Stephanos had married Despina Petrocochino, who came from a Greek family of businessmen who had settled in Marseille. At the time of his son Constantin's birth, the family were in Berlin since Stephanos had been appointed there two years earlier as First Secretary to the Ottoman Legation. The Carathéodory family, originally from Bosnochori or Vyssa, was well established and respected in Constantinople, and its members held many important government positions. Stephanos Carathèodory was the father of Constantin Carathéodory (or Constantine Karatheodori) (Greek: ???sta?t???? ?a?a?e?d???) (13 September 1873 – 2 February 1950) was a Greek mathematician. He made significant contributions to the theory of functions of a real variable, the calculus of variations, and measure theory. His work also includes important results in conformal representations and in the theory of boundary correspondence. Fables Choisies de Florian. De J.-P. Claris, De Florian, Illustree Par Des Artistes Japonais Sous La Direction De P. Barboutau, Tokio, Volumes 1 & 2

Librairie Marpon & Flammarion a Paris & Shueisha a Tokio, Tokyo & Paris 1895 - Meiji 28 (1895), small 8vo (6 x 8 in - 15 x 20.1 cm), crepe paper folded sheets, spine covered, silk string ties, text in French, 56 pages total (each volume) including the covers (28 folded pages). In each volume there there are 24 numbered pages of text and fourteen double page color woodblock prints. The fourteen double page plates (28 pp) and the front and back covers (4 pages) are not numbered. The front covers are a single page color woodblock print. The cover woodblock print and the 14 internal double page woodblock prints all have the artist's seal (han). In total the two books contain 112 pages which include 28 double page color woodblock prints and 48 numbered pages of text. There are 38 (18 in volume 1 and 20 in volume 2) small text type black and white woodcut illustrations of birds, animals and plants interspersed throughout the book. The front covers are nicely illustrated in color. The back covers have two small decorative illustrations (crests). While the front and back covers are folded pages, they are affixed over a stiff but pliable inner piece. This makes the front and back folded pages (covers) much firmer than the internal folded pages which are not reinforced. ~ Condition. Both books are in Very Good condition. The covers, front and back - inner and outer, are moderately stained and soiled. This condition is probably caused by the adhesive used to apply the folded pages forming the covers to an inner stiffener paper. There is pencil writing on the inside of the front cover of Volume 1. Following the covers and adjacent pages, the books are in Fine condition with no staining, foxing, marking or soiling. All pages are uncut/unsevered at the fold and there are no tears to the pages. A solid and well preserved pair of books. ~~ More information, to include digital pics, available on request

Kiepert's grosser Hand-Atlas Statistischer Text von Dr. Paul Lippert und M. Busemann. Dritte Auflage.

Berlin: Geographische Verlagshandlung Dietrich Reimer, [c. 1895]. - Folio, (20 1/8 x 13 1/8 inches). 45 double-page chromolithographed maps. Handsome binding of modern half green morocco, original publisher's green cloth boards, gilt. Provenance: With the bookplate of Christopher Henry Beaumont Pease, Lord Wardington (1924-2005), his sale, Sotheby's, October 18, 2005. Third edition, first published in 1893. Includes 45 beautifully chromolithographed double-page maps, showing the current political boundaries throughout the world. This atlas features several interesting maps of the Americas and Australia. One map of the United States delineates the various states and territories with colored outlines, but incorrectly identifies Alaska as a state rather than a territory. A map of the "Continent of Australia and New Zealand" identifies the various regions as "Englische Colonien," "Französische," "Niederländische," "Portugiesische," and "Deutsche." Another shows "Eastern North America" with insets of the "Northeastern States" (Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland) and Niagara. Kiepert is widely recognized as one of the more important scholarly cartographers of the second half of the nineteenth century. He was particularly interested in the historical geography of the classical world as well as the Ottoman Empire, "where Kiepert travelled numerous times, gathering enough data to produce several major maps of the Ottoman world between the 1840s and 1890s. Kiepert was also responsible for some of the first detailed ethnic maps of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Balkan Peninsula. In the course of many years, he compiled maps of much of the rest of the world as well, in addition to cartographic materials for schools "Kiepert's maps are almost invariably clear and easy to read, and they are as accurate as the scholarship of the day permitted. His maps of the historical geography of the classical world have inevitably come to seem a bit old-fashioned in light of later research, but his maps of the Ottoman Empire and surrounding countries remain extraordinarily valuable records of conditions in the period when they were compiled" (University of Chicago Map Collection online).

Red, Blue and Yellow Parrot Set Against Foliage.

1895 - Oil on board. Signed and dated lower left. 28.5 x 38.5 cm approx. Framed. A beautiful oil painting by the renowned German artist Joseph Wolf (1820-99). Joseph Wolf was the finest wildlife illustrator and painter of the Victorian era. His work transformed the portrayal of animals in nature and inspired a new generation of artists. From 1848 Wolf was working for the British Museum and became the choice of illustrator for numerous explorers and collectors. The majority of his work hung in stately homes and royal palaces around Britain, yet remained almost unknown to the general public as he avoided selling through galleries. '[Wolf was] without exception, the best all-round animal artist who ever lived' (Sir Edwin Landseer, eminent Victorian animal painter). Whether creating a charcoal sketch or a dramatic oil painting, he had a unique talent for capturing the very essence of an animal. Unlike his contemporaries, Wolf painted wild creatures in their natural setting. By revealing their moods and behaviours, he allowed us to glimpse the reality of their everyday lives. His work paved the way for the wildlife art and illustration of today. (NHM Online). [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Japanese Children

Tokyo.: [Tokyo Toyodo].. No date. Ca. 1895.. 10 double-page color lithographs, plus 8 (unpaginated) pages of text at the rear. Bound accordion style with paper-covered boards and color pictorial cover label. Boards are detached with paper loss at the corners, small area of light dampstaining at the lower left corner. Interior in very good condition. The publisher's label has been removed from the rear paste-down. The text relating to the last image in the book states that "when the war between Japan and China was at its height, playing at soldiers was all the rage with boys." This suggests a date of publication shortly after 1895, following the first Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895 and preceding the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905. There were apparently different editions of this work, with different covers and variant images. The first image in this edition is of two children, one reading, one writing. The text states that "This picture takes us back to the days when education in Japan was, for the mass of the people, a matter of private effort, the present extensive system of government schools, subordinate to an Education Department, dating only from 1871." The other images are: girls playing battledore and shuttlecock; boys flying kites; the Doll's Festival; children playing kotoro kotoro in Ueno Park; boys on bamboo stilts; boys in a procession; children playing in a stream; boys wrestling (sumo). A series of quite lovely woodblock prints. .

1895 - A Tale of Two Sieges of Paris. London: F. V. White & Co., 1895. 16 pp undated ads (paginated as the end of the book). Original rose-mottled cloth. First Edition. This is one of Henty's historical tales for adults, rather than for boys, which is why it is not published by his usual publisher Blackie.~This is a very good-plus copy: the spine is a little faded and the gilt lettering does not stand out well against such light-colored cloth, and there is a small mark near the bottom of the front cover; that said, there is very little actual wear, and the brittle original patterned endpapers have only minor cracking. These Henty tales for adults are much scarcer than his tales for boys. Newbolt 65.1. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
