Lengthy autograph endorsement and a note signed ("L. P.") on a letter from Dr. G. Rauch. Lisbon, 8. IX. 1888.

1888. Small folio (267 x 210 mm). 3 pp. In the present letter, Dr. Rauch requests permission to visit Pasteur's laboratories to examine the discoveries made by one M. Gamaleia in hopes of making a contribution to his work and that of Pasteur. Rauch explains he has had extensive experience with diseases in warm countries, citing two cholera epidemics in Toulon and Algeria and proceeds to list his medical qualifications. He notes he would particularly like to participate in M. Gamaleia s experiments in the endemic field and feels confident that the Minister of the Navy will release him to do so, if accepted. At the foot of the third page of the letter, Pasteur replies in full from Arbois on 12 September 1888: "Honored Sir and Doctor, As soon as Monsieur Gamaleia has returned to Paris I will hasten to communicate your interesting letter to him. The latter is dated from Lisbon; are you returning on the Brest route, and when? Would you be able to come and see me on your way to Paris where I would perhaps have already returned? We could talk without too much inconvenience to you, about your wishes. Yours truly, L. P." (transl.). A further note in Pasteur's hand is found at the head of the first page of the letter: "To be shown to M. Gamaleia as soon as he arrives. L. P. 12 September 1888". - A fine letter demonstrating Pasteur s great willingness for collaboration between doctors and scientists.

Pedigree of the Family of Darwin

      H. Furnham Burke, London 1888 - Original, unrestored, cloth boards. Large (4to)thin volume -285mm x 220mm (11" x 9"), 23pp, original photograph of Darwin and 8 plates of coats of arms/bookplates. 1st and only Edition. [Freeman: A163]. A sound, unrestored copy of this very rare Darwin item. Some minor wear to extremities of the binding. Cloth lightly soiled only, with no serious marks. Gilt bright. Internally very good. Browing to title page and a light tide mark to the upper margin of the frontispiece. Otherwise excellent throughout. A presentable copy. One of only 60 printed. Sir Henry Farnham Burke, (1859 – 1930) was a long serving Irish officer of arms at the College of Arms in London. He was a son of Sir Bernard Burke (who was Ulster King of Arms from 1853 until his death in 1892) and grandson of John Burke (1787 - 1848) the original compiler of the Peerage and Baronetage, the compilation of which Bernard took over. Henry Burke was appointed Rouge Croix Pursuivant of Arms in Ordinary in 1880. In 1887, Burke was promoted to the office of Somerset Herald of Arms in Ordinary. On 26 October 1911, Burke was promoted to Norroy King of Arms to replace Sir William Henry Weldon. In 1913 he was given the additional appointment of Genealogist of the Order of the Bath. On 22 January 1919, he was promoted to the office of Garter Principal King of Arms on the death of Sir Alfred Scott-Gatty. He held this office until his own death in 1930. This book, the first and only ever full pedigree of Charles Darwin's family has never been reprinted and comes up for sale very rarely. A facsimile edition was printed by R.B. Freeman in 1984 and in his Preface he outlines the book's scarcity. "There is a copy in the British Library and another in the Bodleian Library at Oxford, but the Cambridge University Library, the greatest repository of Darwin Literature in the world, only holds it in photocopy. In America, the Library of Congress National Union Catalogue records only one copy, their own. No detailed seach of other British libraries has been made*, but no copy has ever appeared in Book Auction Records and I have never seen a copy offered for sale by a bookseller." COPAC currently shows the British Library copy and the Bodleian copy (Oxford), along with a copy now held at Cambridge (acquired since 1984?) and one further copy at the National Library of Wales (just 4 in total).         Meiji Kaisei Tokyo Zenzu. (Revised Meiji Map of Tokyo).

Koshodo. Tokyo. Meiji 21. 1888. - Copperplate engraved map with woodblock color, 20 x 28 1/2 inches on sheet 20 1/2 x 29 inches, folding to 6 3/4 x 3 1/2 inches. Several small repaired worm holes, a few without repairs, light wear, overall clean and bright. A particularly appealing Meiji Japanese map of Tokyo, apparently geared to the tourist trade as well as to the Japanese visitor, with names of the districts marked on the map and the legend in both kanji and English. There is an unusual inset (6 x 8 1/2 inches) of Yokohama at upper left. The map is surrounded by small vignette scenes. Most interestingly, contained within the yellow border between the images and the map is the description (in Japanese) for a 4 day walking tour of Tokyo. To the right of the compass rose is a schedule for trains leaving from Ueno and Maibashi. The inset at lower left corner shows the train schedule Tokyo - Yokohama, and the price for each stage of the journey. The inset at the lower right corner is a listing of municipal and rural districts. Beneath the map at lower right is the publisher Koshodo, followed by the characters for copper engraving (dosen). A wealth of detailed information! The Imperial Palace is misspelled as 'Emperil Palace.'

