        History Of Greece; From The Earliest Period To The Close Of The Generation Contemporary With Alexander The Great

      London - John Murray, 1888 Book. VERY GOOD INDEED. Hardcover. A handsome full set of Grote's monumental History of Greece, bound by Baker & Son. This edition includes a portrait of Grote (the frontispiece to volume I), a map of Greece in volume II, and 12 plans of military maneouvres, battles, and the Africanterritory of Carthage. Grote studied languages and the Classics in his spare time, in the face of his father's contempt for academic learning. He began this work, his magnum opus, in 1822. He was a political radical, and close in his thought to John Stuart Mill and Jeremy Bentham, and alongside Millwas one of the contributors to the foundation of University College London. He later served three terms in parliament in the Liberal interest. The history was one of a series of works around that time to incorporate the conclusions of the great philological studies that had been undertaken by German scholars. as Grote says in his preface, the stock of facts and documents, comparatively scanty. . . has been combined, and illustrated in a thousand different ways. . . One of the great works that represented a new chapter in the European understanding of its classical past, and a significant contribution to the corpus of English classical scholarship. Collated: completeCondition: In a full calf prize Baker & Son binding. Externally very smart. Light fading to the spines and light rubbing to the extremities. Some wear to the front board of volume V. With the binder's stamp to the front endpapers. Internally, generally clean and bright, and firmly bound. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED.

        Memorial of the French and Dutch Loan Collection Edinburgh International Exhibition 1886 by William Ernest Henley

      David Douglas 1888 - A Limited Edition of 520 copies, of which the first 100 were large format with etchings on Japanese. This volume is numbered within the first 100 - No. 53.Bound in a heavy twill oatmeal cloth with gilt titling, the rubbing is clearly visible but without noteworthy damage save a little fraying at the points of the corners where the cloth has been folded around. The gilt titling and centrepiece have not escaped surface rubbing but remain clear, the top corner has a faintly visible "Japanese Proofs" in gilt as per the special edition. There is some bumping at the corners and over the open edge. As a general note, the exterior is only moderately worn for its age and carries only the wear you would expect from general handling.There are no structural issues with this behemoth, the hinges are rock solid and the pages are solid in the binding. The pages are a heavy grade paper and robust, they are unevenly bound and the outer edges have collected a deep tone. Inside, the pages have some hand [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        My Uncle Barbassou

      1888 - (GARBER, Daniel) UCHARD, Mario. My Uncle Barbassou. London: Vizetelly, 1888. Tall octavo, contemporary full brown crushed morocco gilt, raised bands, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, uncut. $4500.Second edition in English of this work about life and love in a harem, with 40 etchings by Paul Avril, extra-illustrated with 18 original pen-and-ink drawings in the margins by Daniel Garber. Handsomely bound by Adams.This wry and somewhat erotic novel tells the story of a young Frenchman who is willed his eccentric uncle's harem and finds himself literally seduced by the lifestyle it offers. The character of Uncle Barbassou was allegedly based rather loosely on Sir Richard Burton. Édouard-Henri Avril (aka Paul Avril), among the best known French illustrators of erotic literature of his day (the so-called "galante literature"), produced a series of lovely head- and tail-pieces for this edition. This particular copy also contains 18 large original drawings by Daniel Garber"" 12 of them signed and one dated "˜04." Executed with a fine-nibbed pen, they appear in the margins and often extend well over the text itself. In addition to his skill as a painter, Garber was also an accomplished etcher, producing scores of delicate prints. From 1899 until 1905 he studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, where he took night classes, in order to pursue his daytime work as an illustrator, commercial artist, and portrait painter. This extra-illustrated book is apparently one of those commercial projects. The first edition of Uchard's Barbassou was published in French in 1876 and the first English translation appeared in 1887. An additional letterpress title page, mentioning the Garber drawings, is laid into this copy. A fine copy, with signed original drawings, handsomely bound.         A New English Dictionary on Historical Principles;

      Oxford: Clarendon Press,, 1888?1933. Founded mainly on the materials collected by The Philological Society. 11 volumes bound in 13, large quarto (325 x 255 mm). Contemporary brown half morocco, dark red cloth sides, raised bands, titles and ruling to compartments gilt, marbled edges and endpapers. Extremities faintly rubbed, the occasional minor bump to corners, light cockling to front board of Volume 2, Volume 10 (Part I & 2) with different marbling to endpapers and edges, Supplement with different marbling to endpapers. An excellent set with exceptionally bright contents. First edition in book form. "The N.E.D., as it was originally cited, or the O.E.D., as it is now known, is the greatest treasure-house of any language in the world, unrivalled for its comprehensiveness and ease of consultation as well as for its reliability and scholarship" (PMM 371). "The scheme of 'a completely new English Dictionary' was conceived in 1858? Herbert Coleridge and after him Dr. F. J. Furnivall, were the first editors. Their work, which covered 20 years, consisted mainly in the collection of materials, and it was not until Dr. J. A. H. Murray took the matter up in 1878 that the preparation of the Dictionary began to take active form?. The essential feature of the Dictionary is its historical method, by which the meaning and form of the words are traced from their earliest appearance on the basis of an immense number of quotations, collected by more than 800 voluntary workers. The Dictionary contains a record of 414,825 words, whose history is illustrated by 1,827,306 quotations" (Drabble, 728). The Dictionary was originally issued in fascicles which were then gathered into book form. After Murray's death the editing was entrusted to his colleagues Henry Bradley, W. A. Craigie, and C. T. Onions. The one-volume supplement, edited by W. A. Craigie and C. T. Onions, was published in 1933.

