      [ - 20 photographies Bordeaux, Alphonse Terperau, [circa 1895], , 20 photographies contrecollées sur feuillets forts, l’ensemble monté sur onglets, demi-percaline noire à coins, titre doré sur le plat supérieur, 20 photographies originales contrecollées sur carton : la première représente une gravure montrant une vue d'ensemble du château en 1889, puis 19 photographies nous laissent découvrir les façades, jardins et intérieurs (toujours vides) qui composent l'asile et la maison de santé (parc, jardin d'hiver, promenoir, salon, réfectoire, chambre, cuisine, salle réservée aux enfants arriérées, chapelle, pavillon hors-classe, etc.). «En 1885, après avoir perdu un procès contre la ville de Bordeaux, l'asile des aliénées doit quitter son emplacement du cours Saint-Jean. On achète dans le quartier Saint-Augustin, le domaine de Château-Picon. Le bâtiment est construit suivant le modèle des principaux asiles français et étrangers. Il comporte deux parties bien distinctes : l'asile des indigentes et le pensionnat [.]. En 1895 est créé un quartier pour les jeunes idiotes perfectives» (Nérin, Hôpitaux et hospices de Bordeaux à la Belle époque, 1994). Louis Anquetin, Étrépagny born in 1861 and died in Paris in 1932, is an important French painter. He began his career with avant - garde artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Henri de Toulouse - Lautrec. With Émile Bernard, he is the inventor of Cloisonnisme. From 1884 to 1893, Louis Anquetin continues to explore new opportunities introduced by the release of Impressionism in French painting. From 1893, after a long confrontation with the "old masters", he adopts a bias pictorial that will line the general art movement, and take away from his friends. Dazzled by the baroque art and its creative force, so he thinks his childhood friends were involved in a pathway leading to the death of painting.         1895 Wisden Almanack Rebound Like Hardbacks , Special.

      This is a very special 1895 Wisden Almanack, rebound by Wisden Almanack in the middle of the 20th Century to mimic an 1896 hardback, a quirky Wisden Almanack that will appeal to some. The similarities to a hardback are that the paste downs are yellow (with a Liverpool cricket club stamp) , the gilt on the covers and spine are identical to that of an 1896. It is slightly smaller by 1/8th inch , smoky top to page block and severe foxing around photo plate, the uniqueness is what will appeal. Hard to price up but Gorringes sold a similar copy (spine less like an 1896) for £750+20% and selling for less than we purchased it for.

      No place, 11. VIII. 1895. - 1 page, oblong 8vo, framed and glazed with a portrait of the composer (overall size: c.430:325 mm). Fine autograph musical quotation of the "Polacca" from act 3 of the opera "Christmas Eve", comprising the opening four bars notated in piano score in dark brown ink on four staves, inscribed ("Allegro non troppo alla polacca . Polski from 'The Night before Christmas'") to the young composer and critic Evgeny Ottovich Gunst. - Rimsky-Korsakov's "Christmas Eve" was premiered at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg on 10 November 1895. The plot centres on Vakula the Smith, who can only marry his beloved Oksana, she says, if he brings her the slippers of the tsaritsa (ie Catherine the Great). In Tableau 7 (Act 3), Vakula arrives at Catherine's court and finds a group of cossacks singing her praises in this "Polacca". Rimsky included this movement in his Orchestral Suite derived from the opera, as number 3. The eighteen-year-old dedicatee, Evgeny Gunst (1877-1950), later wrote a book about Rimsky-Korsakov and Wagner; his own musical legacy as a composer was only discovered in 2009. - Some browning, probably from the mount.

