Four volumes from the personal library of Clinton Dent, comprising two bound volumes of pamphlets, an album containing two posters for lectures by Dent, newspaper cuttings, programmes, and a copy of Martin Conway’s The Alps from End to End (first edition).

      - Pamphlets: Two volumes numbered VI and VIII to the spines, containing 12 offprints, 13 booklets and 6 extracts (thirty-one items in all), several with plates or maps, occasional browning, generally in good order, bound for the most part with the original wrappers in contemporary buckram with contrasting lettering pieces, bookplate of Dent at front of each volume. Album: 140pp., comprising numerous newspaper cuttings, 2 posters for lectures by Dent on mountaineering, and 6 programmes for theatrical or musical evenings, bound in contemporary half morocco, rubbed, Dent’s bookplate at front. Conway, William Martin. The Alps from End to End. Westminster: Archibald Constable, 1895. First edition. 8vo. pp. xii, 403; frontis. and numerous plates after originals by A. D. M’Cormick; minor age-toning, else good in the original buckram-backed cloth, gilt, t.e.g, minor wear to head of spine and to rear board, Dent’s bookplate at front. Clinton Thomas Dent (1850-1912) made important ascents in the Alps and the Caucasus during the period known as the silver age of Alpinism. He made the first ascent of the Aiguille du Dru in 1878, and eight years later climbed Gestola in the Caucasus with W. F. Donkin. He was president of the Alpine Club from 1886 to 1889, and often lectured on mountaineering and related themes. He also followed a career in medicine, and became the Senior Surgeon at St. George’s Hospital, and Chief Surgeon to the Metropolitan Police. The present four volumes from Dent’s library contain materials relating to his many interests. The bound volumes of pamphlets include offprints and booklets presented to Dent by prominent mountaineers of the day: Vittorio Sella, Douglas Freshfield, Arthur Harper (inscribed by Harper). Also present are two catalogues of mountain paintings for exhibitions at London galleries, one with a preface by Dent and Freshfield, and a history of the Caucasus Museum printed in German in Tiflis with a covering letter from the author to Dent. Other content relates to Dent’s career as surgeon, including addresses given at St. George’s Hospital , or papers such as Robert Bowles’s Sunburn on the Alps (1890). The extracts mostly offer reviews or articles by Dent himself, including his essay ‘Can Mount Everest be Ascended?’, and a book review of Conway’s The Alps from End to End. The accompanying album, presumably compiled by Dent himself, contains numerous newspaper cuttings on miscellaneous subjects, including mountaineering, the Boat race, a letter from Charles L. Dodgson (Lewis Carroll), the British Association, politics, medicine, the British North Borneo Company (with a copy of their bookplate pasted in; a relative, Alfred Dent, was a director), obituaries of e.g. Darwin, and much else; several of the items were written by Dent. The programmes contain details of theatrical and musical performances that include members of the Dent family, and the two posters advertise Dent’s lectures, one from 1872.         John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1895 - 1895 Wisden Rebound Like Hardbacks , Special.

1895. Hi and Welcome to our Store. We have sold many rare Wisdens through WisdenAuction so we are listing a few more spare early hardbacks and a full run of 1897-1948 in hardback, please enjoy them. -------------------------------------------------------------------- This is a very special 1895 Wisden, rebound by Wisden in the middle of the 20th Century to mimic an 1896 hardback, a quirky Wisden that will appeal to some. The similarities to a hardback are that the paste downs are yellow (with a Liverpool cricket club stamp) , the gilt on the covers and spine are identical to that of an 1896. It is slightly smaller by 1/8th inch , smoky top to page block and severe foxing around photo plate, the uniqueness is what will appeal. Hard to price up but Gorringes sold a similar copy (spine less like an 1896) for £750+20% and selling for less than we purchased it for.

