Feininger, Lyonel, Maler (1871-1956).

KEYNOTE. DIX, Gertrude.
John Lane. (Keynotes series, no. 14) 1895. FIRST EDITION. Half title, title with design by Aubrey Beardsley, 10pp unopened reviews, 16pp unopened cata. (1895). Uncut in orig. brown cloth, blocked & lettered in pale blue, spine lettered in gilt; mostly unnoticeable crease to front board. A nice bright copy of a scarce title. Gertrude Dix, 1867-1950, novelist, socialist and active member of the Fabian Society in Bristol. Her paternal grandfather was the poet, biographer, and disgraced alcoholic John Dix, and her father was acclaimed hymn writer William Chatterton Dix. Gertrude wrote only two novels, The Girl from the Farm, and The Image Breakers (1900), before she moved to California with her husband and controversial socialist Robert Allan Nicol. Though her second novel is better known for its overtly socialist themes, The Girl from the Farm is the story of a rebellious daughter who eventually leaves her family to set up a house with a close female friend and a pregnant woman who has been abandoned by her relations and the father of her child. Earlier in the novel Dix makes a sly reference to renowned socialist Edward Carpenter while discussing the 'simplification of life' writing: 'There is that Mr Gardener Katherine knows, who writes books about it, and goes to absurd extremes [.] [he] earns a living by market-gardening - or was it making sandals? - calls himself a socialist [.] a friend of mine who met him said she was surprised to find him quite a gentleman, and that of course makes it all the more regrettable.' The Saturday Review labelled the novel 'a decidedly clever … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

This is a very rare work; WorldCat cites only one copy and that is in the British Library. New Edition of Petr Mikhailovich Boklevsky, Vladimir Y. Stoyunin and Nikolai Gogol's Album of Gogol's Characters from Sketches by Petr Boklevsky With a prefatory letter from V. Y. Stoyunin, and explanatory texts from Gogol. The portraits are of characters from Gogol's DEAD SOULS. DEAD SOULS was first published in 1842, and widely regarded as an exemplar of 19th-century Russian literature. These people are typical of the Russian middle-class of the time. Gogol himself saw it as an epic poem in prose, and within the book as a novel in verse. Despite supposedly completing the trilogy's second part, Gogol destroyed it shortly before his death. Although the novel ends in mid-sentence (like Sterne's Sentimental Journey), it is usually regarded as complete in the extant form. -Wik i Published by Goppe in 1895, the book is in fair condition dark green cloth hardcover, recased, with decorated and embossed boards. Jane Austen
London: George Allen. ABOUT: 1895 Victorian Copy of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen in the Peacock Edition with green cloth cover and the famous gold embossed peacock decoration on the cover and gilt lettering and decoration on the spine. All page edges are gilt as well and this edition contains black and white illustrations by Hugh Thompson. After the title page is the facsimile inscription page of the illustrator's dedication. (Please see important condition notes below.) One of the most beloved novels of all time and here is an original, antique Victorian edition in the highly collectible peacock illustrated edition. Would make an excellent gift for yourself, a collector or a Jane Austen fan in your life! This is not a modern reprint. These earlier copies are highly collectible and will likely only go up in value. I absolutely love the gold embossed decorations on the spine and cover making it so pretty while nestled on your shelf. A true classic. This is a single volume edition so the full story is here in the 476 pages. The edges of the pages are beautifully gilt in metallic gold, visible when the book is closed. This antique copy was printed in 1895 by George Allen, Ruskin House London. IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES: Please note that all my listings are pre-owned with some age to them so they are in estate condition. Outside - I see some wear to the cover, scuffs and discoloration on the cover and spine and wear on the spine edges allowing the white board underneath the green cloth to show through in a few places. The book clearly has age and use to it as the green col … [Click Below for Full Description]

LYTTON, Edward Bulwer, 1st Baron Lytton.
London: George Routledge & Sons, Limited,, 1895-8. 29 volumes, octavo (178 x 121 mm). Near-contemporary red half morocco by Palmer Howe & Co. of Manchester, spines lettered in gilt on blue morocco labels, red cloth sides, marbled endpapers and edges. Lean to spine of vol. I, some volumes a little rubbed. A very good set. A handsomely bound set of Lytton's novels. Lord Lytton (1803-1873), alongside his role as a Member of Parliament and a minister, was also perhaps the most popular historical novelist of his day. "Time and again, it was the intellectual content of [Lytton's] fiction which his contemporaries singled out as its main distinguishing feature. Whether anatomizing the social causes of crime, exhuming representative episodes in history, or analysing the dynamics of spiritual aspiration, his novels were habitually grounded in a rigorous examination of moral, political, and philosophical issues. Each in its own way was designed as much to educate as to entertain; by 1837 he had become 'the metaphysician-novelist of England' (Monthly Magazine, 24.541)" (ODNB).
