Base-Ball: How to Become a Player; With the Origin, History, and Expansion of the Game

Athletic Publishing Philadelphia: Athletic Publishing. 1888. First. First edition, wrappered issue. 149pp. Bound in black cloth covers with wrappers bound in. A couple of old professional paper repairs, slight wear, a near fine copy. Ward was one of the great pitchers; when he injured his arm, he became a star shortstop for the New York Giants. Unlike most players of his day, he was a college graduate, earning a law degree from Columbia while playing. He was the first President of the Brotherhood of Professional Base Ball Players, the first players' union, and in 1890 helped to form the Players' League, which folded after one season. The Hall of Famer retired at 34 as player-manager of the world champion Giants. One of the first truly important books on baseball as a game. .

True First Edition, First Issue, double ruled above & below the spine title. Lampman's First Book. Extraordinary copy. Inscribed by Chartles G. D. Roberts on the front free endpaper: "Some of these poems / were originally published by / me when I was editor of / The Week. Covers near fine, the book block needs sewing. Custom protective clamshell case. An important debut from an important Canadian poet. Perhaps the best possible copy. "Long hours ago, while yet the morn was blithe, / Nor sharp a thirst had drunk the beaded dew, / A reaper came, and swung his cradled scythe / Around this stump, and, shearing slowly, drew / Far round among the clover, ripe for hay, / A circle clean and grey; / And here among the scented swathes that gleam, / Mixed with dead daisies, it is sweet to lie / And watch the grass and the few-clouded sky, Nor think but only dream." - Among the Timothy by Lampman. Archibald Lampman, FRSC [17 November 1861 – 10 February 1899] He is widely regarded as Canada's finest 19th century English language poet. Lampman's poetry concerns Canada's rural life and the wonders of nature and can be compared to British romantic and nature poetry contemporary to his life. Lampman's ability to write detailed, meaningful poems that depict traditional Canadian and Native American life was one of his greatest triumphs as a poet, and probably one of the reasons why his work has had lasting impact in the Canadian canon. Lampman associated with Charles G. D. Roberts, Susanna Moodie, Catherine Parr Traill, Duncan Campbell Scott, & William Wilfred Campbell. He was one of the Confederation Poets and was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1895. Sir Charles George Douglas Roberts, KCMG , FRSC , BA [January 10, 1860 - November 26, 1943]. Canadian poet, prose writer, lecturer, professor of Literature & economics. First recipient of the Lorne Pierce medal. He was knighted in 1935. Previously, he had been awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree from the University of New Brunswick. Besides his own body of work, Roberts is known as the "Father of Canadian Poetry" because he served as an inspiration for other writers of his time. Roberts, his cousin Bliss Carman, Archibald Lampman and Duncan Campbell Scott were known as the "Confederation poets".. Signed by Author. 1st Edition.

Television: Seeing by Wireless.London: W. S. Caines for Sir Isaac Pitman & Sons, 1926.

First Edition of the first book in English on television. Dinsdale discusses the technical challenges faced by early experimenters (Jan van Szczepanik, Boris Rosing, Denoys von Kihaly and others), but focuses primarily on the work of the Scottish engineer John Logie Baird (1888-1946), the first person to produce televised pictures of objects in motion. In February 1924 Baird produced the first television image in outline, and in April 1925 he transmitted the first pictures between two televisions. By the following October Baird had succeeded in transmitting images with gradations of light and shade, and on January 27, 1926, he successfully transmitted recognizable human faces between two rooms by television. Of Baird's early experiments, Dinsdale writes: "Baird's weird apparatus-old bicycle sprockets, biscuit tins, cardboard discs and bullseye lenses, all tied together with sealing wax and string-failed to impress those who were accustomed to the shining brass and exquisite mechanism of the instrument maker. The importance of the demonstration was, however, realized by the scientific world . . ." (p. 49). Although he did not succeed in producing a viable system of television, Baird paved the way for future technical developments. Television reached a state of technical feasibility in 1931, and the first high-definition broadcasting system was launched in London in 1936 by the BBC. The plates include a view of the very first television picture.<br/><br/> The Richard Green copy, with a tape repair on the back panel of the dust-jacket and some minor rubbing, sold at Christies' on June 17, 2008 for $16,250.00. <br/><br/> Shiers, Early Television: A Bibliographic Guide to 1940, p. 841.. 8vo (184 x 125 mm), pp 62, including portrait of Baird and 11 further full-page plates, original printed paper boards, pictorial dust-jacket (upper capital with a small professional repair, hardly visible), custom cloth clamsell box, a fine copy