THE WESSEX NOVELS (all 18 volumes) + WESSEX POEMS

1895. London: (first 17 volumes) Osgood, McIlvaine & Co.; (18th volume) Macmillan and Co., 1895-1913. Plus: WESSEX POEMS and Other Verses. With Thirty Illustrations by the Author. London: Harper & Brothers, 1898. [Together, 19 volumes.] Original dark blue-green cloth with front cover monogram device in gilt. First Uniform and Complete Edition of Hardy's prose -- including three first editions (four including WESSEX POEMS). Osgood McIlvaine produced the original sixteen volumes, containing all of Hardy's fiction written until then, individually during the years 1895-1896; his last novel, JUDE THE OBSCURE, first came out during those two years, so that first edition was published as Vol. VIII of these volumes. (Due to the outcry over the daring subject matter in Hardy's last novels, he would write no more fiction; for the 32 years of his life remaining after JUDE, he would write only verse.) Subsequent to the first 16 volumes, two collections of previously-unpublished fiction, THE WELL-BELOVED (1897) and A CHANGED MAN (1913) came out -- the latter by Macmillan -- so these two were first published as the final volumes in this series, Vols XVII and XVIII.~Even the volumes that are not first editions are very important:~Osgood, McIlvaine's edition is an important one. The text of every novel was thoroughly and carefully revised, the topography (names and distances) corrected where necessary, chapters frequently retitled, and much rewriting done. In addition Hardy prepared a special preface for each volume (prefaces which have a peculiar interest when read consecutively as the work of 1895-96)... [Purdy]~Thus the Wessex Novels consitutes the definitive edition of Hardy's fiction -- the version of each novel as he ultimately wished it to endure. (All but JUDE had originally appeared as two- or three-volume novels, when the format and even the content were dictated by the lending libraries that would buy up most of the copies of authors' first editions.)~Each volume also includes a frontispiece by H. Macbeth-Raeburn, as well as the ubiquitous Map of Wessex.~Also included with this set is a copy of the first edition of Hardy's first volume of verse, WESSEX POEMS; though published by Harper in 1898, it was put up in the same binding as the recently-published Wessex Novels. It is noteworthy not only because it is the first volume of the genre that would dominate his final decades -- verse -- but also because it includes 30 of Hardy's own illustrations, which clearly demonstrate his long-earlier training in architectural drafting.~Note: the volume WESSEX TALES bears on the front paste-down a "From the Author" leaf, which is signed (and dated 27 March 1897) by Hardy's Dorset friend Thomas Perkins, who had been headmaster of the Shaftesbury Grammar School and in the 1890s was rector of the North Dorset village of Turnworth (Turnworth House was "Hintock House" in Hardy's THE WOODLANDERS, and during these years Hardy would ride on his Rover Cob bicycle to that grand hall to give talks); an avid amateur photographer, Perkins was very interested in Dorset history, especially its architecture, and at the time of his death in 1907 he was writing MEMORIALS OF OLD DORSET.~As for condition, this is a remarkable set. A couple of volumes have subtle repair at the spine ends, and one volume lacks its front free endpaper, but all of the other volumes (including all four first editions) are just about FINE. It is worth pointing out that in this desirable condition, the value of just two of the first editions, JUDE THE OBSCURE and WESSEX POEMS, amounts to about half the value of all 19 volumes' price. The facility was opened in 1895 due to the increasing flow of visitors who came for the teachings and theraputic treatments of Sebastian Kneipp. Sebastian Kneipp 1821-1897, was a Dominican Priest and one of the founders of modern naturopathy, a system of medicine that harnesses the body's own healing powers to cure diseases. His Kneipp Kur (Kneipp cure) became very popular and many guests and patients came to Wörishofen to experience the cure, among which many prominent figures.       Boston, Roberts Brothers. 1895, 1895. First US Edition of the author's first book. 8vo. Near fine in publisher's blue grey cloth with some slight toning to the spine panel. Titled in gilt to spine and in black to front board with publisher's 'key' monogram in black to rear board. Internally bright and clean with Beardsley designed title page and front board decorations. A lovely copy of a scarce book. 'Matthew Phipps Shiel (his surname was originally spelled Shiell) (21 July 1865 – 17 February 1947), was a prolific British (or perhaps more accurately West Indian) writer of fantastic fiction. He is remembered mostly for supernatural and scientific romances. His work was published as novels, short stories and as serials. A recently discovered scandal (involving, allegedly, his twelve year old stepdaughter; a resounding victory for Victorian morality) perhaps explains why his literary output suddenly dwindled in 1914.'

