Scarce - Original Tuscan Wood Book Cover

Italy, 1895. Siena, Tuscany, circa 1895. An original exquisite and pictorially symbolic Biccherna styled "tavolette" (wood book cover), coloured with tempera and mineral paint, hand crafted by famous Italian Sienese painter Icilio Federico Joni, who is especially remembered for his masterful reproductions of the medieval Biccherna covers. Slightly repurposed for the early nineteenth century, the boards are bound portfolio style with a leather spine for paper manuscripts as opposed to vellum, and further feature integral document pocket to each board, and an elegant floral patterned mint green satin lining. Also with a separate satin covered folder loosely placed within, bearing a metallic monogram 'MRS' fixed to upper corner, and containing four uninscribed double leafs. Volume measures 30,5 x 22 x 2,5 cm. Crack to front board resulting in some chips to paint, otherwise in very good condition, the boards retaining remarkable colour and stellar imagery. The Archives of the State of Siena holds a collection of original wood covers from the thirteenth to seventeenth centuries, currently displayed in the Palazzo Piccolomini, Museo delle Tavolette di Biccherna [Museum of Biccherna Tablets]. Having entered some of the most important book collections worldwide, including those of Borghese, Hoe and Wilmerding, Joni's nineteenth century tavolettes are in their own right exemplary works of high art, and are classified as some of the most valuable book covers today. In the late nineteenth century, Icilio Federico Joni (1866-1946) so skillfully reproduced Siena's original 'Tavolette della biccherna' that one could not easily differentiate between his work and earlier original. To perfect his craft, Joni studied written accounts of the medieval covers before meticulously creating his own. A highly celebrated self-professed forger, in 1932 he published an autobiography to describe his work, titled, "Le memorie di un pittore di quadri antichi" [Memoirs of a Painter of Antique Pictures]. In 1936 an English edition appeared, titled "The Affairs of a Painter." Joni essentially created an exclusive revival of the Tavolette di Biccherna, and produced an exceptionally symbolic motif with this example. Rendering a theme of prosperity, political grandeur, nobility and the artistry of the Middle Ages, he captured the essence of his city's ancestral legacy, while also memorializing the pivotal revolution of 1355. On the front board is a painting of "Pax", the Roman goddess of peace, sitting on her throne and holding an olive branch. One of three shields underneath the scene, albeit chipped, appears to read "LIBERTAS" (Freedom), which is reminiscent of the deposition of the Noveschi mercantile-banking oligarchy, and the foundation of a democratic government and civilian council, and is consistent with the theme depicted on the rear board. [Pax is Latin for Peace. In Roman mythology Pax was the goddess of peace, equivalent of the Greek goddess Eirene. Pax was first worshipped during the rule of Augustus. She had a magnificent temple (sanctuary) on the Campus Martius which was built by the emperor Vespasian and called the Ara Pacis, and another temple on the Forum Pacis. Pax was depicted in art with olive branches, a cornucopia and a scepter. A festival in her honor was held on January 3rd. The daughter of Jupiter and Justice, Peace was often associated with spring.] The manuscript text to the rear cover is in the medieval Siena dialect and commemorates the insurrection of 1355 which overthrew the Government of the Nine. Drawing from thirteenth and fourteenth century covers, this one reads: "Justa[?], e L'Entrata, e L'Escita, de la General, Gabella del Magnifico Comuno di Signa AD 1355" (Orders[?] & Income & Expenses of the General Gabella of the Magnificent City of Siena, 1355 AD). Also interesting to note, the text mentions the Gabella. Whilst commonly known that the Biccherna made painted wood covers in which to preserve the city's official ledgers, the artist may have been drawing attention to the lesser known fact that the custom was also practiced by the other financial judiciary of Siena - the Executors of the Gabella. [Ministeri del Tesoro e della Finanza Biccherna e Gabella: Ministries of the Treasury and Finance Biccherna and Gabella: The Gabella was responsible for collecting and managing gabelles, a form of taxation. The Biccherna was responsible for the administration of public revenues.] In keeping with custom, five coats of arms are depicted, three of which are illustrated with dragons, possibly representative of specific nobles from the district "Contrada del Drago" [Dragon] who served a term in the ministry of finance. Traditionally, the painted wood covers made in the Middle Ages for the financial accounts of the two Sinese magistracies Biccherna and Gabella, were inscribed in manuscript to date and denote its contents. Every six months a term ended, each of the Provveditori and Esecutori being replaced, and new registers begun. It was at this time that the boards of the retiring official would be painted, often bearing his family's arms and those of his colleagues, some allegory, or a notable event from his term, political or otherwise, depending on the era. These traditions are beautifully manifested in Joni's work. The Republic of Siena was a state originating from the city of Siena in Tuscany, in central Italy. It existed for over four hundred years, from the late 11th century until the year 1555. In 1286 the Nova government was established to rule Siena. The Nova was backed by the Noveschi, a political party formed by the noble families that sat on the council. Eventually, the Noveschi Party grew to include not only include members of the Nova council, but many prominent noble families of the city. Under the guide of the Nova and the Noveschi, Siena grew in both economic and militaristic dominance, enjoying a relatively trouble-free period of wealth and urban development. It also saw a surge in the arts during the rule of the "Government of the Nine" (1287-1355). Siena was one of the earliest and most important banking centers of Europe and Italy. While every city had an office for recording revenue and expenses, Siena was unique in that its officials gave special attention not only to the documents, but also to the books in which they were kept, in particular the covers. Beginning in 1257, wood covers were made to protect vellum manuscripts, the earliest being illustrated with scenes of important financial overseers (provvedditori) or men who were privvy to the secrets of the clergy (cameralingo), the coats of arms of these men, and sometimes depicting secrets known only to select officials. Allegorical, religious, and mythological scenes soon became popular, and by the mid-fifteenth century, covers were reflecting current events such as a monarch's coronation, natural disasters, grand celebrations. Although leather was used even earlier in bookbinding and eventually was the material of choice, wood was chosen for its weight, most often for the keeping of vellum manuscripts, in order to prevent the parchment from buckling. They were most often fastened with clasps and adorned with ivory or metal work. The tavolette (wood covers) of the Biccherna and Gabella were painted by a prominent artist. Alas, the Black Death Plague of 1348 decimated three fifths of the population. Some ill-fated financial enterprises and political turmoil also made room for a revolution. Subsequently, in 1355, with the arrival of Charles IV of Luxembourg in the city, the population rose and suppressed the government of the Nova council and expelled any family associated with the Noveschi Party. They established the Governo dei Dodici (Government of Twelve) being a government of twelve representatives of the people, assisted by a council of twelve nobles with a popular majority. This was to be short-lived, however, being replaced by the Quindici (Fifteen) reformers in 1385, the Dieci (Ten, 1386-1387), Undici (Eleven, 1388-1398) and Twelve Priors (1398-1399) who, in the end, relinquished the city's seigniory to Gian Galeazzo Visconti of Milan in order to defend it from the Florentine expansionism. . Very Good.

