        Autograph Letter Signed

Four page Autograph Letter Signed from D.P. Brown of St. Onge, South Dakota to his cousin James Breckenridge of Stewartsville, Missouri, dated 25 January 1895 on stationery of Adoniram J. Plowman, Attorney at Law of Deadwood. Old folds from mailing, else near fine. Brown relates that he is "about 12 miles from Deadwood & 30 miles from Indian Reservation" and (his idiosyncratic spelling retained) "I am still alive and am married and living in the Black hills on a Horse Ranch of Judge Plowmans. I got my Rib broken last Saturday was leading a Horse to water and he started to run and I stayed with him to long." He relates that after traveling through Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska, Colorado, New Mexico, and Kansas, he is: "getting 300 a year and am at no expense but for clothing. Think I shall strike for more money or quit." A relatively interesting cowboy letter. The recipient was likely a member of the prominent Breckenridge family (the letter mentions his family in Kentucky). Plowman was a noted Deadwood judge. .

        The American Commonwealth

New York: Macmillan and Company 1895 - Two volumes (complete), 8vo., blue cloth lettered in gilt; newspaper reviews affixed to volume one; tender hinges; lightly soiled. Third and finest edition, completely revised, with four new chapters. Howes B-906. A presentation copy, inscribed: "Signed at the request of Mr. Dewitt Miller of Philadelphia by James Bryce, London, April 9th, 1895," on the half-title page; with Miller's notes on the back pastedown. [together with] tipped-in autograph letter signed by Bryce to Miller. London: July 10, 1902. Single leaf, 8vo., folded to form four pages, House of Commons letterhead; unpublished ---- Most important in the third edition of Bryce's masterpiece were new chapters on "The South since the War" and "Present and Future of the Negro." Regarding the controversial chapter on Tammany which gave rise to a lawsuit for its suppression, Bryce informed lyceum lecturer Dewitt Miller (1857-1911), a fellow member of the London Bibliographic Society: "The first edition was not suppressed. It was quickly sold out. Not a single copy was withdrawn. The chapter on which the action by A. O. Hall was founded, was omitted from the second edition because the litigation was pending. It was a mere piece of blackmailing. I wrote the chapter on Tammany myself. I had always intended to do so, but had not had time to do it when the second edition was being prepared" ---- Viscount James Bryce, historian, jurist, and politician, first visited the United States in 1870. His second tour, 11 years later, was followed by a third in 1883. On his return to Great Britain, Bryce began writing "The American Commonwealth," the first edition of which was published in 1888. His aim was to investigate "not only the party system, but the ideas, temper, [and] habits of the sovereign people." Bryce's study of nineteenth-century public opinion blazed a trail which, like Alexis de Tocqueville's "Democracy in America," has been continually quoted as a standard authority on the workings of the "American system." A compelling association with a distinguished provenance. Shipping extra [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Historical and Biographical Record of the Cattle Industry and the Cattlemen of Texas and Adjacent Territory

Saint Louis 1895 - Original gilt-stamped calf with vignette of a longhorn on the cover; rebacked in cloth, repairs at board edges. Minor soiling and wear internally. One of the "Big Four" Cattle books, with biographies of some 448 cattlemen and extensive contemporary account of the Texas Cattle trade. One of the so-called "big four" cattle books and, in our experience, the most difficult to obtain. The size and nature of the binding on this book often results in its being found in poor condition. "Supposedly most of the first edition was destroyed in a warehouse fire, hence its rarity today" - Merrill. "The book contains a wealth of information, and is a cornerstone in any range library" - Six Score. Merrill Aristocrat, p.17; Six Score , 24; Adams Herd 593; Dobie, p.100; Dykes Kid 29; Graff 891; Jenkins Basic Texas Books 34; Howes C820, "b;" Rader 1891; Saunders 2846; Vandale 44.         THE STOLEN BACILLUS and Other Incidents

1895 - London: Methuen & Co., 1895. 32 pp ads dated September 1895. Original dark blue cloth decorated in gilt. First Edition of this collection of fifteen tales, along a science fiction vein -- Wells's first book of short stories and his second volume of science fiction (after THE TIME MACHINE). The title tale concerns an anarchist who steals what he thinks is cholera bacteria with which to infect all of London -- when in fact the bacteria only turn victims bright blue (a "marvellous twist from the macabre to the ludicrous" - Smith). Also included are "The Flowering of the Strange Orchid," "The Lord of the Dynamos" and "The Flying Man."~This is a handsome copy, virtually without wear -- fine except that the spine gilt is slightly less bright than the front cover gilt. In our experience Wells's less-known science fiction volumes, such as this one and THE PLATTNER STORY, are considerably scarcer than his better-known ones such as THE WAR OF THE WORLDS, THE INVISIBLE MAN and THE TIME MACHINE. Hammond C1; Wells Soc. 6; Currey p. 523. Housed in a custom clamshell case. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Collection of 13 original photographs, mostly at 'Morwenstowe' station at Wallaga Lake, including a group portrait of Aboriginal schoolchildren

circa, 1895. Collection of 13 albumen prints measuring approximately 110 x 155 mm, each with early cursive annotations to verso; some prints a little faded yet very good condition overall. Collection of 13 original photographs documenting daily life at Wallaga Lake during the later nineteenth-century, including a significant group portrait including Aboriginal children at Corunna school circa 1895. Four Aboriginal children are included in the portrait of 20 schoolchildren, and an inscribed note to the reverse of the photograph identifies this as the school at Corunna (located some 10 kilometres north of Wallaga Aboriginal reserve). The reserve was created in 1891 and became home to over 90 Yuin Aboriginal persons. The children in the group portrait were under the care and instruction of Sister Ivy, who is identified by name in a separate portrait photograph included in this collection. Several other photographs detail the homestead 'Morwenstowe' located upon the shores of Wallaga Lake, showing the clearing and improvement of the farm as well as boating, coaching and other leisure activities. Three photographs in the collection depict high country pastures around Tumut; the remainder concern the Wallaga Lake region and hinterlands.