        LILITH: A ROMANCE .

London: Chatto & Windus, 1895 - Octavo, pp. [i-vii] viii [1] 2-351 [352: blank] + 32-page publisher's catalogue dated "Oct. 1895" inserted at rear, title page printed in red and black, original black cloth, spine panel stamped in gold, top and fore- edges untrimmed, white endpapers with floral pattern printed in blue. First edition. MacDonald's second and last adult fantasy novel. "It has parallels with PHANTASTES (1858) and shows the slight influence of Carroll, but it is easily the strangest product of Victorian fantasy. It is the obvious parent of Lindsay's VOYAGE TO ARCTURUS (1920) and fascinated C. S. Lewis; as an allegory of heterodox Christianity it bears an interesting relation to the works of T. F. Powys." - Barron (ed), Fantasy Literature 2-115. "This powerful and sombre fantasy is now regarded by many as MacDonald's greatest work, having certain affinities with PHANTASTES (1858). The author himself felt it to be God-inspired, though his wife was much troubled by it. The first edition was received either unfavorably or in silence, the praise of another master of fantasy, H. G. Wells, being an honourable exception." - Shaberman. Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 1068. Bleiler (ed), Supernatural Fiction Writers: Fantasy and Horror, pp. 243-45. Cloth lightly worn at spine ends and corner tips, corner tips a bit soft, mild string mark to center fore-edge from bundling, a very good copy.         AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT (AM) FRAGMENT from THE LIFE AND VOYAGES OF CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS

n.d., n.p. - An excellent single page (5" x 7-1/2"), 23 lines with corrections, apparently removed from the 1895 Manuscript Edition of his collected works, here with the limitation page only from that set mentioning the page of manuscript. It is numbered "69" here but is actually page 45 of the finished book, the text from Chapter 7 titled "Columbus before the council at Salamanca," which describes Columbus's first appearance before the assembly of university professors and church dignitaries that were brought together to pass judgment on Columbus's proposition to sail westward to India. The council brought up many objections, primarily based on Scripture and incorrect scientific assumptions. For example, one objection was that even if Columbus were to reach India, the rotundity of the globe would present a kind of mountain that would make it impossible for Columbus to sail back up to return to Spain. One of the council members convinced by Columbus's reasoning was Diego de Deza. The manuscript here begins with a mention of him. In full: [Diego de Deza was] "an able and erudite man, above the narrow bigotry of bookish lore, and could appreciate the value of wisdom, even when uttered by unlearned lips. He seconded Columbus with all his powers and influence, and by their united efforts, they brought over several of the most intelligent men of the assembly. Still there was a preponderating mass of inert bigotry and learned pride in the erudite body, which refused to yield to the demonstrations of an obscure foreigner, without fortune or connexions, or any academic honours. After this celebrated examination of Columbus, the board held occasional conferences, but without coming to any decision; Fernando de Talavera, to whom the matter was especially entrusted, had too little esteem for it, and was too much occupied by the stir and bustle of public concerns, to press it to a conclusion; his departure with the court from Cordova, early in the." The remainder of that sentence, not present in this manuscript: "spring of 1487, put an end to the consultations, and left Columbus in a state of the most tantalizing suspense." Laid down on a slightly larger piece of paper. Fine and an important manuscript page from one of Irving's most celebrated works

Seventeen Trips Through Somaliland. A Record of Exploration & Big Game Shooting, 1885 to 1893.

