Robert W. Chambers
New York: F. Tennyson Neely, 1895. New York: F. Tennyson Neely. New York, F. Tennyson Neely, 1895. First Edition. First Impression. Hardback. A very good copy. An important book in the weird / supernatural genre. Likely the third issue / state / printing. The exact chronology of the early issues has never been quite pinned down, but it's commonly agreed that the first two in the chronology were bound in green cloth. This is in some regards preferable as the cover artwork is by Chambers. Decent externally, with a few bumps and pushes here and there. A little roughly to the fore-edge. Tear to tissue-guard, a little webbing showing at the front hinge. A decent copy. [7490, Hyraxia Books]. . Very Good. Hardback. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 1895.

Woman's Board of the Medical & Surgical Hospital of Geneva
Geneva, NY: Press of W. F. Humphrey, 1895. First Edition. Original gold and white publisher's cloth binding, with title and decorative motif stamped in blue to the front board. Crown and foot of spine repaired, and mild spotting and edgewear to boards; endpapers have been replaced. Page edges gently toned, else internally about Fine, with a clean, tight text block that bears none of the normal signs of kitchen use. Contemporary advertisements interspersed throughout. A pleasing copy overall of this rare charitable cookery book, which is currently the only one known on the market. OCLC reports only 4 examples at institutions worldwide. First and only edition of this charitable women's cookery, which was produced "for the instruction of women in Culinary Science" with the goal "not only to increase the fund already in the Treasury which ultimately is to be appropriated for the equipment of that institution, but also to contribute a book which shall be of practical use to all house-keepers." Clearly a group of educated women, the Board compiling the cook book viewed house-keeping as an occupation that required knowledge and scientific workability. They reveal in the preface that all advice and recipes were researched and vetted to ensure that they created "a work of real merit," and their title page contains an epigram from Ruskin praising women's roles as sorcerers, chemists, and "loaf-givers." Including a range of recipes from breads and cheeses, to chafing dish meals, to meats, sauces, and salads, the book also contains advice on different service for lunch and dinner. (Forgeries) Howard, Benjamin C.; Eugene Field Jr., Harry Dayton Sickles
NY or Washington DC. Lacking wraps, so we're unsure if this is the Appleton or the Washington edition, both of which came out in wraps with same pagination. This copy 'signed' by Abraham Lincoln (twice) and also bears the signature of R. M. Fields and Eugene Field, dated 1895. With verso of terminal leaf bearing Eugene Field II's testimonial that this was a 'printer's copy' and was his grandfather's personal copy, etc. etc. dated 1936. Light wear, housed in folding cloth chemise and in calf backed cloth slipcase that is a bit soiled and used. Eugene Field Jr. and his partner, Harry Dayton Sickles, were well known for their forgeries of Lincoln's signature, and Field's statement of provenance is the kiss of death for this item; there is no doubt it's one of their forgeries. Field's grandfather, Roswell M. Field, represented Dred Scott in this pivotal case. Offered for sale as a curiosity. Good.

