      London: Smith, Elder, & Co, 1888. First Complete Edition. ONE OF 250 COPIES ON HAND-MADE PAPER. 235 x 159 mm (9 1/4 x 6 1/4"). 17 volumes. EXCELLENT CONTEMPORARY PURPLE MOROCCO (stamped "The Knickerbocker Press" on rear turn-in), front covers with flourish or gilt monogram (perhaps "G") at center, wide raised bands, spine panels with gilt titling, very broad turn-ins with simple gilt ruling, violet watered silk pastedowns and free endleaves, morocco hinges, edges untrimmed and all but three volumes UNOPENED. With frontispiece in five volumes. A Large Paper Copy. Wise, p. 235. Spines uniformly faded to a pleasing chestnut brown, shadow of a silk place marker on two pages, otherwise AN EXTREMELY FINE SET, with almost no wear to the bindings, and the text nearly pristine. This is a copy of the first collection to be called a complete edition of the works in verse of Robert Browning (1812-89), one of the major British poets of the 19th century. Though he was overshadowed in his day by Tennyson and his wife Elizabeth Barrett Browning, our author has experienced a much more lasting influence stylistically than either. As Day says, "Intellectuals have consistently praised Browning . . . for his psychological portraits and his poetic style. Browning could write mellifluous verse like Tennyson's and Swinburne's, but he much preferred either a conversational quality catching the idiom and cadence of actual speech or a cerebral diction challenging the brain power of his readers." In this respect, "Browning is the great exemplar of a revolutionary new poetic diction for his age, as Spenser, Dryden, and Wordsworth had been in earlier periods of English poetry." The text here is printed on excellent textured paper, surrounded by immense margins. Although the decoration of this set is very reserved, the bindings are nevertheless carefully executed using high quality materials, and it is clear from the unopened state of the volumes that they have received very little use.

      1888. Paperback. HERTZ, H[einrich]. UBER STRAHLEN ELEKTRISCHER KRAFT. (Berlin: Gedruckt in der Reichsdruckerei, 1888.) Offprint from Sitzungsberichte der Koniglich Preussischen Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin, 1888, No. 50, pp. 1297 - 1307. The text of a lecture on electric waves delivered 13 December 1888, it relates qualitative experiments undertaken by Hertz, at the Karlsruhe Polytechnic, on the analogy between electric and light waves. Passing electric waves through huge prisms of hard pitch, he showed that they refract exactly as light waves do. He polarized electric waves by directing them through a grating of parallel wires, and he diffracted them by interrupting them with a screen with a hole in it. He reflected them from the walls of the room, obtaining interference between the original and the reflected waves. He focused them with huge concave mirrors, casting electric shadows with conducting obstacles. This is the first print appearance, preceding its appearance in Annalen der Physik (36, p. 769) because, at this point in his career, Hertz was sending his papers to Hermann von Helmholtz to communicate to the Berlin Academy for quick publication before sending them to Annalen der Physik. It was later collected with Hertz's other experimental and theoretical works on electricity in Untersuchungen uber die Ausbreitung der elektrischen Kraft (Leipzig, 1892), which expanded and clarified the electromagnetic theory of light that had been put forth by the British Physicist James Maxwell in 1884. Hertz's experiments with electromagnetic waves led to the development of the wireless telegraph and the radio. (D.S.B.) 11 pp. Octavo, orange paper wrappers, with title information printed to front. Ink ownership stamp of physicist and noted socialist Leo Arons ("Dr. LEO ARONS | Strassburg i. E."), whose scientific work was primarily focused on the empirical research of electrical phenomena that governed Maxwell's theory. Pamphlet is creased vertically. Covers are nicked along edges and show general light dust-soiling. Front cover is detached and has a couple of light pencil markings. Hertz offprints are rare.

        A Personal Narrative of the Euphrates Expedition.

      London: Kegan Paul Trench & Co. 1888.. In two volumes. Vol 1. vii+492 pp. Vol II. xiv+447 pp. folding map, dark blue green boards with title in red. Minor wear to top and bottom of spine, corners a bit bumped,some foxing to end-papers. Internally very clean and sound. Vol II is partly uncut. This expedition was led by Colonel, later to become General Chesney, in 1834-1838 and set out to explore the practicality of using steamboats from the upper Euphrates to the Gulf as a route to British India. They transported a boat in pieces, using bullocks, 841 camels and 160 mules, and assembled it at Port William south of Bir Birijik in Syria. Ainsworth concluded, after sailing it, that low water levels made it impractical, but a direct line of railway would be successful. The paddle steamer named Tigris eventually sank in a storm. Much material of interest on Syria, Kurdistan, Mesopotamia and Persia as well as Asia Minor. An important nineteenth century expedition.