Rowland Ward London first edition 1895 - Small quarto; xx,386p,[2]. 2 maps and all illustrations checked and present. In the original pale brown buckram covers which are now substantially browned, a common feature of the Rowland Ward buckram from this period. The spine is very browned indeed, not quite obscuring the leettering, and there is wear to the spine ends. Corners sl bumped. Internally the book is clean and very good indeed. The browning and sl wear to the cover of this book reduces it to a Good copy only, but all joints and hinges are sound. One of the truly great hunting books of the period, and hunting bibliographer Czech gives it a substantial write up as follows : "An excellent game shot, Swayne described his seventeen journeys into Somaliland's interior from 1884 to 1893. He hunted elephant near the Golis Range, Jallo, and the Sobt River in 1887. Five years later, while on reconnaissance near the Abyssinian border, he bagged rhinoceros near Toeli. In 1893, Swayne collected Leopard and oryx while journeying to Harar. Later near the Webbe Sheldeh River, he hunted rhino, lion, leopard and elephant. He also relates an interesting incident in hunting hyena with knife and pistol. In the Golis Range, he successfully stalked trophy kudu. On a second journey to the Webbe Shebleh, he bagged bushbuck, leopard and lion. An Important work of sport and exploration." czech, p161-2. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Chrysanthemum leucanthemum [Chrysanthemum]

Braunschweig: Friedrich Viewig & Sons, 1895. Colour-printed lithograph. Discreet ink stamp in the lower right corner of the plate. Good condition apart from some overall light soiling, mild rippling. A rare, vividly coloured plate from 'Anschauungstafeln fuer den Unterricht in der Pflanzenkunde', Friedrich Oskar Pilling's detailed series of botanical teaching posters. Botanical posters such as this were primarily used by German university instructors during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to teach courses in botany and phytopharmacy. They were also sometimes used in high school biology classes. Typically, they were hung on the walls of a classroom or lecture hall where the teacher could refer to them during the course of a lecture. The particular series from which this plate comes most likely illustrates the complete system of flowering plants as well as the most common and significant species of the major plant families. Although occasionally printed as a series and issued by a major publisher such as Viewig & Sons, these didactic posters were frequently individually hand-made and hand-painted. They are rarely used today, and can usually only be found in university archives, libraries, and botanical museums.

The Architectural History of Harrow Church Derived from a Study of the Building

Harrow, England: Wilbee, J. C. , 1895. Contemporary full morocco binding of a dark brown color, and with hubbed spine in six panels. Boards with gilt rules and small gilt decorative motifs, and with small diaper design in blind to the fields. Spine states, in fairly crisp, gilt-stamped letters, "Harrow Church, Gardner." Spine with elaborate and crisp gilt-stamped design. Generally unbumped spine head and tail and with slightly bumped lower corners, The leather binding is exceptionally clean and almost entirely free of scratches, and with minor rubbing along the gutters. The spine is lightly and evenly sunned to a medium brown color. The text block is firmly bound in. 9.25 x 6 inches. With handsome marbled paper pastedowns and FEPs. T.E.G. With xii and 95 numbered pages, including an introduction, the main text, a glossary of technical terms employed, and a postscript. With XL full-page B&W plates plus Plate XLI, a pristine pull-out architectural ground plan of the church, The Church of S. Mary Harrow on the Hill. Also with 15 additional B&W illustrations. We can find no foxing or other blemishes, save for an instance of off-setting. The book is astonishingly clean overall. Front pastedown with the stunning late 19th century armorial bookplate of Harrow School, including the motto "stet fortvna domvs." Near the top of the bookplate is written in a neat ink hand, "E. W. Swan, Term prize for Drawing, 1900' given May 31st, 1900." Hence a presentation copy. Off-setting between p. 72 and the opposite plate, likely due to insertion of a newspaper clipping or similar. Neatly pasted on to a blank rear FEP is a newspaper clipping, "Harrow Church 850 Years Old." Above the clipping in a neat ink hand is, "Times, Jan. 17th 1944." Neatly pasted on to the opposite blank rear FEP is a B&W photo of Harrow Church, doubtless from the same newspaper article. Finally, neatly pasted on to the rear pastedown is a very small -- and somewhat bizarre -- news magazine clipping, "A Railway Victim." The clipping pertains to an interesting gravestone in Harrow-on-the-Hill churchyard regarding a hapless man who was run over and killed by a railway train in 1833, shortly after rail was introduced to Harrow and vicinity. Else a very clean copy. A Very Good copy. Scarce in any condition. An altogether engaging and handsome volume and a pleasure to hold in hand.. First Edition. Full-Leather. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

