        The Red Badge of Courage.

New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1895. First edition, first printing with page [235] advertising the three works of Gilbert Parker's Best Books, and the last page of advertisements (page 238) ending with The Land of the Sun, by Christian Reid; last gathering, including ads on laid paper. Octavo, original publisher's tan cloth. In near fine condition with a touch of rubbing. From the library of noted collector Donald G. Drapkin, with his bookplate, contemporary name on the endpaper. Housed in a custom half morocco box. An exceptional example. An abbreviated version of The Red Badge of Courage was first serialized in The Philadelphia Press in December 1894. This version of the story, which was culled to 18,000 words by an editor specifically for the serialization, was reprinted in newspapers across America, establishing Crane's fame. Crane biographer John Berryman wrote that the story was published in at least 200 small city dailies and approximately 550 weekly papers. In October 1895, a version, which was 5,000 words shorter than the original manuscript, was printed in book form by D. Appleton & Company. "Stephen Crane, with no more military experience than his lively imagination could cull from Battles and Leaders of the Civil War and from Tolstoy, told so graphically how a raw recruit feels in battle that The Red Badge of Courage must be regarded as the first artistic approach to the war. It pictures no historical figure or event, except that Chancellorsville is its setting, but its sense of the helplessness and meaninglessness of the common soldier, maneuvered by superiors and circumstance, is a brilliant achievement in impression... Its illusion of authentic experience has made it a minor classic of the war" (Leisy, 158-59).

Light soling, expected folds, else near fine condition.Lister writes in full: ""I am much obliged to you for your report of the puerperal septicemia. What a tremendously virulent affair the poison must have been to produce sloughing of the entire mucous membrane of uterus & vagina. It does seem a great pity that the serum was not used a day earlier. ""His correspondent, Dr. William Bulloch (1868-1941), a bacteriologist, pathologist and medical historian, became chairman of the governors of the Lister Institute in 1832.       1895 - [EHON - FAIRY TALES] BARBATOU, P. CHOIX DE FABLES DE LA FONTAINE. 2 volumes in 1. Tokio: MDCCCXCIV. Imprimerie de Tsoukidji-Tokio. (Printer: Kimura Tokutaro^; First Series, printed September 20th, published September 30th; Second Series, printed October 10th, published October 20th, Meiji 27 [1894]. Large format plain paper book, bound with the original covers into a contemporary Western style half leather binding. The first volume is 20 X 30 cm, with 14 double page color woodcuts by Kano Tomonobu, Kajita Hanko, Kawanabe Kyo^sui, and Okakura Sho^so^ called for. The "deuxieme serie" is similarly bound, 20 x 30 cm, with 14 prints by the four previously listed artists, along with Eda Sadashiko. This work, with its French text and literary origins, may be placed in the mainstream of an emerging international style in Japan. Yet it may be still be seen as squarely in the tradition of the Japanese illustrated book. It shares many of the characteristics of the revival of Japanese picture book printing in general at the end of the 19th century: an emerging Nihonga style which was an amalgam of theme and technique from East and West, skilled printing, increasingly restrained coloration, etc. An interesting document of East-West cultural and artistic accommodation, which gave rise to such hybrid vigor in world art. The bound-in covers and contents are perfect. However, the leather binding is worn and was rebacked at some point. The two volumes, complete, and bound as one.

