Ladies of St. Paul's Guild, St. Paul's Episcopal Church (Waco, Tex.)
Waco: Brooks & Wallace Steam Print, 1888. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. Fair. 8vo. Frontispiece, 340 pp. Bound in contemporary green pebbled cloth (on front endleaf: "Bound by Mr. Naechter"). Textblock brittle and chipped at edges, p. 15/16 torn and defective, some pages stained, no doubt from actual use in the kitchen. A fair copy, priced accordingly. Rare collection of recipes, compiled by the Ladies of St. Paul's Guild, Waco, Texas, and issued for the elimination of $800 of the Church's debt. The list of contributors is extensive and consist of 5 pages; these individuals are almost all women, principally from Texas, but we see contributions from residents of California and New York; cf. the name of Henry Ward Beecher, the social reformer, who must have sent his contribution shortly before his death in 1887. Also included are many excellent home remedies. Pages 289-340 consist entirely of advertisements from purveyors of goods and services in Waco. The number of ads apparently vary; of the four surviving copies, the ads in the TAMU, Baylor, and Kansas State copies extend to p. 341, but the Texas Women's University has only 328 pages in total. This is the only copy currently on the market; it is not likely that another could be procured.

SARAH ?
Pomona California CA: (1888). 8 x 5 Inches. On offer is an original late 19th Century interesting, closely written, long, descriptive four [4] page manuscript letter dated (Pomona, California) Feb 24 (1888) from "Sarah," to her brother and sisters care of W. D. Yale, Houseville, Lewis County, New York, with printed religious tract envelope franked with US 2c green postage stamp, Pomona, Feb 25 postmark. Here are some snippets: "We now have 3 horses & sometimes 6 men & the Springs work goes on. He bought a big tan colored horse 'Fanny' ... a splendid work horse, but of course a poor match for the nervous, kicking little carriage horse he bought before. Fanny cost $200, Dolly $150 & old Maggie still goes with the buckboard around. Took 4 boys & I on a fine ride to celebrate the 22nd [George Washington's birthday], a legal holiday, went to Pomona Heights, s[outh] of town, lovely undulating hills, now clothed in a carpet of green. We tied the horse so she could eat & walked a mile or more to the very top of the highest hill, rested & found beautiful wild flowers, 6 kinds, so early. Returning we drove around a hill of trees brow of which they've made a nice, broad graded road! And such a lovely view of hill & vale & towns ... 400 people were there dotted in groups over the valley, playing ball, singing patriotic songs & just then returning homeward, crowding the street car, buggies etc. I've never rode after the team but once to the upper place. Our old place looks forlorn enough, all left in ruins, broken brick from the cellar scattered all around. They took all they could for … [Click Below for Full Description]