The collection, reproduced from the original works of ninety-seven artists in a smaller format, was put together by Jules Chéret, the father of poster art.By the 1890's the streets of French cities were enlivened by large, colourful posters. The poster had not only caught the fancy of the public, but its best examples were already being regarded as true works of art (specifically, as fine prints) to be exhibited, reviewed in journals, collected and reproduced in a more manageable form. In the last five years of the 19th century, Imprimerie Chaix was to play a great part in codifying, hallowing and perpetuating the ebullient spirit of the Belle Epoque. The renowned set of 256 prints were created by Imprimerie Chaix, forever to be known as a set as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche. Each print was rendered as a separate sheet measuring 11 x 15 inches. The set was compiled in a unique way: Every month for 60 months - from December 1895 through November 1900 - subscribers received a wrapper containing four consecutively numbered prints. On 16 occasions (each of the five Decembers, each of the Junes, and the March and September of the final three years) the monthly wrapper also contained a bonus plate, not a poster reproduction but a specially created lithograph. From the library of Arthur Hacker. The seminal history of Hong Kong covering the period 1841 - 1882. Although the author, E.J. Eitel was a controversial figure, he, for example left his position as Governor Pope-Hennessy's private secretary under a cloud, in this history he makes every effort to represent Hong Kong's history as fairly as he could, including the achievements of Pope-Hennessy's period as Governor. Eitel was judged harshly by many of his peers, no doubt his German background being a good part of the reason for this, together with his reported lack of personal warmth, however there is no denying he was a good scholar. In more recent years this history has criticised for its colonial viewpoint however it is important to remember that it was written when views of the world and in particular the part colonialism played where very different to today. This copy has a particularly interesting provenance as it was given as a gift to George Thomas Crook (1873 - ?) on his departure from Hong Kong in 1898. Crook was an English journalist who worked at the Daily Press in Hong Kong from January 1895 until his departure. Prior to his arrival in Hong Kong he had worked at the Birmingham Daily Mail (1886-94)and on return to England worked at the Daily Mirror and Daily Express. An attractive presentation plate is laid down on the upper pastedown signed by 12 "brother" journalists in April 1898. These journalists whose signatures appear hailed from a variety of newspapers include: T. Cowen [Thomas Clark Cowen], who worked in the Far East from 1893. He was on the staff of the Hong Kong Telegraph, reported on the Sino-Japanese and Spanish-American Wars and joined the Japan Times in 1906. G.C. Cox (Hong Kong Daily Press, staff 1893 - 1898); Jabez Potts on the staff of the Daily Press (Hong Kong) between 1898 - 1904?; Chesney Duncan, who had a distinguished career in East Asia working as a journalist on many of the best newspapers of the day, including the Hong Kong Telegraph, Japan Gazette, Shanghai Mercury, China Mail, Daily Mail (for whom he was special correspondent during the Boxer Rebellion), Times of Malaya and China Republican. A social activist he was took a leading role in the Sunday Labour Ordinance movement to abolish unnecessary labour on Sunday. The resulting legislation was used as a model when it was passed in other British Crown Colonies. He was also the awarded gold medal for his services during plague epidemic in Hong Kong, 1894. Colin McDonald Smart, China Mail (Hong Kong), staff at 1898. Thomas H. Reid joined the staff of the China Mail (Hong Kong) in 1892, he also served as The Times Hong Kong Correspondent for 3 years in the 1890s, reported on the Spanish American War leaving East Asia in the first years of the 20th century.         [Cendrillon]. Les Mandores. Autograph musical manuscript excerpt of a ballet divertissement from act 2 of the composer's opera Cendrillon. Piano reduction. With an autograph note signed in Massenet's hand on a separate leaf: "Quelques mesures manuscriptes du 2e acte de "Cendrillon" (1898) Paris 3 Nov. 1910."

