Würzburg, Stahel'schen K. Hof- und Universitätsbuch und Kunsthandlung, Ende 1895. 8vo. In the original printed wrappers. Offprint from "Sitzungsberichten der Würzburger Physik, -Medic. Gesellschaft", but published before the journal-issue. Lower right corner of front wrapper with repair after a 10 cm long tear, no loss of text. "Gratis überreicht / von der Verlagsbuchhandlung" stamped to lower left corner of front wrapper. Light overall soiling to wrappers, internally fine and clean. No title-page, as issued. 10 pp. + 1 blank leaf.. First printing, rare offprint in the original printed wrappers published before the journal-issue, of Röntgen's landmark discovery of X-rays: "the foundation stones of roentgenology" (Garrison & Morton) and "one of the most important advances in the history of scientific development" (Heirs of Hippocrates). Here, Röntgen unveiled a new form of matter and offered a new revolutionary method for medical diagnosis, being "the greatest advance in diagnostic medicine since the invention of the stethoscope" (Norman), crystallography and radioactivity - "Practically every science was improved by the new technique" (Dibner).Röntgen's was the first Nobel Prize in physics, given in 1901 "in recognition of the extraordinary services he has rendered by the discovery of the remarkable rays subsequently named after him." In order to ensure priority for his discovery, Röntgen first published the paper as an offprint from "Sitzungsberichte der Physikalisch-medicinischen Gesellschaft zu Würtzburg" in 1895. "Roentgen sent his paper, "Eine neue Art von Strahlen (Vorlaufige Mittheilung)" to the Würzburg Physical-Medical Society for publication in its proceedings. The article appeared in the December 1895 number of the society's journal, although that number probably was not actually published until January 1896." (Norman)Apart from a second paper on X-rays in March 1896 and a third in 1897, Röntgen wrote no further papers on the subject, leaving the elucidation of the nature of X-rays and application to others."Their [X-rays] importance in surgery, medicine and metallurgy is well known. Incomparable the most important aspect of Röntgen's experiments, however, is his discovery of matter in a new form, which has completely revolutionized the study of chemistry and physics. Laue and the Braggs have used X-rays to show us the atomic structure of crystals. Moseley has reconstructed the periodic table of the elements. Becquerel was directly inspired by Röntgen's results to the investigation that discovered radio-activity. Finally J. J. Thomson enunciated the electron theory as a result of investigating the nature of the X-rays." (DSB)."On Friday, 8 November 1895, Röntgen first suspected the existence of a new phenomenon when he observed that crystals of barium platinocyanide fluoresced at some distance from a Crookes tube with which he was experimenting. Hertz and Lenard had published on the penetrating powers of cathode rays (electrons), and Röntgen thought that there were unsolved problems worth investigation. He found time to begin his repetition of their experiments in October 1895. Although others had operated Crookes tubes in laboratories for over thirty years, it was Röntgen who found that X rays are emitted by the part of the glass wall of the tube that is opposite the cathode and that receives the beam of cathode rays. He soon discovered the penetrating properties of the rays, and was able to produce photographs of balance-weights in a closed box, the chamber of a shotgun, and a piece of nonhomogeneous metal. The apparent magical nature of the new rays was something of a shock even to Röntgen, and he, naturally, wished to be absolutely sure of the repeatability of the effects before publishing. The first communication on the rays, on 28 December, was to the editors of the Physical and Medical Society of Würzburg, and by 1 January 1896 Röntgen was able to send reprints and, in some cases, photographs to his friends and colleagues. Emil Warburg displayed some of the photographs at a meeting of the Berlin Physical Society on 4 January. The Wiener Presse carried the story of the discovery on 5 January, and on the following day the news broke around the world. The world's response was remarkably swift, both the general public and the scientific community reacting in their characteristic ways. For the former, the apparent magic caught the imagination, and for the latter, Crookes tubes and generators were promptly sold in great numbers. After a royal summons, Röntgen demonstrated the effects of X rays to the Kaiser and the court on 13 January. He was immediately awarded the Prussian Order of the Crown, Second Class. In March 1896, a second paper on X rays was published, and there followed a third in 1897, after which Röntgen returned to the study of the physics of solids. " (DSB)"Aside from its obvious applications, Roentgen's discovery galvanized the world of physics and led to a rash of further discoveries that so completely overturned the old concepts of the science, that the discovery of X-rays is sometimes considered the first stroke of the Second Scientific Revolution. (The First Scientific Revolution is, of course that which included Galileo and his experiments on falling bodies). Within a matter of months, investigations of X rays led to the discovery of radioactivity by Becquerel. The importance of the discovery was well recognized in its own time. In 1896 Roentgen shared the Rumford Medal with Lenard and in 1901, when Nobel Prizes were set up.the first to be honoured with a Nobel Prize in Physics was Roentgen." (Asimov)."Their importance in surgery, medicine and metallurgy is well known. Incomparably the most important aspect of Röntgen's experiments, however, is his discovery of matter in a new form, which has completely revolutionized the study of chemistry and physics. Laue and the Braggs (406) have used the X-rays to show us the atomic structure of crystals. Mosely (407) has reconstructed the periodic table of the elements. Becquerel (393) was directly inspired by Röntgen's results to the investigation that discovered radio-activity. Finally J. J. Thomson (386) enunciated the electron theory as a result of investigating the nature of X-rays." Autograph musical quotation signed ("Massenet") from Manon

