Poems (Inscribed by the American publisher Fred Holland Day)

T.Fisher Unwin and Copeland and Day, London and Boston 1895 - A charming book with the tissue guard protecting the illustrated title page. Bound in finely woven linen cloth and sumptuously gilded on the front and the rear boards, depicting a winged warrior standing on a writhing serpent with splendid Art Nouveau floral designs on either side of him. The panels are signed by the artist: "HGF" (H. Granville Fell) in a gilded square. The heavily gilded spine is darkened and frayed at the top and bottom of the spine ends. The top edges are gilded as well. Very clean and tight throughout. The front endpaper is lacking, and the half-title page is inscribed by Fred Holland Day: "To one who loves these better than their publisher (which is cryptical if not symbolical) FHD (monogram encircled) May 1904." The English issue consisted of 750 copies, and it is likely this issue had about the same, though the total number is not mentioned in Wade (#16). The Copeland and Day slug appears on the title page; it is also gilded at the bottom of the spine. Fred Holland Day (Boston, 1864 to 1933) was an American photographer and publisher. He was among the first in America to advocate that photography should be considered a fine art.Day spent much time among poor immigrant children in Boston, tutoring them in reading and mentoring them. One in particular, the 13-year-old Lebanese immigrant Kahlil Gibran, went on to fame as the author of The Prophet.Day co-founded and self-financed the publishing firm of Copeland and Day, which from 1893 through 1899 published about a hundred titles. The firm was influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement and William Morris's Kelmscott Press. The firm was the American publisher of Oscar Wilde's Salomé, illustrated by Aubrey Beardsley; The Yellow Book periodical, also illustrated by Beardsley; and The Black Riders and Other Lines by Stephen Crane. Brilliants: A Setting of Humorous Poetry in Brillant Types

New York: De Vinne Press, 1895. 96pp. Second issue. Inscribed and dated March 7, 1907 by the publisher and famous American printer Theodore Low De Vinne, to Harold A. Holmes. Delicate head and tail-pieces and initials printed in red accompany "the beautiful 4-point Brilliant type made by Miller and Richard of Edinburgh" showcased in this work. Bradbury quotes Ruth Adomeit as calling it "one of the most sought after miniature books because of its typographical beauty," and states that "a strong argument can be made that this is the first American private press miniature book." An important and finely produced masterpiece, made even more attractive by the concise history of miniature books written in the preface by De Vinne, which is considered by Spielmann to be one of the best ever written. Very light rubbing to extremities, else fine in full morocco with an elaborate gilt design of intertwining vines on both covers. A.e.g. (Spielmann 117; Bondy, p. 98; Bradbury p. 216; Bromer/Edison p. 47). (2 1/4 by 15/8; 57x40mm).

        Outing Magazine: Volumes 21-25 (October 1892 -- March 1895)

The Outing Company Limited, New York 1895 - Five bound volumes. Quartos. Three-quarter morocco with textured maroon boards, raised bands, and gilt spine lettering. About near fine, with rubbing at the extremities and some offsetting to the endpapers. The bound volumes contain 30 issues of this sporting magazine which began publication in 1882 as the *Wheelman* before changing its name to *Outing and the Wheelman: An Illustrated Monthly Magazine of Recreation*, then simply *Outing* until it ceased publication in 1923. The magazine published a range of fiction and nonfiction related to the sporting life, covering many popular activities of the day such as hunting, fishing, equestrian, and boating, as well as emerging sports such as ice hockey, football, and aeronautics, often with accompanying photographs and illustrations. These volumes are no different with scores of vintage photographs of late 19th Century football teams and three early illustrations from Frederic Remington. Football in particular was rapidly gaining popularity at colleges across the country despite -- or perhaps because of -- its violent nature. Included within these pages are more than half a dozen articles by Walter Camp, the father of American football. While most feature the Ivy League teams of Yale, Harvard, Princeton, and others, one article focuses solely on West Coast teams including Stanford and the University of California. An interesting window into American sporting life at the turn of the century and the early development of football. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