[Blunt, Reginald-Inscribed, with W.M. Rossetti Letter & another] The Carlyle's Home

London: George Bell and Sons, 1895. First edition. Original parchment backed, brown paper covered boards with elaborate gold blocked design on front cover. An eccentric book having to do with Carlyle's residence in No. 5 Cheyne Row, near where the Rossetti's lived (see ALS laid in); signed by the author Blunt on the title page. Inserted are two autograph letters in the text, The first appears at pp. 30-31, an autograph letter signed, 1 1/2 pages by F. D. Maurice (prolific author and Socialist) from Guys Hospital where he was chaplain: "My dear Pollock, ... I am afraid that I must break this engagement for Mrs. Maurice asked some relations of ours who are just returned from Australia here today & cannot put them off. You must either..." He continues in another vein, "You must either therefore carry your plan into effect... if you go, remember it is 5 Cheyne Row & not Walk at which Carlyle lives..." As well, an autograph letter from William Michael Rossetti appears opp. p.48, 2 1/2 pages on printed letterhead of 3 St. Edmund's Terrace, etc., 21 January, 1913, with the original holograph envelope to S. M. Ellis. Rossetti explains that his advanced age prevents a more detailed reply to his questions and responds, "My brother [i.e. Dante Gabriel Rossetti] with his 3 sub-tenants, entered on the tenancy of 16 Cheyn Walk in Oct. 1862. Meredith was there at times... He had a bedroom there, & also a sitting room... The idea that the house had been Sir Thomas More's (or rather that a house of his had been on the same site) was a sort of local tradition, but I suppose erroneous.. There was some notion about Princess (Queen) Elizabeth & a mulberry-tree in the garden was spoken as hers." A nice 'extra-illustrated' copy, assembled by the author himself obviously with two letters having to deal with tenants at Cheyne Row. Corners chipped, boards sl. worn, spine soiled, overall a very good copy of a fascinating assemblage.