1895. London: John Lane / Boston: Roberts Bros., 1895. 8 pp undated ads plus 16 pp ads dated 1895. Original purple cloth decorated in cream. First Edition of M.P. Shiel's first book, issued as the seventh volume in John Lane's provocative "Keynotes Series," for which Aubrey Beardsley provided the cover / title page design as well as the key monogram. This is actually a collection of three supernatural mysteries...~Prince Zaleski, an exiled Russian nobleman, inhabits a half-ruined abbey in Wales, where he spends most of his time smoking cannabis and opium... His retirement from the world is occasionally interrupted by his friend Shiel, who comes to seek Zaleski's help in solving mysteries that have baffled the greatest minds in Britain. In "The Race of Orven," Zaleski must unravel a case involving a burglary, a murder, a floating phantasm, and three severed fingers. In "The Stone of the Edmundsbury Monks," the prince races against time to solve the mystery of a jewel from the Crusades that may cause a man's death. And in the final story of the collection, "The S.S.," an inexplicable wave of thousands of apparent suicides puts Zaleski to the ultimate test and leads to a deeply disturbing conclusion... Prince Zaleski incorporated two of the popular trends in 1890s literature: decadence and detective stories. Influenced by Poe, Huysmans, and Wilde, Shiel's decadent detective remains one of the most intriguing creation of fin-de-siècle British fiction. [Fox]~This is a very good copy -- the main problem being (as usual with this color of cloth) that the spine has sunned to a medium brown; there is also minor edge-wear and other soil. There are occasional pencil-markings in the text, and the front paste-down bears the ink-stamp of Thacker & Co. in Bombay -- both of which are referred to in an enclosed 1958 letter from one prior owner to the next. Queen's Quorum #19; Morse p. 33; Samuels Lasner (Beardsley) 31.

1895. [with a relevant 1897 letter] A Story of an Eastern River. London: T. Fisher Unwin, 1895. Original dark olive green cloth. First Edition of Joseph Conrad's first book, an edition believed to have consisted of 1000-1250 copies. Conrad, after meeting the real "Olmeijer" in East Borneo in 1887, gradually produced the manuscript of this book over the six years 1889-1895. He submitted it to Unwin for consideration in their "Pseudonym Library", using the pseudonym "Kamudi" (Malayan for "rudder") -- enclosing the return postage, so sure was he of its rejection. However, Unwin's reader Edward Garnett saw the manuscript's promise and accepted it for non-pseudonymous publication.~This copy is in the first state (as are most copies), with the letters missing from the last two lines of page 110. Condition is nearly fine, with virtually no wear at all: there are some faint droplet-marks on the rear cover, and a little foxing on a few leaves. Cagle A1a.1.~THIS IS A REMARKABLE ASSOCIATION COPY, INCLUDING A RELEVANT 1897 LETTER. As indicated by his paste-down bookplate, his half-title signature, and his title page ink-stamp, this was the copy of L.C. Casartelli. Louis Charles Casartelli (1852-1925) was an academic in the field of Eastern religions, the author of numerous books in that field between 1882 and 1908, and a professor at the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium). In 1878 he had also become an ordained priest of the Catholic Church; in 1903 he was elevated to the post of 4th Diocesan Bishop of Salford (the Manchester-Liverpool area), a post he held until his death.~Tipped to the front endpaper is an autograph letter signed TO Casartelli from [Father Thomas] Jackson, who had been the first Prefect Apostolic of the Catholic Church in (British North) Borneo -- having been named to that post in the 1880s, after being Chaplain to the troops in Kandahar. With a return address of "St. Peter's School, Freshfield [Liverpool]", and dated May 30th 1897, Jackson's letter reads:~I return, with many thanks, the book you kindly lent to me [this copy!]. I have never heard of Joseph Conrad. Whoever he be, he certainly knows the ways of the people who live in Borneo. His descriptions are very life-like. His story is certainly founded on fact too. The Captain Lingard, whom he mentions so often, was a real personage. He has not even changed the name. About 1883 he was at Singapore, and, wishing to know what the North Borneo Co. was doing, he came in a Singapore ship to the west coast. On that occasion I joined the ship at Lahuan, on its way north, and spent three days with Lingard... I am yours sincerely [-----?] Jackson.