Japan, Honshu
circa 1895-1925. Original photograph album. Oblong, string-tied album of black cardstock leaves, 11" x 13", photographs mounted on 35pp, blanks at the rear. Bound in black, flexible boards with an embossed sailing ship and gilt lettering (Photo-Album) on the cover. Pasted in are 116 albumen and silver gelatin prints, ranging from small candids to 8 ½" x 10 ½" group portraits, a few fading, overall sharp and clean. Laid into the album are a Japanese news article, a small head-shot of an older gentleman, and a watercolor portrait (10" x 8 ¼") of a man's face. Very Good. Item #037990 Most of the photographs in this album. circa 1895-1925, were taken in Mie-Ken (or "Mie prefecture"), part of the Kansai region on the main island of Honshu. The group and individual portraits reflect new social and economic developments and cultural norms that emerged during this period. Subjects are shown in either traditional Japanese garments or in Western dress. Group shots often depict people wearing both styles within the same picture. There are many group shots of schoolchildren of both sexes, young people in uniforms posed before buildings with Japanese signs on them, as well as many formal group shots of families, some "nuclear"-husband, wife, children- others extended by relatives. Individual shots of young children show them almost invariably in western dress, one posed with his tricycle, young boys in uniform, a young girl in kimono showing a dance move while holding a fan, infants in traditional robes, and young men in business suits. Several birdseye views feature very large groups o … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tennyson, Frederick
London and Chicago: John Lane and the Bodley Head and Stone and Kimball, 1895. Patten Wilson. Hardcover. First Edition, Private Issue. Presentation Copy. This is the very scarce private version of Frederick Tennyson's last book. With a handwritten limitation notice on the half-title "Twenty five vellum bound copies of the first edition have been issued for private circulation, This is No. 16." It is inscribed: "To the Revd. W.B. Macleod With Capt. J. Tennyson's & the Authors Compliments Jersey Jan 1896." The recipient was the author of Frederick Tennyson: His Life and Work, published in 1896. Frederick Tennyson (1807-1898) was a poet and the older brother of Alfred Tennyson. Although a gifted poet, he was overshadowed by his brother throughout his life. Captain Julius Tennyson was the author's only son, and the book is dedicated to him and his sister, Sophia, whom Frederick called the companions of his old age. In original vellum with gilt title and author to spine, and gilt florettes and initial "F" to front cover. The spine is darkened and the covers are soiled and bumped but still nice. In very good condition with darkening to page edges. Frontispiece photograph of Tennyson and title page design by illustrator Patten Wilson. A lovely book with a charming association. 163 pages plus tipped-in errata sheet and 16 pages of publisher ads. POE/061313. Very Good. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

all paintings still vibrant; book with some discoloration and a few loose pages at front. 1st edition antique book ( circa 1895) titled "Etretat: Hamlet of the Setting Sun -- a Norman Village and its Surroundings" by American listed artist Henry Bacon (1839-1912). What makes this copy of note is that Bacon illustrated it with fifteen (15) original watercolor paintings, scattered throughout its pages. Because of limitations on ebay as to the number of photos that can be uploaded, we show five of these watercolors here, but can send more if interested. As far as condition, the watercolors are all fine, still bright and vibrant. The book itself is missing the dust jacket. The first three pages (two blanks/empty pages and a map of Etretat) are detached from the binding. The hard cover has some discoloration and signs of wear. Please let us know if you have any questions.

1895. Estudio Clinico Patologico y Etiologico. inscribed to Enrique Porto..."de su amigo" (from his friend...) SIGNED as "EL AUTOR" ("THE AUTHOR", Finlay) The cover (side) is worn, but this is a VERY rare medical, scientific, Cuban document Pre-Castro. The inside is in excellent condition for its age. 6" x 9", 36 pages. In Spanish. (en español) Carlos Juan Finlay (December 3, 1833 - August 20, 1915) was a Spanish-Cuban epidemiologist recognized as a pioneer in the research of yellow fever, determining that it was transmitted through mosquitoes. Finlay's work, carried out during the 1870s, finally came to prominence in 1900. He was the first to theorize, in 1881, that a mosquito was a carrier, now known as a disease vector, of the organism causing yellow fever: a mosquito that bites a victim of the disease could subsequently bite and thereby infect a healthy person. He presented this theory at the 1881 International Sanitary Conference, where it was well received. A year later Finlay identified a mosquito of the genus Aedes as the organism transmitting yellow fever. His theory was followed by the recommendation to control the mosquito population as a way to control the spread of the disease. His hypothesis and exhaustive proofs were confirmed nearly twenty years later by the Walter Reed Commission of 1900. Finlay went on to become the chief health officer of Cuba from 1902 to 1909. Although Dr. Reed received much of the credit in history books for "beating" yellow fever, Reed himself credited Dr. Finlay with the discovery of the yellow fever vector, and thus how it might be … [Click Below for Full Description]