ROBERT ELSMERE. In Three Volumes (Fine Original Condition)

Smith, Elder, 1888. Ward, Mrs. Humphry. ROBERT ELSMERE. In Three Volumes. London: Smith, Elder, 1888. First Edition. A NEAR FINE set in original publisher's dark blue-green fine-diaper cloth, only the slightest wear to the extremities, simply superb for this title. ROBERT ELSMERE, now mostly familiar only to the Victorian Fiction specialist, was one of the single most important novels about religious faith and doubt published in the late Victorian era. It presented an uncanny and minute psychological analysis of its central character, creating a vision of Christianity based on social concern and not pure theology. Mary Augusta Ward (1851-1920) is sometimes chided by those with rear view mirrors for being part of an anti-suffrage movement in her later years but writers of the times such as Thomas Hardy recognized her subversive pro-woman subtext and she was much admired. Her charitable work was equally celebrated; she is not a writer to be forgotten. To quote John Carter in his landmark 1947 exhibition catalogue: "It is hard nowadays to realize how deeply Mrs. Ward's novel stirred the thoughtful public of the day." We've never seen a nicer copy of this important High Spot, one of the triumphant achievements of Victorian Women's Fiction and, in terms of faith questioned, one of the most important novels of the times.         Photograph album containing 28 mounted albumen prints of allegorical paintings executed by the artist for the Galerie des Métiers in the Paris Town Hall (1888-1891).

      - Photograph album containing 28 mounged albumen prints of allegorical paintings by the artist for the Galerie des Metiers in the Paris Town Hall (1888-1891). The prints executed by a commercial photographer of the period show 2 decorative portals (133 x 271mm), 18 paintings (182 x 271mm) representing the various arts and crafts, sciences, trade, industry, and agriculture (all are signed and dated 'P.V. Galland 1891'), and 8 emblematic female figures (260 x 280) symbolizing these subjects. The album in large oblong quarto consists of a total of 24 thick paper boards, edges gilt, 9 of which remain blank. Contemporary half morocco, rubbed. Period documentation of the paintings in the Galerie des Métiers, considered the most important official commission by this influential decorative artist. The album appears to have been prepared as a pattern book for craftsmen and decorators. The paintings for the Paris Town Hall are rated among the most important works by this influential decorative artist. Galland (1822-1892) was also noted for his contributions to the Paris Pantheon, the Palais de l'Elysée, the Vanderbilt mansion in New York, and the Narishkin Palace in St Petersburg. He was a prolific and versatile artist, who mostly however carried out private commissions. Galland taught at the Ecole des Beaux Arts from 1873; he became artistic director of the Gobelin factory in 1877. The magnificent tapestries which he designed for the Elysée Palace (1854-8), as well as his paintings at St Cloud, were destroyed by the Commune. See Henry Havard, 'L'Oeuvre de P.-V. Galland', Paris, 1895; also, Vachon, 'L'Hotel de Ville de Paris (1905), p.183ff. From the library of the eminent British stained glass revivalist firm Clayton Bell with their bookplate.         Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("P. Verlaine" und "P. V."). Paris, 9. IV. 1888.

1888. 2 2/3 SS. auf Doppelblatt. 8vo. Venez donc me voir. J'y suis tous les Mercredis n'importe quand. P.V.

Adam, and others, double-page lithographed map after and by J. Bartholomew on japan paper. 1 vols. Folio. A book of almost legendary beauty, rarity, and importance, recounting the author's adventures at Camp Harmony on the Restigouche River in New Brunswick, and drawing upon his long experience fishing the river. Dean Sage's contributions to angling literature are few in number but profoundly influential: "Ten Days' Sport on Salmon Rivers", published in the Atlantic in 1875, is a classic account. His library catalogue (2 vols., 1896, 1904) remains an important document in the history of angling bibliography and collecting. Sage's section on "The Atlantic Salmon," in Salmon and Trout (1902), is a synthesis of his own first hand knowledge as a fisherman and his assessment of the extensive literature. The Ristigouche and Its Salmon Fishing remains the work for which Sage is best known. One of the pinnacles of nineteenth century fishing book design and production, with the notable provenance of financier Jay Gould. Sage, who lived in Albany, would have known Gould from equestrian circles, as both men maintained stables of trotting horses and bred Morgan horses.         Autograph letter signed. Médan, 12. X. 1888.