Cabinet Photograph of Rosario Fiducia, a Sicilian Immigrant Lynched in Louisiana

New Orleans: Robira Portraits. [circa 1895]. Cabinet photograph. Measuring 4.25" x 6.5". Slightly trimmed on one margin, faint ruled lines and some evidence of China white ink, apparently used to prepare a wood engraving or photographic reproduction for a newspaper account, notes in lower margin: "Rosario Fiducia generally known as 'Si Defichi' one of the lynched men, a cousin of the Defattas"; notes on rear, including "Si Defichi - one of the conspirators"; overall a very good, full length image. During the 1890s there were over 1500 lynchings in the South, mostly of blacks, but there were also six incidents of lynchings of Italian immigrants, three of those in Louisiana. As the result of one such incident in 1890, when a New Orleans mob murdered several Italians suspected in the death of a New Orleans Police Superintendent, the Italian government broke off relations with the U.S. and contemplated war. Apparently this is the only known image of Fiducia, a native of Cefalu, Sicily, one of the victims in the last fatal 19th Century anti-immigrant riot in Louisiana, when he was lynched in Madison Parish in 1899, along with the only other four Italian men living in that unincorporated village, all of whom were fruit or vegetable sellers. Fiducia had a small stall near the railroad tracks. According to contemporary newspaper reports, they were "a bad gang" and "they all had bad reputations of being bad and violent men... ." Apparently the lynching was precipitated when one of the Sicilians' goats interrupted the sleep of the local doctor, who shot the goat, precipitating a blood feud. Accompanied by a printout of a long article about the incident. A very interesting artifact of anti-Italian immigration violence in Louisiana. .

Late-19th and Early-20th Century Theatre Records and Scrap Books, Kept by a Young Woman in Brooklyn, New York

New York, November 1895 - February 1907. Hardcover. Very Good. Four volumes, containing the compiler's handwritten notes, as well as tipped-on theatre ephemera (programmes, portraits of the actors). VOLUME 1: Mottled black cloth over boards; 287x216mm; 30 blank cardstock leaves, full, recto and verso, with tipped-on programmes, alongside Luther's handwritten notes (usually the name of the theatre, the date, and who accompanied her). Boards detached, and numerous leaves loose; leaves brittle, and lightly chipped and torn along the edges. /// The remaining volumes are uniform in format (tho not binding material); boards, "Theatre Record" stamped in gilt on upper board; 229x180mm; 81 leaves, numbered on the recto only, with printed headings (programme, picture) and fields (play, theatre, date, accompanied by, seats, impressions of the play, criticism of the performance, criticism of individual actors), filled in by the compiler in a tidy, cursive hand, with tipped-on programmes and portraits of the actors. Nearly every heading has a piece of ephemera; nearly every field has an entry. /// (Condition, briefly.) VOLUME 2: Red morocco. Scuffed along joints and edges. VOLUME 3: Brown morocco. Backstrip perished; boards scuffed along the edges. VOLUME 4: Red cloth. Joints frayed; binding shaken and a few leaves loose. Clearly the work of a devoted fan of the theatre, a treasure trove of hundreds of programmes and images, enhanced by the observations of the compiler, Phoebe Andrews Luther of Carroll Street, in Brooklyn. Luther visits theatres all over the New York City area, including the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Montauk Theatre, Garrick Teahtre (Manhattan), Daly's Theatre (Manhattan), Empire Theatre, Knickerbocker, Lyceum, Broadway Theatre (41 St., Manhattan), Belasco Theatre, Metropolitan Opera House, and others. She sees and (observes) Wagner's "Lohengrin" (Mme. Nordica, Mme. Schumann-Heink and Mr. Bispham left nothing to be desired either as to their singing or as to their acting. Mr. Dippel has a beautiful voice but is nothing of an actor, though he looked Lohengrin to perfection); Shakespeare's "Midsummer Night's Dream" (Helen Burns as Bottom was irresistibly funny); "If I Were King" (One of the best plays I've seen); "Rip Van Winkle" (Joseph Jefferson was as fine as ever, though he does look very old now); and many, many others. Actors include John Drew, Ethel Barrymore, Maude Adams, Viola Allen, Richard Edeson, William Faversham, Francis Hodgson Burnett, Lawrance d'Orsay, Eleanor Robson, amongst others.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]