'Madame Pompadour' - A Monkey Madame Pompadour being carried in a Sedan Chair by two uniformed monkeys (the windows of the sedan-chair with clear 'perspex' film)Meggendorfer created all of the pictorial elements of his books himself in pen and watercolor drawings. He then assembled the book in dummy form and had outline lithographs executed, which he hand-colored to serve as guides for the color printing. ?"Meggendorfer?'s reputation today is based almost solely on his ingenious mechanical picture-books for children. These he began to design during the late 1880s, and many of these books went into multiple German editions besides translations into English, French, Italian, Spanish, Bohemian, Hungarian, and Russian. Deservedly, he is considered the creator and chief innovator of moveable toy books, and his printed works are eagerly sought after by collectors of historical children?'s literature. He produced books with moveable figures, transformation pictures segmented into three parts and thus interchangeable, books with pop-up designs, rotating wheels as well as four-panel slat pictures which change the illustrations through movement, and simply funny picture books for children that would certainly make them laugh and generally contributed to some educational benefit?" (Justin G. Schiller?'s Introduction to The Publishing Archive of Lothar Meggendorfer. Original drawings, hand-colored lithographs and production files for his children?'s book illustrations. Offered for sale by Justin G. Schiller, Ltd. (New York, 1975)).?"There is little doubt that the most elaborate and ingenious movables ever produced were those of the German Lothar Meggendorfer (1847-1925) made during the 1880s and 1890s…the mechanisms and operations of Meggendorfer?'s books—not to mention the originality of his figures—are far superior to any others published before or since. The devices that operated the various figures in Meggendorfer?'s books consisted of a series of inter-connecting cardboard levers sandwiched between the coloured illustration on the front of the oblong leaf and the dummy pasted behind it. The animated limbs and heads were cut-out models on the front of the picture, and moving the tab set the whole scene in motion?" (Haining, Movable Books, pp. 65-73).

        MATHER'S HISTORICAL PHOTOGRAPHS. PART 1

Titusville, Pa, 1895. Original cloth, gilt, captioned MATHER'S HISTORICAL OIL REGION VIEWS OF WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA on the front cover. Minor wear at spine ends, hinges starting. Front free endpaper a bit chipped, with edges reinforced on verso. Very good. Edwin Laurentine Drake was the first American to drill for oil, at Oil Creek, Pennsylvania, near Titusville, in 1859. Mather quickly became fascinated by Drake and the oil business, moved to Titusville, opened a photography gallery, and compiled an exhaustive photographic history of the area's oil industry over the next forty years. Collected here are twelve photographs, the majority printed in 1895 from older negatives, and captioned in the negatives by Mather. A gift inscription on the front free endpaper is from the wife of "E. Mather," presumably a descendant of the photographer. An excellent record of Mather's photographic work in Pennsylvania. Mather's work is quite scarce. A second part was issued several years after this (the last complete set we are aware of sold for $18,000).

Gustave Flaubert (1821-1880) the influential French novelist, spent practically his whole life fitfully working on The Temptation of Saint Anthony (French La Tentation de Saint Antoine). He completed three versions, in 1849, 1856 (extracts published at the same time) and 1872 before publishing the final version in 1874. It takes as its subject the famous temptation faced by Saint Anthony the Great in the Egyptian desert, a theme often repeated in medieval and modern art. It is written in the form of a play script. It details one night in the life of Anthony the Great where Anthony is faced with great temptations, and it was inspired by the painting, which he saw at the Balbi Palace in Genoa. The major character in the book are: Saint Anthony: The protagonist. He is tempted by many characters and objects to stray from his belief that isolation is the truest form of worship.Ammonaria: One of his sister's friends, Anthony is drawn into a battle between his desire for her and his desire to remain holy before God in his isolation. He is distraught that he cannot control his body.King NebuchadnezzarThe Queen of Sheba: Tempts Anthony with riches, trying to evoke lust.Hilarion: Also known as Lucifer. Once Anthony's student, now he tries to tempt him away from his chosen lifestyle by creating doubt and eventually morphs into Science.Lust and Death: Lust appears as a young woman; Death, an old woman. They try to convince Anthony to give in to his desires and commit suicide.