. Small quarto, 160 x 180 mm. 4 measures from Act III dated Paris, 1895, notated in ink. On paper with "Manon" within decorative cartouche printed in sepia. Inscribed to the opera singer "Mademoiselle Alma Dalma a une charmante artiste." Together with a small broadside printed in sepia advertising the published edition. Browned, left edge slightly defective from former mount, just affecting quotation.. "[Massenet] was the most prolific and successful composer of opera in France at the end of the 19th century and into the beginning of the 20th..." "... Begun in March 1882, Manon was conceived as an opera- comique with some speech over music and a more continuous and integrated structure than usual. It called for some 18th-century pastiche and a more intimate manner. It was completed later that year, and although Massenet visited Prevost's own rooms in The Hague as a spur to inspiration, not much was actually written there. Its premiere at the Opera-Comique in January 1884 launched the opera on a dazzling international career and confirmed Massenet's now unchallenged position as the leading opera composer of his generation in France. Its popularity has never dimmed. Wealth and honours now flowed, so that Massenet was able to handle his career henceforth with something of the detachment, if not quite the fastidiousness, that we associate with Verdi, picking his librettists, his theatres and his singers with care."         The Poetical Works of Alfred Lord Tennyson

01 - London - Macmillan and Co., 1895. 01 - London - Macmillan and Co., 1895 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A beautifully presented set of the works of Alfred Lord Tennyson in a red slipcase. The People's Edition. Containing In Memoriam, The Voyage of Maeldune, The Spinster's Sweet-Arts, The Lover's Tale, Maud, The Brook, Anoch Arden, A Dream of Fair Women, Will Waterproof, The Death of Oenone, Rizpah, Idylls of the King (in six volumes), The Princess (in two volumes), Juvenilia, The Lady of Shalott, Demeter, and Locksley Hall. Also with the original dustwrappers. Tennyson used a wide range of subject matter, ranging from medieval legends to classical myths and from domestic situations to observations of nature, as source material for his poetry. The influence of John Keats and other Romantic poets published before and during his childhood is evident from the richness of his imagery and descriptive writing. He also handled rhythm masterfully.         Original Signed & Dated Watercolour Titled:] Shore of Oak Bay (B.C.).

1895 - 1895. Watercolour, ca. 20,5x29,5 cm (8 x 11 ½ in). Signed Mower Martin '95. Watercolour matted under glass in a recent molded gilt wood frame. A very good watercolour. Watercolour not examined out of the frame. This attractive skillfully executed watercolour shows the rocky shoreline of Oak Bay in the foreground and Ten Mile Point in the background across the bay. "Thomas Mower Martin was an English-born Canadian landscape painter dubbed "the father of Canadian art." Martin produced landscapes, animals, still lifes and portraits in oils, watercolours and etchings. He was one of a group of artists given passes by the Canadian Pacific Railway to paint landscapes in western Canada - they became known as the "Railway Painters". Earlier he had travelled and painted landscapes through eastern Canada and the United States, and also provided illustrations for two books by A & C Black, Canada and Kew Gardens. He was a founding member of the Ontario Society of Artists in 1872, and charter member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1880, and was also a member of the Royal British Colonial Society of Artists (1909). Mower Martin exhibited widely as an artist during his lifetime and his works can be found in many public and private collections, including Windsor Castle in England" (Wikipedia).

