Contes en Prose

Paris - Alphonse Lemerre, 1895. Paris - Alphonse Lemerre, 1895 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Leatherbound volume with gilt title to the spine, marble paper covered boards and marble paper pastedowns. Franois Edouard Joachim Coppe (26 January 1842 23 May 1908), was a French poet and novelist. He was born in Paris to a civil servant. After attending the Lyce Saint-Louis he became a clerk in the ministry of war, and won public favour as a poet of the Parnassian school. His first printed verses date from 1864. In 1869 his first play, Le Passant, was received with approval at the Odon theatre, and later Fais ce que dois (1871) and Les Bijoux de la dlivrance (1872), short poetic dramas inspired by the Franco-Prussian War, were applauded. After holding a post in the library of the senate, Coppe was chosen in 1878 as archivist of the Comdie Franaise, an office he held till 1884. In that year his election to the Acadmie franaise caused him to retire from all public appointments. He was made an officer of the Legion of Honour in 1888. Coppe was famed as le pote des humbles (the poet of the humble). His verse and prose focus on plain expressions of emotion, patriotism, the joy of young love, and the pitifulness of the poor. He continued to write plays, mostly serious dramas in verse, two in collaboration with Armand d'Artois. The performance of a short episode of the Commune, Le Pater, was prohibited by the government in 1889. Coppe published his first prose work in 1875 and went on to publish short stories, an autobiography of his youth, a series of short articles on miscellaneous subjects, and La Bonne Souffrance, a popular account of his reconversion to the Roman Catholic Church. His conversion was due to a severe illness which twice brought him close to death. He was also interested with public affairs, joining the most violent section of the Nationalist movement (while remaining contemptuous of the apparatus of democracy) and taking a leading part against Alfred Dreyfus in the Dreyfus affair. He was one of the founders of the Ligue de la Patrie Franaise. This volume bears the bookplate of The Right Hon. Sir Ronald Charles Lindsay. He served as British Ambassador to the United States of America from 1929 to 1939. Condition: The binding is tight and firm. There is some wear to the extremities including rubbing to the edges of the boards and spine. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright with the occasional handling mark and odd spot. There is a bookplate to the front pastedown. Overall the volume is in very good condition..

London - Seeley and Co., 1895. London - Seeley and Co., 1895 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. An historical and architectural study of the Palace of Whitehall, which was destroyed by fire in 1698. With many engraved illustrations throughout. The Palace of Whitehall (or Palace of White Hall) was the main residence of the English monarchs in London from 1530 until 1698 when all except Inigo Jones's 1622 Banqueting House was destroyed by fire. Before the fire it had grown to be the largest palace in Europe, with over 1,500 rooms, overtaking the Vatican and Versailles. The palace gives its name, Whitehall, to the road on which many of the current administrative buildings of the UK Government are situated, and hence metonymically to the central government itself. On 10 April 1691, a fire broke out in the much-renovated apartment of the Duchess of Portsmouth that damaged the older palace structures, though apparently not the state apartments. This actually gave a greater cohesiveness to the remaining complex. However a second fire on 4 January 1698 destroyed most of the remaining residential and government buildings; the diarist John Evelyn noted succinctly the next day, Whitehall burnt! nothing but walls and ruins left. Condition: In a green cloth binding with gilt lettering to the front board. Externally smart, with some minor shelfwear only. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and mainly clean, with just some foxing to the endpapers and the odd spot throughout. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED..

History of the Reign of Ferdinand and Isabella The Catholic

London - George Routledge and Sons, 1895. London - George Routledge and Sons, 1895 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A history of the reign of Queen Isabella I of Castile and King Ferdinand II of Aragon, the Spanish monarchs who reigned from 1469 to 1516. The title of Catholic King and Queen was bestowed on them by the Pope Alexander VI in 1496, for defending Catholic dogmas within their realms. They married on October 19, 1469, in the city of Valladolid; Isabella was eighteen years old and Ferdinand a year younger. Their marriage united both crowns under the same family. Although many historians, like John Elliot argue that the unification of Spain can essentially be traced back to the marriage of Ferdinand and Isabella newer historical opinions recognize that under their rule Spain was still a composite monarchy. Castile and Aragon would remain largely separate entities for decades to come. The court of Ferdinand and Isabella was constantly on the move, in order to bolster local support for the crown from local feudal lords. With engraved frontispiece of Christopher Columbus. Condition: In a half-calf binding. Externally smart, with some light wear to the extremities and spine. Internally, firmly bound. Prize bookplate to front pastedown. 1895.

(1822 -1890) Reference is printed image on page 13 of Vol. V. No. 1 January , 1896, #136& The newsletter was published by Fr. Jean-Marie Raphael LeJeune out of the back room of a church on the Kamloops reserve between May 1891 and Dec. 1905. Intended primarily for the local Aboriginal audience, most of the content was written in Chinook jargon with some translation into English and French. At its peak, The Wawa had a circulation of about 2,000 copies and was read as far away as France.& An important 19th century British Columbia newsletter, the Kamloops Wawa. The Kamloops Wawa was a multi-lingual publication written in English, French and Chinook Jargon.& Chinook jargon, a trade language (or pidgin) was once spoken by an estimated 100,000 people along the west coast from Oregon to Alaska. With more than 100 Aboriginal languages spoken in the area, it was one of the most diverse linguistic regions in the world. Chinook jargon evolved as a way of bridging the communication gap created by this diversity.& Derived from various Aboriginal languages, and later English and French, this jargon was widely spoken by natives, traders, and settlers, but could not be easily translated to written form. As a means of bringing literacy to Aboriginal people, Catholic missionaries in the late 1800s developed a phonetic shorthand that could accurately represent the jargon.& Eventually, most of the native population learned to speak English, and Chinook jargon fell into disuse. The language may have disappeared altogether had the written legacy of the Catholic missionaries not remained. The Wawa, which is Chinook jargon for 'chat', is an important record of that legacy.
