St. Petersburg: tip. Imp. Akad. nauk, 1895. [2], 9 pp., 44 ill. 42x29.8 cm. Period half-leather with gilt lettering on the spine. Slightly worn, but generally in very good condition. Scarce. First edition. This album of monochrome lithographs displays views and linguistic material collected during one of the most important expeditions to the Caucasus and the Southern shore of the Caspian Sea at the time. In 1860 the Imperial Academy of Sciences decided to send Boris Dorn (1805-1881) - a German orientalist specializing in the history and the languages of Iran, Russia and Afghanistan - on a scientific trip to Southern Caucasus. Primary objective of the expedition was to collect information about oriental languages, culture, manuscripts, coins and other rarities: "Many secrets that cannot be explained here will be uncovered during the expedition...and many riddles that seem inexplicable will finally be solved" (B.D). Dorn left St. Petersburg on the 17th of August 1860 and embarked upon a 10-month journey to Azerbaijan, Georgia, Persia, Uzbekistan and Dagestan. A scientific report of the expedition was first published in German in a Bulletin de l'Ac. Imp. Des Sciences de St. P., 1861. The Russian translation was printed as a separate edition (A Report on a Scientific Trip to the Caucasus and the Southern Coast of the Caspian Sea) the same year. In spite of Dorn's multiple attempts to issue an atlas illustrating scientific results of the expedition, the endeavor could not be completed during his life and the atlas was published posthumously under the supervision of the Rus … [Click Below for Full Description]

(KELMSCOTT PRESS). HERRICK, ROBERT
Hammersmith: Kelmscott Press, 1895. ONE OF 250 COPIES ON PAPER (and eight on vellum). This is a lovely example of a Kelmscott quarto, with content that represents an unlikely Kelmscott publication. Of the four pre-19th century English poets chosen for printing at the Kelmscott Press, three of them--Chaucer, Spenser, and Shakespeare--are obvious selections. Herrick, the only representative from the 17th and 18th centuries, seems an odd choice, partly because of his relatively lesser stature and partly because the world views of the poet and publisher seem to have had so little in common. As Gertzman says, "Morris would have mistrusted on principle those qualities which made [Herrick] fashionable: his elegant wordplay, his ethereal aloofness from the sordid and mundane, the 'moral-pathetic' vein of his laments for maidens, children, and primroses, his insouciant immersion in holiday festivities and country contentment. [Morris] would [have] disdain[ed] the nineteenth-century taste for such effusions (if not the poems themselves) as sanctioning the social injustices of one's own time by affecting an air of 'dignified' (possibly self-righteous) equanimity." Morris observed to a friend, "I like him better than I thought I should. I daresay we will make a pretty book of it." (Gertzman, p. 124) And so they did: the book is an attractive Kelmscott small quarto, partly because of the great number and variety of woodcut initials used, and the present copy has the very bright, clean condition that is growing increasingly difficult to find.. 216 x 152 mm. (8 1/2 x 6"). xiv pp, [1] le … [Click Below for Full Description]

Original flexible vellum, yapp edges, gilt titling on spine, original silk ties. Elaborate woodcut title, elaborate border on first page of text, decorative woodcut initials, device on final page. Poet and writer Celia Thaxter (1835-1894) spent the majority of her life on the Isles of Shoals off the coast of Maine living and working with her father at his Appledore Hotel, a setting which inspired many of her works. This work is described by BAL as being "one of the most elaborate pieces of bookmaking of the period". "Critics are usually in agreement that Celia's finest writing is in An Island Garden, a distillation of her abiding love affair with Appledore. Henry David Thoreau
First edition of this rarity, published in 1895 by the Bodley Head in England with sheets sent to Houghton Mifflin in Boston. Edited and selected by Henry S. Salt and Frank B. Sanborn. A fragile book, made with higher acid paper. The result is that the paper chips rather than folds (see corner of image 8) but thankfully this hasn't happened elsewhere. The also paper seems capable of cracking along the gutter if mishandled, but also hasn't really happened to this book aside from the hinges and very slightly to the title page. Bookplate to front pastedown and inscription on first blank page. Boards are chipped at ends of spine with a few small areas of separation to cloth along front joint. An unusually rare book made rarer by frequent condition issues. [Attributes: First Edition]

Some wear on boards, all 32 pages interleaved with glassine, almost all photographs captioned in a clear hand; very good. A commemorative album for Löwenbräu head master brewer Joseph Schülein (active 1895-1938) and his son, Dr. Hermann Schülein, who was instrumental in the management and development of the company's brand. The photographs show the interior and exteriors of Löwenbräu beer halls and taverns in Munich, Rottach, Sttutgart, Bad Reichenhall, Rosenheim, Utting, Herrsching, and other locales in Southern Germany, many of them small towns. Captions identify the buildings and the dates they were opened or re-opened. Among them is the Bürgerbräukeller, which has been the largest beer hall in Munich since the 19th century, when Löwenbräu merged with Bürgerliches Brauhaus. The Bürgerbräukeller was damaged by Allied bombing in 1945, and some of the photographs here document its reconstruction. The building served as an American Red Cross Club starting in late 1945 and became a Special Services club before the renovations in 1947. A valuable record of post-war German reconstruction and the expansion of the Löwenbräu brewing empire.