The Second Jungle Book (First Edition, Dust Jacket, Publisher's Presentation Copy & Bookmark)

London: Macmillan, 1895. First U.K. Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. About Fine/Good. Publisher's blue cloth with title and decorations stamped in gilt onto upper board and spine, 12mo (7-1/4 inches tall), all edges gilt, colored endpapers, illustrated throughout with jungle theme line drawings. Volume with spine ends softened and a tiny bump to the foot of the lower board near spine, contemporary gift inscription in ink "Jack. .." at head of the contents page. Gilt is bright and text is clean, lacking the foxing commonly found. DJ is worn and soiled with tears and chipping, especially at spine ends and top edge, some splatters to upper spine panel and tape repairs verso. The front panel has "Jack" written in a juvenile hand multiple times in pencil and is partially erased. The bookmark has minor creases and fading to the head, else fine. An intact and still robust survivor of one of Kipling's most enduring works. The 1895 Macmillan edition of The Second Jungle Book is a relative rarity when found complete in it's original century old dust jacket. It was the first illustrated Kipling UK dust jacket issued and is found in only a handful of institutions. Auction house records document the presence of a jacket (in various states of completeness - 1964, '73, '92 & '97) just four times. This jacketed copy also has the publisher's circular "PRESENTATION COPY" blind stamp on the title page and was thus reserved for a patron, friend or colleague. Found within, is a publisher's bookmark, with the printed date of "10.9.95" at it's foot. Macmillan's own records, held in the British Library, show "12 November 1895" (Richards, A85) as the official publication date of the first UK edition of The Second Jungle Book - following by just three days the publication of The Century Co.'s first US edition. The bookmark has "Works by Rudyard Kipling" printed at it's head, and shows The Second Jungle Book as being available prior to either of the known US or UK publication dates, at a price of "6s". Cutler & Styles, in "Modern British Authors: Their First Editions" (1930) show the London edition of The Second Jungle Book as being the first, rather than the US edition. An unusual and evocative piece of advertising ephemera, showing an earlier selection of works by Rudyard Kipling, the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1907. Ref. Richards, A85; Cutler & Styles p. 81.

        Contes en Prose

Paris - Alphonse Lemerre, 1895. Paris - Alphonse Lemerre, 1895 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Leatherbound volume with gilt title to the spine, marble paper covered boards and marble paper pastedowns. Franois Edouard Joachim Coppe (26 January 1842 23 May 1908), was a French poet and novelist. He was born in Paris to a civil servant. After attending the Lyce Saint-Louis he became a clerk in the ministry of war, and won public favour as a poet of the Parnassian school. His first printed verses date from 1864. In 1869 his first play, Le Passant, was received with approval at the Odon theatre, and later Fais ce que dois (1871) and Les Bijoux de la dlivrance (1872), short poetic dramas inspired by the Franco-Prussian War, were applauded. After holding a post in the library of the senate, Coppe was chosen in 1878 as archivist of the Comdie Franaise, an office he held till 1884. In that year his election to the Acadmie franaise caused him to retire from all public appointments. He was made an officer of the Legion of Honour in 1888. Coppe was famed as le pote des humbles (the poet of the humble). His verse and prose focus on plain expressions of emotion, patriotism, the joy of young love, and the pitifulness of the poor. He continued to write plays, mostly serious dramas in verse, two in collaboration with Armand d'Artois. The performance of a short episode of the Commune, Le Pater, was prohibited by the government in 1889. Coppe published his first prose work in 1875 and went on to publish short stories, an autobiography of his youth, a series of short articles on miscellaneous subjects, and La Bonne Souffrance, a popular account of his reconversion to the Roman Catholic Church. His conversion was due to a severe illness which twice brought him close to death. He was also interested with public affairs, joining the most violent section of the Nationalist movement (while remaining contemptuous of the apparatus of democracy) and taking a leading part against Alfred Dreyfus in the Dreyfus affair. He was one of the founders of the Ligue de la Patrie Franaise. This volume bears the bookplate of The Right Hon. Sir Ronald Charles Lindsay. He served as British Ambassador to the United States of America from 1929 to 1939. Condition: The binding is tight and firm. There is some wear to the extremities including rubbing to the edges of the boards and spine. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright with the occasional handling mark and odd spot. There is a bookplate to the front pastedown. Overall the volume is in very good condition..
