Paul Lawrence Dunbar, [i.e. Laurence, not Lawrence]
[Toledo, Ohio: Hadley and Hadley for the Author, 1895.] First Edition. Unknown issue in a variant binding. Tan gilt lettered cloth; floral endpapers. Frontispiece portrait of the author. Binding lightly spotted; Dunbar poem clipping to pastedown; a near fine copy. According to Charles Blockson, "Dunbar (1872-1906) was the leading Afro-American literary' figure before World War I." DANB informs through "the help of Dr. H. A. Tobey of Toledo and other white friends whom Tobey brought together, Dunbar was able to publish in 1895 his second collection of verse, Majors and Minors. The work contained 148 pages, 86 of them presenting verses in classic or standard English. The other poems were printed under the heading "Humor and Dialect." Although Dunbar thought of his poems in standard English as "Major," critics from the very beginning have tended to change his classification. Modern scholars realize that Majors and Minors is a remarkable work, and that it contains some of Dunbar's best poems in both dialect and standard English." This is Dunbar's second book and one of 500 copies printed. This copy does not conform to BAL 4917; the binding color, its design, and the book's floral endpapers are distinct in presentation; the boards are not beveled, for example. We suggest this copy is either an unknown issue or the first edition, in a variant binding. Rare, thus and an exceptionally lovely copy. Blockson, Afro-American Exhibition #138. Work p458. Blockson 101 #54: "His first two books of poetry, Oak and Ivy and Majors and Minors are rare and beyond the reach of most collectors of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Housed in the only known example of the glassine jacket, in exceptional condition with only the smallest nicks and closed tears to the bottom edges, and small loss at the crown of spine. Glassine adhering in a small area on spine of book. Internally clean, complete, and tight. Small publisher's advertisement laid in. This autobiographical work by leading American women's activist Frances Willard has appeared only twice at auction, with the most recent over 30 years ago in 1987. "Frances Willard, leader of the Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU), was a complex and energetic figure in American feminism and social reform...Although Willard proclaimed the virtues of traditional domesticity for women, she was not bound by those conventional ideas in her own life" (GMU). After an unhappy engagement early in her life, Willard refused to marry any man, instead living long term with her partner Anna Gordon and working for women's rights. Tennyson, Frederick
London and Chicago: John Lane and the Bodley Head and Stone and Kimball, 1895. Patten Wilson. Hardcover. First Edition, Private Issue. Presentation Copy. This is the very scarce private version of Frederick Tennyson's last book. With a handwritten limitation notice on the half-title "Twenty five vellum bound copies of the first edition have been issued for private circulation, This is No. 16." It is inscribed: "To the Revd. W.B. Macleod With Capt. J. Tennyson's & the Authors Compliments Jersey Jan 1896." The recipient was the author of Frederick Tennyson: His Life and Work, published in 1896. Frederick Tennyson (1807-1898) was a poet and the older brother of Alfred Tennyson. Although a gifted poet, he was overshadowed by his brother throughout his life. Captain Julius Tennyson was the author's only son, and the book is dedicated to him and his sister, Sophia, whom Frederick called the companions of his old age. In original vellum with gilt title and author to spine, and gilt florettes and initial "F" to front cover. The spine is darkened and the covers are soiled and bumped but still nice. In very good condition with darkening to page edges. Frontispiece photograph of Tennyson and title page design by illustrator Patten Wilson. A lovely book with a charming association. 163 pages plus tipped-in errata sheet and 16 pages of publisher ads. POE/061313. Very Good. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Robert Reitzel 1895-1897, Detroit. Late group of issues of this prominent German-American radical literary journal. Der arme Teufel was published weekly for 14 years by Robert Reitzel, a German-born American anarchist, poet, critic and translator. The first two volumes of the journal were mainly concerned with the freethought movement, primarily consisting of articles on religious criticism; in its later years, Reitzel declared Der arme Teufel to be an anarchist publication. Reitzel was a staunch supporter of the imprisoned Haymarket anarchists, and later, of Alexander Berkman during his confinement. Indeed, Reitzel's journal was reportedly the only radical serial Berkman was allowed to receive while he was in prison. "Emma Goldman noted Reitzel's importance for facilitating American exposure to European radical thought," describing him as a "brilliant writer" and his Arme Teufel as "the one German paper in the States that kept its readers in contact with the new literary spirit in Europe" (Donaldson, Randall P. The Literary Legacy of a "Poor Devil": The Life and Work of Robert Reitzel (1849-1898) (New York: Lang, 2002), p.50-51). 22 tabloid issues (ca.36cm); printed newsprinted wrappers; 8pp per issue. Publication sequence runs as follows: Vol.XI, Nos.565-567; Vol.XII, Nos.595, 597, 599-603; Vol.XIII, Nos.631-640, 642-643. Wells, H. G.
New York: Holt, 1895. Very good. H.G. Wells first novel: THE TIME MACHINE AN INVENTION Hardcover, first edition. New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1895. by Wells, H[erbert] G[eorge] Small octavo, 216 pages with no ads, 22 book titles listed under the "Buckram Series" books on the verso of the half title page (12 titles are listed in the first issue) inserted frontispiece (with tissue guard) with an illustration by W. B. Russell, original decorated tan buckram, front and spine panels stamped in gray purple ink with top page edges gilt, other edges untrimmed-the same as the first issue published by Holt Company. First edition, early printing of the author's first novel with author's name correctly printed as "H. G. WELLS" on recto of title leaf. The stamping on the spine is clearly legible, which is not common in these buckram books. The "Author's Note" following title page is still incorrectly printed "H. S. Wells" as was in the first American issue. This edition precedes the English edition by several months and has textual differences that differ from the UK first edition. Later issues were bound in red or maroon cloth with Wells' name corrected. This issue is in the decorated tan buckram cloth as is the first issue. Cloth is slightly soiled with a bit of cloth lifting on the front panel. This is very good solid square-backed copy with unbroken firm hinges of a very hard to find book. Charles A. Madison in THE OWL AMONG COLOPHONS - HENRY HOLT AS PUBLISHER AND EDITOR stated that Holt sold a total (including the first issue copies with the name misprint) of only 1,173 copies … [Click Below for Full Description]