London Henry Sotheran 1895 - First edition. With a great profusion of full-page plates, textual illustrations and fine full-page gravures. Folio, publisher’s original white polished buckram over boards with pictorial decorations and titling on the upper cover and spine, t.e.g. x, 236 pp. Some foxing to the prelims, otherwise internally bright and clean, externally some wear and darkening to the cloth, sturdy, a very attractive copy. IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION AND A BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED WORK BY MILLAIS. ONE OF THE BEST ILLUSTRATED BOOKS OF AFRICA. "South Africa, with its attraction for the sportsman and the naturalist, has already given birth to so many books by abler pens than mine, that some apology seems necessary for the appearance of these pages. Let me say then at once that though they are occupied in the main with dissertation on, and adventures in pursuit of big game, I have endeavored as far as possible to avoid trespassing on the domain of the standard authorities on this subject. My object has been rather t o supplement from personal observation what is already known of such animals as I came across during a recent tour in South Africa; to present to the best of my ability a true picture of life in that country, whether of man, beat of bird; and to give the sportsmen of that period what help I can as a guide to the hunting grounds and how to work them to advantage. My drawing will no doubt be disappointing to admirers of the grim and gory, who know the lion only as presented in picture-books, with mane trailing on the ground, claws extended, and mouth full of blood and foam. Exception too may be taken by the uninitiated to the fantastic attitudes of some of the birds and beasts here represented. But that I cannot help. I have drawn only what I have seen, and as I have seen it, and it is not my fault if my subjects declined to display themselves in the approved conventional form." From the Author’s Preface. They have a place in French history, these men; their trade, which by the beginning of the seventeenth century had learnt to cluster round the Pont Neuf, has traveled through vicissitudes peculiar to itself, and survived revolutions destructive of interests vaster than its own; these humble vendors of old books have been proclaimed as nuisances, obstructing the highway, denounced as receivers of stolen goods, and informed against as cheapeners of the well-housed stock of the authorized booksellers who kept shop, and paid rent, rates, and taxes. M. Características: Pasta dura en cartoné con media tela editorial . En muy buen estado. Ligeramente desgastada de las orillas pero es insignificante esto. 1895 - Illustrated. New York: The Merriam Company, n.d. [1895]. 3 pp undated ads. Original violet cloth decorated in dark violet. First Edition, issued a volume in Merriam's "Violet Series." This is Stevenson's famous tale about the anatomist "K---" and his need for cadavres (based undoubtedly upon the career of Robert Knox, 1793-1862). RLS actually wrote this tale in mid-1881, to be part of a collection of supernatural tales which he referred to as "creepers"; he never completed the project, but a few of the tales remain. Ironically this grisly tale's first appearance was in the Pall Mall Gazette's 1884 Christmas Extra (substituted at the last moment for a briefer RLS tale, in order to fulfill a commitment of sufficient length). It is equally ironic that such a story would first appear in book form in this cute little violet volume decorated with flowers.~This is a remarkably fine copy, unusually free of soil or wear (the lettering on the spine is slightly faded as always); there is no bubbling of the cloth, which is atypical for this book. THE BODY-SNATCHER has become quite a scarce book in fine condition. Beinecke 608. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[Broadside]: Coming Soon! Parsons & Pool's Original Uncle Tom's Cabin and Tennessee Jubilee Singers. The Only Company on the Road to-day presenting the old-time manuscript version of Uncle Tom's Cabin

Prov[idence], R.I.: Whatcheer Print. [circa 1895?]. Tall broadside printed on purple paper. Illustrated with a composite wood engraving of scenes from the play. 9.25" x 23". A couple of tiny nicks and holes, near fine. A broadside advertising the dramatic production of Uncle Tom's Cabin by Parsons & Pool's Famous Ideal Uncle Tom's Cabin Company and Tennessee Jubilee Singers. Dramatic and musical versions of Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin were produced almost immediately upon publication of the novel in 1852 and, like the book, became an instant success with the public, propelling the book's sales to even greater heights. These numerous "Tom Shows," as they became known, continued to be produced for more than 50 years after the book's release.Little seems to be known about the Parsons & Pool version of Uncle Tom's Cabin aside from some indications the company toured between 1893-1895, in the New England and Mid-Atlantic area. Accompanying the production were the Tennessee Jubilee Singers. The name suggests they may have be related to the African-Americans singing group The Fisk Jubilee Singers from Fisk University that brought jubilee singing into prominence but perhaps more likely the group was assembled for this particular production and given a similarly sounding name to attract customers. Whether they performed during the production or in support of it is not clear. .

