Robert Ormond Case lived from 1895 to 1964, residing in Oregon most of his life. He was educated at the University of Oregon and went on to become a popular author of books and stories in the western genre, as well as a prominent resident of Portland. This is an amazing piece of history from the Binford and Mort collection Portland Oregon. Oregon's first major book publisher, Binfords & Mort, was established in 1930 to publish fiction and non-fiction works about the Pacific Northwest. During its heyday, from 1930 to 1960, the firm was an integral part of regional study and the promotion of regional literature. Binfords & Mort published several important titles, some still considered definitive, including History of Oregon Literature, by Alfred Powers; Oregon Geographic Names, by Lewis McArthur; Dictionary of Oregon History, by Howard McKinley Corning; and A General History of Oregon (2 vols.), by Charles Carey. Binfords & Mort also published Oregon county and city histories, juvenile historical fiction, natural history, and regional poetry. Peter and Maurice Binford had established the Metropolitan Press, a Portland printing business, in 1899. As the business expanded, it became clear that there was a market for new books about the Pacific Northwest, and the Binfords started a publishing firm under the umbrella of Metropolitan Press. The first books published by this new press were carefully selected. They included important works such as Thomas Nelson Strong's Cathlamet on the Columbia and Frederic Homer Balch's Bridge of the Gods, whose copyrights had expired, as well as … [Click Below for Full Description]

Harris, Joel Chandler
D. Appleton, 1895. Hardcover. First edition of the large paper edition, no. 164 of 250, signed by Harris after the preface. Large 8vo, full vellum gilt, illustrations by A.B. Frost, some soil and darkening to boards, very light rubbing along joints and corners - maybe a diligent purchaser could take an eraser and clean this up. Contents very good, shadow from price sticker removal to corner of flyleaf, otherwise very good, some toning to pages. One of the most enduring of southern literature aimed at both children and adults, much of the stories, told in dialect, representing Harris's adaptation of African-American and slave folk tales. Very Good. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Austen, Jane
George Allen & Company, London. 476pp. 1895. 12mo. A second impression of the Hugh Thomson illustrated edition in good or good plus condition. The charming 'peacock' edition - named so because of it's elaborate gilt stamped peacock design to the front board (virtually no soiling and not mottling to this board) Original publisher's green boards profusely stamped in gilt to the spine and the front board All edges gilt. The text beautifully illustrated with numerous charming engraved illustrations after Hugh Thomson including a (no tissue-guard) frontispiece. No inscriptions. Original publisher's charcoal black endpapers. The gilt to the spine slightly dulled. Light rubbing to the cloth at the head and tail of the spine with slight loss of cloth and slight loss of gilt work. Light but closed splitting (only the slightest of webbing exposed to the front inner hinge) to both inner hinges. Rubbing with slight loss of cloth to all four board corners. The text block tight and essentially very clean - only the slightest of very scattered spotting. Two or three very slight rub marks in the cloth of the rear joint. Stephen Crane
New York: 1895. Up for sale is a true First Edition / First Printing of Stephen Cane's Civil War classic "The Red Badge of Courage." Printed in 1895 by New York, D. Appleton Company this has been in continuous print ever since and is always found on lists of greatest American novels. There were multiple printings and editions which all have the same unique cover design but the true first printing will have the 1895 data on the title page, top edge yellow, unbroken type int he word "congratu-lated" on page 225, and lists Gilbert Parker's Best Books on the top of the list of advertised books (later lists this title). This copy meets all these points. For condition this copy is just acceptable. Its pages are clean and tightly bound with no missing pages, but the covers are showing a lot of wear and fading. The gilt around the "T" is still strong but the spine title is virtually unreadable. There is also about a 1.5" crack along the front hinge of the spine. This copy could be beautifully rebound or left original but I decided to leave this up to the buyer. [Attributes: First Edition]

John Uri Lloyd
Cincinnati: Standard Publishing Company. A very rare 1895 author's edition of "Etidorhpa or The End of the Earth" written by John Uri Lloyd and illustrated by J. Augustus Knapp This seems to be a signed copy, but I cannot guarantee the signature. However, it seems quite likely that Lloyd would have signed each of the personal edition copies. The front panel has elaborate coloring and illustration that is not seen on later editions. The book contains fantastic illustrations. The pages are in good condition. The spine and covers have obvious wear as shown in the photos. Also, the front panel has a small stain as shown in the photos. See photos for details on the condition of the book, but feel free to ask questions. Also, be sure to check out my other listings. [Attributes: First Edition]

Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen
London: Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen, 1895. Very Good. This broadside is a wonderful expression of Labor's ability to care for their own. Progressing through, and showing the happy life of a working family, the death of their breadwinner through a terrible train accident and the ultimate care given to the bereaved family with both money and a cheque from the BLF. One of the panels depicts the same broadside displayed behind the widow as she recieves the money from the organization that her dearly departed was wise enough to belong to. Printed by Alexander Gow & Company, London. Allegorical chromolithograph broadside, 29-5/16 x 22-7/8 inches wide with some toning, soil and stains, browning verso - overall, still bright, colorful and complete. "The Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen (B of LF&E) was a North American railroad fraternal benefit society and trade union in the 19th and 20th Centuries. The organization began in 1873 as the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen (B of LF), a mutual benefit society for workers employed as firemen for steam locomotives, before expanding its name in 1907 in acknowledgement that many of its members had been promoted to the job of railroad engineer. Gradually taking on the functions of a trade union over time, in 1969 the B of LF&E merged with three other railway labor organizations to form the United Transportation Union.' wiki.

Paul Lawrence Dunbar, [i.e. Laurence, not Lawrence]
[Toledo, Ohio: Hadley and Hadley for the Author, 1895.] First Edition. Unknown issue in a variant binding. Tan gilt lettered cloth; floral endpapers. Frontispiece portrait of the author. Binding lightly spotted; Dunbar poem clipping to pastedown; a near fine copy. According to Charles Blockson, "Dunbar (1872-1906) was the leading Afro-American literary' figure before World War I." DANB informs through "the help of Dr. H. A. Tobey of Toledo and other white friends whom Tobey brought together, Dunbar was able to publish in 1895 his second collection of verse, Majors and Minors. The work contained 148 pages, 86 of them presenting verses in classic or standard English. The other poems were printed under the heading "Humor and Dialect." Although Dunbar thought of his poems in standard English as "Major," critics from the very beginning have tended to change his classification. Modern scholars realize that Majors and Minors is a remarkable work, and that it contains some of Dunbar's best poems in both dialect and standard English." This is Dunbar's second book and one of 500 copies printed. This copy does not conform to BAL 4917; the binding color, its design, and the book's floral endpapers are distinct in presentation; the boards are not beveled, for example. We suggest this copy is either an unknown issue or the first edition, in a variant binding. Rare, thus and an exceptionally lovely copy. Blockson, Afro-American Exhibition #138. Work p458. Blockson 101 #54: "His first two books of poetry, Oak and Ivy and Majors and Minors are rare and beyond the reach of most collectors of … [Click Below for Full Description]
