        La revue blanche bi-mensuelle.

Poster for the bi-monthly magazine 'La Revue Blanche'. Paris: Ancourt 1895. Published in "Les Maitres de l'Affiche", 1897. Plate no. 82.. Les Maîtres de l'Affiche (The Masters of the Poster) refers to 256 colour lithographic plates used to create a very significant art publication during the Belle Époque in Paris, France. The collection, reproduced from the original works of ninety-seven artists in a smaller format, was put together by Jules Chéret, the father of poster art.By the 1890's the streets of French cities were enlivened by large, colourful posters. The poster had not only caught the fancy of the public, but its best examples were already being regarded as true works of art (specifically, as fine prints) to be exhibited, reviewed in journals, collected and reproduced in a more manageable form. In the last five years of the 19th century, Imprimerie Chaix was to play a great part in codifying, hallowing and perpetuating the ebullient spirit of the Belle Epoque. The renowned set of 256 prints were created by Imprimerie Chaix, forever to be known as a set as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche. Each print was rendered as a separate sheet measuring 11 x 15 inches. [27.9 x 38.1 cm]. The set was compiled in a unique way: Every month for 60 months - from December 1895 through November 1900 - subscribers received a wrapper containing four consecutively numbered prints. On 16 occasions (each of the five Decembers, each of the Junes, and the March and September of the final three years) the monthly wrapper also contained a bonus plate, not a poster reproduction but a specially created lithograph. The compilation of this set of original prints makes up the complete suite known as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche

The Architectural History of Harrow Church Derived from a Study of the Building

Harrow, England: Wilbee, J. C. , 1895. Contemporary full morocco binding of a dark brown color, and with hubbed spine in six panels. Boards with gilt rules and small gilt decorative motifs, and with small diaper design in blind to the fields. Spine states, in fairly crisp, gilt-stamped letters, "Harrow Church, Gardner." Spine with elaborate and crisp gilt-stamped design. Generally unbumped spine head and tail and with slightly bumped lower corners, The leather binding is exceptionally clean and almost entirely free of scratches, and with minor rubbing along the gutters. The spine is lightly and evenly sunned to a medium brown color. The text block is firmly bound in. 9.25 x 6 inches. With handsome marbled paper pastedowns and FEPs. T.E.G. With xii and 95 numbered pages, including an introduction, the main text, a glossary of technical terms employed, and a postscript. With XL full-page B&W plates plus Plate XLI, a pristine pull-out architectural ground plan of the church, The Church of S. Mary Harrow on the Hill. Also with 15 additional B&W illustrations. We can find no foxing or other blemishes, save for an instance of off-setting. The book is astonishingly clean overall. Front pastedown with the stunning late 19th century armorial bookplate of Harrow School, including the motto "stet fortvna domvs." Near the top of the bookplate is written in a neat ink hand, "E. W. Swan, Term prize for Drawing, 1900' given May 31st, 1900." Hence a presentation copy. Off-setting between p. 72 and the opposite plate, likely due to insertion of a newspaper clipping or similar. Neatly pasted on to a blank rear FEP is a newspaper clipping, "Harrow Church 850 Years Old." Above the clipping in a neat ink hand is, "Times, Jan. 17th 1944." Neatly pasted on to the opposite blank rear FEP is a B&W photo of Harrow Church, doubtless from the same newspaper article. Finally, neatly pasted on to the rear pastedown is a very small -- and somewhat bizarre -- news magazine clipping, "A Railway Victim." The clipping pertains to an interesting gravestone in Harrow-on-the-Hill churchyard regarding a hapless man who was run over and killed by a railway train in 1833, shortly after rail was introduced to Harrow and vicinity. Else a very clean copy. A Very Good copy. Scarce in any condition. An altogether engaging and handsome volume and a pleasure to hold in hand.. First Edition. Full-Leather. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

The National Shakespeare, Comedies, Tragedies, Histories, in Three Volumes Being a Facsimile of the Text of the First Folio of 1623