      "Les Mandores" is part of an extended ballet divertissement in the second act of Massenet's opera Cendrillon. It is not included in Massenet's original manuscript piano-vocal score, dated 1895 (Bibliothèque nationale de France, département Bibliothèque-musée de l'opéra, RES-563); there, the "2-ème entrée" of the divertissement ("Le Fiancés") is immediately followed by "Le Rigodon du Roy," counted as "3-ème entrée." In the first edition "Les Mandores" appears as the "3-ème entrée" (pp. 172-75) and another new movement, "La Florentine," as the "4-ème entrée" (pp. 176-79); the "Rigodon du Roy" is renumbered as the "5-ème entrée" (starting at p. 180 ). The autograph manuscript at the Bibliothèque nationale is also notated on one side of the leaf only, is on the same paper as the present manuscript, and carries engraver's marks in the same hand. System breaks and page breaks match those of the first edition; pagination, however, does not. It appears that Heugel prepared, or at least planned, an earlier edition based solely on the manuscript in the Bibliothèque nationale, but as the premiere was delayed by several years, the publisher apparently put the project on hold. In the interim, Massenet added the new entrée (and made other changes as well), necessitating changes to the pagination of the printed score.. Folio (350 x 270 mm). Modern maroon morocco with marbled boards. 4 pp., notated in ink on 20-stave music paper with blindstamp of H. Lard-Esnault Ed. Bellamy sr, Paris on one side of the leaf only. A fair copy of a piano reduction of "Les Mandores" in A major, 3/4 time. Tempo: "Assez Modéré (sans lenteur)"; metronome mark: "120 = [quarter note]." Autograph note to upper left corner of p. 1: "3 ème entrée." Several erasures. Cautionary key and time signature for continuation after final double bar (D minor, 12/8 time). System breaks and pagination marked up in pencil in an unknown hand, both matching pp. 172-75 of the first edition of the piano-vocal score published in Paris by Heugel in 1899. The markup, as well as the cautionary key and time signatures at the end, allow for the conclusion that the present copy is part of the engraver's copy of the opera. All leaves guarded and with early horizontal crease; slightly browned; small stain to final blank page. In very good condition overall.

Kurt Meyer-Eberhardt, German (1895 - 1957)Kurt Meyer-Eberhardt is one of the most famous and revered 20th century dog artists. He was born in 1895 in Leipzig , Germany and died in Munich in 1977. He studied at the Weimar Academy of Fine Arts, where he became a student under the artists Theodor Hagen and Lionel Feininger. He rejected a professorship in Weimar and went to Munich in 1918, where he decided to work entirely on animal engravings.In 1926 he held his last exhibition in the "New Secession." He was a staunch individualist who rejected the offer of a professorship in Weimar because he valued his independence too much. The only thing he wanted was to continue depicting his beloved dogs, cats and other animals.His work has been published by the Hanfstaengl Publishing Company in Munich since 1917. His engravings are still published today at the printing shop in Munich - formally Franz Hanfstaengl, Munich . All etchings are still printed on 300lb hand made acid-free paper, printed by hand from the original copper plates, using the same directions as given by the artist himself.

      New York: Dodd, Mead & Co.. [1895]. First. Poster or broadside for the first American edition. Measuring 18.25" x 11.75". Archivally matted. Fine. The poster was designed by A.C. Morse. The English author Gissing was a brilliant student whose academic career was cut short when he was caught stealing from classmates while attempting to reform and support a young prostitute. He married the girl (the first of two miserable marriages) and began a life of constant drudgery and near poverty. The hardness of his life is reflected in the realism of his novels, which are also noted for their acute perception of the social position and psychology of women. .

Presents poignant poetry with a variety of themes and in several styles. The more ambitious poems, those written in standard English, are under the heading "Majors," and the more superficial works, in African American dialect, as "Minors."Dunbar was born in Dayton, Ohio in 1872 to parents who had been slaves in Kentucky. His first poetry was published at age 16 and he died in 1906, just 33 years old. In the preface to his "Book of American Poetry," friend & fellow author James Weldon Johnson, who was also executive secretary of the NAACP, writes:"Paul Laurence Dunbar stands out as the first poet from the Negro race in the United States to show a combined mastery over poetic material and poetic technique, to reveal innate literary distinction in what he wrote, and to maintain a high level of performance.