        The Condition of the Working Class in England in 1844. With Appendix Written 1886, and Preface 1887... Translated by Florence Kelley Wischnewetzky

      London: William Reeves, 1888. First British edition of the first English translation. 8vo. (iv), vi, (3)-199, ix, ii, (1) pp. Publisher's brown cloth, gilt lettered to the spine, ex-libris the Midlands Workers' Library of Birmingham with their loan label to the second free endpaper (listing a single loan in March 1945) and the faint remains of a white numbered shelfmark to the spine, the library's highly distinctive and attractive pictorial bookplate to the front pastedown featuring illustrations of workers set amid Communist iconography. A few blemishes to the contents, occasional old pencilled underlining and marginalia, sometime neatly recased with new endpapers, some light wear to the edges of the binding, but generally a decent copy now housed in bespoke brown cloth case. This British edition was almost certainly issued to tie in with the publication of the latest English translation of Engels and Marx's "Manifesto of the Communist Party", also published by Reeves in London in 1888. It was published using the sheets of the first US edition which appeared in New York the previous year; the first edition printed in the UK didn't appear for another four years. Whilst the first New York edition is uncommon, this London edition is particularly scarce with scant few auction records and not many institutional holdings: Copac lists two in the UK, at the British Library and Oxford, with Worldcat listing three more, two in the US and one in the Netherlands.

"Little Phil" Sheridan (1831-1888) was described by Grant as having "no superior as a general, either living or dead, and perhaps not an equal". He is perhaps best remembered for his ruthless campaign in the Shenandoah Valley in 1865 and the brief Appomattox Campaign that forced the surrender of General Lee. "In 1884 he succeeded General Sherman as commander-in-chief of the army. On June 1, 1888, Congress bestowed upon him the highest military rank, that of general. The last months of his life were occupied by the writing of his Personal Memoirs, the preface being signed only three days before his death at Nonquitt, Mass., where he had gone with his family in the hope of restoring his failing health" (DAB). This was published by Mark Twain's publishing company and issued in a very similar binding to that of the Personal Memoirs of U. S. Grant (1885-86).

      In 16 oblungo, carte 57. Legatura coeva in mezza tela. FRA

      1888. A Tale of the Two Roses. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1888. 8 pp undated ads. Original printed yellow wrappers. First Edition, published about six weeks before the London edition. Unlike the English one, the American edition is illustrated; it was also issued, at a higher price, in red cloth (no precedence). Stevenson wrote this entire novel in the Spring of 1883, for serial appearance in "Young Folks" (where TREASURE ISLAND had then just appeared). He wrote not only rapidly but also carelessly: proofreaders had to alert him to inconsistencies in his plot and characters. Stevenson derided the work as "tushery"; neither he nor his British publisher considered it worth publishing in book form. However, in 1887 the American publisher McClure sought it out for American serialization, which in turn prompted Scribner's to publish it, and then Cassell in London.~This is a good-to-very good copy, which for these fragile wrappers is quite collectible condition (some edge-wear, mainly at the foot of the spine and at a rear fore-corner). In our experience the American edition is scarcer than the English one, even on this side of the Atlantic -- especially in the yellow wrapper binding. Beinecke 480; Princeton 40 (copy 3).

        The Journal of Indian Art, Vol. 2, Nos. 17-24

      London: W. Griggs, 1888. Hardbound. Contents are VG or better, Front cover is stained, defective and warped, but could be restored by a skilled binder, minor wrinkling to first few sheets at top only. There is light off-setting from each colored plate onto the facing page (usually a blank page, so no text is marred). The volume is ex-library from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, with a stamp on the title page, a sticker on the back free end paper, and the remnant of a pocket inside the back cover. In addition, each color plate is library-stamped on the reverse. A personal bookplate of William Sturgis Bigelow, Boston surgeon and collector of Asian (especially Japanese) art. He donated his entire collection of 25,000 works of art to the MFA. The front hinge, although sturdy, is beginning to separate. There is a 4-inch vertical tear to one page, close to the hinge. No plates have tissue guards, but there is a loose tissue guard with bw illustration laid in at a random place (VG condition; could be framed). The contents are bound consecutively but without original covers, as various "chapters" of a book. The original paper covers are bound together, in order, at the back of the volume.. Green gilt embossed publisher's cloth. Unpaginated, and filled with over 100 breathtaking colored chromolithographs and other two-tone plates and images. The book contains 45 single color plates, almost all with multiple (2 or 3) images on each plate. There also are 3 double-page plates, so the total number of color IMAGES is about 130. The majority of the illustrations are bw or sepia duotone. A bit heavy at 6 pounds and will require extra postage. Scholarly literature on the decorative arts in India is scanty and mainly in learned journals. The Journal of Indian Art and Industries (1886-1916) is the most important and contains numerous pioneering studies. Original front and rear wraps from each issue are bound in at the rear. These covers have the contents of each issue printed on them. This is the exceedingly rare second volume of this seminal and Influential periodical on Indian arts. See article by Peter H. Hoffenberg entitled "John Lockwood Kipling, W. H. Griggs and The Journal of Indian Art and Industry" written in 2003 for a complete description of this periodical. He states: "...Kipling's and Buck's vision encouraged use of the latest photographic and reproductive innovations to ensure accurate and attractive illustrations of lasting quality. Griggs and his editorial staff took advantage of that encouragement and of the most current technology to produce exquisite color chromo- and photo-lithographs bound in leather. Black and white illustrations were also included...No doubt the publisher applied chromo-lithographic technologies from Britain and the continent, but the pages of the Journal also included illustrations resulting from innovative work in the heliogravure and collotype sections of India's own Revenue and Agriculture Department, particularly the offices devoted to the Survey of India. " The first 4 or 5 volumes of this publication seem exceedingly scarce.
