DIX, Gertrude.
London: John Lane; Boston: Roberts Bros., 1895. London: John Lane; Boston: Roberts Bros.,, 1895. Octavo. Original brown cloth, title to spine gilt, key monogram to spine, title and decoration to sides in light grey, all designed by Aubrey Beardsley, top edge trimmed, others untrimmed. With the publisher's advertisements to the rear, unopened. Title page design by Aubrey Beardsley. Spine slightly darkened, front inner hinge partly cracked but firm. A very good copy. First edition, number 14 in Lane's Keynotes series. The Keynotes Series, comprising 33 novels and short story collections, were produced by John Lane between 1893 and 1897. Aubrey Beardsley provided designs for 22 Keynotes volumes while working on The Yellow Book, a quarterly periodical also published by John Lane. The Keynotes series shared a close relationship with the progressive literary trends of 1890s, emphasised by their designs by Beardsley, a leading figure in the aesthetic movement whose often scandalous art contributed heavily to the development of the Art Nouveau. Gertrude Dix's The Girl from the Farm was a New Woman novel; a popular Victorian literary genre which sought to provide a window into the lives of middle-class working women and explore utopian ideals. Typical of the Keynotes novels' socialist themes and exploration of marriage and female emancipation, the novel is a radical "attack on the church's hypocrisy about sexual relationships with a defense of a young woman's right to be independent of her parents' selfish demands" (Harris, p. 1409). John Wisden
This is a very special1895 Wisden, rebound by Wisden in the middle of the 20th Century to mimic an 1896 hardback, a quirky Wisden that will appeal to some. The similarities to a hardback are that the paste downs are yellow (with a Liverpool cricket club stamp) , the gilt on the covers and spine are identical to that of an 1896. It is slightly smaller by 1/8th inch , smoky top to page block and severe foxing around photo plate, the uniqueness is what will appeal. Hard to price up but Gorringes sold a similar copy (spine less like an 1896) for £750+20% and selling for less than we purchased it for. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Pope, Gustavus W.
New York: F. Tennyson Neely Publisher, n.d. [1895].. Octavo, pp. [1-4] [1-4] 5-499 [500: blank], 16 inserted plates with illustrations by Miss Fairfax and Mrs. McAuley from drawings by the author, original green cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold, white endpapers with floral pattern printed green. First edition. A later issue of the first edition with the "Arena" imprint on the spine panel and a cancel title page with Neely's imprint. This novel, the second and last of Pope's projected "Romances of the Planets" series, was first published by Arena Publishing Company in 1895. Arena issued the novel in two forms, in cloth with sixteen inserted plates, and in paper with three inserted plates. Neely acquired the Arena sheets (and some clothbound copies) and reissued them with cancel title pages. Although sixteen was the full compliment of plates for the copies bound in cloth, many of the hardbound copies issued by Arena and reissued by Neely have fewer inserted plates, generally three, but sometimes two or four. This copy has all sixteen plates. About 1897 Neely reprinted the novel on cheap pulp paper stock as a 25¢ paperback with two inserted plates. In Pope's sequel to JOURNEY TO MARS ... (1894), the protagonist and his Martian princess visit Venus, a younger world comparable to some stage of earth's prehistory. GOULD (Sir Francis Carruthers, 1844-1925, Caricaturist and Journalist)
Fine Original Signed Pen and Ink Cartoon, titled 'The Crop', signed with his initials, showing Lord Rosebery, (Archibald Philip Primrose, 1847-1929, 5th Earl), who in 1894 had taken over the Liberal Government from Gladstone on the latter's resigning from advanced age, standing on the shore, and pointing regretfully at plants growing in the sand, including the Marquess of Salisbury (now Conservative Prime Minister) and his nephew A.J. Balfour (Leader of the House of Commons) as a thistle, while a crowd of well-drawn faces, many in farmers' smocks and tall hats, look on, bewildered at the outcome of the general election, heads of Gladstone and previous ministers are seen drowning in the waves, 8¾" x 14" on card hinged in folding window mount 20" x 15", no date, circa June Gould made his name by his cartoon drawings of his fellow stockbrokers. By 1893 he was on the staff of the new Westminster Gazette (assistant editor, 1896), with its daily cartoon on the front page. Consistently Liberal in politics, his caricatures of Unionists were often eagerly sought by their subjects.Lord Rosebery had inherited from Gladstone a position on Home Rule for Ireland over which Parliament, the Liberals and the country were deeply divided. His government majorities dwindled, and an election was called after defeat in a 'snap' vote on a supply issue. With notes on the verso about publication, including '1895', 'No. 376', 'W', and on recto under mount 'Proof wanted for Tuesday next'.