Sarah Bernhardt. La Dame aux Camilias. Theatre de la Renaissance.

1895 1895 - Poster for Sarah Bernhardt's appearance in Dumas play,"La Dame aux Camélias" at the Théâtre de la Renaissance. Paris: Champenois 1896. Published in "Les Maitres de l'Affiche", 1897. Plate no. 144. * Les Maîtres de l'Affiche (The Masters of the Poster) refers to 256 colour lithographic plates used to create a very significant art publication during the Belle Époque in Paris, France. The collection, reproduced from the original works of ninety-seven artists in a smaller format, was put together by Jules Chéret, the father of poster art.By the 1890's the streets of French cities were enlivened by large, colourful posters. The poster had not only caught the fancy of the public, but its best examples were already being regarded as true works of art (specifically, as fine prints) to be exhibited, reviewed in journals, collected and reproduced in a more manageable form. In the last five years of the 19th century, Imprimerie Chaix was to play a great part in codifying, hallowing and perpetuating the ebullient spirit of the Belle Epoque. The renowned set of 256 prints were created by Imprimerie Chaix, forever to be known as a set as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche. Each print was rendered as a separate sheet measuring 11 x 15 inches. [27.9 x 38.1 cm]. The set was compiled in a unique way: Every month for 60 months - from December 1895 through November 1900 - subscribers received a wrapper containing four consecutively numbered prints. On 16 occasions (each of the five Decembers, each of the Junes, and the March and September of the final three years) the monthly wrapper also contained a bonus plate, not a poster reproduction but a specially created lithograph. The compilation of this set of original prints makes up the complete suite known as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche.

The first two volumes of the journal were mainly concerned with the freethought movement, primarily consisting of articles on religious criticism; in its later years, Reitzel declared Der arme Teufel to be an anarchist publication. Reitzel was a staunch supporter of the imprisoned Haymarket anarchists, and later, of Alexander Berkman during his confinement. Indeed, Reitzel's journal was reportedly the only radical serial Berkman was allowed to receive while he was in prison. "Emma Goldman noted Reitzel's importance for facilitating American exposure to European radical thought," describing him as a "brilliant writer" and his Arme Teufel as "the one German paper in the States that kept its readers in contact with the new literary spirit in Europe" (Donaldson, Randall P. The Literary Legacy of a "Poor Devil": The Life and Work of Robert Reitzel (1849-1898) (New York: Lang, 2002), p.50-51). Rare; we find no copies for sale in the trade (August 2015); OCLC finds a single location (U.Cincinnati). 22 tabloid issues (ca.36cm); printed newsprinted wrappers; 8pp per issue. Publication sequence runs as follows: Vol.XI, Nos.565-567; Vol.XII, Nos.595, 597, 599-603; Vol.XIII, Nos.631-640, 642-643. Edgeworn, with occasional creasing and short tears; quite tender at folds, with splits starting; mailing label of previous owner to front wrappers of nearly all issues (Felick Jelineck); Good overall. Also included are three issues in poor condition (nos.566-567), badly browned, edges brittle, and split along center folds, but nonetheless complete.

        Chocolat Carpentier.