Paris: Libraire de Firmin-didot Cie, 1888. FIRST EDITION, first printing. Six volume set complete. The title page gives a mere hint of the opulence of the plates in this work.       London: Smith, Elder, & Co, 1888. First Complete Edition. ONE OF 250 COPIES ON HAND-MADE PAPER. 235 x 159 mm (9 1/4 x 6 1/4"). 17 volumes. EXCELLENT CONTEMPORARY PURPLE MOROCCO (stamped "The Knickerbocker Press" on rear turn-in), front covers with flourish or gilt monogram (perhaps "G") at center, wide raised bands, spine panels with gilt titling, very broad turn-ins with simple gilt ruling, violet watered silk pastedowns and free endleaves, morocco hinges, edges untrimmed and all but three volumes UNOPENED. With frontispiece in five volumes. A Large Paper Copy. Wise, p. 235. Spines uniformly faded to a pleasing chestnut brown, shadow of a silk place marker on two pages, otherwise AN EXTREMELY FINE SET, with almost no wear to the bindings, and the text nearly pristine. This is a copy of the first collection to be called a complete edition of the works in verse of Robert Browning (1812-89), one of the major British poets of the 19th century. Though he was overshadowed in his day by Tennyson and his wife Elizabeth Barrett Browning, our author has experienced a much more lasting influence stylistically than either. As Day says, "Intellectuals have consistently praised Browning . . . for his psychological portraits and his poetic style. Browning could write mellifluous verse like Tennyson's and Swinburne's, but he much preferred either a conversational quality catching the idiom and cadence of actual speech or a cerebral diction challenging the brain power of his readers." In this respect, "Browning is the great exemplar of a revolutionary new poetic diction for his age, as Spenser, Dryden, and Wordsworth had been in earlier periods of English poetry." The text here is printed on excellent textured paper, surrounded by immense margins. Although the decoration of this set is very reserved, the bindings are nevertheless carefully executed using high quality materials, and it is clear from the unopened state of the volumes that they have received very little use.

1888. Paperback. HERTZ, H[einrich]. UBER STRAHLEN ELEKTRISCHER KRAFT. (Berlin: Gedruckt in der Reichsdruckerei, 1888.) Offprint from Sitzungsberichte der Koniglich Preussischen Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin, 1888, No. 50, pp. 1297 - 1307. The text of a lecture on electric waves delivered 13 December 1888, it relates qualitative experiments undertaken by Hertz, at the Karlsruhe Polytechnic, on the analogy between electric and light waves. Passing electric waves through huge prisms of hard pitch, he showed that they refract exactly as light waves do. He polarized electric waves by directing them through a grating of parallel wires, and he diffracted them by interrupting them with a screen with a hole in it. He reflected them from the walls of the room, obtaining interference between the original and the reflected waves. He focused them with huge concave mirrors, casting electric shadows with conducting obstacles. This is the first print appearance, preceding its appearance in Annalen der Physik (36, p. 769) because, at this point in his career, Hertz was sending his papers to Hermann von Helmholtz to communicate to the Berlin Academy for quick publication before sending them to Annalen der Physik. It was later collected with Hertz&#39;s other experimental and theoretical works on electricity in Untersuchungen uber die Ausbreitung der elektrischen Kraft (Leipzig, 1892), which expanded and clarified the electromagnetic theory of light that had been put forth by the British Physicist James Maxwell in 1884. Hertz&#39;s experiments with electromagnetic waves led to the development of the wireless telegraph and the radio. (D.S.B.) 11 pp. Octavo, orange paper wrappers, with title information printed to front. Ink ownership stamp of physicist and noted socialist Leo Arons ("Dr. LEO ARONS | Strassburg i. E."), whose scientific work was primarily focused on the empirical research of electrical phenomena that governed Maxwell&#39;s theory. Pamphlet is creased vertically. Covers are nicked along edges and show general light dust-soiling. Front cover is detached and has a couple of light pencil markings. Hertz offprints are rare.

A Personal Narrative of the Euphrates Expedition.

London: Kegan Paul Trench & Co. 1888.. In two volumes. Vol 1. vii+492 pp. Vol II. xiv+447 pp. folding map, dark blue green boards with title in red. Minor wear to top and bottom of spine, corners a bit bumped, some foxing to end-papers. Internally very clean and sound. Vol II is partly uncut. This expedition was led by Colonel, later to become General Chesney, in 1834-1838 and set out to explore the practicality of using steamboats from the upper Euphrates to the Gulf as a route to British India. They transported a boat in pieces, using bullocks, 841 camels and 160 mules, and assembled it at Port William south of Bir Birijik in Syria. Ainsworth concluded, after sailing it, that low water levels made it impractical, but a direct line of railway would be successful. The paddle steamer named Tigris eventually sank in a storm. Much material of interest on Syria, Kurdistan, Mesopotamia and Persia as well as Asia Minor. An important nineteenth century expedition.

Recherches sur l'absorption de la lumiere. Thèses presentees a la faculté des sciences de Paris pour obtenir le grade de docteur ès sciences physiques.Paris: Gauthier-Villars, 1888. First edition.

Presentation copy of his doctoral thesis on the absorption of light in crystals, inscribed by Becquerel to his demonstrator Peignot. Norman 156 [Norman copy with anonymous inscription].<br/><br/> "On March 15, 1888 he submitted his thesis 'Recherches sur l'absorption de la lumière' (Research on the absorption of light). Antoine Henri had been interested in the absorption of light by crystals since 1886 and showed the importance of crystal symmetry in the absorption spectra of polarized light. He noticed that tetravalent uranium compounds were not phosphorescent, whereas uranyl salts exhibited a bright luminescence under the same conditions of excitation. Interestingly enough this was the second experiment performed by a Becquerel on uranium. Like his father, Antoine Henri was fascinated by the phenomenon of phosphorescence, and at the time nobody suspected the secret hidden in the mysterious element. This strange coincidence might be regarded as a premonitory sign of destiny or as the first step towards a major discovery." (Adloff: 100 Years after the Discovery of Radiochemistry, p.5).. Large 4to (265 x 210 mm), contemporary dark green half morocco over marlbled boards with gilt spine lettering, hinges with light wear, title page with large inscription in Becquerel's hand, pp [1] 2-111 [5] and 4 photogravure plates, drawn by Becquerel and prepared by Dujardin.