London: William Mackenzie In the preface to this magnificent undated production (circa 1895) the publisher states that the scarcity of the original "First Folio" and the enormous price it has consequently attained in our times, exclude it from the shelves of most private libraries. That the text is scrupulously accurate to the original, including all those peculiarities of paging, spelling, and punctuation, printed in a special antique type, such as was employed in the "First Folio" upon hand made paper, with rough edges, specially manufactured to maintain the antique character of the edition. However they couldn't resist the temptation to add twenty specially executed illustrations by Sir Joseph Noel Paton (1821-1901) artist and folklore expert who painted in the Pre-Raphaelite style but declined to become a member of the brotherhood. Each volume was originally published at the price of three pounds, ten shillings. Supplied with documents for the last time they were sold in the trade in October 1934. Overseas shipping by quotation.. Morocco Textured Cloth. Very Good Plus. Illus. by Sir Joseph Noel Paton RSA. 415x270mm.

The Works of E.A. Poe (including Tales of Mystery and Imagination).

London: Published by J. Shiells and Co., 1895., 1895. 8 volumes; complete. A beautiful edition, illustrated with 24 fine photogravures, presented in a very decorative contemporary half dark red calf with two maroon title labels, gilt raised bands and gilt to spines, marbled boards and end papers; top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Includes the original printed notice about the care of leatherbound volumes. Light rubbing to the spine of a couple of volumes, first book with a couple of scuffs; minor foxing to page edges. Overall a most attractive set in a vintage leather binding. A seminal figure in the development of science fiction and the detective story, Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) exerted a great influence on Dostoyevsky, Conan Doyle, Verne, and Baudelaire. This collection of Poe's best stories contains all the terrifying and bewildering tales that characterize his work, as well as the Gothic horror of 'The Pit and the Pendulum' with other similarly wierd tales, together with all three of the landmark cases featuring his ground-breaking detective Auguste Dupin; the history of the detective story begins with the publication of 'The Murders In the Rue Morgue' (Matthews). He was a writer of genius who was interested in crime, especially violent death, in cryptograms, and the whole process of logical deduction (Quayle). Poe's mystery of 'The Purloined Letter' is a prototype of spy stories like those of James Bond. (Haining) Queen's Quorum (their first Cornerstone title), Eric Quayle; Detective Fiction. Peter Haining; Crime Fiction. Listed in 100 Books That Shaped World History [Raftery, 2002].

Bible in English, for the Blind, Printed in the New York Point Alphabet [Braille]

American Bible Society, New York 1895 - First edition of this Bible, volume I only; folio (14" x 13"), 164 leaves, embossed in the New York Point Alphabet for the Blind, which is a system of tactile raised dots, similar to Braille. Contemporary 3/4 calf over tan cloth covered boards, spine ruled in gilt; spine label is absent. New York Point for the Blind was invented by William Bell Wait (1839-1916), educator for the Blind, as an alternative to the "Line Letter" system, consisting of raised letters of the standard alphabet, which was in use in the late 19th Century and lasted for several decades. But Braille had been invented by Louis Braille in 1824, but fell into disuse, only to be revived in the early 20th Century and Braille remains today, the standard in reading and writing for the Blind, throughout the world. Internally, quite clean, with the embossed dots in very good condition; small loss at head of spine and corners worn through; a very good copy, now quite scarce on the market.         The Red Badge of Courage.