1888. 8vo. 1½ pp. In French: "I have had nothing but trouble over this translating business, and I regret, as do you, that we have found ourselves together in such circumstances. I was wrong, after many miscarriages, to think it possible to do business in America. It's just one more lesson, that s all. You are not personally to blame for all this, and I beg you to accept my most sincere best wishes". - In general, American critics seemed to approach Zola with a great deal of uncertainty. The artistic quality of his work was obvious, and they could not disregard his importance as a leader of Naturalism; but they feared the forcefulness of his vocabulary and the morality of his observations. Because of this fear, American translators tended to abridge, omit passages from, and otherwise sanitize the more realistic or sensual novels, such as L'Assommoir, Germinal and La Terre. La Terre was published in France a few months before Zola wrote the present letter.

Single leaf from a Latin ms. Bible. [England, probably East Anglia, c. 1250-1275].

1888. 8vo (115 x 160 mm). Gothic book-hand (black ink) on vellum. 2 cols., 45 lines. Chapter numbers rubricated in red and blue. With three lombardic initials in red and blue, showing elaborate multi-line penwork in contrasting colours extending along margins. This visually appealing leaf from an English manuscript pocket Vulgate drawn up during the period of the Crusades contains nearly the entirety of chapters 17-20 of the Book of Revelation. It begins in the midst of verse 17:2 ("... sunt reges terrae et inebriati"), famously describing (in what is probably the best-known passage of the Apocalypse) Babylon the Great, "the great harlot who sits on many waters": "and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns ... And upon her forehead was a name written, Mystery, Babylon the Great, the Mother of Harlots and Abominations of the Earth" (KJV). The passage here preserved continues to describe the destruction of Babylon; the Marriage Supper of the Lamb; and finally, the Millennium: the beast and the false prophet are cast into the lake of fire; Satan is imprisoned in the bottomless pit for a thousand years, and the resurrected martyrs live and reign with Christ for a thousand years; "et qui non est inventus in libro vitae scriptus missus est in stagnum ignis" ("and whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire"). The bottom of the verso page preserves the rubrication for chapter 21, which would have followed on the next page. - From the collection of Otto F. Ege (1888-1951), Dean of the Cleveland Institute of Art, where he was instructor of Lettering, Layout, and Typography, and lecturer on the History of the Book at Case Western Reserve University. Over a period of decades, Ege systematically removed the pages of some 50 mostly incomplete illuminated medieval manuscripts, dividing them into 40 unique compilations for educational purposes. Known as the "Otto Ege Portfolios", they were sold worldwide. Ege defended his "book-tearing" thus: "Surely to allow a thousand people 'to have and to hold' an original manuscript leaf, and to get the thrill and understanding that comes only from actual and frequent contact with these art heritages, is justification enough for the scattering of fragments. Few, indeed, can hope to own a complete manuscript book; hundreds, however, may own a leaf" (Ege, I Am A Biblioclast [1938], p. 517). - Very slight rubbing in places, but altogether very clean and well legible throughout. Includes Certificate of Authenticity.

COLONEL QUARITCH, V C (Near Fine Copy in Three Volumes)

London: Longmans, Green, 1888. Haggard, H. Rider. COLONEL QUARITCH, V. C. A Tale of Country Life. In Three Volumes. London: Longmans. Green, 1888. First Edition. A NEAR FINE copy, in original publisher's bright scarlet cloth blocked in black. Despite some fading of the spine (a side effect hard to avoid with scarlet red Victorian cloth) and a few spots of discoloration to the cloth, this is essentially a fine, virtually unread set which sat on someone's shelf for 125 years or so; the owner (bookplate on front paste-down) apparently didn't get past Vol. 1 as the latter two volumes have very tight text blocks. The binding is unworn, the inner hinges are equally tight. Scattered foxing throughout but a very nice copy indeed. The only H. Rider Haggard three-volume novel which can be acquired at a modest cost. Murder plots, raging storms, blackmail & a treasure hunt: even though Haggard subtitled this novel "A Tale Of Country Life" he managed to turn rural England into a stewpot as sinister as his famous King Solomon's Mines. Sadleir 1084. . First Edition. Decorative Cloth. Near Fine.

Timayenis, a Greek academic, established Minerva Publishing House as the first Anti-Semitic publishing house in America. This was his first book at Minerva. Singerman writes, ?Presents a colorful account of Jewish exploitation, criminality, usury, lechery, vulgarity, an fraud in the immigrant ghetto of New York City. The Christian-hating Jews are depicted as parasites, competing with the Anglo-Saxons for control of America. ? Paper is browning. A few pages torn with no text effected. Overall good+ condition.       1888Pau, Vignancour, 1888.