The cover design is the same as found other Ogawa collotype books of this period (stylized scale pattern with waves in silver). This is one volume of a two volume set, both with this title, that was published ca 1892. However, the volume does not indicate it is a part of a set. While all lettering is in English, the book is assembled Japanese style with the title cover at the back and intended to be opened and read from back to front. The cover bears a printed price of "2.50 Yen." The 12 collotypes are titled: 1) Tea picking at Uji, 2) Old court dress, 3)Costume, in former times of a daughter of the higher class, 4) Hair-dressing, 5) Battle-dore and shuttle-cock play, 6) Koto playing, 7) The art of flower arranging, 8) The ceremony of "Cha-no-yu", 9) Musical entertainment, 10) A Jinrikisha ride to the flower show, 11) Cotton-spinning and 12) Carpenters at work. ~ Condition. The book is in Good condition. The covers have numerous chipped and torn areas but they are firmly attached by the cord ties. Each plate is protected by tissue guard and has a descriptive title below the image on the plate. One plate in Volume II - "The Toilet" - is rather unusual for an Ogawa book in that is shows a young lady with no cloths from the waste up. While such photographs were common in the tourist trade of this period, it appears that Ogawa refrained from using them in the books he published. Each book contains a rarely seen slip colophon inserted loose in front of the inside back cover. These colophon slips make it possible to definitively date these books to 1895. Normally books in this set are found without a colophon as none was printed on the a pages actually bound into the book. The book is bound with two cord ties. Each cord tie uses four stab holes and the cord is tied off in an "X" pattern through the holes at the front. ~ Condition. Both books are in Very Good condition. The condition is much better than the norm. The covers have light soiling and minor edge wear, particularly at the corners. There are ca 1cm stain areas in the areas under the cord ties. On Volume II one of the two bottom cord ties is broken. The back cover of Volume II has a 3 x .5 cm scraped area at the bottom edge. The binding of both books is solid and tight. The plates are clean and free of foxing or staining. ~~ Bulky set and extra postage will apply. ~~~ More information, to include digital pictures, available on request.

Autograph Notes for his Emancipation Day Address, January 1, 1895

Four leaves of notes in the hand of Booker T. Washington, unsigned, written on the rectos of Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute stationery, and headed in his hand: "Emancipation Address Montgomery, Ala." and dated "Jan. 1 '95." The pages are of irregular sizes, apparently culled from scrap paper around his office, and are pinned together with an old straight pin. Washington was a talented improvisational speaker, and rarely wrote his speeches out whole, delivering them from notes and talking points such as these -- usually a list of phrases that would presumably trigger an idea or anecdote. For example, this speech begins with the following phrases on separate lines: "Two flags. Ahead of all Negroes. In and out of slavery. Ignorance costs more than ed. Intelligence rules (Indians)," and so forth. This particular speech however, was an important precursor to Washington's landmark "Atlanta Compromise Speech." On page four of these notes, appears the phrase "Cast down bucket," wording that nine months later would become the essence of the catch phrase that symbolized one of the most important speeches ever delivered by an African-American.On September 18, 1895 Washington spoke before a predominantly white audience at the Cotton States and International Exposition in Atlanta. His "Atlanta Compromise" address was one of the most important and influential speeches in American history, particularly among those outside the sphere of politics. In the speech, he related an anecdote to the audience that became the catch phrase for both the speech and Washington's philosophy: "A ship lost at sea for many days suddenly sighted a friendly vessel. From the mast of the unfortunate vessel was seen a signal, 'Water, water; we die of thirst!' The answer from the friendly vessel at once came back, 'Cast down your bucket where you are.' A second time the signal, 'Water, water; send us water!' ran up from the distressed vessel, and was answered, 'Cast down your bucket where you are.' And a third and fourth signal for water was answered, 'Cast down your bucket where you are.' The captain of the distressed vessel, at last heeding the injunction, cast down his bucket, and it came up full of fresh, sparkling water from the mouth of the Amazon River. To those of my race who depend on bettering their condition in a foreign land or who underestimate the importance of cultivating friendly relations with the Southern white man, who is their next-door neighbor, I would say: 'Cast down your bucket where you are'--- cast it down in making friends in every manly way of the people of all races by whom we are surrounded." In the speech, Washington went on to urge the white audience members to do the same as he recommended to his own race: to cast down their buckets where they were, in order to reap the benefits of friendship, labor, and the profits that could be reaped by utilizing the talented and industrious members of the black race who were their neighbors.Despite some occasionally expressed resentment about Washington's perceived role as an accommodationist, few individuals of any race or time period compiled such a record of accomplishment in the face of more concerted opposition. An exceptionally important artifact presaging a pivotal moment, not only in black history, but in the history of America. .

MacDonald's second (and last) adult fantasy novel. "It has parallels with PHANTASTES (1858) and shows the slight influence of Carroll, but it is easily the strangest product of Victorian fantasy.
