"The Angler" Scarborough. - 1895 1st edition. Small 8vo (130 x 190mm). Ppxvi,142. Frontispiece portrait, small photo ills in text. Binding B. Green cloth printed gilt. End-papers browned, ownership details, sl use. Good-plus. Francis "Max" Walbran was a well-known angling writer and fishing tackle dealer from Leeds. His writings remain a valuable guide to the methods and attitudes of the Yorkshire school of fishing which had developed in the 19th century. In his preface to this book Walbran says: "The present little work has in truth been a labour of love, as there is no fish that swims - no, not even excepting the trout, of which I am so fond as the 'graceful, gliding grayling'; and I trust from the following pages the reader will be able to gather a few useful hints, and have in future a better opinion of this despised fish." The book is divided into two parts: Part I - Grayling And How To Catch Them - has chapters discussing: times of spawning, distribution, size, flies and dressings and different fishing methods. Part II - Recollections Of A Sportsman - is a collection of angling articles and sketches, describing his fishing trips in different parts of the country. These include sea fishing off Redcar, and a fairly fruitless stay on the Artro in Llanbedr, and describe a day on the River Test with Frederick Halford. ".he covers a much wider field than Pritt exploited, seeing that he touches on the dry fly, maggot fishing and grasshopper fishing, as well as wet fly and swimming the worm. It is a good little book, giving very useful dressings of a dozen wet flies and a dozen dry ones." (Carter Platts). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Pygmies

London: Macmillan and Co., 1895. Translated by Frederick Starr. Octavo. Dark brown cloth, title gilt to the spine, blind rules at head and tail of both boards, dark green endpapers. With the grey marl dust jacket, title, price and publisher printed to the spine. 6 plates, illustrations to the text. A very slight crack at the rear hinge, else a wonderful copy retaining the jacket, which is a touch tanned at the spine and has some minimal chipping at the edges, but remains in remarkable condition. A really quite spectacularly well-preserved copy. First edition in English, originally published in Paris in 1887. Quatrefages de Bréau was professor of anthropology and ethnography at the Musée d'Histoire Naturelle from 1855 until his death in 1892. He published extensively on a wide range of subjects, but his work has been characterised as "somewhat deficient in deep philosophic insight " (Britannica, 1911), and he as an intransigent opponent of intellectual progress, and of Darwin in particular. However, the Darwin correspondence reveals that this was far from the case, showing him to have been collegially supportive of Darwin, and a sincere participant in the debate surrounding Origin … In a letter of July 1862, Darwin thanks him for for having "cordially" answered his questions on silkworm larvae - on which Quatrefages was a recognised expert - so "kindly & promptly", a subject on which he was quote Quatrefages extensively in The Variation of Animals and Plants under Domestication. Darwin also thanks Quatrefages for his "great kindness with respect to the Translation of the Origin, it is very liberal of you, as we differ to a considerable degree." Confirmation, perhaps, of Britannica's commendation of him as an "accurate observer … gifted with remarkable descriptive powers", and the conclusion that "his serious studies on the anatomical characters of the lower and higher organisms, man included, will retain their value, while many of his theories and generalizations, especially in the department of ethnology, are already forgotten." A superb copy.

The Long Arm, and other detective tales.

London, Chapman and Hall. 1895 - First Edition. Publisher's dark blue cloth lettered in gilt and delicately decorated with a floral design in light blue and grey. A most attractive book with slight wear to the extremties and bumping to the spine ends. A scarce collection of crime stories (mentioned in Greene and Glover), this copy from the library of the horrendously knowledgeable crime aficianado Eric Quayle, bearing his pencil notes to the flyleaf. A desireable little bit of crime fiction. Also notable for the fact that contributing author George Ira Brett's police-detective Battle predates his rather more famous namesake, the series character Superintendent Battle, created by Agatha Christie some 30 years later. Quayle; Detective Fiction. Graham Greene & Dorothy Glover; Victorian Detective Fiction [462], (1966). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

London: F. V. White & Co.,. 1895. original red cloth, front panel stamped in black and blind, spine panel stamped in gold and black, publisher's monogram stamped in black on rear panel.. Spine lean, cloth worn at spine ends and corner tips, lacks front. free endpaper, still a sound, good copy. (#129178). First edition. An ambitious attempt to address current social themes and utopian longings within the framework of a sensational adventure novel using occult and fantastic literary tropes, including two shipwrecks, castaways on a deserted island in the Antarctic ("the site of the most ancient of races, the almost mythical Atalanta ..."), the discovery of a subterranean lost race of souls resembling huge bats with human faces, Bangsian encounters with deceased celebrities, super-weapons and supernatural forces (both good and evil), anarchism, vampiric cannibalism, and considerable low- level Victorian eroticism throughout. (A note on the book's subtitle: while not set in the future, the novel is fundamentally reformational and "forward-looking" in thought.) The story begins in the Indian Ocean on board a luxurious ocean liner making a six-week "grand tour." However, a group of anarchists on the ship, led by a mad scientist type ("a scientific fiend ... who to discover a single scientific secret would coldly mutilate half of humanity"), intend to kill the passengers and crew with a poison gas bomb, hijack the ship, and take it to an island in the Antarctic where the Anarchists intend to start a colony. This they very nearly succeed at. But the ship runs aground on an uncharted island at night during a storm. The survivors (including both anarchists and passengers who have hidden themselves below deck) find a huge cavern which houses the souls of the dead, including some famous historical figures, among them Jesus, though the eschatology here is hardly orthodox. The story contrasts the sudden violent conversion of society as a whole sought by the anarchist with the gradual voluntary conversion of the individual sought by the religious. As an example, it contrasts a holy communion inside the cave with the unholy communion of two anarchists in a lifeboat who murder a beautiful half-naked woman in the moonlight and take turns drinking her blood until they are sated and fall asleep. The happier fate of another male/female couple amounts to a return to noble savagery, as well as a natural Christianity, making this story, among other things, a sort of new NEW PAUL AND VIRGINIA. The author does not quite succeed in bringing all the threads of his story into a unified tapestry, but this remains a formidable expression of fin-de-siecle apocalyptic imagination, and a notably rare book (this is the only copy we have seen in fifty years). Australian and New Zealand "Lost Race" Fiction in the Collection of Stuart Teitler (private list), p. 3. Clarke, Tale of the Future (1978), p. 21. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 166.         The poetical works Of Dante Gabriel Rossetti