Antoine Henri had been interested in the absorption of light by crystals since 1886 and showed the importance of crystal symmetry in the absorption spectra of polarized light. He noticed that tetravalent uranium compounds were not phosphorescent, whereas uranyl salts exhibited a bright luminescence under the same conditions of excitation. Interestingly enough this was the second experiment performed by a Becquerel on uranium. Like his father, Antoine Henri was fascinated by the phenomenon of phosphorescence, and at the time nobody suspected the secret hidden in the mysterious element. Original parchment backed, gray paper covered boards with gilt ruling and leaf design, lettering in dark gray on cover, spine with large gilt lettering. Number 4 of only 50 Copies Printed, signed by De Vinne (publisher) on limitation page. Presentation Copy from author: "To Anna C. Bird/ from her friend,/ W. R. Huntington/ Sept 20/ 1888" WIth lengthy autograph letter from the author Anna Bird, the presentee, a cheery three page letter dated Sept. 20, 1888 (attached to rear endsheet). William Reed Huntington was a prominent 19th Century clergyman and well-respected poet whose work appeared in Stedman's American Anthology. A bright copy with few faults, the fragile parchment backing with almost no wear except for very slight wear to top and bottom of spine. The gilt lettering on spine is still quite bright.Most scarce and a significant example of De Vinne's craft. nb "quinqaginta" means "fifty.

Lang [Andrew Lang the fairy and folk tale authority who compiled the famous series of coloured fairy books]. Front inner hinge cracked, else a very good copy of this the rare first edition of this famous miniature. See Bondy, page 98, who mentions only the second edition of 1895; also Bromer and Edison page 46 who likewise only mention the second edition; Speilmann 117 who also only cites the edition; Welsh 2304 for the first edition. The first edition would appear to be very rare, no copy appearing at auction in 32 years, however, there are four records of the later 1895 printing.

London, The Hogarth Press, 1975 1980.This set is a keystone of any Virginia Woolf collection. The two original signed letters with this copy from the editor Nigel Nicolson (who was Vita Sackville-West's son) includes one to the scholar McLaurin in which he enquires about the date of a Virginia Woolf letter that is quoted by McLaurin in his Critical Heritage volume on Woolf - McLaurin's corrected draft is also present. The second Nicolson letter acknowledges McLaurin's reply and accepts his suggestions for further research.

        Australian Photo Album, with 47 Views of Victoria, New South Wales, Tasmania, ca 1880 to 1894

      Wonderful photograph album of Victoria, New South Wales, and Tasmania, with large photographs and manuscript titles. A total of 47 photos, with 33 of Victoria, 6 of New South Wales, 5 of Tasmania, 1 of New Zealand, and 2 others. Each photograph is lightly tipped on to the album paper, with blank verso. Most of the photographs are by an unknown photographer; there are also some signed by J.W. Beattie, Thomas Foster Chuck, Frank Arnold Coxhead, C. Rudd, and J.P., possibly John Paine. One of the most striking & largest photograph is of "Aboriginals of Lake Tyers". It is an outdoor view of a family group of aborigines, from children to grand parents, dressed in western clothing, with spear, boomerangs and lean-to behind them. Others include some rather poetic views of woodcutters at Black Spur & Fernshaw; a couple of gold mining at Bendigo including Garden Gully United Gold Mining Company, with houses in fore and background. There is a series of some very striking studies of Melbourne buildings including the Empire Building, Collins St. West; Prell's Building, corner of Queen St. and Flinders Lane; Austral Chambers, Queen St., with Austral Chambers sign and "Offices to Let", by Selby & Co., 97 Queen St.; Grand Hotel, Spring St., with carriages at the front; Federal Coffee Palace, Collins St., #102, showing electrical workers, 3 of whom have climbed electrical poles; "Tuck's Buildings" (or Luck's?), Elizabeth & Flinders St, with the caption "Rent of Shop L 22.10 per week"; Government Public Offices (Melbourne), #48, with a dirt road in the foreground; Melbourne Hospital with a train moving past in the foreground; Centennial Exhibition Procession, August 1st, 1888, with Victorian Confectioner's Society banner in front; St. Kilda Jetty, busy with people fishing; another showing neighboring jetty, Hegerty's Railway Baths for Gentlemen, and fishermen with the town behind them; The New Prince's Bridge, with scattered construction debris; The Melbourne Hotel, #10, with the #220 Carlton and Abbotsford tram in the foreground; Collins St. from Elizabeth St., looking east, #73, with a busy street scene and a George & George flag flying; Modern Permanent Building Society offices, with Kilpatrick & Co. The NSW photographs are taken in and around Sydney, mostly signed "J.P.", possibly John Paine, 1834 - 1915, including Manly Cove; Harbour from Neutral Bay, with a building under construction in the foreground, and harbour and ships in the distance; Harbour from McMahon's Hill, with flags, ferries, row boats and sailing ships; Farm Cove, with ships and Government House in the distance; Coogee (?), with a hut in the foreground; trams in a turning circle, a beach and vacant land in the distance and an unidentified grand public building, with a horse and carriage visible. The Tasmanian photographs are unsigned. "Port Arthur, Tasmania" is a small panoramic view with the Penitentiary, ruins of Church and Model Prison, noted in the margins. Hobart from the lower slopes of Mt. Wellington, overlooking the harbour (River Derwent); a beautifully artistic photograph "Glimpse of Port Arthur, shewing side entrance to Peninsula & ruined church in distance" is framed by trees and bushes, the buildings visible in the distance. The photographs vary in size - the largest is 29 x 23 cm; the smallest 9.5 x 15 cm; most are approximately 20 x 15 cm. Most are bright and unfaded, while some have some fading. The album is bound in red cloth with title in blue, and gold gilt and black decoration at front cover. A little loose in binding, with the last few pages blank. Overall, a very interesting album in very good condition. Full details of each photo and size available on request.