Poster for Carpentier Chocolat. Paris: Courmont 1895. Published in "Les Maitres de l'Affiche", 1897. Plate no. 83.. Les Maîtres de l'Affiche (The Masters of the Poster) refers to 256 colour lithographic plates used to create a very significant art publication during the Belle Époque in Paris, France. The compilation of this set of original prints makes up the complete suite known as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche

        The Red Badge of Courage.

      D. Appleton and Company, New York 1895 - First edition, first printing with page [235] advertising the three works of Gilbert Parker's Best Books, and the last page of advertisements (page 238) ending with The Land of the Sun, by Christian Reid; last gathering, including ads on laid paper. Octavo, original publisher's tan cloth. In near fine condition with a touch of rubbing. From the library of noted collector Donald G. Drapkin, with his bookplate, contemporary name on the endpaper. Housed in a custom half morocco box. An exceptional example. An abbreviated version of The Red Badge of Courage was first serialized in The Philadelphia Press in December 1894. This version of the story, which was culled to 18,000 words by an editor specifically for the serialization, was reprinted in newspapers across America, establishing Crane's fame. Crane biographer John Berryman wrote that the story was published in at least 200 small city dailies and approximately 550 weekly papers. In October 1895, a version, which was 5,000 words shorter than the original manuscript, was printed in book form by D. Appleton & Company. "Stephen Crane, with no more military experience than his lively imagination could cull from Battles and Leaders of the Civil War and from Tolstoy, told so graphically how a raw recruit feels in battle that The Red Badge of Courage must be regarded as the first artistic approach to the war. It pictures no historical figure or event, except that Chancellorsville is its setting, but its sense of the helplessness and meaninglessness of the common soldier, maneuvered by superiors and circumstance, is a brilliant achievement in impression. Its illusion of authentic experience has made it a minor classic of the war" (Leisy, 158-59). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Architectural History of Harrow Church Derived from a Study of the Building

Harrow, England: Wilbee, J. C. , 1895. Contemporary full morocco binding of a dark brown color, and with hubbed spine in six panels. Boards with gilt rules and small gilt decorative motifs, and with small diaper design in blind to the fields. Spine states, in fairly crisp, gilt-stamped letters, "Harrow Church, Gardner." Spine with elaborate and crisp gilt-stamped design. Generally unbumped spine head and tail and with slightly bumped lower corners, The leather binding is exceptionally clean and almost entirely free of scratches, and with minor rubbing along the gutters. The spine is lightly and evenly sunned to a medium brown color. The text block is firmly bound in. 9.25 x 6 inches. With handsome marbled paper pastedowns and FEPs. T.E.G. With xii and 95 numbered pages, including an introduction, the main text, a glossary of technical terms employed, and a postscript. With XL full-page B&W plates plus Plate XLI, a pristine pull-out architectural ground plan of the church, The Church of S. Mary Harrow on the Hill. Also with 15 additional B&W illustrations. We can find no foxing or other blemishes, save for an instance of off-setting. The book is astonishingly clean overall. Front pastedown with the stunning late 19th century armorial bookplate of Harrow School, including the motto "stet fortvna domvs." Near the top of the bookplate is written in a neat ink hand, "E. W. Swan, Term prize for Drawing, 1900' given May 31st, 1900." Hence a presentation copy. Off-setting between p. 72 and the opposite plate, likely due to insertion of a newspaper clipping or similar. Neatly pasted on to a blank rear FEP is a newspaper clipping, "Harrow Church 850 Years Old." Above the clipping in a neat ink hand is, "Times, Jan. 17th 1944." Neatly pasted on to the opposite blank rear FEP is a B&W photo of Harrow Church, doubtless from the same newspaper article. Finally, neatly pasted on to the rear pastedown is a very small -- and somewhat bizarre -- news magazine clipping, "A Railway Victim." The clipping pertains to an interesting gravestone in Harrow-on-the-Hill churchyard regarding a hapless man who was run over and killed by a railway train in 1833, shortly after rail was introduced to Harrow and vicinity. Else a very clean copy. A Very Good copy. Scarce in any condition. An altogether engaging and handsome volume and a pleasure to hold in hand.. First Edition. Full-Leather. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