Edited with preface by William M. Rossetti. A new edition in one volume. Ellis and Elvey, London, 1895. All rights reserved. Drypoint portrait frontispiece by G.W. Sherborne from a photograph taken in 1864, with tissue guard; pp.[xxxii]+380; original (v. note) dark green crushed Levant morocco very elaborately tooled gilt on sides and spine after a design by the author, lettered gilt on spine, doublures ruled and tooled gilt with small florets and leaves, again after a design by the author; French marbled end-papers; a.e. burnished gold. Fine copy. Despite the ‘New Edition’ on the title-page, this is actually, as William Rossetti’s Preface makes clear, the first collective edition of his brother’s original poems (without the translations). The binding, which is by Zaehnsdorf, is signed and dated 1895, suggesting that this copy was supplied by the publisher as sheets, and that this is its original dress. It reproduces, as far as the outside covers are concerned, though on a smaller scale, Rossetti’s design for the covers of the 1870 edition of the ‘Poems’, the tooling here being more perfect than the blocking on cloth of the originals, however, the brasses for that having been cut badly - though to speak more truly it follows more precisely the design of the binding of the two volume Collected Works of 1886, in its original envisagement, the lower of the two small panels on the sides having ten horizontal rows of circlets on the front and eleven on the back cover. The tools used on the doublures are based on elements of the end-paper design of the 1870 volume. A beautiful volume, and one of only a very small issue so bound. All books listed by Robert Temple are first editions unless otherwise stated.

Original portrait of Elihu Vedder (Inscribed by Vedder)

New York: G. C. Cox Photo, 1895. First edition. Fine. Original print (189 x 120 mm) on a grey cardboard mat (357 x 280 mm), inscribed by the subject, Elihu Vedder, "When this you see - remember me | Most Cordially yours Elihu Vedder 1895." Print and mat in Fine condition with just a touch of age-toning to the edge of the cardboard mat. A lovely portrait of a middle-aged Vedder, taken in 1895, or a few years before. Vedder, surviving as an artist, was vaulted into public prominence and enjoyed financial success as a result of his arrangement of the quatrians and illustration of "The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam" in 1884. His original illustrations for the 1884 "Rubaiyat" were exhibited by the Smithsonian American Art Museum in 2008. "Elihu Vedder was among the artists who became ardent admirers of the verses. He was known as a "visionary" artist who had no peer in depicting unusual, esoteric subjects. Living in Rome, he was removed from the bustling, modish art scene in New York, and his work took on a peculiar, antiquarian aura that complemented the rubáiyát." (Introduction to the exhibit by Richard Murray) George C. Cox of New York was, in his day, considered one of the finest portrait photographers in America. He opened his studio in 1883, and photographed the wealthy and famous for over a decade, among them the leading artists, politicians, writers, editors, and beauties of the time. Fine.

Les règles de la méthode sociologique. (exemplaire de G.-L. Duprat)

The Shoulder of Shasta

Westminster: Archibald Constable and Co, 1895. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. A Very Good copy of the first edition, first printing (color variations and linear indentation to front board, front free endpaper renewed, rear free endpaper lacking); Bram Stoker's exceedingly scarce fourth novel, a romance published two years prior to Dracula's release. Set in San Francisco and the mountains of northern California, the Daily Telegraph called it "[o]ne of the breeziest and most picturesque tales of life on the Pacific slope that has been penned for many a long day." A Very Good copy of this early Bram Stoker novel which, in our experience, is very difficult to find in a better condition than is the copy offered here, and which is quite scarce to the market in any condition.

1895. A Story of an Eastern River. London: T. Fisher Unwin, 1895. Original dark green cloth. First Edition of Joseph Conrad's first book, an edition believed to have consisted of 1000-1250 copies. Conrad, after meeting the real "Olmeijer" in East Borneo in 1887, gradually produced the manuscript of this book over the six years 1889-1895. He submitted it to Unwin for consideration in their "Pseudonym Library", using the pseudonym "Kamudi" (Malayan for "rudder") -- enclosing the return postage, so sure was he of its rejection. However, Unwin's reader Edward Garnett saw the manuscript's promise and accepted it for non-pseudonymous publication.~This copy is in the first state (as are most copies), with the letters missing from the last two lines of page 110. Condition is very good-plus, with very minor wear at the binding extremities and (as usual) with the green cloth on the spine slightly browned. Cagle A1a.1.