MAUD[E] MAY TELFER
BLENHEIM, CHATHAM, SOUTHWESTERN ONTARIO: (1888). Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. On offer are a superb pair [2] of original 1888 and 1889 manuscript diaries handwritten by Miss Maud[e] May Telfer a young woman born May 18th 1875 in Blenheim, Kent, in south-western Ontario. A very mature girl of 12 when the writings start January 2nd of 1888 it appears a much younger hand has inscribed the book as 'Private Maude's' on the title page. Thereafter Maud proves to be a dedicated diarist, rarely missing a day and describing all her daily doings from school, visits, travel and she does a yeoman job naming all her family, friends and visitors. Readers of Maud's diaries will find her to be rather exceptional. On the one hand she is like all girls of her age interested in playing at recess, consulting with her girlfriends, cheering on her baseball team. Just as easily she writes of Temperance and the politics of the Scott Act to her loan arrangement with her father repaying her $7.26 being the interest and capital repaid after a $6.00 one year loan she provided him. [Casual research into her family found that her father James Telfer was an inventor and we note Maud makes note of his, we believe, first invention late in 1889.] The 1888 book is an 8 x 6 inch and is over a hundred pages completely full. The 1889 book is a very large, 13 x 8 inch 'Daily Journal' diary again completely filled. Here are some snippets: 'I moved that we should get up a society and Flora seconded it so we voted Flora as President, Lizzie Secretary, Maude Vice President and myself Treasurer...Went up the station a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gaines, Edmund]
New Orleans and Washington, 1888. Eight pamphlets, in Good condition, with some spotting, loosening, and chipping. Several in original wrappers. Disbound, stitched or stapled. Two signed by counsel in the litigation. Myra Clark Gaines was the daughter of Daniel Clark, President Jefferson's American Consul at New Orleans. Clark there entered into questionable transactions with Burr and General Wilkinson; Clark later exposed Wilkinson's "treachery." DAB. Clark became fabulously wealthy: as a Louisiana land baron he owned the better half of downtown New Orleans and the French Quarter. Daughter Myra married Edmund Gaines, a famed military man who also made the arrest of Aaron Burr. Daniel Clark's death triggered a protracted contest over the disposition of Clark's estate. Claiming to be Clark's sole heir, Myra was opposed by the City of New Orleans-- which had taken possession of prime real estate purportedly owned by Clark-- and Myra's illegitimate half-sisters. Clark "had formed with Madame Zulime Des Granges an irregular connection, of which two daughters were born and which gave rise some twenty years after his death to a half-century of litigation over his estate." Id. These rare pamphlets provide a record of the final years of the case, including pleadings and memoranda of law in the various courts. Details of each pamphlet on request. II Harv. Law Cat. 1081 [reference]. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

FORREST, G. W.
Calcutta: Government of India Central Printing Office, 1888-95. Calcutta: Government of India Central Printing Office,, 1888-95. Folio (326 x 212 mm). Rebound in half calf, marbled boards, to style, original red morocco label "Bengal Papers". Interleaved throughout. Contents lightly browned, occasional marginal soiling, overall very good. A series of 34 papers containing transcriptions of key documents from the archives of the Bengal Government, drawn from the period of Forrest's employment on "special duty" carrying out investigations into the content and condition of India's archives with a view to the conservation of documentary material, the publication of key sources, and of the creation of a national repository, which was established in 1891 as the Imperial Record Office, now the National Archives of India. Evidently bound for Forrest's own use, interleaved throughout, but the interleaves unused. We have been unable to trace listings for any of these nonce papers, copies are certainly held in the India Office Collection at the BL, and no doubt the National Archive of India also. Contains much on Clive - including a substantial portion of his correspondence issued in just 50 copies - a life of whom Forrest was to publish in 1918 after over 30 years of accumulating material; "in The Life of Lord Clive Forrest allows his subject's letters to speak for themselves, with little authorial intervention". The collection comprises of, imprint GICPO and print-runs of 500 copies, except where noted. 1/ Bengal Public Consulations, 1747-48. 491 F[oreign] D[epartment]. 1891. 30 … [Click Below for Full Description]

METERIE-LARREY
Gorgeous / impressive large folio size antique print of the Orchid: Odontoglossum ramosissimum. Includes original 2 page sheet with descriptive text (English, French, German) Rare / scarse. Original colour lithographs printed from wooden blocks on a thick paper. The chromolithographs were produced by the use of as many as twenty inks and often finished by hand colouring. Description: This delicate plate originates from: 'Reichenbachia, Orchids Illustrated & Described.', by Frederick Sander, published in 1888-1894. This work is considered by many to be the pinnacle of all the orchid publications of the period. It was named after Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach (1824-1889) Reichenbach was a leading authority on orchids during 1865-1889. By modern standards this work was huge. Where the orchid was concerned, Sander never spared himself, but even so, the care lavished on Reichenbachia still provokes astonishment. Apart from the elegance of Moon's drawings, the technical standards would have been a tribute to any large printing house. The cost to Sander was enormous. References: (A. Swinson Frederick Sander: the Orchid King 1970).
