        Pony Tracks (With ALS)

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1895. First edition. First edition, first printing. Very good or better, showing slight edgewear to the extremtities, tips; spine titles slightly darkened; slight wear to the spine cloth at crown and foot. All in all, however, a significantly more attractive copy than is usually encountered. Previous owners bookplate to front pastedown; gift inscription on the front free endpaper stating "...from Frederic Remington," but not in Remington's hand. Laid in is an (apparently unrelated) one page note from the artist, with his New Rochelle address, to an unidentified fellow artist, requesting passes for an Arts Club exhibition; the note --in fine condition, folded once for mailing-- is signed in full by Remington. A bright and desirable copy of Remington's first book, with the bonus of an ALS with its own not inconsiderable visual appeal.

[Caption title]: Manifesto of the Associated Anarchists. To Comrades, Friends and Sympathisers of the International Anarchist Communist Movement

[No place: no publisher. 1895]. First. Presumably, the first and only edition. Self-wrappers, [8]pp. Some general soiling, and mild creases, very good. Signed at the end in type, "C.T. Quinn" followed by an ornamental device; beneath, in purple letters: "The Associated Anarchists. 'Anarchy is Order,' Group No. 1". Although a manifesto from a group of associated anarchists sounds a bit antithetical, this "Group No. 1" managed to output this now exceedingly rare tract. The Associated Anarchists were short-lived, as was their political organ, The Alarm. The group was ridiculed in W.C. Hart's Confessions of an Anarchist (1906) who referred to Quinn as the "Christian Anarchist" and accused the group as being juvenile. Hart also alleged that the AA misappropriated George Bernard Shaw's writings and beliefs on anarchy, and was scornful that the group was doing what anarchists shouldn't do: organize. OCLC locates a copy in the Netherlands, cf. 81434974. Not in COPAC. .

Photograph Album from Virginia and West Virginia

Oblong octavo. Flexible cloth with blank black leaves. 240 photographs of different sizes and processes. Minor wear and some oxidizing to some of the photographs, overall very good. A few are captioned, usually with first names only. Undated, but spanning circa 1895-1920. Location not immediately obvious but reportedly the album had a Virginia origin, and there are many photographs from a railroad and logging location that display the post office for Mullins (now Mullens) in southern West Virginia. A wide variety of images that seem to center around a few young women, probably sisters, beginning near the end of the 19th Century and progressing through the first decade or so of the 20th. The young women are shown in a variety of poses and outfits: in bathing costumes, humorously eating bananas, picnicking, and courting. There are also pictures of various sporting activities including tennis, fishing, croquet, canoeing, and a baseball game near the railroad tracks. Curiously there is an image of John Mulbetsch, All-American football player for the University of Michigan (Mulbetsch later coached at Marshall College in West Virginia). There are also numerous photos that feature an imposing factory in the background. A substantial number of images are devoted to lumber mills, house building, surveying, and the construction of the railroad, presumably at or near Mullins, and the transformation of the mountainous and rustic area into a town, including several images of rudimentary businesses such as The Railroad and Miners Pharmacy and the Busy Bee Restaurant. .

        The Novels

London: J. M. Dent and Company,, 1895. Edited by Reginald Brimley Johnson. In ten volumes. With illustrations by William C. Cooke. 10 volumes, small octavo (171 × 108 mm). Original light green cloth, spines and front boards lettered in gilt, facsimile author's signature to front boards in gilt, top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Front free endpapers a little browned, spines ever so slightly rolled and some bumping to tips, boards just a little marked, a very good set. After Richard Bentley the fledgling London publisher J. M. Dent was the next to take up Jane Austen's novels for publication. The first Dent ten-volume set of the novels, published in 1892?-98, is notable as the first to have any critical apparatus. This set here comprises fifth editions with the exception of Sense and Sensibility which is a fourth edition.

Les Mois Douze Compositions D'Eugene Grasset graves fur bois & imprimes en chromotypographie

      G. De Malherbe (1895), Paris - 32 x 24.5 cm. Series of twelve color plates, one for each month, designed by the calendar of the Parisian department store of La Belle Jardiniere., image sheet size approximately 20 x 15.2 cm. In the early 1890's Grasset began experimenting with a new form of printing called chromotypography invented by his friend, Firmin Gillot. This calendar was printed in "Gillotage," a version of chromoypographie where the plates are engraved on wood and printed on vellum. Both Arwas and Murray Robertson date this calendar to 1896, but it was offered in the May 15, 1894 issue of La Plume (which was dedicated to Grasset's work). La Plume offered the calendar for sale on vellum at 5 francs, quoting it as "extremely rare." Grasset spent approximately 20 years working for La Belle Jardinere, designing additional calendars in 1899 and 1904. GORDON RAY p.465. Grasset "developed an early version of Art Nouveau to which he subsequently remained faithful, developing it constantly until 1900." Plates loose as issued in lettered gray wrappers, separated at spine, some light marginal toning at very edges outside the image area. In fine custom gilt lettered cloth portfolio with silk ties.         Les Mois Douze Compositions D'Eugene Grasset graves fur bois & imprimes en chromotypographie

Paris: G. De Malherbe, (1895). First edition. Hardcover. No Dust Jacket. 32 x 24.5 cm.
