 1890 to 1922. Her books include a handful she penned herself: The Book of Gnomes (c.1895), At the Farm (1920), Me and my Doggies (1924) and Me and my Ponies (1925). Hardy did not marry. Her death was registered in Cuckfield, Sussex, in 1935.

Rendered into English by Lafcadio Hearn
Macrae-Smith Company (T. Hasegawa), 1895. Original wraps. Part of the wonderful "Japanese Fairy Tale" series, originally published (in a smaller format) by T. Hasegawa of Tokyo in very late 19th/early 20th century and here presented for an American audience in its larger format by the Macrae-Smith Company of Philadelphia. These 5 self-contained fairy tales have in common the sure translations of the great Lafcadio Hearn. They're also neatly contained in Macrae-Smith's printed blue cloth chemise (which shows very light rubbing and foxing at the front panel), with ivory clasps. All 5 of the fairy tales are vibrant and near-pristine in their ribbon-tied crepe paper, with rich illustrations from colored woodblocks. All of the volumes appear to be original printings in this American format and they most likely date from the 1895-1930. The 5 volumes are: "The Boy Who Drew Cats"; "The Old Woman Who Lost Her Dumpling"; "The Goblin Spider"; "The Fountain of Youth"; and "Chin Chin Kobakama" Near Fine. [Attributes: First Edition]

Enright, Maginel Wright [?]
n.p., n.d.: 1895. An approx. 12-1/4" x 10-3/4" chromolithograph broadside mystery, signed in the image, "Enright." Can't find the title To Date, in OCLC, NUC, or Union List of Serials, but the artist may be Frank Lloyd Wright's younger sister Maginel Wright Enright. According to Wikipedia, her first job as a commercial artist was with the Barnes, Crosby Co. of Chicago, where her main task was catalog illustration. There she met Walter J. "Pat" Enright, another young artist, whom she married. The artist may also be Walter. The signature in the image is not like any we've found for either Maginel or Walter, but stylistically the work seems closer to Maginel. It has been suggested that the title of the serial is actually "Up to Date," published in 7 issues, Chicago, 1894-98. Not found in NUC or OCLC, but the series is located at LC (only) in the Union List of Serials. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

John Wesley Powell
Meadville, Pennsylvania: Flood & Vincent Chatauqua-Century Press, 1895. Condition: Near Fine. Large Quarto. (11.75" x 9"). Half-bound brown leather over textured cloth boards. Top edge gilt, with all leather junctures double-ruled in gilt. Bright gilt lettering to front board and five-hubbed spine. This particular copy was once a library copy, but has been masterfully restored to its current, near-fine state by this third-generation conservator/binder.A very few of the preliminary pages show tiny lower corner chips, and the tail (bottom edge) still tells the tale of a rough upbringing, but undeniably a gorgeous restoration of an exceedingly rare record of Western exploration. It is commonly believed that less than 100 copies of this first edition were issued. About this greatly expanded account of (the one-armed) Powell's exploratory voyage and survey along the entire length of The Colorado River, Howes (P-527, p. 465) writes: "The first complete narrative; his earlier reports were largely devoted to scientific data." 400 pp. plus advertisement at rear. 250 illustrations. though reprinted several times in the twentieth-Century, exceedingly rare in this, the first edition. Gorgeous, restored copy of an extremely rare and groundbreaking narrative of pioneer exploration. Powell, heretofore not much inclined to write lengthier pieces, yielded to pressure from Congressmen Garfield to complete the book-length report Explorations of the Colorado River of the West, published in 1875. When issued it included chapters by Harry Thompson, Elliott Coues, and G. Brown Goode, and as well i … [Click Below for Full Description]

St. Louis: August Gast & Co, 1895. About very good.. Large folding map, 25.5 x 26.75 inches. A few small separations along fold lines, of which several archivally repaired on verso. Light tanning, an occasional fox mark. A rare and detailed map of Liberty County in East Texas, directly between Houston and Beaumont, at the end of the 19th century. The map provides a comprehensive picture of land ownership in the county as of 1895, according to the Texas General Land Office in Austin. It shows individual and corporate ownership of parcels countywide, including those of railroad companies, plotted over a highly accurate survey of the county which includes rivers, railroads, cities and towns. At this point in time, prior to the discovery of oil in East Texas, most land owners were individuals who controlled significant plots. Nearly all of the large grants along the Trinity River are dated to the 1830s, and many are dated to 1831, the year the municipal area was established by the Mexican government. OCLC locates only one copy, at the Library of Congress; we locate another at the Abilene Public Library; none in auction records. An outstanding cartographic snapshot of an East Texas county before the region was transformed by the discovery of oil at the beginning of the 20th century.

WELLS, H G.
J M Dent & Co., London, 1895. First issue, first state binding. 13 x 19.5cm, 251pp. Original blank red boards with bevelled edges, gilt titles to spine, top edge gilt others uncut. This is the first issue, having the uncorrected error on p.198, in the first state "A" binding as identified by Currey (p.448), being the same binding received by the British Library and preceding the more common "B" binding with the gilt stamped angel to the front board. The author's name on the spine is higher up than the "B" binding. There are light bumps to both fore edges, both top edges and to the upper joint. The spine is darkened with a little rubbing to the top and bottom and a light vertical crease and there are drip marks at the top edge of the lower board. The uncut edges are a little dust darkened. Internally, there is some light spotting to the front and rear endpapers, a couple of larger spots across the prelims and two red spots at the bottom edge of each of the last two leaves. Both front and rear inner hinges have cracked through 90% of the paper, though the mull is unaffected and the boards are still very firmly attached. There is a previous owner name at the top of the title page. Otherwise, the pages are very clean with only the occasional finger mark or spot. Five page corners are creased from having been folded over at some point. There is a previous owner name at the top of the title page. Over all, a very good copy of Wells' second novel, scarce in this binding. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