Dunbar, Paul Lawrence
Hadley & Hadley. (1895). First edition. Thin 12mo green cloth over beveled boards, lettered in gilt on the front board. Tissue-guarded frontispiece portrait of Dunbar. There is a tiny white letter "D" at the base of the spine, suggesting that this might have been intended to be in a library, but other than neatly handwritten letters "B6" on the front pastedown and front free endpaper, there is no evidence of a library history. Spine tips and corners rubbed, but the lettering is bright. Bookplate on the front free endpaper and former owner?s name crossed out on the verso of the frontispiece. Front inner hinge professionally strengthened. Pasted onto the rear endpapers is a long, favorable, contemporary review of the book by William Dean Howells. Frontispiece tissue with light foxing and one fox mark to the dedication page, else a very clean copy internally. A very good copy of the author's second book. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Hindemith, Paul

Hardy, Evelyn Stuart
1895. Watercolor on paper. Size: 8 by 10 inches. Initialed lower left. This was published in The Book of Gnomes, London: Ernest Nister, 1895, by Fred Weatherly. The caption on the printed image reads, "The Fairy Dance". Born Beatrice Evelyn Elizabeth Hardy in 1865 in Clifton, Bristol, to an artistic family, both her father David Hardy and his wife Emily, being artists. Her elder brothers David (better known as Paul Hardy, 1862-1942) and Norman Heywood Hardy (1863-1914) also became artists. From an early age she contributed work to periodicals and illustrated many books for Ernest Nister, who was known for publishing pop up books and nursery rhymes. For example, A Visit to Fairyland with Humpty Dumpty (1898) was positively reviewed as "an ingenious and elaborate conception. There are folding coloured plates with landscapes and architectural elevations, and with figures and animals moved by strips of cardboard." She contributed to various periodicals, including Chums, The Gentlewoman, Little Folks, Our Jabberwock, The Penny Magazine, St. James?s Budget and The Sporting and Dramatic News. Her illustrations appeared in dozens of books published from 1890 to 1922. Her books include a handful she penned herself: The Book of Gnomes (c.1895), At the Farm (1920), Me and my Doggies (1924) and Me and my Ponies (1925). Hardy did not marry. Her death was registered in Cuckfield, Sussex, in 1935.

Rendered into English by Lafcadio Hearn
Macrae-Smith Company (T. Hasegawa), 1895. Original wraps. Part of the wonderful "Japanese Fairy Tale" series, originally published (in a smaller format) by T. Hasegawa of Tokyo in very late 19th/early 20th century and here presented for an American audience in its larger format by the Macrae-Smith Company of Philadelphia. These 5 self-contained fairy tales have in common the sure translations of the great Lafcadio Hearn. They're also neatly contained in Macrae-Smith's printed blue cloth chemise (which shows very light rubbing and foxing at the front panel), with ivory clasps. All 5 of the fairy tales are vibrant and near-pristine in their ribbon-tied crepe paper, with rich illustrations from colored woodblocks. All of the volumes appear to be original printings in this American format and they most likely date from the 1895-1930. The 5 volumes are: "The Boy Who Drew Cats"; "The Old Woman Who Lost Her Dumpling"; "The Goblin Spider"; "The Fountain of Youth"; and "Chin Chin Kobakama" Near Fine. [Attributes: First Edition]