        Studien über Hysterie

Franz Deuticke, Leipzig & Vienna 1895 - Beginning of PsychoanalysisFreud, Sigmund (1856-1939) and Josef Breuer (1842-1925). Studien über Hysterie. [6], 269pp. Leipzig & Vienna: Franz Deuticke, 1895. Half morocco ca. 1895, extremities and corners slightly rubbed; preserved in cloth drop-back box. Fine.First Edition. Studies in Hysteria, which gives the first detailed account of the free-association method, is customarily regarded as the starting-point of psychoanalysis. Breuer had discovered the "cathartic" method of curing hysteria in the early 1880s while treating the patient who would later be immortalized as "Anna O."; this patient, who exhibited a myriad of severe hysterical symptoms, found that the symptoms would disappear when she told Breuer the details of their onset. (Jones gives "Anna O.," whose real name was Bertha Pappenheim, a large share of the credit for inventing what she called the "talking cure.") Freud learned of this interesting case from Breuer shortly after its termination in June 1882; it made a strong impression on him, and a few years later he began using a combination of hypnosis and the cathartic method in his own neurological practice. From this Freud gradually developed the method of free association, in which the patient was encouraged to say whatever came into his mind however "nonsensical" or "irrelevant," since Freud believed that the patient's statements provided clues about the network of associations already established in his mind, and would thus lead the therapist to the source of the patient's neurosis. "It was through devising the new method that Freud was enabled to penetrate into the previously unknown realm of the unconscious proper and to make the profound discoveries with which his name is imperishably associated" (Jones, Life and Work of Sigmund Freud, I, p. 265). Broadside or poster]: Taffy's Revised Football Rules

McIntosh Publishing Co., New York 1895 - Broadside poster advertising the 1895 book. 12.5" x 18". Illustrated by F. Richard Anderson. Printed in black with a whimsical football illustration on pale green paper. Very good with small chips to the extremities affecting no printing, and a small piece of tape on the reverse (to no purpose). The illustration depicts a man in a fleur-de-lys uniform with a leather(?) nose guard, opposed in the distance by some rather goofy looking football players (some with "Y," "H," "C," and "P" -- presumably for Yale, Harvard, Columbia, and Princeton or Penn). Anderson was a very successful Broadway costume designer, which probably explains the *tres sportif* uniform. The poster for a very early football book, following Walter Camp's *American Football* (considered the first book on the sport) by four years. Rare. *OCLC* locates one copy of the 36 page book at the University Club in New York City, and no copies of this poster.

Stephanos Carathéodory, was an Ottoman Greek who had studied law in Berlin and then served as secretary in the Ottoman embassies in Berlin, Stockholm and Vienna. Stephanos had married Despina Petrocochino, who came from a Greek family of businessmen who had settled in Marseille. At the time of his son Constantin's birth, the family were in Berlin since Stephanos had been appointed there two years earlier as First Secretary to the Ottoman Legation. The Carathéodory family, originally from Bosnochori or Vyssa, was well established and respected in Constantinople, and its members held many important government positions. Stephanos Carathèodory was the father of Constantin Carathéodory (or Constantine Karatheodori) (Greek: ???sta?t???? ?a?a?e?d???) (13 September 1873 – 2 February 1950) was a Greek mathematician. He made significant contributions to the theory of functions of a real variable, the calculus of variations, and measure theory. His work also includes important results in conformal representations and in the theory of boundary correspondence. In 1909, Carathéodory pioneered the Axiomatic Formulation of Thermodynamics along a purely geometrical approach. Known correspondence of Carathéodory-Einstein can be seen as facsimile in Einstein Archives Online (11 items). Fables Choisies de Florian. De J.-P. Claris, De Florian, Illustree Par Des Artistes Japonais Sous La Direction De P. Barboutau, Tokio, Volumes 1 & 2

Librairie Marpon & Flammarion a Paris & Shueisha a Tokio, Tokyo & Paris 1895 - Meiji 28 (1895), small 8vo (6 x 8 in - 15 x 20.1 cm), crepe paper folded sheets, spine covered, silk string ties, text in French, 56 pages total (each volume) including the covers (28 folded pages). In each volume there there are 24 numbered pages of text and fourteen double page color woodblock prints. The fourteen double page plates (28 pp) and the front and back covers (4 pages) are not numbered. The front covers are a single page color woodblock print. The cover woodblock print and the 14 internal double page woodblock prints all have the artist's seal (han). In total the two books contain 112 pages which include 28 double page color woodblock prints and 48 numbered pages of text. There are 38 (18 in volume 1 and 20 in volume 2) small text type black and white woodcut illustrations of birds, animals and plants interspersed throughout the book. The front covers are nicely illustrated in color. The back covers have two small decorative illustrations (crests). While the front and back covers are folded pages, they are affixed over a stiff but pliable inner piece. This makes the front and back folded pages (covers) much firmer than the internal folded pages which are not reinforced. ~ Condition. Both books are in Very Good condition. The covers, front and back - inner and outer, are moderately stained and soiled. This condition is probably caused by the adhesive used to apply the folded pages forming the covers to an inner stiffener paper. There is pencil writing on the inside of the front cover of Volume 1. Following the covers and adjacent pages, the books are in Fine condition with no staining, foxing, marking or soiling. All pages are uncut/unsevered at the fold and there are no tears to the pages. A solid and well preserved pair of books. ~~ More information, to include digital pics, available on request