New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1895. First edition, first printing with page [235] advertising the three works of Gilbert Parker's Best Books, and the last page of advertisements (page 238) ending with The Land of the Sun, by Christian Reid; last gathering, including ads on laid paper. Octavo, original publisher's tan cloth. In near fine condition with a touch of rubbing. From the library of noted collector Donald G. Drapkin, with his bookplate, contemporary name on the endpaper. Housed in a custom half morocco box. An exceptional example. An abbreviated version of The Red Badge of Courage was first serialized in The Philadelphia Press in December 1894. This version of the story, which was culled to 18,000 words by an editor specifically for the serialization, was reprinted in newspapers across America, establishing Crane's fame. Crane biographer John Berryman wrote that the story was published in at least 200 small city dailies and approximately 550 weekly papers. In October 1895, a version, which was 5,000 words shorter than the original manuscript, was printed in book form by D. Appleton & Company. "Stephen Crane, with no more military experience than his lively imagination could cull from Battles and Leaders of the Civil War and from Tolstoy, told so graphically how a raw recruit feels in battle that The Red Badge of Courage must be regarded as the first artistic approach to the war. It pictures no historical figure or event, except that Chancellorsville is its setting, but its sense of the helplessness and meaninglessness of the common soldier, maneuvered by superiors and circumstance, is a brilliant achievement in impression... Its illusion of authentic experience has made it a minor classic of the war" (Leisy, 158-59).

CHOIX DE FABLES DE LA FONTAINE

1895 - [EHON - FAIRY TALES] BARBATOU, P. CHOIX DE FABLES DE LA FONTAINE. 2 volumes in 1. Tokio: MDCCCXCIV. Imprimerie de Tsoukidji-Tokio. (Printer: Kimura Tokutaro^; First Series, printed September 20th, published September 30th; Second Series, printed October 10th, published October 20th, Meiji 27 [1894]. Large format plain paper book, bound with the original covers into a contemporary Western style half leather binding. The first volume is 20 X 30 cm, with 14 double page color woodcuts by Kano Tomonobu, Kajita Hanko, Kawanabe Kyo^sui, and Okakura Sho^so^ called for. The "deuxieme serie" is similarly bound, 20 x 30 cm, with 14 prints by the four previously listed artists, along with Eda Sadashiko. This work, with its French text and literary origins, may be placed in the mainstream of an emerging international style in Japan. Yet it may be still be seen as squarely in the tradition of the Japanese illustrated book. It shares many of the characteristics of the revival of Japanese picture book printing in general at the end of the 19th century: an emerging Nihonga style which was an amalgam of theme and technique from East and West, skilled printing, increasingly restrained coloration, etc. An interesting document of East-West cultural and artistic accommodation, which gave rise to such hybrid vigor in world art. The bound-in covers and contents are perfect. However, the leather binding is worn and was rebacked at some point. The two volumes, complete, and bound as one.

        PRINCE ZALESKI

1895. London: John Lane / Boston: Roberts Bros., 1895. 8 pp undated ads plus 16 pp ads dated 1895. Original purple cloth decorated in cream. First Edition of M.P. Shiel's first book, issued as the seventh volume in John Lane's provocative "Keynotes Series," for which Aubrey Beardsley provided the cover / title page design as well as the key monogram. This is actually a collection of three supernatural mysteries...~Prince Zaleski, an exiled Russian nobleman, inhabits a half-ruined abbey in Wales, where he spends most of his time smoking cannabis and opium... His retirement from the world is occasionally interrupted by his friend Shiel, who comes to seek Zaleski's help in solving mysteries that have baffled the greatest minds in Britain. In "The Race of Orven," Zaleski must unravel a case involving a burglary, a murder, a floating phantasm, and three severed fingers. In "The Stone of the Edmundsbury Monks," the prince races against time to solve the mystery of a jewel from the Crusades that may cause a man's death. And in the final story of the collection, "The S.S.," an inexplicable wave of thousands of apparent suicides puts Zaleski to the ultimate test and leads to a deeply disturbing conclusion... Prince Zaleski incorporated two of the popular trends in 1890s literature: decadence and detective stories. Influenced by Poe, Huysmans, and Wilde, Shiel's decadent detective remains one of the most intriguing creation of fin-de-siècle British fiction. [Fox]~This is a very good copy -- the main problem being (as usual with this color of cloth) that the spine has sunned to a medium brown; there is also minor edge-wear and other soil. There are occasional pencil-markings in the text, and the front paste-down bears the ink-stamp of Thacker & Co. in Bombay -- both of which are referred to in an enclosed 1958 letter from one prior owner to the next. Queen's Quorum #19; Morse p. 33; Samuels Lasner (Beardsley) 31.
