John Wisden
1895. This is a very special 1895 Wisden, rebound by Wisden in the middle of the 20th Century to mimic an 1896 hardback, a quirky Wisden that will appeal to some. The similarities to a hardback are that the paste downs are yellow (with a Liverpool cricket club stamp) , the gilt on the covers and spine are identical to that of an 1896. It is slightly smaller by 1/8th inch , smoky top to page block and severe foxing around photo plate, the uniqueness is what will appeal. Hard to price up but Gorringes sold a similar copy (spine less like an 1896) for £750+20% and selling for less than we purchased it for.

CURIE (Pierre)
Paris, Gauthiers-Villars et fils, 1895. Grand in-8 de (6), 117 et (3) pages ; cartonnage moderne. Très rare édition originale de la thèse de doctorat de Pierre Curie, "the basis of all modern theories of magnetism" (DSB). "Pierre Curie's doctoral dissertation [is] an essential contribution to the study of magnetism. Published the same year as his marriage to Maria Sklodovska, Curie's thesis explores the magnetic properties of substances at various temperatures, "at that time one of the most obscure areas of physics. The results. form the basis of all modern theories of magnetism. Curie divided the substances that were the subject of his experiments into three groups : "(1) ferromagnetic substances, such as iron, that always magnetize to a high degree; (2) low or paramagnetic substances. which magnetize in the same direction as iron but much more weakly; and (3) diamagnetic substances, which include the largest number of elements and compounds, whose very low magnetization is in the inverse direction of that of iron in the same magnetic field" (DSB). "Through painstaking and often physically demanding experimentation Curie succeeded in showing that diamagnetism remains constant regardless of exterior circumstances, from which he concluded that it is a specific property of atoms inherent in all matter, resulting from the action of the magnetic field on the movement of the particles inside the atom, whereas ferro- and paramagnetism, which are influenced by temperature, are properties of aggregates of atoms and are closely related." William Dean Howells
Boston: The Riverside Press, 1895. Condition: Minor edge wear, but generally very good or better, in the uncommon original pink cloth jacket, with the title and author stamped in gilt on the spine. 399 pages. Text based on the expanded 1888 edition. One of Howells' most popular books; this is the first of many deluxe editions that his publishers would commission in the coming decades. The edition was limited to 250 copies, illustrated by Clifford Carleton, with his drawings printed on thin 'China' paper and mounted in the book. Bound in vellum paper, stamped with gilt decoration. Minor edge wear, but generally very good or better, in the uncommon original pink cloth jacket, with the title and author stamped in gilt on the spine. The jacket spine is very faded and shows tide marks from old dampness - not affecting the binding. This is the publisher's copy, so indicated on the limitation page. The first blank has the signature of the publisher, H. O. Houghton, Jr., dated Nov. 18, 1894. Below that is a later inscription by Howells to the publisher's wife, 'For Rose Gilman Houghton, my dear lost Winnie's friend, with all affection. W. D. Howells. Cambridge, January 28, 1913.' Winnie (Winifred) was one of Howells' daughters, who died in 1889. A wonderful copy. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Chekhov, A.P.
Moscow: I.N. Kushnerev, 1895. [4], III, 520 pp. 19,5x14 cm. Contemporary quarter leather. Gilt lettering on the spine. Minor restoration of the spine otherwise a very good copy. The first edition of the famous Anton Chekhov's (1860-1904) travel diaries. Chekhov was sending his notes to the periodical 'Russkaya Mysl' [i.e. Russian Thought] from 1893 till 1895, but when this book came out Chekhov added another 4 chapters to the end of the book. In 1890 Chekhov, already a well-known playwright, has visited the island of Sakhalin in Northern Pacific, north of Japan, which was used at the time as a penal colony for convicts and repetitive offenders. For three months Chekhov was interviewing local settlers and convicts. The detailed account of the life of the people on the island painted a picture of social injustice in the far end of the Russian Empire. The book was written in anger and appeals to the government demanding a humane treatment of the people. Some of the harsher examples including floggings, embezzlement of supplies, and forced prostitution of women. Because of the remoteness of the place we can presume that without Chekhov we wouldn't know the details of life on Sakhalin at the time. The New Yorker named "Sakhalin Island" the best work of journalism written in the 19th century: "The reason [...] is that, unlike other major journalistic works from that period (for example, journalism from the Crimean War), the book has not aged. Chekhov, A.P.
I.N. Kushnerev, Moscow. The New Yorker named "Sakhalin Island" the best work of journalism written in the 19th century: "The reason [.] is that, unlike other major journalistic works from that period (for example, journalism from the Crimean War), the book has not aged. [CREATIVE PRINT MOVEMENT] Matsuzaki U-ichi
[CREATIVE PRINT MOVEMENT] Matsuzaki U-ichi. Untitled "EIGHT VIEWS OF NAGASAKI" 8 oblong ôban size prints, tipped onto sheets and overlain by English and Japanese bilingual descriptions of the scenes depicted. The sheets are 30.5 x 38.2 cm. Matsuzaki [1895-1972] did these prints in the early 1950s. He had attended Tôkyô Bijutsu Gakkô and was an art professor in Nagasaki through and after the Pacific War. An almost unheard of group of lovely landscape prints of a city devastated by the atom bombing, which is mentioned but the effects of which are never depicted. If one didn't know by the text, one might think it a pre-Ware production and, indeed, perhaps it was, and unpublished, was repurposed for a much different audience. Just a guess, but may bear more research. The prints and folders are in very good condition, despite their apparent fragility.

Set is in good condition with moderate wear to box and moderate chipping to labels, bottom of box has a crack and is fragile; booklets and figures have light soiling and minor creasing. An inventive and fun architecture set, Richter's Anchor Blocks were very popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Anchor building stones were made famous after savvy businessman, Friedrich A. Richter, acquired the rights and manufacturing technique from Otto and Gustav Lilienthal, inventors of the blocks. Richter developed a series of sets with a various number of heavy stone blocks, each set including design books, a ground plan and sheets of paper figures. In 1895 he trademarked the design as "Richter's Anchor Stone Building Sets" or "Richters Anker Steinbaukasten." By using exhibition models to gather awards at architectural shows, providing glowing customer reviews, and marketing not only to children, but adults as well, Richter mad … [Click Below for Full Description]
